Overgrown stubs

This is the message I've been dropping on anyone on the Talk or Article pages since 13 May, I'd appreciate it if you can familarize yourself on the small article and stand-by to jump in on Tuesday with some cogent watersprays from a logical firehose! Thanks for the trouble -- the issue is trivial, (Is proper name plural or singular, Forsooth!) save there seem to be at least two teens in a war going well over three hundred edits in this one month sampling interval, over 70 edits in the past three days.

• I would appreciate a rational explaination (after you read my Comments in the subject dispute Talk:Tsushima Islands), of the arguement or arguments you consider vital and germane to the discusion and vote. Frankly, MOST all of you are being silly over nothing of particular importance, since both names can be redirected into the one used. I have left a comment concerning my contribution to the article, which contribution — seems to have triggered the current edit and revision wars. For that I apologize, but see the Comments on the vote. I am also taking the liberty of putting the vote section AFTER the Comments about same.
• Still, I have just spent over four hours of valuable spare time, and would welcome your thoughts after you read and understand the distinction I put forth between a governments termonology as a governing body and a geographical reference like an archepelego, which it certainly is.
• More to the point, I'd like to see your defense regarding your favorite POV of what I had to say viz a viz the mergest attitude of the senior editors and administrators that frequent the Wikipedia:VfD discussions. To my recollection, I don't recollect any of you hotheads in this dispute ever spending anytime thereon, possibly excepting Mel Etitis, but rarely even then.
• In any event, I'm neutral here, and have asked that the article be kept EDIT FREE for the next three days by placing The Inuse template into it — I'd copyedited over two and half hours before I suspended that effort the other night because this shameful fued was going on — proper English grammer does depend, unfortunately, on whether one uses the plural or the singular. I saved that on my hard drive, but I don't need to wade through yet another 70 edits to finish the job. As it is, this matter will probably double the time it takes for such a simple job.
• If you are local to Japan, some history of the canals or Sea-channel is certainly germane to the ongoing discussion, moreover, any cogent arguement you condsider being particularly telling needs to be clearly repeated in the current on going comments if you want them counted on in the vote.
• I will make sure this message goes to each contributor to the article the past month, so you are not being singled out. Now is the time to take a deep breath, for rational concise summaries, not all the arguing that is so wearisome in 66 printed pages - half a novelette, I'd guess! It's certainly a lot to ask your fellow editors to wade through on a minor issue.
• I will also personally be making sure that at least a dozen other Administrators I'm acquainted with take a look at the debate after the time below. I will in fact ask for twenty commitments, so be clear and respectful of our time!!!

Rohingya

I also have asked the original contributors to the page to remove the copyvio text, and rewrite the article. I have started Rohingya/Temp as a substitute, and would put the copyvio tag on the original article once I have enough content on the Temp page. Please take a look at Rohingya/Temp to see the proposed structure. The current contributors to the original page are quite hostile, and took part in 15 straight vandalism of the talk page and added obscene slurs there. Furling.jpg copyvio

looks like fair use to me. i've looked at Wikipedia:Fair use and went down the list of questions, it's from a sail training organisation (#9 The image and source (if known) suggest it is intended for wide distribution (such as promotional images) and being used in an article about sail training (#10 placed in a relevant article and no larger than required for the web based article).

i'm new here so i might be wrong on this but don't you think that Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags#Unfree_Images such as PUIdisputed might of been a more diplomatic way of initiating this conversation?

navclass, alanvilliers

ok. the navclass is mine, i'll send you the raw file if you like. i'm using the fair use to protect the kids from improper use as i don't have a model release for them but guided discoveries does. if i have to, i'll change it to gfdl.

as for the alanvilliers image from the parma, it's not pd because he only died in 1982 and it's not listed in the National Maritime Museum catalog of images they own. i couldn't find specific use of nmm images in either wiki or nmm regarding non-commercial educational use so i chose that one. can you advise? -Seasee

Double redirects

Hi Tagish,

I've run the basic logic of my double redirect finder over my friends and we can't find an error in it. I also have looked and I can't find any bugs in my program. Can you show me an example of a false positive that is not related to a fix that someone else has performed since the last snapshot of the english wikipedia. The last snapshot was on May 16, 2005. If you can show me an example I should be able to track down what went wrong. By the way, I've moved the discussion to the talk page for the cleanup project: User talk:Triddle/double redirect. Jaggery Image

Hi! I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you regarding the jaggery picture. The picture was taken by me in a recent trip to India (September 2004 to be exact). The picture was taken on the highway from Bangalore to Mysore in the southern state of Karnataka. Please let me know if you need any other specific information.

