You attempted to add the following paragraph to the article The Kingston Trio

"Today the legacy continues with the son of Nick Reynolds, Josh Reynolds, lovingly standing in for his father, displaying that same wonderful sense of humor, singing and performing on tenor guitar and percussion. The present line-up is further enhanced by Mike Marvin on plectrum banjo and the lush sounds of a Martin D 28 acoustic guitar which supports his baritone voice. Mike is the adopted son of Nick Reynolds and also his blood-nephew. The man credited for maintaining the traditional Kingston Trio sound is its third member: musical director, guitar, banjo player and vocalist, Tim Gorelangton whose dedication to the authenticity of one of America’s musical treasures guarantees that audiences both new and old will experience the thrill of The Kingston Trio in concert for years to come."

First of all, this was completely unsourced. We have no way to know that nyou are, in fact, the manager of a new version of the trio, or even that such a new version exists. Any text about such a new version of the group needs to be supported by citations to independent published reliable sources.
Secondly, even if supported by sources, the text quoted above is hopelessly promotional--it reads like a flyer for the band.Phrases such as Today the legacy continues, lovingly standing in for his father, (who says it is lovingly done?) wonderful sense of humor, (who has praised the humor?) The present line-up is further enhanced by (who says it is an enhancement?) The man credited for maintaining the traditional Kingston Trio (who has so credited him?), whose dedication to the authenticity of one of America’s musical treasures (who says that he is dedicated, or that the Trio is na "treasure"), and guarantees that audiences both new and old will experience the thrill of The Kingston Trio in concert for years to come. (who guarantees that, and who says that it is even a thrill?) are all unacceptable on Wikipedia. Wikipedia articles must state facts, not opinions. They must be neutral. Opinion can come in when it is directly attributed to a named person, often via a direct quote, and is cited to a reliable source that shows that the named person did in fact express that opinion. Not otherwise. The same applies to value judgements or appraisals. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 22:05, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

More Kingston Problems

edit

Hello Tenorbanjo -

We have a few more problems with some of the edits that you would like to make on our Wiki about the Kingston Trio.

1. In the Teahouse discussion of the edits here [1], you identified yourself as the manager and a new owner of the KT trademark. Well and good and best to you with that. But that does create a WP:COI, and the language on that COI page is very clear: "Do not edit Wikipedia in your own interests or in the interests of your external relationships." Important and relevant edits need to be made by someone not directly involved with the band.

2. When editor Cullen328 and I created the section "Trademark and Roster Changes" to address the current issues of interest to you, I mentioned that someone needed a formal announcement from Bob Shane about the changes. Bob responded promptly with the following statement on what was the KT website:

"I am pleased to announce the Kingston Trio legacy will be carried forth by Josh Reynolds, Mike Marvin and Tim Gorelangton, who will begin performing as the Kingston Trio in October 2017. As you all know, Josh is the son of founding member, and my friend and partner Nick Reynolds, and Mike Marvin is Nick’s cousin. Rounding it out is Tim Gorelangton, one of the only people Nick ever recorded with outside the Trio. It was Nick Reynolds’ and my fondest hope that Josh and Mike would carry on the Trio and family legacy."

That was sufficient to justify the inclusion of the second half of the "Trademark" section. However, two ancillary issues emerge.

a. Shane is explicit that Reynolds, Marvin, and Gorelangton will begin performing in October, 2017. Since as I note in my rv of your change to the band's personnel, Grove, Zorn, and Dougherty will be appearing as the KT in several remaining engagements until 10/1, changes in the group membership must wait until then, at which point the personnel will be changed promptly...

b. ..if and only if another problem can be resolved. The complete revamping of KT.com to KT.tv has eliminated Shane's statement - if it's on the .tv site I can't find it and I've gone through the whole thing. What that means is that the paragraph I wrote that leads up to and includes Shane's statement now is "unsourced," as we say around here, and my correctly-formatted footnote is what we call a "dead link" and or an "orphaned reference." That paragraph and Shane's statement could be removed at any time because of its lack of "sourcing."

Unlike the questions of COI, b here has a simple but necessary solution. Shane's statement must be on the .tv site or published in a newspaper, magazine, or RS website - or the personnel changes can't be made at all, October or not. It really shouldn't be much of a problem to find a good spot on .tv for the statement, and it should be reintroduced ASAP for 1) the paragraphs in Trademark to remain in the article and 2) to support the edits to change the personnel as of 10/1/17.

Other issues abound, but this is enough for now. To summarize - COI indicates that you should not be making edits to the KT article but may request that they be made on the Talk page, and Bob Shane's statement must appear in print or accessible online to have the Trademark section remain in the article and to make personnel changes when appropriate. regards, Sensei48 (talk) 00:52, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
