Requested photograph categories

Thanks for creating the category for requested photographs of Southland. I hope to be able to get out and about with a camera at some point over the next few months and the category makes a convenient "shopping list". Daveosaurus (talk) 11:18, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Welcome, yes the region list is more practical than national. Also there is a partial map on the category page. XLerate (talk) 22:24, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks from me too - I'll be travelling from Dunedin to Manapouri and up to Central Otago next week, and this has given me a few places to try to take photos of. BTW, it may be worth adding some of the one is "photos required of New Zealanders" to the region categories, too... quite a few of those people are specifically associated with particular parts of the country. Grutness...wha? 00:17, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Also welcome, but I think most of the credit for Otago is with you! Agree with adding region to New Zealanders, may take a look at this in the next few days. Hope the weather is good for your trip, maybe some photo opportunies of State Highways also. XLerate (talk) 03:43, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, inasmuch as I made that category and hunted out the most obvious ones for it, perhaps, but that was just one category - you sorted the other 15 or however many it is... lots more work than I did. Good point about the highways, BTW. Grutness...wha? 05:47, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Bot

According to your bot, the following are of 'low' importance:

Possibly some tweaking is in order? Personally I think all governments should be at least mid importance. --Helenalex (talk) 04:09, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Tapu Te Ranga Marae is the largest recycled building in the southern hemisphere, and the first to have a whare decorated by a female maori artist, Robyn Kahukiwa, possibly not of 'low importance' at all... Paul Moss (talk) 09:54, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback, in response to both:

  1. I discussed the method for estimating article importance in detail at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_New_Zealand/Assessment#Automatic_tagging prior to the bot run. There are now over 16k articles in WPNZ, up from 6k before the bot run.
  2. All articles in Category:Governments of New Zealand are now at least mid, Tapu Te Ranga Marae is now mid, Waitangi Day is now high
  3. I looked into Waitangi Day, it appears my spreadsheet hadn't finished recalculating the importance before I used it. Forcing recalculation I found around 900 articles rated as low when they ought to have been higher. I've run the bot again to rectify this.
  4. Please go ahead and change any individuals you don't agree with. If there's a group or category to change, like the NZ governments, please let me know and I'll take a look at it. Ditto any obvious cases like Waitangi Day.

RCG Report

The RCG report on Meridian was inflamatory, ill informed, innaccruate and conclusions were drawn without accessing the financial information necessary to draw such conclusions.

Their "Retail Examiner" publication states that information contained within is "for guidance only" thus they acknowledge that its content should not be deemed factual. Wikipedia entries should be based on fact, not ill informed opinion.

msg to y23

Hi Y23, I want to check if you've read WP:LINKSPAM. Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. XLerate (talk) 22:51, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

I know that. I link to my photo gallery pages where appropriate. I.e. where I point people to the origin of a donated photo and/or point to galleries that deal with the subject and provide visual insights. I know what spam is, but thanks for your concern.

I see you have a few good photos online, as well. Y23 (talk) 00:57, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. The appropriate place for the link to the source is on the File page, not within the article itself. Some additional suggestions I can make are:
  1. Uploading files to Commons is better, because they can then be used in other projects (such as the German Wikipedia)
  2. Highest resolution / high quality compression (e.g. 95%) is best
XLerate (talk) 04:47, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Xlerate said: The appropriate place for the link to the source is on the File page Y23 says: OK, fine, understood! -- For example: File:Sex-magazines--www.y23.com--n20080428_n20050306_015806.JPG --- I cannot add the link to my source page because www-2.net is still blocked. What is trivial?

I'm not sure how many of these Auckland City offices are actually operated by the airlines in question and how many are operated by independent travel agents. I notice several airlines that have no operations in New Zealand on that list, and I wonder how many of them really have offices in New Zealand. However the two I added, Aircalin and Air New Zealand, do operate services to Auckland; also those particular listings are operated by the airlines in question. Usually if the address of that listing belongs only to that airline, the airline operates it - but if multiple airlines "share" an address often it's a travel agent representing them.

