Centrifugal Force edit

I'm sure you've been waiting for this post. I'm not sure if you're the one I'm looking for, but you'll have to do for a start. I'm trying to stem the tide of centrifugal force abduction, because what has been left in its place is language that is impossible to understand. For example, I understood why people on the equator might perceive gravitational pull to be weaker than people on one of the poles...until I tried to read it as some removal of centripetal force.

So I see two options. Come up with some way to explain things like the above without rotating frame of reference, but also clearly and concisely. Or revert things to centrifugal force and try to convince people to stop removing it. The former is near impossible, but if you can do it, great. But here's my argument for the latter: everyone intuitively understands rotating frames of reference. Centrifugal force is not a force like the pull of an electron on a proton, true, it "appears" when you create a rotating frame of reference. But it does make sense. Is gravity a force, or space-time curvature? It's not a matter of what it "is", it's a matter of what it "does" relative to an observer. As far as I'm concerned, the best way to explain something is the simplest, and most intuitive. Let me know what you think. --Cesoid (talk) 02:33, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

In need of your mentorship edit

Hi,

I need help from an experienced Wikipedian, and I saw your name over at WP:ADOPT.

I need your advice concerning a WikiProject I've been coordinating. Here's the situation:

The project is WP:WPOOK. The set of pages the project concerns is listed at Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge#Projected outline, and has grown to about 500 articles in the encyclopedia. I also run a team of 5 advanced wiki-editors - the team communicates via user talk page posts. We use a variety of tools such as AWB, bots, Linky, etc. to execute tasks on batches of hundreds of pages at a time. Three of the team's members are admins, and 2 of the members have bot accounts. The team works on tasks that I assign, on the OOK and also on problems that the OOK has revealed in the encyclopedia-at-large (reverse outlines are good at that) - we've worked on things as diverse as creating country demonym disambiguation pages, to cleaning up the CIA World Factbook data on country "Demographics of" pages, to renaming "Cuisine of" articles to their demonymic form, to organizing the "Index of x articles" pages, etc. I also send out a newsletter or project update to the team, to the WikiProject members, and to anybody else who has been involved or who has expressed interest (20 to 30 Wikipedians).

So you see, we can implement just about any strategy. But we need more strategies. Your ideas on the following would be greatly appreciated...

The goals of the WikiProject are:

  1. Increase awareness of readers of the existence of the outlines on Wikipedia
  2. Complete the existing outlines
  3. Create an outline for every subject that is exensive enough to benefit from having an outline (core subjects and major or extensive fields). There are thousands of these.
  4. Recruit as many editors to work on these as possible (we need thousands of editors working on these)
  5. Surpass portals in number by the end of the summer, and leave them in the dust by the end of the year
  6. Get the major outline subject areas displayed on the Main Page (in place of or in addition to the portal links at the top of the page)
  7. Increase the OOK to higher quality than Britannica's Outline of Knowledge (published in its Propaedia volume).

We've posted over a thousand banners and notices so far, which resulted in just a couple complaints - one complainer posted at WT:WPOOK & WP:AN & WP:VPP and the other posted at WP:VPR. Not a bad negative feedback level for such a large posting. The complaints went nowhere, as several users came forward in defense of outlines.

I've proposed a 200-Wikiproject contest at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries, and I had notices posted on the talk pages of all the corresponding country WikiProjects' talk pages.

I've created some pointers for developing outlines to guide editors through the process of building outline pages, because once many editors are attracted, I won't be able to instruct them one-on-one. I've also been working on a new article for the subject, since the current article is very lacking.

I was hoping you could comment on how to achieve the goals above.

Also I'm interested in every possible way of reaching readers and editors of Wikipedia. How can I get the most eyes and typing fingers on Wikipedia's outlines? Contacting editors directly without a reason relevant to them is spam, which I'd like to avoid. There are 75,000 regular editors on Wikipedia, and I want to contact all of them. So how do I do it? Directly or indirectly, I don't care which, piecemeal or all-at-once, all methods are fine with me. But I've got to find ways. I need your help.

I would also like to know how to find or attract editors to create new outlines. And I need advice on finding editors to help write the new outline article mentioned above (it needs to be fleshed out, completely referenced, and brought to featured article status).

Can you recommend anyone in particular who might be interested in sinking their teeth into a project like this? Or ways to reach groups of editors? Or ways to reach all editors? I welcome any and all advice you might have.

I look forward to your reply on my talk page.

