Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, Whitelight77. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Sonny Vincent, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  (User:Wtwilson3)  — 16:21, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help request

edit

Hi folks! I am Sonny Vincent. I dont know why Wiki doesnt recognize my user name anymore ( Whitelight77 ) Also I need help to make my page more professional but at the same time having a 'voice'. My bio and story is completely true but it asks for 'verifications'. There are thousands of reviews of my albums and interviews. Can you help me by telling me what items would be best for satisfying the 'verification' requirements? I'm sure that the notice on top "Issues wit this page" looks scary to some folks and I would like to rectify the issues. I appreciate the help! Please note that I am not an internet or computer wiz!

I added the standard Wikipedia conflict of interest notice above because it contains many links you will find useful in contributing to the encyclopedia, including answers to the questions you pose in your help request. If you have further questions, please ask them here (at the bottom of the page) and I, or another editor, will return to help you more. Also, please add four tildes to the end of your comments (like this: ~~~~) so that your signature and the time of you post is added to your comment. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  (User:Wtwilson3)  — 16:27, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the advice. I looked closely again at both the guidlines and the text on the wiki page. The main thing that I saw which might seem flattering was a quote from 'Swami'. That is a documented source, not me inventing something. Anyway should I simply remove that? The rest doesnt seem to have any particular 'tone'. If that line is not where the trouble or concern is could you please help me out to find the part(s) that seem 'not fitting'. Im simply interested in having a normal wiki page that adhears to the guidlines , but Im not sure where it is wrong. I can change ot, no problem. Do I need to put in more 'sources'. I think the coilhouse article covers a lot and that is in the sources list at the bottom. And Ive asked it a few times but didnt hear anything about it, please address this questing if its ok, why is my user name not recognized by wiki. When I click my user name it goes to an area that say its not recognizable. Hey thanks a lot. I appreciate the help. Best from Sonny P.S.- Most of the content was not written by myself. In fact the original text was by someone else and I simply added to it a little bit.

Thanks for the reply. Could you be more specific? I read the rules and cant see where I am going wrong. Which types of verification do I need to post AND please can you tell me why wiki doesnt recognize my user name anymore? All what is written is true and documented in many articles and interviews. Cold you explain to me step by step how to put verifications in the text field? Sorry i coldnt figure it out from the FAQ etc. Thanks Whitelight77 (talk) 20:41, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Writing about yourself is not a good idea because it's very difficult to maintain a neutral point of view when doing so. This is more a matter of tone than of facts, and of deciding what facts to report. For example, I'm pretty sure the "eight-month term in the gray bar hotel" mentioned in your AllMusic biography refers to a prison term, and that aspect of your biography somehow isn't mentioned. Other aspects that aren't discussed in third-party sources are emphasized instead. Huon (talk) 21:46, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

You are suspected of sock puppetry, which means that someone suspects you of using multiple Wikipedia accounts for prohibited purposes. Please make yourself familiar with the notes for the suspect, then respond to the evidence at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Whitelight77. Thank you. Hi Folks! Initially my page had a notice on it the said 'This Page has Issues' , So I went into the talk and the live online talk to ask for help to correct the page. I did many edits and deleted sentences and a correction of 'tone' of writing as suggested. Then i began adding citations. One suggestion I received in here was that maybe I was too close to the subject. At that point other people began to do some edits and 'touch ups on the page¨. I do not have multiple user names or anything of the sort. I would like to add that I appreciate any kind suggestions concerning more edits for the page. My information is available all over the web. Ive simply been trying to configure the page so its done right. I'm not an arrogant person and don't want to stir up anything but a good cooperation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whitelight77 (talkcontribs) 02:23, 17 January 2015‎ (UTC)Reply

Whitelight77, let me first say that I am glad this article is being improved; when I first saw it the page was a mess, and now it's getting to being a pretty good article. I'm leaning towards withdrawing the deletion nomination and improving the article from where it is. As for the SPI - after the deletion was proposed, there were three new accounts created within two days, all of which started editing the page and commenting on the deletion discussion. Usually this implies a sockpuppet or meatpuppet. Sometimes it turns out to be a huge coincidence, but I was only following Wikipedia's procedures. If there is indeed no foul play, the investigation will determine that. Primefac (talk) 11:42, 17 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Primefac! Thanks very much for the kind words. I now knw you are only trying to get pages up to a Wikipedia standard. At first I was taking it a little bit personal, sorry. I am busy recording yet another album but take time off in the studio doing edits and trying my best to dial in the page. of course any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Maybe you can see from my efforts that I am serious and committed to making an ongoing effort to have the page better and better according to the rules and standards. Perhaps my efforts are a good sign and you would take away the deletion proposal as you said might be possible. That would be very encouraging and simply great. Thanks for writing and sorry for any misunderstandings. Best from Sonny Vincent. ---