I may look at the following and see if the offices they have are actually operated by the airline, or if it's someone else:

  • KLM (listed twice): Level 12, 44 Wellesley St PO Box 5817 Auckland Central Auckland and 16 Waverley St Auckland Central PO Box 5817 Auckland
  • Air France: Level 12, 44 Wellesley St PO Box 5817 Auckland
  • Air France-KLM: Holding company, no address listed
  • American Airlines: Ground Floor, Qantas House 191 Queen St Auckland Central Auckland Call Free <-- Qantas House is a big hint
  • Bangkok Airways: Level 14, 120 Albert St Auckland
  • Delta Air Lines: Level 9, 52 Swanson St Auckland Central Auckland
  • Garuda Indonesia: Level 10, 120 Albert St Auckland Central Auckland
  • Hawaiian Airlines: Level 9, 52 Swanson St Auckland Central Auckland
  • Japan Airlines: 12th Floor, 120 Albert St Auckland
  • South African Airways: Level 9, 52 Swanson St Auckland Central Auckland

Listings that are not airlines:

  • Aviation & Tourism Intl
  • FCm Travel Solutions
  • Flight Centre (Travel agent, 25 listings)

Also Air New Zealand Holidays Stores has three listings (and of course Air NZ's HQ is in Auckland, so) - Thai Airways has two listings.

Helilink is a downtown helicopter company. HELiPRO Helicopters, Gliding New Zealand, and Nelson Aviation College Ltd don't seem to be commercial airlines. The 4th page is just a bunch of travel agents or other non-notable listings with nothing to do with airlines.

That's why I don't use phonebooks as sources for listing locations.

Change The Importance

Motorway Patrol is an internationally successful television programme and is therfore an article of medium importance as it is screened at primetime slots on major channels of both Australia and New Zealand. It even screens in the United Kingdom. It is recommended that you change the importance of the Motorway Patrol article to a higher rating --Lionmadness (talk) 01:54, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Please refer "Bot" discussion above, and go ahead and change the importance of any articles you disagree with. Looking at Motorway Patrol view stats (2,048 hits for the year) the result is as expected, the mid cutoff was approx 3,000. XLerate (talk) 03:49, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

I didn't closed the discussion, so I didn't looked much at the debate, only at the closing remark which was delete,. I am not going through them again, which is not really possible anyway since I used the "whatlinkshere" for the list. I am actualy more inclined to nominate {{Future sports venue}} for deletion. What an utterly pointless template. Garion96 (talk) 18:19, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

No content in Category:Law firms established in 1906

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Law firms established in 1906, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Law firms established in 1906 has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Law firms established in 1906, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Otago NORML page image

Hi There, the image that you have reverted on the Otago NORML page is incorrect. It looks like there has already been a discussion about this so I am unsure why you changed it back? Especially considering that the version with the University colours is also used on the group's website now, which seems to be the source of the original conflict. Could you please revert the image to the previous one with the blue and gold colours? Cheers 139.80.33.95 (talk) 02:29, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Hello again, if it survives to the end of the week then no problem, I'll update it to the new one on the website main page. The green logo was present when the change was made, as the comment said there was nothing to verify the university colours are the regular logo. By the way, the new logo is a whopping 7.6 MB, you probably want to look at this right away, I can get an identical one at 22.9 kB. XLerate (talk) 03:20, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

btw: Just to clear up a couple of details. I understand that you are a good editor and that you meant well. But frankly the entire logo thing violates WP:V because it is a self-published source and not a third-party WP:RS and the whole article smacks of WP:NOR. I also understand that there may be an issue with WP:SPA here also, that's for the admins/stewards to deal with. I further understand that you may feel I'm helping "the bad guy" but I'm not, I'm merely hoping to resolve what we had previously agreed to. I also never accused you of being a vandal. I feel that bth of you may have an issue with WP:COI but I'm also not concerning myself with that either. Personally, I think that the logo should be removed full-stop, but that's just a personal opinion. As for copyright, if we get a request from the university, we'll deal with it. (I'm off to bed now, talk to you both tomorrow) :-) fr33kman -s- 06:58, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi XLerate, could you review the new information on my talk page and comment on it. I think that the anon has established his case at this point but have asked him to do some editing to the article to insert that proof. Tagging cats by bot

Hi, thanks for offering to help out with your bot. There seems to be plenty left to do, and I had been wondering about whether it could be semi-automated. What I think I want to do now is get a list of subcategories (at whatever depth) of Category:New Zealand whose talk pages are not tagged with {{WPNZ}}, so I can then go through it and decide which ones need to be tagged. (So far I have been a bit more inclusive than you said you were in December - e.g. including all expats or people of NZ ancestry, but still not things like Niuean topics.) Supposedly this tool can help me with the first part, but I haven't got it to work yet. If I do get a list together, could you tag them automatically? (And if so, what format would you like the list to be in?) -- Avenue (talk) 23:47, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

