Help

Hi, I had posted a request on Talk:Shamsheer Vayalil for adding a city name in the article. The subject on the talk page is "Edit request 21 December 2019". I had tagged one of our fellow editor in that request but he is currently inactive on wikipedia. Please help. Thanks. (223.230.172.15 (talk) 18:22, 26 December 2019 (UTC))

  • I did it myself. Sorry for the inconvenience. (223.230.172.15 (talk) 18:32, 26 December 2019 (UTC))
    That was easy! S Philbrick(Talk) 19:09, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi, my edit is not saved. I tried at least four times but none of the edits are saved. Can you help in adding that city name? Please visit Talk:Shamsheer Vayalil .

Thanks. (223.230.172.15 (talk) 03:09, 27 December 2019 (UTC))

No

No, I don't understand reason of your deletion of 18 January 2018 in: User:Forza bruta/sandbox because I transleted entire text from Italian language to English in the same page! Can you restore the text in my talk page? Text was an important source by a book in Italian language. Regards --Forza bruta (talk) 14:00, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

Forza bruta, Most of what I work on are copyright violations but that doesn't seem to be the issue in this case. It was deleted as a G13. Restoration of the deleted G 13 is the simple as asking for it to be restored, and there was a link on the page to request restoration. However, not wanting to be overly bureaucratic I've done it.
I do have some concerns. you just said that you "translated entire text of Italian language to English in the same page", but looking at the page, almost all is in Italian with only a pair of sentences in English. Is the text in Italian written in your own words? If not, it may be a copyright violation. Translation of copyrighted material is still a copyright violation. S Philbrick(Talk) 23:14, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

Institute of physics page

Hi, thank you for you pickup on the institute of physics page. I understand the issues with the 'publishing' section, but I don't follow why you have rolled back previous edits on eg budget information that are fully referenced. Were these 'collateral damage' or is there something fundamental wrong with them? Thank you. Khcf6971 (talk) 07:15, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

- I have reverted to a version which doesn't have the copyright violation material but does include some of the referenced material you removed in the edit. I hope this is ok ? Khcf6971 (talk) 08:17, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

Khcf6971, collateral damage is one way to put it, but it is simply the case that it is practiced to rollback all consecutive edits when one or more is identified as a copyright violation. While that can have the impact of I'm doing perfectly acceptable edits, it is quite common that the other edits are integrated in such a way that the whole thing needs to be rolled back. Typical practice is to do a rollback, and then restore selectively if some are okay. S Philbrick(Talk) 13:58, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

Yes?

Hi S Philbrick. Looking for a favor... can you protect this page?

Are you @A-Frodo-Dziak:? In any event, user talk pages are rarely protected, and then only when there is persistent vandalism which doesn't seem to be the case. S Philbrick(Talk) 14:00, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

IOTA draft

Hi, you reverted a large number of edits [1]. Please assist me to recover the text, as this was a lot of work. Also note I believe i rectified the copyright issue by the time you reverted it. The copyright issue was probably just picked up by a bot, on on diff and was fixed by the later diff. Did you review it the diffs, or just revert based upon the bot? Jtbobwaysf (talk) 17:12, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

Jtbobwaysf, I've temporarily undone the revision deletion, and reverted but we are not done. The potential copyright issue was picked up by an automated process. I confirmed that it was a copyright violation, and therefore did a rollback as is our standard practice.
It is not acceptable to drop in some copyrighted material and then edit it away. Wikipedia doesn't permit copyright violations in any version of the article not simply the most recent one.
If you can point out where the copyright violation was removed, I can perform the revision deletion on all the intervening edits. S Philbrick(Talk) 18:10, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
The drop in wasnt intentional, I was editing and hit enter and it saved. I always drop in the text to the window and edit it there, really rare that i hit the enter button and save by accident. I will look through and see if I can find the offending text. Thanks! Jtbobwaysf (talk) 18:35, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
I have now removed the two sub-sections that had content from this [2] forbes source, since i can see from the bot summary this was the offending source. I have moved it to my talk page. Let's see if we get a copyright error on my talk page, and if not, I will restore back to this article tomorrow. Thank you for your help. I also saved the entire edit into a word file on my computer so if i have more issues I can manage it on my end. Thank you! Jtbobwaysf (talk) 18:44, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
If for housekeeping purposes you want to re-revert, I have the necessary files to restore it again tomorrow (should be without any copyright issues). Or you can leave it as it is now, as I have also cleaned up the text on both the draft article, and also in my sandbox. Thanks! Jtbobwaysf (talk) 19:15, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

