When a talk page gets realy long, it's common practice to move parts of that page into sub-pages. That makes finding more important information alot easyer. Hi. You don't need an admin to revert vandalism, you can easily do it youself :) Just click on the last version without vandalism and edit it. Don't do any changes to it, or just insert a blank line at the bottom of the page, and add an edit summary, and everything is fixed. If the work is not in the public domain, not available under fair use, or is not licensed under a usable license (see here), you will have to contact the owner. There are standard letters/email you can send. Everyone has a chance, but usually the community looks for people who have > 6 months and usually >1,500 edits (you only have 190 atm), keep trying; you'll get there one day i'm sure. Well, it's basically prohibited to remove other people's comments from a discussion page. Please don't do that. Respond if you must, or, at very most, strike out the person's comments (though this is usually frowned upon too). Also, adding yourself to a list of famous birthdays is not appropriate, and removing a link to a school site that can easily be found on google for "security reasons" is rather silly. How do you add a message to everyone talk at once?

It would be extremely difficult, long, tedious, and pointless. Although, if you have a reason, time, patience and a point, you would most likely look at AutoWikiBrowser (you need 500 mainspace edits and no vandalism etc), and making a bot [so it can run faster, and without flooding recent changes]. But it's quite pointless, and you would prolly get blocked for it, as it would most likely be seen as spam. Well to be quite honest, not in a near future I am afraid :). Being an Administrator is a lot of power, but even more responsibilities. That is why there is so few administrators in Wikipedia. You should get involved into Wikipedia fur much more time before thinking of applying for adminship. You know, you don't need to be an admin to participate to Wikipedia (I for example am not an admin and don't consider requesting adminship in a near future). Please see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. To quote from the introduction,

To use copyrighted material on Wikipedia, it is not enough that we have permission to use it on Wikipedia alone. That's because Wikipedia itself states all its material may be used by anyone, for any purpose. So we have to be sure all material is in fact licenced for that purpose, whoever provided it.

Do not ask a copyright holder for permission for the use of an image specifically on Wikipedia. If you upload an image based on special permission alone, it will be tagged with Template:Copyrighted and deleted. Generally, a requisite for an image to be on Wikipedia is that is that image can be used anywhere, in any context. If the copyright holder won't allow you to copy that image to a personal website, don't use it on Wikipedia.

However, you can get the copyright holder to change the license of that image to GFDL or CC, specifically CC-by-SA. If the license is already that, don't ask to upload it; you can without permission. (Exception: if a Creative Commons image is not allowed to be modified and then redistributed, it may not be uploaded to Wikipedia. See CC-by-ND)

You can email the holder of the copyright, however, to get them to change the license, if the current license doesn't allow use on Wikipedia, or if it is unclear. Simply emailing the copyright holder is not enough to merit use on Wikipedia. The license, and accepted uses, has to be public.

One thing to note: Suppose that an image is copyrighted, or licensed under CC-by-ND. If that image is cover art, an image of a team or corporate logo, an image of stamp or currency, promotional material, a film or television screen shot, a screenshot from software products, a painting and other work of visual art, or a publicity photo, you may be able to use it. Read WP:FU for more information, and specifically see Wikipedia:Fair use#Images.

In both cases (fair use and GFDL/CC), you must specify the license under which the copyright holder licensed the image, and the source of the image, when you upload it.

Why when I opposed Black Jack's RFA did it say that I was opposer # 19 but in the stats it still said 16/18/10 or 18 opposes?

