Sthreedhanam (English: Dowry) is an Indian Malayalam language television soap opera drama. It premiered on Asianet and was streamed on Hotstar from July 2, 2012, to May 14, 2016. Chithra Shenoy, Divya Padmini, and Rajiv Roshan played pivotal roles. Loosely adapted from the 1993 film Sthreedhanam by C. V. Nirmala, the series delves into the challenges posed by dowry within a middle-class Malayali family.[1]

It was remade in Tamil as Ponnukku Thanga Manasu on Star Vijay. It was also remade in Telugu as Kante Koothurne Kanali on Star Maa. Sthreedhanam is one of the longest-running television soap operas in Malayalam language.[2][3]

Plot

edit

The story revolves around the Palat family, specifically the life of Prashanthan, the eldest son of Sethulakshmi and Lakshmanan Pillai. Sethulakshmi, a domineering and materialistic woman, forces Prashanthan to marry Divya from the Meledath family, primarily interested in Divya's wealth.

Divya and her family are subjected to immense pressure from Sethulakshmi. Meanwhile, Prashanthan's cousin, Mayuri, harboring ambitions to marry Prashanthan, manipulates situations to create discord between the couple.

A series of misunderstandings and conflicts arise when Sethulakshmi discovers that Divya's jewelry is fake. However, the truth is revealed as a planned arrangement between Prashanthan and Divya's father, Govindhan. To appease Sethulakshmi, Govindhan borrows money to buy the desired ornaments.

The story progresses with the introduction of Veni, Prakashan's love interest, who is accepted by Sethulakshmi due to her wealthy background. However, Veni too faces restrictions imposed by the domineering mother-in-law.

The narrative primarily focuses on the complexities of family relationships, materialism, and the manipulative nature of certain characters within the Palat household.