Ripam 2004 (talk) 14:52, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

Ripam 2004, Are you talking about this:?
Draft:Deltaic Forests
If so, it appears you copied it from Britannica and it is been marked as a copyright violation. if so, it will be removed soon. You need to write material in your own words in general. S Philbrick(Talk) 16:14, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

I have an issue. I wrote an article in my sandbox. I was not founding an option to make it a draft. So I moved it into drafts. Would it be reviewed and if possible can it be published in wikipedia as an article..plz suggest me how to proceed. thanks...

ok. i understood. i will keep that in mind from future while creating aticles. Sphilbrick Thank you for the help and suggestion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ripam 2004 (talkcontribs) 16:29, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.

Place for ResponseEditor to post

Thank you for the opportunity to corroborate the statements I made to Bill Sipper's Wikipedia page.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia published this press release on the conviction: https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/new-jersey-man-pleads-guilty-sexually-assaulting-colleague-during-business-trip-district

Considering the source is Justice.gov, I would proffer that it is a more credible source than a 3rd party news paper.

Bill Sipper has hired reputation management professionals to suppress the arrest and I believe it is important to publish it to his Wikipedia page as it is truthful and important for the public to know. Do you agree?

I want to discuss with with some other editors. Given the seriousness of the charge I'm sure you understand the need to handle this carefully. I reached out to one editor who has experience in this area, although I'm concerned that he is not currently active. If that fails I will check with someone else.--S Philbrick(Talk) 01:35, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
@ResponseEditor: As I mentioned, I wanted to get some additional input from others. I reached out to one editor who has not yet responded so I have reached out to another editor (minutes ago) to ask for some input.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:30, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
You have made some allegations that are not backed up by facts. For that reason, I have revision deleted your assertion. I have seen it. This is a 10-year-old incident. I'm not referring to the age to suggest it is unimportant, but to suggest that we can take a few days to sort out how to handle it--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:06, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

On Sipper's Wikipedia page he has scrubbed this information, just like he scrubbed it from Google searches of "Bill Sipper." It is factual and the fact that he is taking actions to suppress it is disturbing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.59.5.208 (talk) 14:42, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

{{tps}} Since this seems to be a place for collecting/discussing sources related to this content... [3] is a 2012-07-30 Form 10-K public filing from New Leaf Brands, Inc that states "In December 2010, the Company’s Chief Operating Officer, William Sipper, resigned following an alleged incident involving a prospective employee of the Company." I think this 10-K is above WP:PRIMARY regarding that that there was an allegation of an incident involving this person. DMacks (talk) 15:42, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
And here [4] is a January 10, 2011 report noting "New Leaf Brands, Inc.'s Chief Operating Officer, William Alan Sipper, has resigned. The Company and Mr. Sipper are currently negotiating the full terms of Mr. Sipper's resignation which was effective on December 31, 2010. The resignation follows an allegation of personal misconduct made by a female subcontractor during recent trade show. Although correspondence regarding the matter imply liability on the part of the Company as well as Mr. Sipper, the alleged incident is unrelated to his role as Chief Operating Officer.". DMacks (talk) 16:18, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
DMacks, thanks for that information. I've reached out to another agent to discuss this matter. S Philbrick(Talk) 16:20, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

Your trouble with me seems minor

Not worth reading --S Philbrick(Talk) 03:06, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

After you chased me down and eliminated my one historical marker I keep seeing examples of others you're leaving alone.

For example, on this page there are 4 legible markers just like mine. Three that are strictly pictures of markers and the headline or lead image, once expanded, the marker is readable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenwood_Cemetery_(Houston,_Texas) Wiki name (talk) 02:18, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

