permissions pending - yes please restore the image for me!

Thank you for being the only helpful wikipedia editor Ive ever encountered in my life! Youve been a great help. Yes please if you can restore the image so I can put the code in for the pending permissions that would be fabulous! I did send it to the correct address but on 2 of my photos i never heard back, im not sure why. It seems some of the emails get lost... I am having the photographers themselves email directly now - all the signed release forms I send get ignored except for the alien - deadly returns photo. That one was accepted, the others ignored.

Request for help with AfD problem

It's been a while since I've bugged you with a newbie problem, so I hope that you'll let me abuse your kindness again—

I've just started going through the AfD process with ESS Drum & Bugle Corps, which I strongly suspect of being a high-school prank or the like. Everything went swimmingly until I reached the step where I edited Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2012 January 4. The subclusion process seems to have done everything it should, and my suggestion appears to be in the same format as everyone else's in the edit window; but the article's title, history-link, etc., don't show up.

I experimented by moving my proposal below the top one in the list, but that didn't help at all. The only thing I can think of is that the ampersand in the title interacts strangely with the template. However, I see that an ampersand isn't on the list of forbidden characters in article titles.

Any thoughts? Guidance would be appreciated; if nothing else, could you suggest an appropriate venue at which to ask this question? Thanks (and thanks again for all the questions you've answered in the past). --Ammodramus (talk) 16:49, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Strayboots looks like it might have verifiable notability from the Times story (which badly wants formatting). EDEX Careers looks like it got its may-not-meet-notability-guidelines template this month; would it be appropriate to propose it for deletion before giving the editor a chance to respond? I'm thinking about StealTheDeal, which looks promotional and which only cites a couple of press releases from the company itself. A Google search doesn't turn up any evidence that they've been covered by reputable media. Beside, they use "everyday" as an adverb; thus their deletion will make the world a slightly better place. To boot, when I notified the editor who'd created the article that it'd was up at AfD, I found that it'd been deleted before and that the editor had apparently re-created it. Bio box colors - can you help me with a quick change?

Thanks! I just found a wiki article. I guess the TYPE of musician indicated changes the colors automatically. Solo singer is yellow, band is blue, etc. Thanks!!! You've been most helpful. Ohio House in Philly

Ohio House

I thought you might be interested in this. It's one of two buildings left in Fairmount Park (the original site) from the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. A contributing site to the huge NRHP Fairmount Park site. Apparently 23 companies from Ohio gave the stone for this - see e.g. "Dayton Stone" near the top of the gable. I must have another dozen on pix, but by themselves the names aren't all that interesting as pix. Any idea of what to do with this? Smallbones (talk) 01:26, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Well, it's only if you are interested. It was the Ohio State Pavillion at the 1876 "World's Fair". There are stone company's names engraved, e.g. from Cincinnati. Album images

Hi, I just noticed the file deletion related to this and this. I was trying to help, in response to this Bad GIF tag. The image enforcement practices here are pretty baffling even for experienced general editors; I would have appreciated a talk page notification.

I've just found guidance on album cover image size at Template:Infobox Album#Cover. Is there a policy page that explains the general requirements, please? I would like to add a link to it into the {{Bad GIF}} template. – Fayenatic (talk) 18:55, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

My general rule is that nonfree images that belong on just one article, such as album covers, should not be any larger than the size at which it's displayed in the article. In this situation, the larger image was problematic simply because it was larger — filetype wasn't an issue at all. I've never seen anything that would be more relevant than the criteria; if all you need is beyond that page, you're in the same boat as I. Nyttend (talk) 19:24, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Please excuse the disturbance. I was just thinking about your comment in the discussion here about the added citations lacking "multiple crucial components needed to identify their sources", and I was wondering if perhaps you read the diff backwards. It seems that some of the citations that were removed from the article were a little vague (such as Bushman, 323, 347-48; and Palmer, 180-81, 193-94, 197-99.) while the citations that were added had lots of the information needed to identify the sources. Semi-colons

Clauses are clauses. They are not stand-alone sentences. If a sentence repeats the subject and verb after the semi-colon, then you can be absolutely certain that there is a more concise and expressive way of conveying the information. In the cases that I corrected the two sentences that had been strung together with the semi-colon had additional phrases or clauses attached. This makes the total horse-and-cart sentence extremely clumsy, indictaing that it should be split in two.

