Taxanomy of the domestic cat

Greetings ZooPro. I am Shadow Android. For a long time, I thought the domestic cat is Felis Sylvestris, yet on the page Cat, it is listed as Felis catus. Since I read your profile, you seem to know a lot about animals. Could you clearify this Taxanomy mistery for me? Thank you.

"Brilliant assessor"

I'm not that (as you claimed at User talk:Belugaboy535136#WikiProject Mammals). I recently forgot about the "start" class for a bit, and assessed a bunch of articles as stub or c. Here's a question: should the Template:Mammal doc page make a note about preferring the Template:Rodent etc. rather than the parameters in that template? I'll mostly be assessing rodent pages, and also browsing for important pages needing assessment (musk-ox was one.) —innotata (TalkContribs) 20:42, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Cetaceans

Hello, ZooPro! This is Belugaboy535136, again. As you know, I am a member of WikiProject Cetaceans. I noticed at the bottom of my userpage, there was no CATEGORY:WikiPROJECT CETACEANS MEMBERS as there were for mammals and zoo. And I searched "Category:WikiProject Cetaceans Members" or whatever it said, and hit search, and there was no results found. If you could get this page made ASAP, I would be much grateful of you. Warm regards, Belugaboy535136 (talk) 13:44, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Caspian tiger

If that is the case, then the articles on Gibraltar monkeys and black panthers should get their own taxboxes. They dont, because the former is simply a population of an animal that already has a taxbox describing it, and the latter is simply a colour variant. Colour and population variations (unless recognised as distinct taxons) do not merit taxboxes.Mariomassone (talk) 02:05, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fine, I shall rephrase it as "melanistic leopard". Taxboxes should be reserved for distinct taxons. Subspecies should be the minimum requirement. Colour variations or populations seperated by purely "political" boundraries do not fit that.Mariomassone (talk) 02:18, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

None in particular. I'm satisfied with the current policy, though if your appeal to the administrators works, I won't have a problem with it.Mariomassone (talk) 10:49, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:Wes Mannion with Tiger.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Wes Mannion with Tiger.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. FASTILYsock(TALK) 04:38, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think either you or User:Swift said that it hasn't been much work to clean up after Belugaboy535136. I've been doing just that and I rather disagree. I think a block is in order, given that about 20 pages have had there IUCN status changed incorrectly (Gelada and Ringed Seal among them). Add that to all the pages requiring cleanup. —innotata (TalkContribs) 15:58, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Have you also noticed the rather more harmless way he's been copying other people's signatures, and changing them almost every time he makes a comment. This is rather in line with his "attitude". —innotata (TalkContribs) 16:01, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

File source problem with File:Wildlife Warriors Logo2.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Wildlife Warriors Logo2.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 07:45, 9 January 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 07:45, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy decline response

excuse me? I've had speedy declines I disagreed with; it comes with the territory. But Donington was pretty clearly wrong, looking at the assertion, books, and inward links (and - hey, I missed that too - an obituary in an academic journal). PS archiving comments that quickly is not ideal, but some people do it; but archiving your own reply so quickly? Odd. Especially in view of the Editor Review; adminship is partly about being right, but a lot about being open-minded and open to feedback. Rd232 talk 13:50, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey, I was just thinking that we might like to have a bulletin board for WP:ZOO and WP:MAMMAL. That way, members can watchlist it, and we can make announcements. The Arbiter 17:58, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Do you know much about bot development? Anyway, I'll go ahead with the bulletin board. I was also thinking, don't we also need a message template, to send to people in the project? The Arbiter 16:32, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I know nothing about bot development so i agree 100% with you bulletin board idea, ill leave it all in your very capable hands and if you want anything done let me know. ZooPro 21:50, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
WP:ZOO's board is here, and WP:MAMMAL's is here. If you think it's okay, we just need to put a link to the Bulletin Board on the main pages and the navigation boxes on the side. Also, we need to send a notice to the project members to have them watchlist the boards. The Arbiter 01:23, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I do not want to deminish your hopes and effort however i must remind you that individual animals on there own are not notable and therefore do not require an article for themselves. I would encourage you to discover a Beluga that is notable and newsworthy and attempt to expand or create that article however at this stage i would not consider Kayavak to be notable enough for wikipedia. ZooPro 21:52, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Kayavak was almost deleted although her notability did shine through in the end. You see, she is the only orphaned beluga in the world, and she survived, so generally, she is notable. Sorry for the confusion. Muchas gracias, Belugaboy535136 talk 20:51, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, actually, I was looking at my watchlist when he got blocked... I was like woah... But yeah, I'm kinda irked that another member of Wikiproject Cats has been lost. Brambleclawx 21:54, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Actually shocking was the unmasking of Dr.Szląchedzki (talk · contribs) as a sock. I thought he was going to be an admin for sure! —innotata (TalkContribs) 22:58, 20 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Things to be done

