Wishing all Singaporeans a Happy Chinese New Year! I brought plenty of Mandarin oranges to pass around. Enjoy the food, which includes yusheng, bakkwa and jiaozi! I hope someone has a hongbao for me (as a junior college student, I did not benefit from Budget 2009).

A new year symbolises a new beginning and this year has certainly begun well. On the first day of 2009, Red Ensign of Singapore attained GA status; our GA tally has thus doubled from 20 to 40 in less than nine months. Then our 18-month FA drought was broken, thanks to Jappalang, who wrote Toa Payoh ritual murders. Two of my articles also achieved GA status in January - Denise Phua (10 January) and Yip Pin Xiu (today, the second day of Chinese New Year). Last but not least, Aldwinteo is back and Poh Ern Shih Temple is his latest GA.

I wish to thank and congratulate my fellow SGpedians for their excellent contributions. You all rock! May we have a wonderful year ahead, both in real life and on Wikipedia. In the past, I used to encourage everyone to write GAs, while not writing much myself. Since a new year has come and I have more GA-writing experience, I promise that this will change. Besides encouraging others to write GAs, I will do lots of GA writing. Seeing Zscout370 put in so much effort to get Flag of Singapore past FAC (so it can be the National Day FA), I have decided to write four articles (two GAs and two DYKs) for the National Day project. Jacklee, Zscout370 and I are discussing the National Day project and more details will be released soon. I hope a few more SGpedians will pitch in and give us even more reason to celebrate on National Day.

In January 2009, the article failed FAC, but we shall not give up! We want our national flag to fly on National Day, not just at the National Day parade, but on the Main Page of Wikipedia! I would like to add some comments here - It's unrealistic to nomimate more when there's an outstanding backlog of 11 suggested articles previously. As many of the original contributors has already moved on, or left SGpedia to date, I don't think anyone would be able to fill up this 'numbers game' which you initiated months ago. Moving forward, clear the backlog first or collaborate on a selected few in future. Keep it simple & short - e.g. like choosing 5 potential articles for a start - and not by giving us a growing laundry list (Leave the article commentaries to the GA nominees/reviewers please) that's languishing as an eyesore now. Lastly, respect is earned, not demanded or being hinted at, otherwise, people may deem such individuals silly and shallow too. -- Kulikah (talk) 07:42, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm still here, but not active as of late. Anyways, the problem with the FAC was that I fixed the image issues but the person never came back to confirm the work. There will be a research seminar by PhD candidate Hu Meiqun entitled Predicting Outcome of Collaborative Featured Article Nomination in Wikipedia at the School of Information Studies, Singapore Management University, on 4 May 2009. The abstract of the seminar is below:

In Wikipedia, good articles are wanted. While Wikipedia relies on collaborative effort from online volunteers for quality checking, the process of selecting top quality articles is time consuming. At present, the duty of decision making is shouldered by only a couple of administrators. Aiming to assist in the quality checking cycles so as to cope with the exponential growth of online contributions to Wikipedia, this work studies the task of predicting the outcome of featured article (FA) nominations. We analyze FA candidate (FAC) sessions collected over a period of 3.5 years, and examine the extent to which consensus has been practised in this process. We explore the use of interaction features between FAC reviewers to learn SVM classifiers to predict the nomination outcome. We find that, calibrating the individual user's polarity of opinions as features improves the prediction accuracy significantly.

DYK for Buddha's Birthday and Vesak

Hi, everyone. We have a DYK event for Buddha's Birthday and Vesak just like events for Christmas or April Fool's day. Many culture of Singapore is based on Buddhism, so I think you guys can create/edit interesting Buddhist articles in upcoming five days. Once you create or five fold expand Buddhist related articles (famous temples, monks, movies, literature, paintings, foods, etc) within 5 days, and then nominate it to the below place. After a review, your article can be featured on the main page. So be hurry if you are interested. :) Thanks.

Thank you for informing all here. Except for this Peranakan SGpedian, who used to singlehandedly contribute lots of S'pore-related DYKs, as well as GAs and self-made images, on the heritage and Buddhism of S'pore previously. I don't think there's anyone here who can do so with such flair and passion, especially as a content creator or 'One-Man Show' like him. Unfortunately, as seen from his editing history and non reply on his talkpage to date, he seem to have retire for good now. As SGpedia has a limited pool of committed DYK/GA contributors, it's a great lost for SGpedia to lose such talented content writers subsequently over time. Reformatting of MRT station tables

User:SBSinTransit has gone and changed the formatting of all MRT station lists, removing clear indications of line transfers and replacing them with street addresses and postcodes for the stations, surely one of the most useless bits of info there is. In addition, every single station is tagged with the same pointless little train icon. Is any of this worth salvaging, or should we just revert wholesale? I do kind of like the miniature station pictures at North South MRT Line though... Jpatokal (talk) 05:20, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

I don't really work on MRT-related articles, but why not keep the miniature station photographs and street addresses and postcodes, re-add the line transfers and remove the train icons? (I suppose the train icons would make more sense in a table showing interchanges between trains and other forms of public transport such as buses.) On SingNet and getting hit with Tor block notices lately?

