DYK for British Rail sandwich

Hi. British Rail sandwich appeals to my sense of humour, especially as a railfan...

I have put the article forward for the Main Page 'Did You Know' slot. See DYK – February 22 articles for the nomination. I'm not entirely happy with the hook lines I suggested, but they seemed a good starting point. Feel free to provide better alternatives if you can.

There is a process to go through, although the mechanics (if not the timing) have changed since I last did it. Essentially an article creator, or someone else (not necessarily an editor of the article) can nominate an article within five days of its creation or greater-than-five-fold expansion. (There are additional requirements regarding minimum article size and quality, and using a referenced fact for the 'hook', etc. See the DYK pages for details.) After nomination, there are editors who specialise in the DYK process who will review/refine/etc the sugggestions, selecting several batches for Main Page display every day.

The five-day limit is significant. In this case, the article was created on 22 Feb, so that is the section it is entered in, and if it is chosen it would appear (most likely) on the 28th or 29th (D'Oh! - 1st March!). Until then, feel free to suggest a new hook as 'ALT2' (preferred) or refine an existing one, unless already noted as OK (when you might as well leave it alone!) From past experience, suggestions that attract no comments are usually OK for selection, but I may have just been lucky! If you do want to make a suggestion for improvement, make sure your comments are clearly visible, since reviewers will not be watching for 'differences' between edits.

You may be interested to know that the article is currently listed at Template:Did you know/Queue/2. This means it is scheduled to appear within the next 24 hours (or else that it has already appeared and we weren't watching!) They now operate a rolling 5-queue system, and it's taking a while to work out 'what happens next'. (Viewing the history of Template:Did you know is the easiest way to see if it has appeared, since it is the actual source for the Main Page display). Anyway, the next update is due after 10:30 (UTC) so it should appear on the main page then. Look carefully though, 'cos all the others have much longer hooks -- I missed it the first time I looked! re:Ezra Klein quote on Conservapedia article

I believe Klein's quote is relevant because it provides third-party coverage on one of Conservapedia's most controversial articles. The paragraph also flows correctly because both sentences relate to religion. Artichoker^[talk] 15:10, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

I'll agree that the quote doesn't illuminate as much as I would like. However, I read the entire on the source, and couldn't find a better comment to use. Just Out, COTW does well in new decade

Howdy WikiProject Oregon folks, time again for the latest installment of As the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. Last week was one of the more successful COTWs in recent memory as we really worked hard as a community to improve Concordia University and Berry Botanic Garden. Both are now at least C class articles and nicely illustrated (thanks to Tedder, Finetooth, and Ipoellet). Plus it really was a group effort as we had five different WPORE editors work on the garden and ditto with the school, with some overlap between the two.

Oregon COTW and randomness

Portland Parks Photo Blitz!

WPORE COTW 2.0 - the picture edition

Greetings one and all. For some of you, this will be your first time receiving one of these messages, as it has been a year since the WikiProject Oregon Collaboration of the Week (COTW) was a regular thing. My hope is it gets back to being a regular thing.

Usually I would go over the past COTW, but we are basically starting out anew. So, without further adieu, this edition is our semi-annual picture drive. We usually try to do it when there is decent weather in the state, and today seems to fit the bill. Now although you are encouraged to go out and take pictures, you can also just search the internet for images that have the proper licensing and upload those. Flickr is one site that has a fair amount of content with the proper licensing (most images on Flickr are not compatible). See WP:COPYRIGHT in general. For some “free” sources, check out the our dormant subproject that has some links to sources.

Lastly, if you need to know what images we need, here are the requests. Please remove the request from the talk page if you add an image.

Finally (this is not image related), as the years have passed, we have lost many good editors, and others, like myself, are no longer in school or are working full-time or both, and thus are less active in the project. The project lives on, but it has created a bit of a power vacuum without a de facto cabal still around all the time. With that in mind, I encourage newer project members to step-up and fill some leadership type roles. Granted, we have no formal ruling junta or anything and no real defined roles, but there are many maintenance type tasks that some of us just took on to keep the project going. For instance, I ran the COTW, was pretty much the only one doing assessments, updating the portal, and even handing out the awards. I am sure others in the project can name what things they have done. The point being, that while I enjoyed those and still do some of those, I simply no longer have the free time to do all of it at a level that the project deserves. That said, I hope to start a discussion at WT:ORE where we can see if some newer editors would like to step-up and take on some of these tasks, which will hopefully make for a more inclusive project, and maybe get us back to the heyday of say 2008 when things were really rocking for WikiProject Oregon.

User:WWB Too/Richard Stengel

Hi WWB. I stumbled upon User:WWB Too/Richard Stengel while doing some cleanup of the Living people category. I'm not quite sure what to do with the page: as far as I can tell, the edits you made there were never transferred to the Richard Stengel so there's no possible history merge and it's become a bit of a content fork. If it's unused you might want to consider deleting it but if you keep it as a working copy, can you tag it as such and remove the categories? Best, Pichpich (talk) 20:39, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the note; I've just taken care of the categories. What happened is: another editor copied over my material from the sub-page into the main article, although they did not merge it, which left my page in place. Ands then neither I nor the other editor bothered to disable the categories, so using the WWB Too account I did just that a little while ago. Mea culpa, and thanks for the heads-up. HTML version of Eloqua guide?

Re [2]. I can't read the lines at the bottom of some pages, especially page 4 (Firefox 3.6.17 on Ubuntu 10.04), and don't want to go thru the HTML source or register for the PDF. Is there a plain HTML or text version somewhere? -- Jeandré, 2011-05-10t18:18z

In response to your question I'll post the list of Committee tasks from the IEG Meta page. The list is relatively easy to understand.

"1. Provide feedback on grant proposals: Check on proposals submitted to the IdeaLab and current proposals area, help to improve proposals and projects for which funding is sought, and ensure that sufficient information is provided and that goals and estimates are realistic.

"2. Evaluate finalized proposals: Review finalized proposals and community input, and score proposals according to rubric determined by selection criteria.

"3. Recommend proposals for funding: Recommend a shortlist of proposals for funding based on the available budget and projects."

Thanks for signing up to join the Individual Engagement Grants Committee! It is my pleasure to confirm your membership. We’ve got a lot to accomplish together, particularly during the next 6 weeks, and it will be awesome to have your help. Here is how to get started:

To make your membership official, please do 2 things by February 11th:

1. Introduce yourself in the IdeaLab.
2. Send your email address to IEGrantswikimedia.org, so that we can subscribe you to the committee mailing list.

Then there are 2 first tasks' for active committee members to start on right away:

1. Review information in the Committee Workroom (your new organizing hub on meta), including responsibilities and the review process. Feedback and questions are very welcome at this stage.
2. Start giving feedback on open ideas, drafts and proposals. Asking questions to gather information you’ll need to make a recommendation helps prospective grantees think their projects all the way through, and will give us more great proposals to choose from.

Our formal review of proposals starts February 22nd. I’ll be posting information about scoring and selection of proposals on the committee mailing list and in the Workroom soon, so please keep an eye there!

Regarding "Jimmy Wales, who currently still sits on the Board of Trustees, but will rotate off later this year": This appears to be a misunderstanding. The terms of all the Trustees are limited, including Jimmy's, but so far the Board has always reappointed him (most recently in January 2012: https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Vote:Reappointment_of_Jimmy_Wales,_2012 ), and there is no reason to assume it won't do so next time.
