Trionyx aquitanicus

Trionyx aquitanicus has been added as a species of Trionyx. That isn't a modern name but I was looking to find out what it refers to now. In the Paleobiology Database it is listed as 'Trionyx aquitanicus was named by Delfortrie (1869). It is extant.'

Maybe this paper could help us? Delfortrie, E. 1869. Les chéloniens du Miocène supérieur de la Gironde. Actes Soc. Linnéenne Bordeaux 27:399-440. from http://www.chelonian.org/taxonomic-turtle-literature/ Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 22:58, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
Per this entry in the British Museum records it is a partial fossil form the Miocene of France. "Trionyx+aquitanicus"&source=bl&ots=Pd1AXjSZ1y&sig=KBxsrxTUfqhNM8YGUuybl-W-mps&hl=en&sa=X&ei=VMQpUPftCaeoiAK2voDwCg&ved=0CDcQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Fossil%20%22Trionyx%20aquitanicus%22&f=false The PBDB can be spotty at best on areas where there is no active researchers.--Kevmin § 03:34, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi Kevmini, the PBDB maybe out of date (my experience) but as they said 'It is extant' I can't help wondering that it referees to some extant turtle. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 07:55, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

WP Turtles in the Signpost

Nomenclatural Opinion affecting 2 species.

The ICZN recently handed down its opinions on two cases relevant to us. BZN Opinion 2315 is relevant to the Northern snake-necked turtle in particular but also to the Narrow-breasted snake-necked turtle. The decision was to reject the reversal of names and to maintain priority. This means that the name for the Northern snake-necked turtle is Chelodina (Macrochelodina) oblonga instead of Chelodina (Macrochelodina) rugosa as we have it. It must be said that this may not be popular and that there may be further submissions on this. However, in the interrim the official name for the species is established. The name for the Narrow-breasted snake-necked turtle is confirmed as Chelodina (Macrodiremys) colliei by this decision, which is what we have. We need to decide how we wish to name these species.
The other case is BZN Opinion 2316 which is relevant to the species Aldabra giant tortoise the name has been conserved as Aldabrachelys gigantea which is what we are currently using. This opinion can be cited for those who wish to use one of the alternatives available. Aldabrachelys gigantea is now the official name of this species.

Image error?

There's a photo image in the "Northern red-bellied cooter" article of an Eastern painted turtle, identified correctly as such by its caption, which enlarges into a page erroneously titled "Northern red-bellied cooter". Considering nowhere in the article on the Northern red-bellied cooter is the Eastern painted turtle even mentioned, the insertion of its image would seem to be a mistake. Thanks ----- Janice Byer, Delaware, USA — Preceding unsigned comment added by Janbyer (talkcontribs) 04:54, 24 June 2013 (UTC) P.S. On the article page, I've amended he image caption to clarify it's not the species featured but a related one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Janbyer (talkcontribs) 04:01, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Tortoises

I didn't think I would have to bring this up again (I've already been in a couple edit wars over this), but in many varieties of English and for many speakers, tortoises and turtles can be considered mutually distinct families of chelonian—tortoises are land-dwelling, whereas turtles are sea-dwelling. I've seen some edits made by members of WPT arguing that turtles are a superset of tortoises, which is how the matter is considered in at least American English, but not in many other dialects. See this section for additional information.  — TORTOISEWRATH 18:51, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

What exactly is the point and issue here please. All tortoises are turtles, that's what they are, tortoise refers to members of the Testudinidae. In any case the link you provided shows that this is still very innacurate when its applied for vernacular names. For example Australia has one species of semiaquatic turtle, all the rest are aquatic, many completely. Cheers, Faendalimas talk 07:01, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Funnily enough, I just made a related point at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Turtle#Not_correct. In fact, in common UK usage (don't know about scientific usage), all tortoises definitely are not turtles. In common UK usage, turtles live in the sea (or sometimes rivers) and tortoises live on land. 86.130.67.106 (talk) 22:50, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately you are looking at this from the point of view of vernacular names, these are innacurate, and varied in their usage, even within countries. There can be no concensus on this as there are so many meanings of the terms. However, the correct names, and the scientific ones, have their placement and need to have priority. This is because they at least have a foundation in descriptive facts about these animals. People keep bringing up common names without any knowledge of how they refer across scientific names. If you are going to take the time to gather information about common names, at least spend the time to learn the scientific names. Also what the term Family means in Zoology. Cheers Faendalimas talk 12:42, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
I did not need to "take time to gather information" because this is common usage and common knoweldge in the UK. Anyone in the UK will tell you the same: tortoises live on land and turtles live in the water. I have no problem with articles using scientific terminology in the main, but common names, and their regional differences, must be correctly explained also. The Turtle article has such a section, which is good, but the information that it gives is incorrect as regards the UK, which is not good. 86.171.43.122 (talk) 17:31, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Leaflet For Wikiproject Turtles At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:31, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages

Greetings WikiProject Turtles/Archive 3 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 18:17, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Turtles/Archive 3/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Turtles.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Turtles, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:59, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Request for comment on recommending usage of automatic taxoboxes

There is an RfC regarding recommending usage of automatic taxoboxes at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of Life#Request for comments: Should the automatic taxobox system be the current recommended practice?. Inviting anybody who watches this page to contribute their thoughts to that thread.