Dras, India edit

I deleted again the claim that Dras is the second coldest inhabited "place" in the world because, referenced or not, it is untrue and easily disproven. I would hope that we can agree that a website like weatherbase.com which holds climate data for the world can be taken to be more reliable than two websites about the town itself that would presumably not be considered reliable sources for anything else. Please let me know if you disagree. There are many other examples of inaccurate weather/climate information cited on Wikipedia but short of watchlisting every city article it is impossible for me to catch all of them. Note, also, that the IP who made the same deletion a few months ago was not me. Soap Talk/Contributions 15:22, 19 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

eMASS Article Deleted edit

I am wondering why the eMASS information post was deleted. It is government information that was for public distribution by a government entity. I thought it suitable to also convey what it is here. It is a Government-Owned-Off-the Shelf tool, not an Ad (read: it is not for sale). Taxpayers paid a lot of money for C&A practitioners to not know what it is, that it exists, and that it is supporting cyber policy - but gets deleted from wikipedia?? I don't know if either of the changes you made to the discussion section actually worked or not, but I changed the title to just plain "Mudkip" to try and help you to keep your sanity (I'm reasonably confident that won't trigger an alert). MelicansMatkin (talk) 00:20, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mark Weatherbe's page deleted edit

Hi This is Mark Weatherbe. I just ran across the deletion of page notice for my page. I did not know that I had a listing. It was probably my agent that put it up. The deletion says that there was blatant copyright infringment, but the flash of screen on first load looks like my biography off my web site and the same or similar is on the IMDB page. Please tell me what in my biography is a copyright infringment so I can fix it.

Thanks for your time,

Year zero edit

Hello: My name is Sam H. Hastings. I presume I should address you as thingg. So, here's a big hello, thingg. I noticed your name as having an interest in astronomical year numbering. I have been in a long-running debate with Joe Kress concerning his use of the sequence Year 2 BC,Year 1 BC, Year 0, Year AD 1 to justify placing the 1st year BC equal to Year 0 AD. He doesn't mention any Year 0 BC and it is so obvious that he has his cardinal years BC running backwards. They must be cardinal because of his particular usage. The Years BC need to be reversed in order to have "time" running forward. Do you thing I am on the right track? Your comments would be helpful. Hi edit

Hello thingg!

I am a very new Wikipedia user (in terms of actual input). Today I went to log on, and noted there was a message waiting for me. When I looked I found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:91.109.173.205&redirect=no

saying that I had 'vandalised' the '2008' page. I have never before visited this page, far less tried to edit it!

The IP address given isn't mine, according to my router settings.

I'd better enable email interaction in case something like this happens again, so I can react more quickly..

Why did you remove FrancisLightHouse's article? edit

This is what I posted see the text below:

History About The Club & FrancisLightHouse

In 1993 The Old York was opened. The two owners to start The Old York were Hidey and JFrancis. Which The Old York closed its doors in 1995. Then the summer of 1995 the club reopened and clanged the name to The YF. About five years it closed in the fall of 1999. Latter on in 2000 the club opened and all so changed the name to The YF/Justin and moved to a new place with caused the club to close for two months. After two months The YF/JUSTIN reopened for one year then closed due to building problems and renovated and changed the name to The YF/JUSTIN-FR. Then in 2005, the club moved and all so changed the name to Francis Light House, which did not open. Francis Light House hopes to open this year of 2006. Witch FrancisLightHouse did not open. The clubs had a website for the club and some links that we thought it would be good for the club members to visit. After the most of the website had closed we thought we bring it back to life by crating a website for you to type in a url and goto the webpage with out clearing up ou address bar. FrancisLightHouse is also know as FLH. FLH Address was the first webpage and it is still up to day, And so is the clubs website. After a a wile FLH added place for use to search for links. That's now called "FLH Search" After that followed the other links that you see at the top of this webpage. On Thursday, September, 17, 2009 the Admin's of FrancisLightHouse stated to redesigen the homepage alone with the other pages. The new collor is yellow along with the orginal dark blue, and the top with the same lighthouse and the sea background.

So how is this copyrighting if I am the owner of the site and to small? Please tell me.