I'll keep assessing the Zoo articles...at the same time, could you send a notice to each WP:MAMMAL member and WP:ZOO member to alert them of the new bulletin board? Thanks! The Arbiter 02:35, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Will do. ZooPro 02:53, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
One thing you could put on the Zoo bulletin board is an invite to the collaboration project. The Arbiter 03:07, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Check my talk page in about 3 mins for the draft and give me feedback and correct any issues. ZooPro 03:09, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Looks fine now...hahaha. We need one for mammals, too. I'll deliver the message to the Zoo participants. Is there any way to see who has watchlisted a certain page? The Arbiter 16:24, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've moved it to here. I'll notify members... The Arbiter 16:31, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Zoo Important Notice

Hehe. The Arbiter 16:40, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks ZooPro and The Arbiter for the Notice hahaha. ZooPro 23:25, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
We'll need one for mammals, too. The Arbiter 02:24, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've put the mammals one here. Could you notify the members? The Arbiter 02:48, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bulletin Board...

I have made the first announcement to the Zoo one! The Arbiter 02:45, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Maybe i should take our advice and add the page to my watchlist. ZooPro 02:51, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Great about time we get on top of that. ZooPro 02:51, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Now we’ll see what level of involvement other members will help with…we still need a way to recruit more members. The Arbiter 03:08, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I put in a semi-protect request that has just gone through. In hindsight I should have done that the first time we caught the IPs fabricating 'cites'... I'll be interested to see what they come up with next. --GenericBob (talk) 13:30, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Zoo Project Elections

I followed instructions, but the format used doesn't seem to allow for comments to wrap. I'm still newbie enough not to understand why you didn't use a standard list here. Or is this just trying to tell me that I'm too verbose?Donlammers (talk) 13:57, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fixed was just a minor spacing issue something i didnt forsee. ZooPro 21:45, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Just out of curiosity, are there any concerns you have about any of my actions as a co-coordinator? If there ever are any, please please please tell me. I hope you have noticed that I don't really ever get angry. :) Anything you need to tell me will be taken well, and is important to me. The Arbiter 01:13, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Bahahaha na if i had any concerns i would let you know dont worry, id make it known loud and clear. I just felt it was time we made sure other editors were happy with our performance, we are after all the contact points for the project. Keeps everying above board and ensures that everyone gets a say on how things are "run". ZooPro 02:39, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hehe ok. I am afraid, however, that maybe no one (besides, you, me, and Donlammers) works on WP:ZOO anymore. I don't get why some obscure WikiProjects get a lot of members, but we only get a handful. These are ZOOS! A major part of every big city. I just don't get why we don't have a ton of members... The Arbiter 02:44, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

We need a mass advertising campaign, i have been thinking for some to write something into the Talk Page template asking members to join, i may get onto this sooner rather then later. ZooPro 02:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Do you mind running together? For the coordinator position, i mean. Donlammers nominated us together...I like it that way, how about you? The Arbiter 02:51, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Does not bother me one little bit, i very much enjoy working with you. ZooPro 02:53, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

The only thing that bothers me about your leadership is that you need to learn to spell. The evil laugh is spelled with a "w", as in "Bwahahahahahaha!" ;-) Donlammers (talk) 03:00, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Here is a barnstar for you:

  What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar
I award this barnstar to ZooPro for arranging a confirmation page for the WikiProject Animals directory, which hopefully will freshen the activity statistics for the project pages. Well done and best regards, --ZooFari 04:53, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks ZooFari, means alot. ZooPro 05:09, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Is ZooFari interested in joining WP:ZOO? From his username, I thought he just might be interested. :) The Arbiter 01:55, 28 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Active project?