AWB screenshot
Ok, for compiling the lists I used AutoWikiBrowser's List comparer function. The screenshot to the right is an example, the righthand column shows 98 articles under Category:Buildings and structures in New Zealand without the WPNZ tag.
There were some tricks, for example Category:Realm of New Zealand has circular subcategories (Realm -> NZ -> Govt -> Realm -> ... ad infinitum), maybe this is tripping up the catmembers tool. Category:National Rugby League was another, some exclusively Australian topics.
Yes I can tag automatically, for the list format, plain text list of article names is fine, you could e-mail it to me or put it on an autotagging subpage at Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand/Assessment. I'd prefer one giant list rather than piecemeal :-) XLerate (talk) 01:09, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

It would be very interesting to see whether you were interested in a few other projects as well SatuSuro 01:20, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

To do the tagging I used the Kingbotk Plugin for AutoWikiBrowser, per that page it's been utilised for several other projects as well. If there is specific project(s) you'd like to tag I may be able to assist, alternatively any approved/established editor can use AWB/Kingbotk, the configuration is via a GUI, and has both manual and bot modes. Question about WP:COP#Ordering_names_in_a_category using AWB)

I've noticed your 28 June 2009 change to the article on Lisa Lavie, with the edit summary referring to "WP:COP#Ordering_names_in_a_category using AWB" which seems like it should constitute a minor edit. However, when using the "Compare selected versions" function, a massive number of changes were indicated, which is difficult for reviewers to check over for correctness. . . . Question: (To help with my review process) can you tell me whether or not you made any changes that affected the content and meaning of the article? OK to reply or explain here, on your user talk page, where I'll check back. Thanks. RCraig09 (talk) 14:30, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

No the article wording and sentences ought to be identical, the changes are less than the diff suggests. AWB has a number of automatic tidying-up routines, for that article it's removed piped links matching the target name (e.g. [[Record label|record label]] -> [[record label]]), removed unneccessary line breaks <br />, converted two dashes to an em dash, etc. In addition to the defaultsort, I converted the large list of external links into a bulleted list, and removed excess spaces, which has caused some paragraphs to be misaligned in the diff. Many thanks for the additional categories for Kosuke Koyama

Many thanks for being kind enough to add some extra categories to the article on the Japanse theologian Kosuke Koyama. I hope that these will mean that more people will be likely to read the article. Again, many thanks, ACEOREVIVED (talk) 20:09, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Spylaw ST sign

Hi XLerate, Thanks for moving my photo onto commons! Call me ignorant but I am not sure how to replace it onto the Dunedin page, would you mind doing it for me? I am quite proud of it and was happy with its place on Dunedin'd article, Thanks, kiwiteen123 (talk) 08:01, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Kiwiteen123, you're welcome. I renamed the file to File:Spylaw Street sign, Dunedin, New Zealand.JPG to fix a typo, otherwise adding it is the same. I like the photo, a nice symmetry with the power lines, but as an everyday item I feel it is of limited value in that context, for comparison Baldwin St and the train station are unique, so I'm not so keen to add it back to the Dunedin article. XLerate (talk) 09:43, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick reply! I have always been a fan of street signs particularly our's (Dunedin's) but obviously I am unique! :) I will preserve it on my userspace instead! kiwiteen123 (talk) 09:46, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Otago University Clocktower complex map

Dear XLerate,

I like your additions to the article on the Otago University Clocktower complex. The map is particularly useful and you've added some photos as well. It would be good to indicate the line of Castle Street on the map if that is possible, but your illustrations make the words much more intelligible.

Peter Entwisle

Hi Peter, thanks, I'd hoped you'd be happy with them. I was aiming for one photo of each building, if you feel there's too many please feel free to cull a few. The map has been updated to include Castle Street, using the checkered pattern as I understand it's primarily pedestrian / not a public road. XLerate (talk) 07:49, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

I don't feel there are too many images. It's good to have one photo of each building, although this can become a bit four square. (The principle is good but are they the best possible pictures?) I haven't seen your updated map but it would be really good to indicate the line of Castle Street.