Yes, but be a little careful if there are votes which have been excluded or shouldn't be counted for some other reason. If you look at the history of the relevant RfA, you will see people using an edit summary of 'tally'. It is often best just to update the tally when you are making some other edit, such as when you are casting your !vote - but they can be updated at any time, especially if you forgot to do it previously ;) -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 02:13, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not censored for minors. 70.39.3.136 didn't do anything wrong; he/she was just testing to see if Wikipedia really worked, and if he/she could actually edit this thing. The course of action to perform in this case might be to add {{subst:welcomeip}} to this user's user page. Or to not do anything at all. It's a template, which I personally think is a waste of time. The template code is located in here: User:Nishkid64/StatusChange2. All you do is place {{User:Nishkid64/StatusChange2|OMG}} on your userpage when your on, and {{User:Nishkid64/StatusChange2|OMG2}} when you are off. Namespaces include "User", "User_talk", "Wikipedia", "Wikipedia_talk", "Category", "Category_talk", "Image", "Image_talk", "Template", "Template_talk", "Help", "Help_talk". The default is "Main"; if you wish to link to a page in another namespace, just type the namespace and a colon. I actually thought it was allowed, because it wasn't an external link to your site or something, but to the Wikimedia Foundation. I always knew it was external, I just thought it didn't violate the rules since it was associated with Wikipedia, versus linking to your myspace or something.

Another part of the concern about too many references to edit counters might be that I have read they are a drain on the servers. It becomes too tempting for people to click on it often and do a run on your edits if it's linked every time a user signs. Newyorkbrad 22:07, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Click on "My preferences" in the line at the very top of the page. Then click on "Watchlist" and there will be a bunch of different features you can click to select. Note that if you do select "Watchlist pages I edit", the number of pages on your list will pile up pretty quickly, so once in awhile you might need to go through and de-select some when it's getting to be too many. As for the link to the edit counter, I'm not sure how strict anyone is being about the external link policy these days insofar as that specific type of link is concerned. If you're concerned you can ask at the help desk, WP:HELP, and see what they say. First of all, let's continue this discussion in one place, here. I have your page watchlisted so we don't need to keep hopping back and forth.

In the left column of the screen you have the link to "My Watchlist." If you click on that, your list will come up and it will list the changes that have been made to your watched pages in the last couple of days. (If a page has had more than one change, it will list the last one.)

For your other question, I can't really tell what is the purpose of that page you created, so it's hard to tell what would be an appropriate or an inappropriate edit to it. Beyond that, I'm editing on my computer at my office, so based on the name of that particular website I don't think I'm going to click on it.

Um, I did a little research on that website. It is definitely not something that you want listed there and I have removed it. I also think that having an editable link of "useful websites" on your page is going to be almost a vandalism magnet and you probably should remove it.

I don't use Vandal Proof or any of the other special tools, just regular manual reverting when I come across a bad edit.

I know you are starting out as an editor and looking forward to editing Wikipedia. If I could make a suggestion, you should probably spend some time now working on actual edits to the articles in the encyclopedia, which is the most important reason we are here. I'll give you my opinion for whatever it's worth. The article about the school is generally a well-written article, especially since the article is just starting. One thing I would change is the last sentence, which is probably not written from a neutral point of view and should be changed. Remember, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. A statement that might be good for school spirit at the pep rally is not the same as what an encyclopedia article about the school should say.

I don't know whether most of the article is in your own words, or if you quoted anything from sources. If you quoted anything more than a couple of sentences, make sure they are in the public domain. Otherwise there will be a copyright issue and you should rewrite anything you quoted into your own words. You should also mention in the article where you got the information from. You can do this in a "references" section at the bottom.

You should also be aware that an article about a middle school may be questioned on grounds of the notability policy. There is a constant debate on the articles for deletion pages about whether there should be an article about every middle and high school that anyone wants to write about. I think that in general such articles should be kept, but that isn't the unanimous mood of everyone on the site by a long shot, so if someone raises that issue, don't take it personally.

I'm not as sure that the redirect was useful, since I doubt there are many people, at least not many from outside the town where the school is, who would type in "Ordean" when they mean "Ordean Middle School." On the other hand, it isn't hurting anything, and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Page Moves

Do page moves count as mainspace edits?

It depends what page you are moving and to where. If you move a page from one name in mainspace to another, it will show up as an edit to each article. But if you move a page in a different space, the edits will show up in that space instead. In any event, please don't move any pages unless you are very sure and have a good reason. A lot of people have gotten criticized and created extra work for others by moving pages around just on a whim. Not only does it surprise people who were looking for the page under the old name, but it also messes up all the redirects and stuff. As you may know, Esperanza is a discontinued project within Wikipedia (the decision to discontinue it was made just a couple of days ago). The issue being discussed is that normally a Wikipedia project isn't discussed on a mainspace page (technically, there is a negative attitude toward "cross-namespace redirects") and whether that should be overruled by other factors in this instance. It was deleted as WP:CSD#G7, 'Author requests deletion'. So either another user made it by mistake and deleted it again, or an admin thought (possibly in error) that you'd asked for the deletion. When it says a user is blocked indefinetly do they mean forever?