WikiProject Turtles is currently using automatic taxoboxes in 79.2% of project tagged articles that have any form of taxobox. Plantdrew (talk) 01:35, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Asian softshell turtle

Seems a dab or redirect will be required for this term or similar. Been editing of this article. Looking at the 2017 checklist, Nilssonia (turtle) is given, ref 78 on page 231. Asian giant softshell turtle is also used on Cantor's giant softshell turtle. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 18:22, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Several of the asian softshell species are known as Asian Giant Softshell, at least 3 of them. To me the common names are often almost useless if not ambiguous, many referring to several species. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 20:18, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
In the process of creating a few disambiguation pages around these names. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 01:03, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

Herpetology subgroups.

Cheloniology, Cheloniologist, Testudinology, Testudinologist. These terms seem a bit specific and perhaps don't meet Wikipedia notability. Thoughts? Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 15:48, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Merge to herpetology. There are barely any incoming links from article space. The only references provided are for content that doesn't really belong in the article (phylogeny and conservation aren't very relevant to cheloniology as a discipline). It's not a very good article, the term is over-specialized and not really used much, better just to redirect it. Plantdrew (talk) 15:54, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Subfamilies of Chelidae

Hi @Sun Creator: noticed you just made a redirect for Chelid subfamilies, typo in Chelinae you have Chelidinae, the name is formed from the genus Chelus, hence is extended to Chelinae. Other two are correct. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 22:19, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

I don't recall making redirects. Perhaps you mean I updated the talk page? Or perhaps you could refresh me on which pages I made redirects for. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 22:35, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
My apologies it is an old edit I thought it was part of your changes to to create, anyway this redirect Chelidinae will need to be moved to Chelinae, it also appears on the project page. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 22:56, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
Well, I changed that but it's now a double redirect as Chelidinae redirect to Chelinae which redirect to Chelidae. So Chelidinae can redirect straight to Chelidae which it how it was. I'm confused! Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 23:44, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
No one ever made pages for the subfamilies, which is probably not necessary. So the only info on them is contained in the page on the family. So the links should have been fro the mentions of the subfamilies on any taxobox that uses them to the family page. However the redirect pages were made. Its a little messy, but there would be very little to say about the subfamilies for pages of their owm. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 23:58, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
Geoemydinae, Cyclanorbinae, Emydinae, Kinosterninae, Staurotypinae, Trionychinae and Cheloniinae are subfamily articles. However they are all stubs and little can be said in them, perhaps redirect them to the family level. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 00:18, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

Checking reptiles

Checking other reptiles I did find that some subfamily article exist, Tomistominae, Gryposuchinae, Mekosuchinae, Brookesiinae although some are missing i.e Litoriinae Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 20:16, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

To do

Taxon updates

Some taxon updates, a few long overdue:

All extant turtles now have one of the automatic taxoboxes {{Automatic taxobox}}, {{Speciesbox}}, {{Subspeciesbox}}, {{Hybridbox}} or {{Hybridbox/lua}}. About 34 extinct turtle articles still have a manual taxobox.

If in doubt of any turtle taxonomy please check the IUCN TTWG 2017 document TURTLES OF THE WORLD Annotated Checklist and Atlas of Taxonomy, Synonymy, Distribution, and Conservation Status (8th Ed.). Especially changes page 15 which has updates since previous edition. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 05:47, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

Yes definitely follow this and the Reptile Database I would also suggest that when examining what and why different splits have occurred that they read the annotations in the Turtles of the World PDF, this is open access freely available for download for anyone writing on turtles. The annotations give you all the references and reasoning behind any changes. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 14:45, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
  • The remaining 34 extinct turtle articles have been converted to use an automatic taxobox. So all relevant articles now have a variation of an automatic taxobox. Sun Creator(talk) 14:27, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Taxonbar

All taxon turtle articles now have a {{taxonbar}} template. Sun Creator(talk) 12:32, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Well, except for Arizona mud turtle/Kinosternon arizonense. But that needs to get sorted out in Wikidata and other databases (I just wanted to note the issue here in hopes that it can be revisited as other databases update). Plantdrew (talk) 15:47, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
Done Arizona mud turtle, Kinosternon arizonense and Florida mud turtle are now added/corrected. Sun Creator(talk) 09:34, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

Giant tortoise

Something wants to be done with the article Giant tortoise, it's not taxonomically correct. It's a mixing up of various tortoise genus, species and subspecies that results in a misleading mess. I'm not sure what would be appropriate way to resolve it in this case. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 20:16, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

A disambiguation page like Giant lizard, Giant frog, Large frog. Giant earthworm, Giant squid, Giant octopus seems suitable. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 20:34, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
Considering making Giant tortoise (disambiguation). Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 20:51, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
For this to be helpful, I think the phrase Giant tortoise to redirect to Giant tortoise (disambiguation). Right now the problems with Giant tortoise still exist, so I think that article should be considered for deletion and replaced with the disambiguation page. Thoughts? starsandwhales (talk) 14:17, 10 December 2019 (UTC)
agree with delete/ merge of giant tortoise into the various mainspace articles on the various species, retain only the disambig page. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 21:55, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

Chelodina colliei versus Chelodina oblonga

I sometimes come across the Southwestern snake-necked turtle on my travels, usually crossing roads, and like to take pictures of them after ensuring they make it safely across. There is however a bit of confusion on Commons about this. Chelodina colliei is, I believe, the correct category and name for the Southwestern snake-necked turtle. There is however also a category Chelodina oblonga, which also states that it is the Southwesterrn snake-necked turtle or Narrow-breasted snake-necked turtle. From what I understand however, Chelodina oblonga is an outdated name and Chelodina rugosa should be used instead, and only for the Northern snake-necked turtle. I'm unqualified to sort this out as I don't fully understand what is correct or not. If an expert could look at this potential mix up it would help other users greatly.