So there are two options:

• If your subject remains the same, and your verb is the same, or is at least a similar, find an appropriate verbal link.

Matthew Boulton was a patron of James Watt and commissioned a steam engine from him in the 1770s; he installed it in the Soho factory where it remained for a hundred years.

• Use the present participle:

There are correct ways to use semi-colons. They are not simply stand-ins for a full-stop and a capital letter.

• The material in the sentence is different but perfectly balanced. There may be another way of saying it, but the balance makes a point.

He likes tea; I like coffee.

• The material of the second half impacts strongly upon the information contained in the first.

The general planned the attack for dawn; the rebel troops attacked at midnight.

• The material is balanced but conflicting.

Tradition has it that the white calf is a fairy apparition; science suggests that it is the product of marsh gas.

If either sentence is long then you can be absolutely certain that the use of a semi-colon is not appropriate.

I came across this file. Yakutat is a borough, not a city-borough, despite its name of "City and Borough of Yakutat" and despite what has been inserted into article after article to the effect that it is a city-borough. Skagway is also a borough. The image is small enough to where I couldn't exactly tell whether or not you labeled it as a city-borough.  Done Now every sentance in the prose is backed up by a inline citation, just like in the article you showed me. But regarding "most notable former players" on Fyllingen, the source only says that Pedersen and Huseklepp are the only former Fyllingen-players to have played for the national team, not that they are the most notable ones, but I couldn't find a good way to formulate that sentance so I left it as it was. The sentance is rewritten. But those three "terms" are actually the ones I struggled most with translating. (1) Indicative vote - the members could vote on the website of the clubs, but it wasn't the result of the vote that would decide the name, that was the board's job; after looking on the result from the vote they could still choose the least wanted name, since the vote only was an indication. (2) I guess engagement could be replaced by controversy. (3) I thought borough was a part of a city, but maybe neighborhood is a better word? I don't really understand the difference between those two words. But according to the article of both Fyllingsdalen and Bergen, Fyllingsdalen is a borough of Bergen, so I'll add that to the article. I simply don't know. It was simply trying something: since all the rights that a block removes are restored when the block expires, I figured that if I removed all abilities from him for one second, he should have all his abilities back in two seconds. Just think of it like a G6 speedy deletion, perhaps? It seems like a "housekeeping" block to me. Nyttend (talk) 02:38, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

The problem is autoblocks work differently: they are implemented by the software whenever a blocked user tries to edit. Autoblocks are always for 24 hours and do not automatically expire when a normal block ends. As such I see no reason why a 1 second block would help in any way. Hi. Sorry to bug you again, but re...Cranberry Creek Archeological District. I started this because it sounded interesting and it look like there are lots of sources on it. Well, it is mentioned a lot but the problem is, it's generally in a unreliable source and only mentioned. THere are more mounds than just the NRHP site, little directly discusses the NRHP. Slew of articles on books by Benedict Allen

Hallo Nyttend, I saw you'd undone my CSD's of a pile of new articles on books by Benedict Allen. You are certainly right that LadyNico is new, and it was very kind and gracious of you to give her the benefit of the doubt. However, I suspect she is connected either to Allen or to his publisher with promotional intent, and not only because of the odd circumstance of bringing many similar articles on books by him to AfC at once. The other odd fact is that Mad White Giant was created (not by her) back in 2006, in very similar style. Did Allen or the publisher suggest that LadyNico should build on that success, I wonder? No way of proving it. I have for now simply declined all the AfC requests as V, lacking sources - the obvious alternative is Adv. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:46, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

list of cathedrals

FYI, I undid the changes in the list of cathedrals in the United States article, figuring that information about the metropolitan area was of encyclopedic value in such a list; with very few exceptions the city in parentheses is the central city of the SMSA or CMSA in which the cathedral is located. (In a few cases a reference to a more general region is made.) In a very few cases, a district within a city is commonly known by and has mail addressed to a different name (notably districts in Queens in New York City and the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, and Eagle River in Anchorage.) I generally tried to put those in subheadings for those cities, though it is not totally consistent yet.

