I would not say that I "hate" them; but they are generally Dilbertian exercises, seldom used for anything other than for marketing, and perhaps to make management feel good about itself for a few seconds. In any case, they are not encyclopedic content; and in the case of this article, the mission statement language was part of what made the article appear as an advertisement. Hello! It would be good if we had a short, simple summary - something like Wikipedia:Cheatsheet - that covered the main points of images and copyright. Either we don't or if we do have one I don't know where it is.

• It's easiest to say what we can't use first. It is very unlikely we can use promotional pictures of currently-active bands or people who're still alive. The same applies to modern cars and trucks and planes and ships and to buildings which still exist (although this can depend on what country the building is in). All of these things someone could go out and take a picture of and upload here as free content. I'm afraid that the picture above falls into this category.
• Some things you can't possibly go out tomorrow and get a free picture of. Among these are dead people, bands that broke up years ago, things which the law wherever the thing is stops you photographing, things like toys where the design is copyrighted, stills from recent films and TV shows, album covers, coins, stamps, recent artworks. For these things we can take promo pictures or screen shots or things like that. There are restrictions (this page tries to explain them) but as a general rule a picture of whatever it is the article is about would be OK even if it wasn't a free picture.
• For things you photograph yourself, or that people release under a suitable license (Wikipedia:Image copyright tags explains what is suitable) on Flickr or some other website, these are OK too in general. I can only say "in general" because there could be legal problems depending on what the picture is of and where it was taken.
• Finally, some things are in the public domain because they are old and the copyright expired. Anything published before 1923 is usually OK. Things published after that might be, but Wikipedia:Public domain would be the place to start. Some countries base things on so many years after the author died, others on so many years since publication. Figuring out exactly what is in the public domain is pretty hard work unless it is obvious.

The only general advice I can give you is that if you are in any doubt ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. I hope this is some help. If not or if anything isn't clear, please let me know. Angus McLellan (Talk) 21:55, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

If, at some point, you were in contact with one of the band members, what I would do is pursue this route. Essentially, this is asking them to release that one photo under the "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License." As soon as you forward the email to the OTRS address, you can place this permissions-pending template on the image page, and comment over at the pic's entry at FfD, basically mentioning permissions is pending, and the process should be paused (provided the email has been sent). If it somehow gets removed, and the band agrees via email to release the image under the Creative Commons license, an identical can always be re-uploaded. I'm not sure if Face will agree to it, but it's worth a shot. I know this seems like bureaucratic nonsense, and it's definitely frustrating, but it protects Wikipedia from legal battles, so it's ultimately necessary. I didn't notice the image had been tagged until you messaged me, so if you decide to contact the band and have them agree to release the image, let me know on my page if you run into any snags and I'll do my best to assist.—DMCer™ 00:18, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

I know, it sucks that it's all not more user-friendly, but oh well. Evidently, the photo's been removed. I'll contact the group via email soon (unless you've already begun the process — let me know if you have), and see about getting it released under the Creative Commons license. more dance companies

hello. thank you for your work on the dance page! there are a number of important companies that should be listed, i can think of 10 in Paris alone -- important in that they are changing the dance scene. i am thinking in particular of those that work with new technology (and in particular of the one i work with, palindrome, which i just added to the list). The few among them that had articles published have been taken down, i guess due to perceived COI (the directors or managers, or members etc. often posted the information themselves). well, its too bad, because the information was useful. do you have any tips on what i and others could do to make wiki a more useful reference for dance and especially new ideas in dance such as dance and technology. regards, robert wechsler robert@palindrome.de ps. nice handstand! Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Colorado

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Colorado, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semi-active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there haven't been much active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. I have begun a discussion on the projects talk page to see how the members of the project feel about this suggestion.
