Hillary Clinton Navboxes

I am having problems viewing {{Time 100s 2000s}} that I just added to Hillary Rodham Clinton. Is it appearing correctly for others?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:02, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

No, it fails. Adding the template exceeded a limit on the article and added the article to the hidden category Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded instead of transcluding all the templates at the bottom. I have reverted. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:21, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes. If you enable "Show hidden categories" at Special:Preferences#preftab-1 then you can see the category. The problem causes transclusions to stop when the limit is reached. In Clinton's case, all the navigation boxes were inside one huge template and caused that template to fail. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:29, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

sorting of US state

In the table in the US State article, the states aren't sorted correctly by area. The funny thing is that if I go back to the history of that article, I only get incorrectly sorted tables, even if I go back months, while I do remember accessing that article recently and it had a correct sort then, so apparently something has changed in how sorting works at Wikipedia rather the article itself. --Merijn2 (talk) 00:17, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Hm. Sorting is done alphabetically if there are any letters in the field at all. I believe that it will only sort numbers correctly if the field is purely numeric. The unit labels in the spaces screw up the sorting algorithm, and make it think that it is an alphabet sorting problem, so it basically sorts by the first digit. I think in order to fix this you would need to rewrite the table so it only had numbers in that column. --Jayron32 00:25, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

The area fields call {{convert}} with the parameter sortable=on, for example {{convert|135,765|km2|abbr=on|sortable=on|disp=flip}}, so the problem is apparently in {{convert}}. The html of the rendered page contains the code <span style="display:none">&<strong class="error">Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character ","</strong></span> in front of the displayed area where the hidden sort key should have been. If I preview with the commas removed from all the areas then the sorting is correct so it appears {{convert}} cannot generate sortable numbers when the input has commas. The output has commas even if the input doesn't, so I think the solution is simply to remove the commas. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:42, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

insurance

I would like to create a disambiguation page for “Insurance”. It seems like there are quite a lot of definition articles with the word or term “insurance”. Where can I request that? An editor since 10.28.2010. 02:18, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation pages are created and edited just like all other pages. Insurance seems like the primary topic so a disambiguation page could be created at Insurance (disambiguation). Note however that Wikipedia is not a dictionary. There is wiktionary:insurance for that. A disambiguation page should contain links to articles users may be looking for when they enter "Insurance" in the search field. I'm not sure there is basis for a disambiguation page. Template interwiki links appearing in portals

I notice that in Portal:Metro Detroit the template interwiki links are appearing, when they should not.

I tried editing Template:Box portal skeleton/doc and I haven't found the way to get them to stop appearing in portals WhisperToMe (talk) 02:55, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

When a portal is created by subst-ing this template, the contents of the template are copied into the page at that point, and any future changes to the template have no effect. In this case the portal was created on 10 Feb 2010, before the template was edited to solve this problem. The fix, which I have just done, is to edit the portal page itself. Admins can block themselves. It would appear as all other blocks do. Admins can not unblock themselves at this time, I believe, although they have been able to in the past. —GFOLEY FOUR!— 04:37, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Everyone on Wikipedia can see every page. There's no setting for sharing.

For example, the only page you've made is User:Amjad_Khan_Awan - we can all see, and edit it. I just edited it, and linked 'Dubai' to our article on the topic (with this edit).

If you want to make a 'live' (mainspace) article, that can be found on Google, see WP:FIRST and use WP:WIZARD. Best,  Chzz  ►  09:08, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

You must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.

Once the image is uploaded, the edit you have made will be correct: find "image = something" within the infobox and change it to "image = something else". -- John of Reading (talk) 10:11, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

If the image you want to replace is the infobox logo, it is easier: Tag it with {{non-free logo}} and use {{logo fur}} to provide a non-free use rationale. —teb728 t c 11:25, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

I reverted your change to the article for now, as the filename you added does not exist and it caused a redlink. The simplest way is to upload it as a new version over the current logo. This image seems to be what you want, but the tagline needs to be removed. I will take care of it later today. Great Yarmouth Town FC

Re: Great Yarmouth Town FC Strip colours: the all-blue strip has been replaced by all-pink. See club website www.pitchero.com/clubs/greatyarmouthtown I have not been able to find how to change it. Editing sockpuppet archive

How would I go about adding confirmed sockpuppets to a user's SPI archive, so as to include ref(s) to the original investigation(s)? The entries on the SPI archive page do not have refs to the original investigations, and I am leery as an IP of copying other users' comments wholesale. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 13:21, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

I searched the indef-banned user's name as linked to other pages. I found an AN/I notice with Checkuser of both an account sock and an IP sock dated a day after the ban. Neither the account nor the IP have been added to the user's SPI archive. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 14:20, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Memorials

Hi folks there is a disagreement at Talk:Battle of Lima Site 85/GA1 over what is a memorial. I am doing the Good Article review and suggest listing the names of 12 men killed in the battle in the article is a memorial. It also only lists the casualties of one nation not both of them involved. Another editor suggests otherwise, any guidance or advice welcome.Jim Sweeney (talk) 17:04, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Front Cover of Vintage Book

I have a photo of the front cover of a soft cover children's book from the 1960's, that is no longer in print, that I would like to ad to a Wikipedia page describing the entire series of books published at that time. The existing Wikipedia page displays a listing of the titles of the various books in the series, but does not depict an example of any of the books. In 1977, the publishing company shut down and its assets were sold (to Kent State University) which would likely have included any copyrights. Can I upload a photo of this book's cover since the article pertains to this defunct series that is no longer available other than from used book dealers? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Winnipegflatlander (talk • contribs) 18:23, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

You will have to upload it under the non-free use criteria. So it will need a non-free use rationale using the {{Non-free use rationale}} template, and the {{Non-free book cover}} template on the image information page. – ukexpat (talk) 19:34, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, it's unlikely to be acceptable use. Non-free images of book covers cannot be used in a plain list article, because the content of the article does not describe the specific book. I'm guessing from your edits you mean How and Why Wonder Books - which is just such a list, without details. As the NFC policy says, we can only use Cover art from various items, for identification only in the context of critical commentary of that item (not for identification without critical commentary). IF the specific book met the notability guidelines (which means, if there were several appropriate references), then we could have an article about that specific book, and the cover image could be used there. Alternatively, it might be possible to add details about the book to the list article, and thus have a claim to fair use of the non-free image.

For example, List of works of William Gibson does not have any cover images, because it does not have details about the specific books; whereas e.g. "Burning Chrome" does have a cover image under a non-free licence, File:Burning chrome.JPG.  Chzz  ►  01:00, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Renaming a page

You have done it correctly, asked for a requested move at Talk:ALDO_Groupe#Requested move. The only thing you need to do is edit what you put up. You need to replace New name with the actual name you would like the article to be named and then replace the sentence and explain why the article should be renamed. Suppressing t:respell

I wondered if it is possible, perhaps by some short lines in my /monobook.css or .js, to suppress the template {{respell}}. Although I recognise that it may be helpful to non-IPA readers, I don't want to see it as I do read IPA and would prefer to see only that.

At this point you would need to loop through every span on every article and look at the title attribute for "English pronunciation respelling" with JavaScript. I would suggest opening an edit request at the template talk page for the addition of an id attribute or an additional class so you can suppress it directly from your CSS. — Bility (talk) 00:20, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