The consensus of those that have commented on your Jaggery-maker pic is that it's highly professional. So professional in fact that it should be either a) nominated as a featured image or b) considered suspect for copywright reasons. Please consider visiting Wikipedia:Template messages/Image namespace and chosing one of the copywright templates to add to your image's page (as well as adding some assertion that it's yours :)

Untagged images

Wikipedia:Untagged images is almost done, but its last run was in February sometime; so I guess we'll have gathered a few thousand more untagged images. I'm not sure who did the last SQL for this & don't think it was published. Would you fancy taking over the task of generating the lists ... from first principles? No problem there. I should be able to get that done tomorrow. However the initial report will not be with out problems: I still haven't figured out why some articles don't link right and there will probably be some false negatives but there shouldn't be any false positives. I have another plan that will be 100% accurate (unless something changes since the snapshot is taken of course) but that will take quite a while to implement. Additionally I will be able to provide a new report every time a snapshot comes out. Would you like the report to be the same format that I use on stubsensor? Triddle July 5, 2005 08:45 (UTC)

About the NUMBEROFARTICLES on the missing period project

I was the first one to implement the NUMBEROFARTICLES (as far as I know) on the Punctuation project. Even if the current project will end at 627k (even if there are 6,813,752 articles, which is less than 627k...), aren't we planning to continue doing this sso we can make Wikipedia a better place? Sure, this will 'end', but we will eventually do a new scan, and have new projects and soon cover all the articles. In addition to that, there's almost thousand less articles on Wikipedia than 627k... Which comes to a conclusion that dividing the 'done' by the 627k rather gives us a lower completion rate than the actual number. How do we divide by 627k when the articles aren't even there yet? I do not understand why you chose such a hostile tone on my user page. In any case, the point I make about stubs seems to be completely misunderstood, so I shall reiterate it. Take the example of phoneboxes - I know there is one phonebox in the Welsh Mountains which has been decorated with flowers, carpets and is cleaned daily. It is of note to the locals and is known more widely as it has been inclued on TV programmes and in Sunday newspapers. This is arguably comment-worthy- and worthy of a note in an encyclopedia. I would support a wikipedia article about such a phonebox - however - I would NOT support the creation of stub articles for each and every phonebox in the UK, along with catagory articles "Phoneboxes in Leeds", "Phoneboxes in Birmingham", "Phoneboxes in North London". The changes you are making causes the text (when bold) to wrap on certain pages. Cambridge Heath railway station for example. Please make sure your changes take this in to account and cause no text wrapping on any of the pages they are used on. A photo I myself have taken

Greetings :) I am a real newbie to wikipedia, so if this has been discussed and displayed ad nauseum, please forgive me. I have several photographs I have taken of a public figure listed in wikipedia, and I noticed the entry has no photographs. Would I just copywrite it this year in my legal name, or in the year the photo was taken? Is there a step by step tutorial for a situation like this? There are actually many photos to use on other websites on the internet, but it seems it would be complicated to get permission in a form that is accepted by the wikipedia image upload staff (but if you consider this an easier route than uploading and copywriting my own photographs I took as an amateur photographer, please let me know) Thanks :)

I was wondering what in Wikipedia:Untagged images you thought this was redundant with. I thought maybe you misunderstood what the reason for this page was: it's to store a list of all untagged images beginning with "Q." It's now empty, because I took care of all the "Q" images, but will eventually be repopulated and probably should be kept until the project is done, anyway. Apparently it would violate the GFDL to simply dump en's free images at commons, because it "destroys" the history. Although I guess it should be fine for images that haven't had any changes at all (and there must be surely quite a few)... I dunno. 1. Thanks for doing that so quickly. Its easy to upload to commons without selecting a license as you can choose "none selected" - this is to allow people like me to use custom templates. So I uploaded those images to commons - I'm being a dumbass about what I do with the old ones - do they have to go through the whole article deletion process?

Am I right in thinking all of the 3,218 images in todays first batch are also found in the second 38,318 batch? I've spotted some repeats. If so, we should withdraw the 3,218, non? --Tagishsimon (talk)

Empty image description pages versus Commons images

I'm not sure what's going on: are we saying that we have image description pages which are not linked to an image? How odd. If so, is another approach to recognise that condition within a script? --Tagishsimon (talk)

I think that is the case, yes. It's certainly technically possible to either check to see if the image page exists with no local image, or if a licenced copy exists on Commons, though it would be a bit of effort. The question is, though, is this an acceptable situation, or should we tell people to do something to fix it? (Like delete the local description page?) If these pages do need to be fixed, then it seems OK to leave them mixed in. If they are OK as they are, I'll need to code some more. -- Beland 02:41, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

I've pointed out some errors in the 'Morpeth Rail Crash' article :) . Certainly no fatalities in the 84 crash, I don't think there were any in the 77 crash either.

Sorry if I was badgering you :) . I remember the 84 crash very well - the impact (our house seemed to jump a foot in the air), the scene - turf inside the carriages, letting people out who couldn't reach the doors (some carriages were on their sides so doors were above them and out of reach) burglar alarm on the demolished house going off (a fireman finally smashed it with a sledgehammer), the aftermath - BR brought steam cranes along to lift carriages and repair track. Various people whose houses backed onto the line had (presumably ilicitly) put gates in their fences and used the embankment to grow vegetables, so they let neighbours in to watch repairs. Atmosphere was like a street party. Only injury I heard of was to a sleeping car attendant who tried to crawl out and got stuck. Testament to strength of carriages.

Don't remember 77 crash at all, so possibly quite minor?

Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys reference

Hi. I was looking down the Simpson Neologisms page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made-up_words_in_The_Simpsons)and noticed that the Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys quote was attributed to a UK '80s phrase there, while it was considered to be a 1995 phrase from the writer Ken Keeler in another Wikki section (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese-eating_surrender_monkeys). I amended the second to cross-refer to the first rather than destroy the first, so that no data would be lost - please examine and amend as you wish.

Thanks for your detailed exlanation of "entoleted" I am much the wiser now. After having it going round in my head for 12 hours I thought I had derived a partial explanation i.e. ento-leted........bugs-removed, probably by sifting I surmised.
