Vietnam military questions

I'm working on the History of rail transport in Vietnam and have a question for you about the wartime period in Vietnam. Off the top of your head, can you think of any particular major operations that involved bombing (or otherwise destroying) rail infrastructure in the South or North? This could be either during WWII, First Indochina War, Vietnam War, Sino-Vietnamese War, whatever—you can have a look in the sandbox to see some references that I've stuck in there so far. --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 19:10, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, the VC ambushed things that were travelling on highways and waterways so I'd be surprised if they didn't ambush railways. The same for the 19th century guys like Truong Dinh and Phan Dinh Phung, if railways were around in those days, or other 20th guys although not in the Yen Bai mutiny. In 1945-54 the CIA and Lucien Conein and Edward Lansdale did try to sabotage communist railways including by polluting the fuel and blowing the odd thing up. I can't remember what was in Operation Linebacker I and Operation Linebacker II, Operation Rolling Thunder (a-class) but it may have stuff. Yup, I knew about Linebacker and Rolling Thunder; there were plenty of railroads getting bombed in each of those. Truong Dinh was too early for railways; Phan Dinh Phung was still alive when the first railways were being pioneered, but it seems as though he wasn't in the right place to attack them. Hello. In April you added a citation to a book from the "Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases" series published by Icon Group International to this article to reference text about his gravesite. Unfortunately, Icon Group International is not a reliable source - their books are computer-generated, with most of the text copied from Wikipedia (most entries have [WP] by them to indicate this, see e.g. [1]). I've only removed the reference, not the text it was referencing. The actual report reference is here:[ http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=yUwAOwAACAAJ], but the text isn't online. This newsletter might be a useful reference:[2]. I'm removing a lot of similar references as they are circular references; many other editors have also been duped by these sources. Despite giving an appearance of reliability, the name "Webster's" has been public domain since the late 19th century. You have helped me with incidents of racism in the past, so I figured it would be easiest to report this to you.

Ecko1o1 left this racist message on my talk page [3]. Can some disciplinary action be taken against this user. He has tried to make some racist edits to Asian American in the past (this is the most recent one [4]). I went to Elockid for help, but because of their involvement they are powerless (see [5]). Harveys

Have you given up of cricket FACs? :) I'm sure there are more 1948 articles out there somewhere! I'm more or less back properly now after a few housing hiccups. I noticed there are a few of your Harvey articles at GA at the moment. I can review them if you've no problem with me doing it; I've nothing at review at the moment as I'm still slogging away at the never ending Hutton article. I haven't given up, the main problem is that since January they changed the rules so that you can only have one article in the queue, and as my articles consistently 3.5 weeks at least for 28 of the last 30 FACs, it's slow. I also tried to break up the order with some swimming articles that were just waiting there, as it is claimed that people like reviewing variation articles, but Neil Brooks took 2.5 weeks (which I suspect was because he was famous for being a drunk and a wild guy instead of because it was a new topic), but the next, Peter Evans (swimmer) took 4 weeks. The thing is nowadays if your WikiProject doesn't turn up or a lot of the FAC regulars like your work then you sit there unattended :(. Giants2008 reviews all the sport ones, but you need at least three supports and that means waiting a long time for a random person in the case of swimming and cricket articles. I pop into most sports articles but the other sports guys from other sports don't review and the FAC inner circle don't like sport (or Vietnamese history) (but quite a few other regulars consistently have 7-14 day FACs due to fast servicing of one another) (there are also claims of karma by the FAC coord, but Hamiltonstone does a lot and always waits 28 days although the article doesn't need major work, while others get the express queue even though they don't review much). So if you want the cricket FACs to start rolling, you'll have to have a look at Mark Kerry. Feel free to review the Harveys. I have a personal policy of not reviewing GACs from projects I'm in except to fail them, because I don't want the stigma to be attached to the article and the author that I cheated for them or something, but in the case of cricket and the others we've been raising content points that outsiders can't or won't, whereas some other wikiprojects (usually ethnic/national ones) have 100% one-line supports for all their FACs in spite of bad, home-made POV sources and the like. OK, there's gotta be a better way of doing this.

There are countless articles that you've edited that have empty ref tags (Tags which are formatted REF NAME=text, yet have no text within the tag). When I remove the empty ref tags, you simply revert my edit, putting them back without fixing the problem. This causes numerous reference errors which results in big bold red text at the bottom of every page you do this on.

There has to be a better way to fix these reference errors without having you continuously revert these edits. Should I instead add something to these empty ref tags? Such as "MISSING REFERENCE"? This way an error will still show so that you may fix it, but it won't flag all over the place for having incorrect ref formatting.

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody! Stats If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.