Removing the names of the major cities associated with suburbs/secondary cities where cathedrals are located makes the article less informative IMHO.

The format for districts in a municipality had been like that shown in New York City, which has multiple cases of this. I have changed/restored the two other similar cases, Eagle River (Anchorage) and Sherman Oaks (Los Angeles) to the same format as those used in NYC.

There are a number of cases in which Latin rite Catholic Church has multiple dioceses in a single metro area, each named after the city the cathedral is located. Metuchen, NJ; Joliet, IL; Gary, IN, Paterson, NJ, San Bernardino CA. It seems to me reasonable and consistent to leave these unlabeled, and I removed a couple such labels, though Metuchen as an extremely small see city in the NY/NENJ metro area, may be a different case. Identifying Rockville Centre as “Long Island” seemed to make sense in that Rockville Centre diocese covers Nassau and Suffolk Counties, precisely the area popularly referred to as “Long Island”

However, most cathedrals in suburbs govern larger regional, multi-state or national dioceses of Orthodox, Eastern Catholic, Anglican, or Old Catholic churches, in which the municipality in which the cathedral lies rarely names the diocese. In these cases, the naked name of the suburban municipality in which a cathedral sits is inadequate IMHO. – e.g. the only U.S. cathedral for Orthodox Copts from Egypt in Lithonia, GA.

The cumbersome hyphenated census bureau metro area names, which often include much smaller cities than the largest and most familiar name (Cleveland-Elyria-Lorain), and sometimes combine major cities, (San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland) seems to add extraneous information and be pedantic IMHO. I have simply named the major central city and “area.” (except for Chicago/Gary in NW Indiana.)

While I agree that there was a lot of messing about with the COI sockpuppeting, the one thing that did seem correct was the move to Green Leaves. It was by far the more common name among those sources that I could find. Just because NRHP goes its own way does not over-rule WP:COMMONNAME, surely? "disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic)" is certainly true. No. Go to the Davenport list, add "|nocity=1" parameter to {{NRHP header}}, and add "|nocity=1" to each example of {{NRHP row}} between "|address=___" and "|county=Scott County, Iowa". 1RR restriction and exemptionfor reverting IPs

Hi there. I just noticed you blocked Nasseriya for edit warring at Qana airstrike. As far as I knew, reverts of IPs do not count when for 1RR. The reasonfor this exemption is to allow users to revert possible socks who are not editing under their main accounts. I don't think its fair to block Nasseriya for violating 1RR. The IP was blanking sourced material and refused to follow my advice to discuss his edit on the talk page. He was being clearly disruptive and while Nasseriya should have left him a message too, he/she probably saw my message and thought he wasn't into talking. Could you please reconsider the block? At first glance this looked like a perfectly legitimate block. But, if you look at the notice at the top of their talk page, it actually does say "edits by anonymous IP editors, may be reverted without penalty." Yes. Wikipedia is based on discussion, and speedy deletion when discussion has occurred is in violation of the spirit of provisions at WP:CSD. Why are you so opposed to going to AFD? We're not on a deadline, and a few extra days won't hurt. Bear in mind that speedy deletion was created to ease the workload on deleting admins, not to take extra time from them to force them to explain why they won't delete specific pages. Why am I opposed to AfD? I'm not. In fact, that's the first place I went, as that was an option raised by one of the three editors discussing the article -- all three of whom agree that the article should be deleted. When I arrived at the AfD page and began following the instructions, I read that I must first: Carry out these checks - 1. Confirm that the article does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion... So off I went to the Speedy Deletion page, where I found that the article unquestionably met the (A7) criteria, so that is the process I followed. I understand that WP:SD was created to save time and work, for Admins and editors of the article; but you should bear in mind that dismissing that option without proper substantiation after it has been properly applied is likely to result in additional work. That's what we now have here.