If you use SingNet as your ISP and edit Wikipedia, you've probably been getting lots of semi-random Tor block notices lately. This is because some admin fluffed up a block, and Mediawiki does a really bad job of handling Tor blocks in the first place — see Wikipedia talk:Blocking policy/Tor nodes#Collateral damage from Tor blocks for discussion and a workaround (use proxy.singnet.com.sg:8888). Comments from other SGpedians affected by this would be welcome, so the gurus responsible understand the magnitude of the problem. Jpatokal (talk) 11:30, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

The TorBlock extension will disallow all actions (editing, deleting, etc.) unless a user is explicitly given the IP block exemption flag. The recent surge in blockings is due to the change in configuration made by the server admins. Both StarHub and SingTel have configuration problems with their proxy servers, thus multiple users (a few hundred?) can be tor-blocked at once. You can edit Wikipedia via the secure gateway if you have been tor-blocked. A long term solution, however, is to ultimately alert the ISPs to this situation. Chenzw  Talk  15:45, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

SingNet is already using XFF, which reveals the originating IP behind the proxy, and Wikimedia's ranges have now been adjusted to recognize it. So, for SingNet at least, this problem should be resolved for the moment. Jpatokal (talk) 05:11, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

The relevant guideline is "Wikipedia:Conflict of interest". In this case, I think your suspicions may be right, though of course there is no conclusive evidence. However, most of the article seems to be fairly neutral. You might want to see if there has been any critical commentary on the campaign and add it to the article. There are also quite a lot of references stated in the "Further reading" section – perhaps some of these could be turned into inline references. Thanks. Some suggestions:

• You need to give references for the information in the article.
• Why do you refer to Singapore island as Pulau Ujong? This does not seem to be a common usage.
• The highest point in Singapore is not Bukit Merah but Bukit Timah.
• I'd suggest that the "Interpretation of easternmost and westernmost" section be moved to the top.
• Do a spell check!

Sorry but I don't see any significance of this particular article and have move to strike, I just nominated it for CSD A7. In my opinion, it should have been properly researched and then written as a main article about "The street gang (and related activities) in Singapore" instead, while maintaining impartiality and describe all of them instead of singling one out for the limelight, which is kind of bad energy if you know what I mean. --Dave1185 (talk) 19:51, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Reform Party (Singapore)

Hi, I recenty edited the article Reform Party (Singapore) from a redirect page. Please feel free to edit it --Kumaran59 (talk) 18:36, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

The text is now written from the point of view of the party, particularly the "Ideals" section ("Specifically we believe that", "We believe in the creation of", and so on). It should be rewritten such that it refers to the party in the third person ("The Party believes that", etc.). Also, the text appears to have been lifted directly from the party's website and may thus constitute a breach of copyright. To avoid this problem, the text should be rephrased. Finally, you will need to add inline citations to show exactly which parts of the text are supported by which citations. Fauna, Flora and Wildlife articles

I've made the wildlife article recently in a slow attempt to have decent ones for all of Asia. The Singapore one is fairly short and I wish to expand it - however there already the Fauna of Singapore and Flora of Singapore articles. So unless any of you intend to expand the Fauna/Flora articles I suggest I'll merge the two into the Wildlife of Singapore article so we'll have one decent article. My suggestion is here. It seems to me that "Fauna of Singapore" and "Flora of Singapore" are capable of future growth at some stage, so it would be better to leave them as separate articles. "Wildlife of Singapore" should really be a summary of those articles, and have a {{Main}} hatnote at the top of the relevant sections referring to those articles. (An aside: should "Wildlife of Singapore" cover Singapore's flora? I would have thought that wildlife tends to refer to fauna only. But I am happy to be contradicted on the point.) What you could do is write "Wildlife of Singapore" first, then copy the relevant sections over to "Fauna of Singapore" and "Flora of Singapore" and expand those articles later on. — Cheers, JackLee ^–talk– 18:08, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Chilli crab

Chilli crab page has been vandalised a few times but luckily reverted and not further vandalism. It is under semi protection now. User User:Limkopi but the links provided are a bit err not reliable? since one link is provided by makansutra and the origin is quoted as a story. First of all this is English Wikipedia, if they wanted to know what the name of the place is in chinese etc, then they would go to chinese wikipedia. Secondly, chinese is only one of the 4 official languages of Singapore, with only English having the clear distinction as it is the working language of the country. So if you are to put the translations of a place in Singapore or a Singapore topic, either have it in English only, or all 4 languages for uniformity and fairness. Your take? I generally agree, although it may not always be possible to insert the name of a place in all four official languages immediately if, say, an editor does not know what a place is called in Mandarin or Tamil.
