Salaries

Can someone help me. The salary column used on the list of players on season articles. Is that the money the player makes or is it the price they were sold for at the auction? Thanks. Blue Square Thing (talk) 15:45, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

@Blue Square Thing:, That was a traded price. Fade258 (talk) 15:53, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
So it's not the amount that they are paid? In which case, salary is not the thing to call it, is it? Blue Square Thing (talk) 16:27, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Can anyone help put here? @Sagavaj: for example? Thanks. Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:09, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
@Blue Square Thing: IPL teams auction for the maximum amount they are willing to pay to get the player. The auctioned amount is the highest amount the player gets (assuming he is available for the entire season). For example: if a player is bought for 1cr during the auction 2022, the player gets 1cr each for the IPL season for three years (a total of 3crs for 3 seasons) if he is available (and not injured) during the entire IPL season irrespective of whether he plays all matches or not. In the case of unavailability, if I am not wrong, he gets 10% and pro-rated salary depending on how many matches he misses due to other commitments. Auctioned price is the salary for the player for a given season. Hope this helps. SaGa (talk) 15:50, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
In case of injury, player gets 50% for injured matches with the medical expenses paid by the IPL teams. I might be wrong in %ages since these are followed in earlier seasons. Not sure if this is changed since then. SaGa (talk) 15:53, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you - that's helpful. Do you think the column heading would be better as "auction price" or something like that? Blue Square Thing (talk) 16:00, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
BST, In my opinion that's sounds good for me. Fade258 (talk) 16:55, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
I started editing Wiki pages since 2016 and the word's been in use since the start. Even the sources including IPL website and ESPNcricinfo cite it as salary [1], [2]. I don't see reason behind changing the word though I also don't object it changing it to something else as long as it is relevant. SaGa (talk) 17:03, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
Perhaps a note added to say something along the lines of The amount a player if bought for at auction. This is also the maximum amount they player will have been paid over the course of the season. Teams had a maximum auction spend of XXX during the YYYY auction. Or something? On the grounds that if it confused me it'll presumably confuse others. Blue Square Thing (talk) 18:40, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
I think salary would be a better option as ESPN Cricinfo and IPL official website has been using this term. Fade258 (talk) 03:15, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@Blue Square Thing: I used to do the same as what you suggested in the beginning but during a GA review for one of the season articles, I was told that this information is not suitable for a season page but should be in the main article. If I remember correctly, the reason given was that it's something that doesn't change for every season and hence not needed in every season page. So had to remove it then. SaGa (talk) 18:13, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@Sagavaj: Interesting - I'll take a look at some point and see. Thanks for your help on this. Blue Square Thing (talk) 20:14, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Deccan Chargers

Module:Indian Premier League teams currently has "DCL" as the code for Delhi Capitals, as "DC" is used by Deccan Chargers. The Chargers last played ten years ago and the Capitals should play with the same name for quite a few more years. Wouldn't it be better if "DC" is given to the Capitals and the code for the Chargers is changed (to eg. "DEC")? I think it will help to remove the confusion while updating the results. Clog Wolf Howl 16:33, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

That wil be fine- In my opinion. Fade258 (talk) 17:07, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

2022 Indian Premier League

Hi @Clog Wolf:, Is it necessary to put colours too early in the group stage for top four of 2022 IPL. Fade258 (talk) 13:32, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Redirect

Hi @Lugnuts, A Simple Human, Clog Wolf, and Liz:, Recently, I know that there is two redirected teams names to only one teams name i.e Ahmedabad IPL Team and Ahmedabad Titans were redirected to the same article name Gujarat Titans. Is it fine? Or one should be deleted? Fade258 (talk) 09:02, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Auction on 16 Dec in Bengaluru

Hey, all! A happy and prosperous Diwali. And here in England we have Indian prime minister!

I propose for all players in IPL auction as WP:IPL standard that when IPL auction held we need to record 2023 team of player in each article, in infobox and in narrative with amount in crore.