With respect, I don't see that on the policy page. (Note that I requested a "citable" provision, to avoid just this kind of disagreement in interpretations.) This appears to be the applicable "spirit of provisions" text:

Speedy deletion is intended to reduce the time spent on deletion discussions for pages or media with no practical chance of surviving discussion.[1] Administrators should take care not to speedy delete pages or media except in the most obvious cases. If a page has survived its most recent deletion discussion, it generally should not be speedy deleted except for newly discovered copyright violations.

During article improvement and sourcing discussions, all three editors discovered that the article shouldn't exist in the first place, and had no practical chance of surviving a deletion discussion. That appears to be exactly in line with the spirit of the CSD policy. Bottom line (if I may use frank terms to summarize): You saw a talk page discussion with the word 'delete' in it and totally understandably, but mistakenly, assumed there was a "deletion debate", instead of the actual "It should be deleted - yeah, I agree - yeah, me too" observation. When I questioned your action, it put you on the defensive, so you have tried to justify your action, which resulted in your implication that I am mistaken (and rushing things? and wasting your time?), which has put me on the defensive. And now we have this silly tempest in a tea cup. I still do not see why you are opposed to the speedy deletion of that article, and I'm not inclined to entertain speculation about it at this time. I think you misunderstood. You wrote "We're not going to move the disambiguation page here", but that's the opposite of the intent, which is to move Quantum Leap (TV series) to Quantum Leap, per WP:DAB, etc., and the consensus discussion I linked to; the DAB page is at Quantum leap (disambiguation) where it belong. The parenthetical disambiguator " (TV series)" is unnecessary, and it is routine, uncontroversial maintenance to remove such disambiguators if/when they are not needed. No, I'm definitely not going to start a new one :-) I'm always running into situtions when a link is overcapitalised; for a purely random example, see Quality of Life. It's no worse than any other capitalisation error when the overcapitalised link redirects to the proper title, but when we have two articles whose titles are otherwise identical, it can be substantially more problematic. It's not just an issue for links; it would be more convenient for most people who put "Quantum Leap" into the search box if it were a redirect to the disambiguation page. Combine that with the fact that "Quantum Leap" (the title, not the subject of the article) can easily be confused with other items listed at Quantum leap and the fact that nobody's going to think that Quantum Leap (TV series) refers to anything except the TV series, and we're left with a situation that's less helpful for the general reader. I guess I can see that, though it is very common for us to not DAB titles if the capitalization already differentiates the work from the non-proper-name namesake. But I'm not sure what's "substantially problematic" about hatnotes and such. Someone looking for the scientific concept won't have their heads asplode if they first end up at the TV show article. Always going to the DAB page when the capitalization is (usually intentionally) used just means that people trying explicitly to get to the TV show article never get there on the first try (a bit of a "scorched earth" or "poisoning the well" solution, like "if I can't get to the article I want on the first try no one can!"). I think it's unwise for us to try to optimize for people who either Capitalize Weirdly Like This Because They're Strange or PEOPLE WHO PAY NO ATTENTION TO UPPER OR LOWER CASE even proper names like texas and einstein, because they have difficulty typing. Real life tends to be case-sensitive to a degree, and people like this are used to not always getting what they expect, just like people with terrible spelling. We have a criterion for speedy deletion of unlikely typos like "exersism" for "exorcism" because there's little net value in trying to compensate for reader carelessness and it encourages careless editing when readers cross the reader/editor line. That said, it's probably not a big deal, and I guess the real solution is to find an album, song, or movie titled Quantum Leap and write an article about it; that would force disambiguation back to "Quantum Leap (TV series)". Your history merge, in this case, caused a little problem, in my opinion. Please, note that I know you were acting with the best intentions, but you created a situation where Darkness Shines nominated Pakofilia for deletion; the article was deleted; he created a new version of the article without much of the OR and BLP violations the previous article suffered from. The version TopGun had in his sandbox, the one that you histmerged, once again contained many of those violations. And now Darkness Shines cannot remove them because of his interaction ban. However, the speedy deletion rationale you used is only valid for an image explicitly marked as noncommercial or no derivatives, and when you have no more evidence than that feeling, it's also not enough for a deletion as a copyvio. Oh I know, I'm talking to Moviehub as he removes my messages to him!! but this sort of thing is a major problem for regulars on here. A similar thing happened a week or two ago with Gobichettipalayam when an editor kept removing content and insisting on sub articles and it went to 3RR. I reported it and awaited patiently for an admin to revert the edits back to version I had sourced and cleaned up yet nobody would do anything and Mooriddengirl said the same thing about being "involved" so unable to take action. In the end I reverted again myself and was disappointed nobody would look into it. The problem like this seems to occur over edits which are not vandalism but still degrade the quality of the article. I'm sure this happens to quite a lot of the regulars and its frustrating to deal with. And because they are so persistent with the reverting its difficult to try to appraoch them and discuss it because they label you a "vandal". I'm of the opinion that in such cases, which are not blatant vandalism, but poor edits, that the regular editors should be entrusted to block out persistent reverts by newbies and we should all generally assume good faith in their knowledge of the article. The problem is that the text exaggerates the success of it and is misleading. It sounds like it is written by a tourist guide promoting tourism and ranting on about how the industry is world class and such. I have no objections to the occasional old style wording but not when you come away with more subjective than factual information. One could completely reword and source it perhaps but I'm not sure it is really suitable. Non-penetrative sex article