What is the purpose of the Project activity? i.e. what happens if I decalare a project not active? What is the conditions of a project beeing active? WP:SHARKS is not very organised and there are very few members that are activly updated pages, but the talk page is a good place for people to ask questions and generally discuss topics and the assessment is useful at least for me. I use it to find pages to update when I actually have time (which is not often lately). Is there a discussion about this? I could not find it? --Stefan talk 05:41, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

The purpose of the activity status is not only to update the WikiProject database but to also assist editors in there location of active Animal related projects to join.

Although opinions differ, a WikiProject is likely to be considered inactive if any of the following conditions are met:

  • A completely empty list of participants.
  • A list of participants that has not grown beyond the initial 1 (or 2 or 3) founders in many months, unless clearly constructive work is being done despite the tiny membership (and in such a case, a merger with a cognizable "parent" project is strongly recommended).
  • No changes to the WikiProject's pages (including any associated talk pages) for at least 3 months. Bot link/typo corrections and other similar minor activity are not counted as "changes".
  • There is no or very little evidence that the project is doing signficant work in the area for which it was established, the point above notwithstanding. It is notable by way of analogy that the Wikipedia Administrators' noticeboard and Miscellany for deletion generally interpret a user's pattern of doing nothing but fiddling with their own user page for a long period of time as evidence that the user will not be a constructive editor, resulting in the user page being deleted. A WikiProject that does nothing but work on itself for months is evidence of a similar pattern of thumb-twiddling.

If even a single editor is working on WikiProject sharks then it would be considered an active or semi active Project.

There is no discussion about the activity status of Projects this is merely an "administrative" action to determine the status of each project under WikiProject Animals and assess its viability into the future. If it is found that a number of projects are inactive then it will go to a discussion of possible merge's between projects in order to pool resources and members. Hope this helps. ZooPro 07:40, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

For your info i have marked the shark project as active, looking at the talk page as there has been recent discussions this would be considered as an Active Project. ZooPro 07:50, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
ZooPro: I left a message for you about this over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fishes#Important WikiProject Notice. Note that my message there partly is meant to be humoristic.
But really, was this discussed anywhere before you went around templating a lot of projects? And what does the other columns over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Animals/Directory mean? You should add some explanation on that page telling what it is and what the columns mean and under what criteria each column should get which status.
--David Göthberg (talk) 14:09, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
This is a simple administrative action that has no need or usage to be discussed, If in fact the project was active then it would be assumed someone would within a week notice the "notice" and change the status, Only projects that fall under WikiProject Animals have been tagged with this notice (some 20 odd).
The Directory listing is a direct copy of the main listing at WikiProject Councils WP:PROJDIR/S, this information needs to be udated at least every year and has not been done so for some time.
It is not a new system and has infact been here for aslong as the WikiProject Council. Each wikiproject has departments within that project such as assessment, if the projects does have an assessment or collaberation department it is stated on the list for easy location by editors sadly though as each WikiProject changes members this information is lost and people are unaware of the existance of certian aspects of the WIkiProjects for more information on the indivudual columns go to here, this is an attempt of sorts to ensure we have the most up to date information avaliable to everyone. There is a notice on the WikiProject Council talk page in regards to this action and if anyone wants to start a discussion about it (not that i forsee any real need for a discussion) then we shall deal with it there. I am struggling to understand what some editors are having a problem with. This action has been done many times before and only benifits the project. ZooPro 22:08, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the explanation, suggest you put it on the page or at least the talk page. --Stefan talk 01:06, 28 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Updating ineffective

Hi,

Updating WikiProject Lepidoptera's status for active = yes oin wikitext still shows the WikiProkect as inactive on display. Why is this so?

AshLin (talk) 07:14, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just so you know, for most of the late morning and afternoon I will be gone (Shedd Aquarium to see the new baby beluga, woo hoo!!), so I will not be much active during approx. 10 AM CST-5 PM CST. I don't know what time that is down in Oz. Regards, Belugaboy535136 contribs 12:55, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Anti-Vandalism/Rollback

Hello, ZooPro. You have new messages at Armoreno10's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

I'm a little worried...

You know, the fact that we have had only 3 votes on the selection page means to me that... People on WP:ZOO must not be active, since they didn't see the notice...which means that they didn't watchlist the bulletin board...which means they may not have seen the notice. What should we do? The Arbiter 18:02, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, it worries me, too. WP Zoo is one of the more 49% idle and 51% active projects. As you stated, these are ZOOS!! Belugaboy535136 contribs 22:52, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sorry...what? Never mind, I get it now. :) The Arbiter 22:59, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