Inaura (band) edit

Hi, I was about to create a page detailing the 90's UK band 'Inaura' who supported the Human League and released four singles on EMI records and one album on ORG records before disbanding. They have a continuing cult appeal here in the UK and web content is very scarce regarding them. Anyway, I noticed that on 26/11/2008 you deleted a similarly titled page citing A7 (group) as the reason. Is it okay to proceed with a new page or not? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! imho, they are marginally notable at best, but I'd say go for it. However, if you don't want it to get tagged for deletion pretty quickly, I'd recommend that you find as many references to reliable sources as you can and add them to the article. btw, if you put four tildes (~~~~) after your post, it will sign and date it for you. good luck with the article! Shahid Yousuf edit

Hi there. I just noticed your involvement in the deletion of this article back in October because it did not assert its notability. While I agree that the content of the article was fairly poor, it did state that the player had made over 60 appearances in first-class cricket. Just in case you weren't aware, as per WP:CRIN this means the subject is notable. I would personally have simply removed the gunk from the article but not deleted it. Just a friendly point :)

Hi! I think your list is hilarious. Here is something I saw you might want to add (in the '*gasp* No way?!' part). Cheers, --The High Fin Sperm Whale 21:22, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

General Stafford edit

Thanks for finding the image of Stafford, which I obviously couldn't do. I'm not sure if I'll use it for DYK, only because I have another baseball triple nomination with an image right now. But I still appreciate it. - PM800 (talk) 01:54, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors edit

Hi Thingg! Since you've been identified as an Awesome Wikipedian, I wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.

If that sounds like you and you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors during the current term, which started in January and goes through early May. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 19:14, 10 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Umak Island Coordinates edit

I was looking at the page for Umak Island and I came across a comment tag written by you that said "note these are not the correct coordinates, but please don't change them". What was your reasoing behind this, and is it okay for me to add the correct coordinates now? The incorrect coordinates are very confusing and messed up one of my other edits. Thanks. --Jakob Russian (talk) 04:16, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Andrés Duque edit

Please visit the new article Andrés Duque which you deleted in 2008. It has 6 new references, including sources such as The New York Times and the Village Voice, in addition to several websites. Please let me know if the article is OK. I believe these additional reliable sources satisfy the issue of notability.--Mgdelarosa (talk) 01:47, 30 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Just added BBC News reference.--Mgdelarosa (talk) 05:18, 30 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

216.159.126.253 edit

Hi Thingg, I extended your 31-hour block of User:216.159.126.253, since that IP had an extensive block log and a years-long history of vandalism. It could be that Huggle didn't recognise the previous block given its non-standard duration and how long ago it was made, but if not, could I trouble you to make sure your block durations reflect the user's history? Thanks a lot (and keep up the vandal-whacking; you've crossed my watchlist a few times), HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:29, 5 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

My apologies. I did not notice that that was a school (maybe because the internet is wonky where I am now). Thanks for correcting it. Thingg 17:30, 5 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks :D edit

Thanks for the barnstar. But really, it's all in Igloo ;). Best, --Kangaroopowah 05:42, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

User:Jellyboy33 edit

I just noticed you removed my request for administrator intervention in the case of User:Jellyboy33, who has continued vandalism after a last warning. There was no action taken against the user and the edit summary states "remove stale requests". I was wondering what that means and the reasons for doing that. I am still trying to learn the ropes, but I have not encountered this after making many such requests before. Yours, Michitaro (talk) 20:05, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I noticed the request had been there for a while and the user had not edited recently (ie. in the last hour or so), so I removed the request. Also, I didn't see anything in the user's recent edits that looked like obvious vandalism (basically the user was changing minor stuff in wrestling-related articles) although I admit I could be wrong about it because I do not know a lot about specific wrestlers and how they act. AIV is generally only used in cases where the vandalism is obvious and/or the user does not stop vandalising after being warned several times. If you want, you are more than welcome to relist the user there, but I didn't see anything that looked like obvious vandalism in the user's recent edits. Regards. Thingg 20:52, 14 December 2011 (UTC)]]Reply
Thanks for the response. The request had only been there for about 15 minutes before you removed it. The user's most recent edits (on UK Singles Chart) was reverted as vandalism, and had occurred only 30 minutes before I reported the user. Moreover, a page the user created Vilza Fenz was speedy deleted earlier today because it was a blatant hoax (the user also created mentions of this fictional person on several other pages, all of which were reverted too). I also don't know pro wrestling, so I can't judge the warnings that other editors had given, but they had given the user a last warning. This user is clearly a trouble maker, so I will resubmit the user to AIV. Michitaro (talk) 21:20, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
No need for an apology. I resubmitted the AIV with greater detail (which I probably should have done in the first place) and the user has been blocked. Michitaro (talk) 14:07, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

MSU Interview edit

Dear Thingg,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.115.210 (talk) 20:12, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
