Hello!! Wait as I review the article!

Wikipedia:Make technical articles understandable edit

  • Earthquakes in the western and central area mostly display thrust mechanism caused by NNW–SSE compression., I get that it says that the earthquake thrust is produced by something, but I don't know what NNW-SSE compression is (it's a direction of plates that presses against one another?). Are you able to word that part to be a bit more untechnical?   Done
  • Two fault plane solutions were obtained; either left-lateral oblique-reverse faulting on an E–W striking plane or reverse faulting on a NE–SW plane., I get it says that scientists deduced that the wall of a footwall has gone up-left, though the part with E-W striking plane and NE-SW plane are the parts I don't get, is it referring to the directions of the plane?   Done
  • an E–W striking reverse fault that reactivated in the Quaternary as a right-lateral fault (...), a tinsy problem, can we at least reword this as a right-lateraly reverse fault or if that's incorrect, we do not include that part with Quaternary and the part with right-lateral fault? I feel it's telling us the history of that plate and how it was previously when it's unrelated to the earthquake, unless I'm misunderstanding it completely.   Done

Verifiable edit

  • [1], This citation is sending me to the introduction site of the catalogue, so I went to the "Mw from bibliography" and it doesn't say of any earthquake event that happened on 1994-08-18.   Done
  • [2], it sends me to the introduction page of NOAA, I don't know where to go from here to confirm the earthquake (I also tried to Download Data from there but I don't have the appropriate file format for it).   Done
  • 5.8Mw, considering [1] doesn't confirm the magnitude. [3][6] says it's 5.7M.   Done
  • Between 10,000 and 12,500 people [6], though [7][9][10] says it's actually between 8.000-10.000.   Done
  • The usually clear hot springs at Bou Hanifia, and additional 416 ruined at 10 percent in other villages across Mascara Province. I can't seem to find these info in the newspaper[6], maybe it's in the part that isn't shown?   Done

Illustrated edit

  • Are there any images of the damages? Or the footage was kinda limited?   Done

@Dora the Axe-plorer: in rest everything is pretty great! And yeah, if you don't have any images that captures the event, it's fine. Editoneer (talk) 09:26, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'll attend the technical writing issues in a while. The rest below I can respond faster.
  • You'll have to request and download the catalog (Download and legal in side menu). The data is an excel sheet and there's a lot to go through. That's a bit much work so I'll take you to the Technical tab in the USGS event page, listed under Origin, the catalog ISCGEM states 5.8 mw.
  • Select "Significant Earthquake Information" will take you to the page. The doi is supplied because the source requested it cited in a specified manner.
  • I stuck to [6] (Benouar et al. 1994) since that was published in three months after the earthquake; the extent of casualties is probably clearer. The other sources were published immediately after the event.
  • That's in Benouar et al. 1994, page 635, my attempt at rewording "usually limpid" ; I went through the source and reworded the damage, I misunderstood it previously
  • I couldn't find any media in English and Arabic searches
Thank you for highlighting these errors and clarifying. Dora the Axe-plorer (explore) 10:29, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I've added compression "direction", I hope that clears the confusion.
The line left-lateral oblique-reverse faulting on an E–W striking plane means the hanging wall goes up-left along a plane oriented E–W. reverse faulting on a NE–SW striking plane means the hanging wall goes up along plane oriented NE–SW. There's not a lot I can do with this but I've linked strike and dip for readers to refer. Perhaps I shall link plane as well. Dora the Axe-plorer (explore) 10:45, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm assuming the hanging wall is going in a certain cardinal direction? If yes, what's NNW–SSE direction North North West - South South East? Editoneer (talk) 11:03, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
NNW–SSE is north-northwest–south-southeast, its the direction of compression in the large scale tectonics of the region; generally coming in from the north-northwest and south-southeast. Dora the Axe-plorer (explore) 11:26, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
"right-lateraly reverse" wouldn't be accurate as the fault was neither of these at the same time. It means during that period, that fault had a right-lateral slip sense but is now displaying left-lateral and reverse slip. The fault now is defined as reverse slipping and doesn't exhibit the previous behavior. The history of this fault reflects on the complex tectonics that's mentioned in the first section. Since it's a possible source of the shock, the information is relevant. Dora the Axe-plorer (explore) 11:35, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ohh okay, got it. However, for the last problem, the newspaper's last part is cutoff which presumably it's where these muddy springs and additional 416 deaths are coming from, as it's not mentioned beforehand within the newspaper. Editoneer (talk) 11:38, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
The report is available here, enter the DOI into the searchbar Dora the Axe-plorer (explore) 11:47, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Also regarding the claim with radical Islam (Due to the presence of radical Islam threats on foreigners, Western aid organizations contemplated sending assistance), sending assistance means like sending military aid to not risk getting assaulted by extremists? Editoneer (talk) 12:17, 24 November 2022 (UTC)   DoneReply
The source did not elaborate on this statement, I can only make personal assumptions for myself Dora the Axe-plorer (explore) 12:31, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Well that was a pretty fast review, good luck futher monsieur Axe-plorer and chat some type on Wikipedia:Discord if you'd like. Editoneer (talk) 13:49, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • A google image search for "Mascara disaster" turned up noting on the earthquake but some shocking photos of a different kind of disaster. Cbl62 (talk) 20:31, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I did a search in Arabic and found two videos on YouTube and Facebook—probably the only existing media showing the effects of the Mascara disaster. Dora the Axe-plorer (explore) 08:19, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