As I stated at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, why bypass MuZemike's decision without asking him why he extended the block? Anyone can see from the article's edit history why he extended the block. There has been persistent WP:Sockpuppetry on that article, with the sockpuppet coming back to make the same or close to the same (disputed) edits soon after obtaining another IP address or registered account, or soon after the lock on the article has lifted. Setting it to late April is too short. There is no doubt that this sockpuppet will be right back there socking not long after the 24th. But if he has to wait most of the year to edit the article, he might just get the point and give up thinking he can rule the article. Having the article full-protected for so long will not hurt the article, seeing as it is not high-traffic in views or editing. So we might as well full-protect it for a significantly long time instead of having to put up with the same sockpuppet every other day, week or month. 107.22.58.115 (talk) 05:22, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Not on the Iron Law, although I'd like to revisit this issue. As of now I see that paper as rather narrow, and likely not stressing the limitations enough. That there was no Iron Law detected at WP:V does not mean that Iron Law does not exist elsewhere on Wikipedia. What that paper did, I hope, is to show that Iron Law does not affect all aspects of Wikipedia. The type of edits one makes may be an interesting determinant. You may know of editcounters; note those which give a nice breakdown of edits by namespace and run them on some users. Results can be interesting, but so far I have not done any real research on that, nor can I recall a paper that did so (at least, not off the top of my head). But check latest Signpost edition on research (~2 weeks ago; or the one before that...); there was a very interesting paper looking at the language used by admins and non-admins, and how it influences relationships between the editors. After considering your comments, I think you did choose the most appropriate photo. The article is about the list of markers, and so something actually showing a marker is best. The one you chose at least is framed by a scenic green background. The one of the Cairo Skywatch Tower would be too small at 100x100px and has a less pleasant backdrop. Probably best as is. We conduct a visual inventory of markers for each county at least once every 4 years and keep images on file. Indiana State Historical Markers are the property of the State of Indiana. The research, texts, and images of markers are all public and in the public domain, as part of the Indiana State Historical Marker Program run by the Indiana Historical Bureau. Starting this year, we'll be shifting a lot of our marker survey image intake (traditionally from a small group of volunteers) to Flickr, so any marker images this summer and beyond will come with Creative Commons licenses of their own based on the wishes of our expanded group of marker hunters, and higher resolution images than we display online will be available. In the interim, once I figure out verbiage, I'll add a note to our website that specifies an attribution is all that is required on IHB content unless otherwise specified (the exceptions being IHB images of 'The Fall of Fort Sackville," Miami flag, and the Paul Hadley state banner). Once our staff edits the statement for grammar and length, I'll put it up on our About Us page (http://www.in.gov/history/aboutus.htm), hopefully before the end of the month. You're welcome. It's not that hard if you ignore the wizard; I've never figured it out either, so I use the following steps: (1) Simply take the basic attribution data (with links, in this case) from the Commons file and copy them into a Notepad file; (2) Download the maximum resolution of the Commons file; (3) Go to Special:Upload, find the downloaded file on your hard drive, and click it; (4) Copy/paste the contents of the Notepad file into the big text box; (5) Click the bottom of the page that actually uploads the file; (6) Protect the file for however long it's supposed to be on the Main Page. Re: your edit summary on Template:NoCommons

