Lunar Panoramic Photography

Do you have any non NASA sources for this? Wikipedia's notability requirements are based around third party sources. I've run across passing mentions of the concept but I don't recall third parties covering it in any depth.©Geni (talk) 16:53, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

The NSSDCA references to Luna 9 and Chang'e 4 are simply links to concise descriptions of those missions, and the NSSDCA just happens to be NASA construct. There are numerous other references that could be used, including the relevant Wikipedia pages, but I happened to choose these.

The Apollo Lunar Surface Journal (ALSJ) is the definitive breakdown of the surface activities during those missions. Those activities are covered in lots of external sources (mission histories, astronaut biographies, etc.) but the taking of the panoramas is usually described as something like "taking a few photos" or "using the camera", which would reduce many such references to merely being trivial. In some respects, the ALSJ is a 3rd party source; yes, it's hosted by NASA, but it was conceived, created, and is maintained by a team of volunteers who are external to NASA.

And sticking to NASA resources isn't going to help much for the panoramas by the Soviet/Russian, Chinese, Indian, or Japanese probes (that is, should any be forthcoming from the Japanese one!) - other references have to be used for those.

I think you're right on the final point; I don't believe that there is a single 3rd party item that covers the concept. I think this is probably due to people overlooking the technique when they see the results... Usedtoknoweverything (talk) 12:56, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
