Good call on the "crossword whiz" bit. I'm almost certain that's made up. Other codebreakers at Bletchley Park were recruited because of their crossword skills, perhaps that's where the anon got the idea from? — Matt Crypto 19:56, 14 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Citations edit

I don't remember for sure, but I believe the citations you mentioned to me were changed because they were somewhat incorrect. I am not the author of Before Stonewall. It is a collection of articles and was edited by Vern Bullough. Neither is it an online source, but a printed book. I have changed the citations, and hopefully they reflect how you would like them to appear. Let me know if there are any other problems. -William percy 05:06, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

/* Criticisms */ edit

it seems to me that you've rewritten the article gay agenda almost completely from the pov of gays and lesbians. If the term itself is a political tool then it's a polarized issue between two or more groups, to represent one groups pov only would be unfair to the issue itself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AndyinMN (talkcontribs) 21:27, January 21, 2006

European_Graduate_School edit

Hello - you reverted an edit [1] I made to the European Graduate School [2] entry and described this as being by a 'known vandal'. I think the edit I made was appropriate, and in context as it was a link to the staff page of a member of Faculty of the EGS, viz, Professor Chris Fynsk and to his nascent Centre, the Centre for Modern Thought which is affiliated with the EGS. I would be interested to hear why you deemed this to be vandalism and why I or my IP address is tagged as a known vandal since I have seldom edited the site and have certainly never vandalised it. Regards, Mike —Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.133.7.38 (talkcontribs) 17:20, January 28, 2006

Since you made the edit using the anonymous IP 139.133.7.37, the "known vandal" in this case is IP 139.133.7.37, which had committed countless vandalisms for which it received five warnings and was blocked once in January alone. The last edit made by this account before the European Graduate School was clear vandalism [3], as was the edit immediately after [4]. Furthermore, the article European Graduate School did not mention the Centre for Modern Thought, and the Centre for Modern Thought home page did not mention the European Graduate School. If you wish to avoid similar problems in the future, please create your own account.
Given your reply, I do not now consider the links to be vandalism, but I would say that are not sufficiently linked to the article. The School for Modern Thought link would be justified only if the School was mentioned in the article. The link to Prof Fynsk should only appear in an article about him. While several profs have articles in Wikipedia, he does not. Wuzzy 12:03, 29 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification and advice. I'll take steps to address the citation issues in due course. The IP address is a general one allocated by our web proxy (the University of Aberdeen) so the chances are the vanadalism is by students or a student. If you deem this to be a significant problem for you and can supply dates and times of incidents to web-team@abdn.ac.uk, we will investigate further, although (of course) we will be unable to prevent this happening in future due to the nature of Wikipedia. Thanks, Mike

Gay rights in Canada edit

Terminatorius blanking of IP user talk pages edit

Do you think if there is any reason why we may want to keep these warning texts? The reasons of removing them are explained in the bot page: at least after a week or about, the message may be seen by persons who have got this IP just by chance and multiple "last time" warnings feed the trolls. I thought, if the user IP is transient, all information, related to that IP is also transient. The anonymous pages without vandal warnings are ignored by this bot. Audriusa 18:29, 15 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Not all IP's are transient. Many, probably most, are consistent vandals or non-vandals. For them, warnings indicate their lack of credibility on dubious edits, and their lack of innocence (first-time vandalism is presumed to be a test). Conversely, I notice that the bot is removing notices that IP's are AOL, for which warnings are pointless, or contact information about shared IP's at schools etc, sockpuppets, etc. However, I doubt that it is up to either of us to decide whether these automated blankings are okay. Unless you can point to a policy or guideline that allows it, I suspect that it is not allowed. Wuzzy 22:09, 15 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Seems that the consensus have been reached. I have manually reverted all changes of the bot and, think, the topic can be closed. I will looks in the suggestions section to find some other idea. Audriusa 08:11, 16 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Gay rights in Nigeria edit

Hello, Wuzzy. I consulted my Spartacus International Gay Guide (2005/2006 edition) for background information on Nigeria. Perhaps you know how to include this and source it into your article:

Homosexuality in Nigeria is illegal according to paragraph 214 as well as 217 of the Nigerian penal code and can be punished by imprisonment of up to 14 years. The north of Nigeria is Islamic and extremely conservative.
Hope this helps. Regards, Gilliamjf 22:37, 26 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Images on History of gays in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust edit

The article is very crowded with images; in your current layout, the lead paragraph is squished into a tiny column barely three or four words wide while others are interspersed seemingly haphazardly. The main holocaust navigation box is buried in the middle of the article in a position that I can't see the logic behind, and the bookburning picture directly across from the library picture squishes the text in the middle of the paragraph, making for difficult reading. I shrunk the pictures and moved most of them into a single column on the right side, keeping the text together and easy to read, but you referred to my changes as "disastrous." I think the current layout has serious problems and I'm curious as to how my changes to the layout actually made anything worse. Night Gyr 17:21, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It is difficult to describe the problem that your layout caused on my IE6 on WindowsXP with a large monitor, but I'll try. Basically, it caused large blocks of blank space to appear next to several images because there was little or no text besides each image. The problems were the navigational pane, the couple, the Institute, the nightclub, and to a lesser extent the prisoner and Rohm. There was no text at all next to the nightclub and Institute; about 3/4 of the screen was blank.
In addition, I don't think that the navigation pane should be top right when there is an image that conveys what the article is about. The prisoner, the nightclub and the bookburning are what the article is about, as well as the couple and Institute that were destroyed, to contrast them with. The navigation pane is about related articles more than about this article (It mostly gives information about how to leave the article), and it is very big. If the images are allowed to grab the attention, then the person will read the article and while doing so will scroll by the navigation pane lower down in the article and, once finished reading, will be ready to use it, or the gay rights template.
Also, I think that the prisoner image needs to be prominent, or at least equal; it looks insignificant in your layout, where it is the second smallest image, so small that it loses its meaning, the pink triangle and the dignity of the person.
My layout did not cause problems on my computers, obviously. I think that we should keep the images (except maybe the doctor, who is not mentioned in the article) and keep them about the size they are now, but I think that a fix is possible that will work for both of us. It will probably require lining up photos, and avoiding having images on both margins at the same spot. One problem is that some photos are vertical and some are horizontal, so they don't line up neatly or get squished. I'll try some things, and you can tell me if it works for you. Wuzzy 19:39, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm running mozilla firefox on an iBook at 1024x768, so it's not fullscreen and the viewable area is about 800x600. I think the issue is resulting from having many images stack as the text has more room on your screen, while on mine the images make the article crowded. I shrank them because they were dominating the page, and I moved the template up because it's part of consistency for a series to have the template there and accesible on every article. The articles linked from Template:Chemical warfare vert, or template:ScientologySeries show this principal in use.
I made the images small because a reader can still click on the thumbnails if they want to see them larger. A big image can really take over the layout, and several of them will fight for it. I think that a better fix might be to divide the article into sections, with only one or two images per section. That would give a better distribution. The first and simplest fix would be to change the layout so that the lead isn't crowded by pictures on both sides, though. Night Gyr 20:50, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, I made a new layout---by accident as I thought I was working in my sandbox. It has slightly smaller pictures, with the pictures largely in chronological order. No two images should be at the same height, ie there should not be images on both margins anywhere. Because so many of the images concerned the early years, which were barely mentioned, I reordered the text, in part by merging the summary, so that it was more chronological, which put more text at the beginning. I also added new text about the early years. I hope I did not get the history wrong. The emphsis on images, chronological order and proximity of image to text means that the navigation template had to be put at the bottom, where I think it is most useful in any case. I notice that several of the articles in the template do not have the template themselves. So, there is a precedent for inconsistency. What do you think? I'm going to bed now. Categories edit

Just so you know, Wikipedia has rules against applying duplicate categories. An article or a category cannot be filed in both a parent category and a subcategory of that same parent at the same time; it can be filed only in the narrowest appropriate subcategory. Since Category:Books by Timothy Findley is already a subcategory of Category:LGBT culture in Canada by way of Category:LGBT literature in Canada, we can't directly file the plays category in more than one of those three at the same time.