Last year, and year before too I think, Indian editors did this and had arrogant interference from BS Thing person who think he is owner of cricket articles but do nothing to develop any. In one article, Cummins I think, he made insulting comment about crore to be something unknown outside India and should not be used in Wiki article. He is lately going round altering infoboxes as if that is most important thing to be done. Waste of time and waste of space. We must form resolve and resist intrusion into IPL coverage by this person. Again I wish all Happy Diwali. 92.30.241.178 (talk) 15:52, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

I agree with proposal and now 4 weeks to auction event 79.73.25.210 (talk) 07:14, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, I disagree with this proposal.
Firstly I think you should refrain from personal attacks when talking about other editors. Those aren't very nice things to say about someone.
Secondly, the way that the infoboxes are used (according to the infobox documentation) is that only clubs for whom the player has actually played a match should be included. I think this makes sense, because you could easily end up with people thinking that somebody has played for a team they haven't. It makes more sense to me to add it when they play their first game, not to add it as soon as they sign a contract then take it away at some point in the future. This is especially true with the IPL where a large number of international players end up pulling out of the tournament between the auction and the start date.
I'm also going to notify WP:CRIC about this discussion since it pertains to cricket player infoboxes. OliveYouBean (talk) 12:21, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
I certainly don't think the auction price should be included in the infobox – this is not core information about the player. Richard3120 (talk) 12:47, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
ENGVAR means you need to state prices /amounts using terminology consistent with the variety of English already used in the article. This means not using crore / lakh in articles about English/ Aussie/ South African/ West Indies cricketers. Spike 'em (talk) 13:00, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
I support the proposal – except for the "amount in crore" bit – because it meets the needs of our readers who should be able to see at a glance which team a player will represent in the next IPL. That is providing the player has been bought at auction, of course, and it is not the sort of transfer speculation common in football. A reader should be able to see at Sam Curran that he will play for Kings in IPL 2023 whereas there is no team at Pat Cummins because Pat has excluded himself from the tournament. If, however, Sam should decide not to take part, then the entry must be removed from his infobox. The point is that if the reader does not see 2023 Punjab Kings on Sam's page, they may well assume Sam, like Pat, is not taking part and that would be misinformation.
Template:Infobox cricketer does say Only include clubs that the player has actually played for. But, that instruction was included in the original version of the template and has never been amended. I doubt if it has ever been discussed either. The template was created in August 2007 before the IPL began and, at that time, player auctions in cricket were never envisaged. The advent of these auctions has presented complications. It's evident there has been some controversy over this point in the past and it has recurred in the last 24 hours, although we are now trying to resolve things amicably.
My suggestion would be amendment of the template along the lines of Only include clubs and franchises for whom the player has actually played, or for whom they are expected to play having been bought in a recognised tournament auction (e.g., Indian Premier League). This rules out speculative contracts or transfers and allows removal of the line from the infobox if the player withdraws from the tournament or, after the event, if they have not played in it for reasons such as injury or illness.
I agree with the two points immediately above about currency. We could use a conversion from crore/lakh to pounds, dollars, etc. and show both values, but in the narrative only.
Merry Christmas, everyone. BcJvs UTC 13:10, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
Given the actual bids are made in INR, we should probably report that as the headline amount, but using thousands/millions and then the players home currency in brackets. Could possibly then include lakh / crore in brackets too, but that may be excessive? Spike 'em (talk) 18:14, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
That's a good point. I think I would go for INR in the thousands/millions with home currency in brackets. I don't know if there's a site standard or guideline for expressing currency denominations. BcJvs UTC 22:42, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
Template:INRConvert is the thing to use. The parameters have the possibility to set, for example, crore and of linking them so that users who aren't familiar with the way of writing numbers can see how they work. I've used it on several articles recently and it seems to provide an obvious solution to the issue of how to write numbers. Blue Square Thing (talk) 12:57, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose WP:IPL shouldn't be demanding that they set the standards for cricket biographies. Most IPL players will have played for numerous cricket teams, and so the infobox should be kept consistent, rather than adding prices in for IPL only. The IPL price is not key information, and so should not be in the infobox. It should be covered in text with appropriate sourcing if needed, but infoboxes are for key information only. And as per WP:CRIC consensus, they should only be added to infoboxes when they play, not when they're drafted. Worth noting that those supporting this proposal include an IP creating this with personal attacks, and a blocked sockpuppet- that to me says a lot about the supposed merit of this proposal. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:30, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose as above. The initial IP at least is a probable sockpuppet of Boca Jovenes (themselves a sock puppet of a long-time sock master) and the data for the second has me suspicious, as does the timing of a comment Boca Jovenes left on my talk page. Blue Square Thing (talk) 12:55, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Unfortunately for the nominator, the contents of infoboxes are decided by consensus at WP:CRIC and not by a fork project. StickyWicket (talk) 15:03, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Copyright violation in finals articles

Multiple people have been adding the logos of teams to the infoboxes of IPL finals articles. I have removed them from the 2019-2023 finals articles, as they violate WP:NFCCP. Please remove them from all other articles, as they are blatant violations of Wikipedia's non-free content policy. The logos of teams may only be used on that team's article.