You asked "why was this deleted instead of being redirected [like Template:Nocommons]?".

It looks Template:Nocommons was originally a redirect to Template:NoCommons. After Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2011 September 27#Template:NoCommons, Template:NoCommons was redirected to Template:Keep local, and a bot then updated Template:Nocommons to fix the double redirect. Then someone bypassed all the uses of the Template:NoCommons redirect, and then they filed another TFD at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2012 January 9#Template:NoCommons to get the redirect deleted. But when they did that, no one noticed that Template:Nocommons existed or they probably would have deleted that one too.

I don't care either way (so I won't bother doing anything about it myself), but it might be equally appropriate to delete both redirects per the second TFD. Anomie⚔ 16:38, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm still not clear what you're asking. Do you mean "Of all the people who lived during the fourteenth century, how many of them would have identified as Lollards at some point in their lives?" Or are you meaning "If there had been a 100%-accurate religious census of England, how many Lollards would it have found?" Firstly, I'd like to thank you for helping me with the difficulty I was having with 97.118.173.171 (talk · contribs), who was removing legitimate, valid information which I was adding, without explaining, and, by the way, in your edit summary, you stated "Dpm". I'm simply curious as to what that stands for.

Also, since you are an administrator, is it possible that you could review my text file and add the reference to the whitelist, or do you believe that the link should not be included in Wikipedia? My problem was, that I used that as a reference for at least some of the information I added there, in addition to using the articles GNIS and the National Elevation Dataset as references for the statement, given that the NWS point forecast shows it to be 5278 feet on its map (which is likely sourced from that) as well as in light of what was stated on the talk page (see bottom section).

Dpm doesn't stand for anything: it's a mistake for don't. If you look at my second edit, you'll see that my edit summary refers to changes that I made in the first edit. I had put my fingers too far right on the keyboard: I typed "p" instead of "o", "m" instead of "n", and then I ended the edit summary by hitting Enter instead of typing the apostrophe key. I was planning to say something along the lines of "Don't delete valid information".

As far as the whitelist: I definitely will not. Proper changes to the whitelist require a decent understanding of regex, and an admin who modifies it without understanding regex risks breaking the whitelist completely. I don't understand regex at all, so I would be a very bad candidate for implementing your changes. Please feel free to request that another admin do it, whether at the administrators' noticeboard or at a specific administrator's talk page. I think that there's a better place to request the change, but I can't find it — I'm at a motel, and their Internet is about as slow as dialup, so I'm unable to look for pages that would be better. I attempted to leave this response immediately after leaving the talkback at your talk page, but it's taken me until now, over half an hour, for this message finally to be posted.