Peter Entwisle

Certainly room for improvement with some, the staff club one for example. I picked what I thought were the best ones, and there are some more at Commons:Category:University of Otago. For an idea of best possible there are some professional photos here. The updated map displays ok for me, you may need to do a hard refresh (CTRL+F5). XLerate (talk) 00:41, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Peter and XLerate - just a little note about the map - the gap between Marama Hall and the old Geology Building looks far too big to me - I'm sure they're closer than the map suggests. Also, though The sections of Leith Street south of St David's Street and close to Union Street are navigable by traffic, they're both University-only roads these days. Grutness...wha? 09:34, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Grutness, a new version has been uploaded:
  1. gap looks to be about 22m, vs 14m for the short side of Marama Hall. There's an aerial photo at davidwallphoto, and it's in Google Street View, surprised the Google car went in there!
  2. pedestrian area on Leith between St David and Union has been shortened. A gap appears on NZTopoOnline, and I believe there's a removable barrier physically preventing through traffic. GSV has both ends but not completely clear.
  3. Leith south of Union, ok appears as a road on NZTopoOnline, and there's a 10km/h sign visible in GSV
XLerate (talk) 10:58, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough - must just be my memory playing tricks, or somehow it looks different on the ground (perhaps because of the fence and garden area between Marama Hall and the quad) Grutness...wha? 18:37, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, the gap was trimmed per your suggestion, was originally ~28m. XLerate (talk) 00:40, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Dear XLerate and Grutness,

This is all very good. The changes are enhancing.

Grutness is quite right that the university now owns those bits of Leith Street and also Castle Street. But what's more important is that they are part of Kettle's original plan. The university may wish to de-emphasise that - in the past it did - but they are literally the parameters of the complex and part of the buildings' original conception. To fully appreciate the group one needs to know where they were.

It's great to have them back - if only on a map.

Regards,

Peter Entwisle

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period. Additionally, users who perform several reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. When in dispute with another editor you should first try to discuss controversial changes to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. Should that prove unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection. Unreferenced BLPs

Hello XLerate! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 944 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Deprodding

Thanks for deprodding Donogh Rees. You may have missed it, but there has been major drama involving admins mass deleting old unsourced BLPs on sight, including an ArbCom case that commended them for doing it. In light of this it is unwise to deprod an unsourced BLP without adding sources (though it is still currently within policy). Policy may change on this, see WT:PROD, and even in the absence of a change in policy some admins may still delete them without discussion. I've sourced this article, but in future it'd be good if you could do that when deprodding. Thanks. Fences&Windows 17:17, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for the note, I'll deprod BLPs only when adding references. Normally I would add a few references but in that case all the articles appeared to be trivial mentions, half a sentence saying "Rees who played X in Y". XLerate (talk) 05:26, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Aramoana massacre infobox picture

Hi there, XLerate. I'm actually wondering where you got that picture from the day of the Aramoana massacre (I didn't come here to growl you off for replacing my picture :P) I'd been looking for a while for suitable pictures and couldn't really find any. I know it says you got it from the Otago daily times, but was that newspaper edition online, or elsewhere? It would be an interesting article to read. Cheers. --SamB135 TalkContribs 04:17, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi SamB135, the newspaper page is on microfilm at the Dunedin City & National libraries, I created the file from the same photo in O'Brien's 22-Hours (which credits the ODT). I don't know if you can get the microfilm in Auckland via interloan.
TVNZ also have a 3 second clip immediately after that photo here (at 0:57). XLerate (talk) 09:14, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

NZ location maps

Hi XLerate - that's fine. I was hoping that someone would provide better maps eventually. The scale difference is no surprise - I made the basic map using separate NI and SI maps as a basis. The only maps I see as being a problem to convert will be the river ones (e.g., File:NZ-Waikato_R.png). As to how I am, my life's busy falling apart a bit, unfortunately - this month has probably been the worst of my life. But I don't particularly want to go into details here. Grutness...wha? 22:31, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Sam Neill

I am going to change Sam Neill's nationality. You fail to figure out that he was born in Northern Ireland and therefore the United Kingdom. Don't be stupid and reverse it back to his nationality which is British. It is obviously written on his passport as Northern Ireland/United Kingdom and therefore he is of British nationality. I do not need any proof whatsoever you can see his information on the side underneath his photo. I do not need to provide any evidence or backups to my claim. Wikipedia has the sources there already. Sam Neill is a British citizen that is all I need to say. I am not going to play stupid games about Sam Neill's nationality.Pryde 01 (talk) 03:40, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Threat

You cannot block me. Keep on making threats like that mate I'll report you too. I have not made any violation. I was simply going by the nationality of his birth. You risk damaging the credibility of abusing your so called special privilege in Wikipedia. You don't have any grounds to block me. Don't assume unless you want to start an argument. People like you have no place in Wikipedia. One request. Stop making threats and keep your comments to yourself. Don't be an idiot.Pryde 01 (talk) 06:01, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

It was a word of caution, risk was the word I used. If you feel threatened by it then the answer is to source and discuss controversial changes instead of edit warring. I don't appreciate some of the comments you've made above, as you've had a final warning for making personal attacks I have reported this at WP:ANI. XLerate (talk) 11:42, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