He said,

And so I'm happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the Glory of the coming of the Lord!

So changing grammar is a good thing unless it corrupts a quote. Of course, you may know of the use of [sic] for correcting mistakes. But his use of "mine" wasn't a mistake. I think specifically Dr. King was quoting the first line of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, which in turn uses a biblical phrasing. In older usage, including that song, "mine" is used instead of "my" when the next word begins with a vowel sound, to flow more easily (sounds complicated, but we do the same thing today with "a" and "an"). There's more than one style there, so you'd have to choose one. More to the point, activity indicates are not automated; you have to change them manually whenever you log on/log off, so if you don't understand how to use the indicator there's not much point in having one. One way is to put {{user in}} in an appropriate place on your userpage, and change it to {{user out}} just before you log off (and back again just after you log on); but you should be sure that you can stick to such a system if you want to use it (for instance, this is why I don't use activity indicators). I recently got approved for VP and I clicked login and then verify and nothing happened why?

Vandalproof is not part of the core wikipedia software and beyond the scope of the {{helpme}} system. As per the message above you need to contact one of the moderators or ask on the discussion page for vandalproof. --pgk 23:07, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

As I said this is not part of the core software, and something I know little or nothing about. As the message above says, ask the person who posted it, or one of the other moderators or the discussion board. {{helpme}} is primarily for help editing wikipedia and although we try to help where we can, for more "specialist" issue you'll get a better and faster response by asking on the appropriate page. If I see one of the vandalproof moderators on IRC I'll ask them to take a look in, but I suggest you ask on the page pointed to above --pgk 23:18, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

pgk is right, but anyhow, I'm sorry I don't know what's wrong then. You may want to go to their troubleshooting/help page and see if anyone can help you there. I know other people that have problem running it. WP:AWB requires Windows .NET framework...VandalProof doesn't say it does, though. Xiner (talk, email) 23:32, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

VP is developed in VB6, not in .NET. It doesn't require anything except IE. It can work even on IE7 (tried myself) but on my pc it doesn't work, apart in a Ubuntu Virtual Machine (via Wine). Hi again, WikiMan53. I had a look at your editor review and am afraid I would have to agree with Wooty's comments regarding your removal of the redlinks at Cantons of the Maine-et-Loire department.

I think the This page in a nutshell paragraph at the top of WP:RED sums it up pretty well. The idea of redlinks is to point out words or phrases for which a corresponding article does not yet exist, but could and should be created—either by the original editor, or by another editor visiting the article. Such redlinks make it easy to create the relevant articles, by simply clicking on the redlink, which would take you directly to the "create a new article" page for the corresponding word or phrase.

The only time that redlinks would not be appropriate, is when the redlinked word or phrase is out of context with the article in which it is found, or when it points to an article that previously existed, but no longer does (because it was moved elsewhere, or deleted).

So to summarise:

• If a redlink points to an article that was deleted and there is not much chance that it could or should be re-created again, it would be okay to remove the redlink;
• If a redlink points to an article that was moved elsewhere, update the redlink so it points to the article's new location (in other words, change it from a redlink into a normal wikilink);
• If a redlinked word or phrase is out of context with the subject of the article in which it is found, remove the redlink

To explain the last point above a little more:

The redlinks in this paragraph are of no use, because it wouldn't make sense to create new articles for these redlinked words or phrases. The redlinked words and phrases are not notable enough to exist as separate articles.

Another example:

If this paragraph was found in an article about the History of South Africa, it would be inappropriate to create redlinks for George W. Bush's favorite flavor ice cream or My dog fluffy, because it has nothing to do with the subject of the article in which it is found (i.e., the history of South Africa), and is therefore out of context.
