Speedy deletion nomination of Asoka Handagam edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Asoka Handagam requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. roleplayer 15:23, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Asoka Handagama edit

I have moved this article to its proper title. I have not restored the speedy-deletion notice (though you should not have removed it yourself) because I think it makes a sufficient claim of importance to pass WP:CSD#A7. But if it is to be kept, it needs much work.

  • Wikipedia has a policy of WP:Verifiability which requires that "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source". For biographies of living persons this is so important that they are automatically deleted after ten days if not referenced - see formal notice below. See WP:CITE for how to add references.
  • For any Wikipedia article, it is necessary to establish notability by showing references to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."
  • An encylopedia article should not contain opinions like "is considered as the leader of the Third Generation of Sri Lankan cinema". Who says so? Either give a reliable source for a statement like that, or remove it. Generally, the article should contain facts, not promotional statements: when was he born? What films has he made? Did they get good reviews? Has he won awards? Back those facts up with published sources.

For advice on how to write an acceptable article, read WP:Your first article - it is worth taking the time to read that carefully. Look at some existing articles about film directors. You may be able to get advice from WP:WikiProject Film. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 15:54, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Asoka Handagama edit

The article Asoka Handagama has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, all newly created biographies of living persons must have at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article. The nominator also raised the following concern:

All biographies of living people created after March 18, 2010, must have references.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. JohnCD (talk) 15:54, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