Jim Evans, Wikipedia:Other_stuff_exists
I'm not quite sure I understand your point although based on one guess, the above essay may be relevant. The chance that you care, I spend a fair amount of my day looking into copyright issues. I don't peruse Wikipedia articles looking for them, I am active monitoring the foundation created tool that identifies potential copyright violations. I don't recall exactly what led me to see the one involving you. As I mentioned, I found that particularly intriguing because I myself fell victim to it early in my Wikipedia career.
If you have identified other problems, feel free to bring them to someone's attention Wikipedia:Copyright_problems S Philbrick(Talk) 02:30, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
My point is, you tracked down and summarily deleted the marker I posted. Now you say you don't "peruse[sic] Wikipedia articles looking for them" yet even when I point you to a page with 4 "violations" the same as my 1, you do nothing. Wiki name (talk) 15:40, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
Jim Evans, It sounds like you didn't even read my response. I didn't "track down" your violation. It showed up in my routine reviews. I didn't do "nothing" regarding the item you identified (which I didn't look at) I showed you how to address it. S Philbrick(Talk) 16:19, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
I read your response, all you're saying is used a Wikipedia process to find it. So let me see if I understand this: you ignore copyright violations brought directly to your attention. And your excuse is that some Wikipedia Protocol wasn't used. So you really don't care anymore, now that you're done getting mine removed. Wiki name (talk) 20:36, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
Jim Evans, It appears you forgotten how we arrived at this place:
  1. you uploaded a photo which appeared to violate copyright
  2. I was intrigued by the specific issue, because I had made the same mistake early in my Wikipedia career before I learned more about copyright
  3. you asserted that the upload was fine
  4. I hoped you were right, because it might mean that a number of other similar images would be okay
  5. I urged you to do some more research to confirm that it was acceptable
  6. you declined to help
  7. rather than just drop it, I decided to help out by contacting the Texas historical Society
  8. I did some research to track down who would have the answer, and I reached out and contacted them
  9. Unfortunately, your belief that it was acceptable was not supported
  10. I was pulling for you, ask your help which you declined to provide, went out of my way to look into it myself, because I hoped you are correct.
  11. The appropriate response would be to thank for going the extra mile to try to help you
  12. instead, you decided to come to my talk page and whine
  13. I'm a volunteer. That means I get to work on what I want to work on. S Philbrick(Talk) 21:15, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
Then as now you assert things that are false. I'm not here to re-argue it. By this diatribe you are deflecting from why I came. I've brought you more egregious violations wanting to see if you are as interested as you were in mine. But, today you don't care about such violations and want to talk about something else. Wiki name (talk) 22:31, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
Jim Evans, Not interested. Does that answer your question? S Philbrick(Talk) 23:32, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

BS 8878

I can understand your concerns about copyright. Thanks for being vigilant. You also removed links to and another site, which I cannot understand: https://kieren.blogs.bristol.ac.uk/2010/12/15/launch-of-bs-8878-web-accessibility/

Could you verify why you would have removed the external references I added? Mgifford (talk)

@Mgifford: We get hundreds of reports each week. For that reason, when we detect a problem, we typically do a rollback, which sometimes picks up and reverts material that's perfectly fine. Feel free to restore anything I removed if you are confident that it's not a copyright issue. Let me know if you need help.--S Philbrick(Talk) 17:13, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Apologies

Hi - I just G12ed a couple of drafts (Draft:MAMMOTH (Nuclear Software) and Draft:BISON (Nuclear Software)), without realising that you had already declined requests for that to happen. I came across them independently - I was looking at AfC, and saw a bunch of drafts which were wholly comprised of external links, so I took a look at what else the editor had been writing, and saw these drafts, which were obvious copy/pastes from a website. I should have investigated more thoroughly, as you are right the text is probably PD and so could have been allowed to remain in draft space while the editor worked on them. I've asked if they would like me to undelete - I just wanted to drop you a note to apologise for treading on your toes. Let me know if you think I should take any further action on this. GirthSummit (blether) 08:50, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Girth Summit, no apology necessary, in fact it may turn out that you are right. See User_talk:Rankin15#Issues. I thought it was a straightforward case of being public domain because it is the Department of Energy, but further investigation suggests it may be an independent contractor working for the Department of Energy which doesn't make it automatically public domain. I suggested waiting a little bit to hear from the editor and taking action at that time. I don't see any need to restore until the status is sorted out.
I am very aware of situations where one comes at something from an independent direction. I continue to be amazed at the willingness of volunteers to do the work they do for this project in a broad sense, and in a more narrow sense, the willingness of volunteers to enter into collegial discussions when disagreements exist. Visa policy of Singapore

Greetings, you have removed 4 edits of mine.

I have used the following link as verbatim reference: https://www.ica.gov.sg/enteringanddeparting/entry_requirements/e-arrival-card

This is because the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority represents the only legitimate source for this Electronic Arrival Card system. Other sources are illegitimate.

I will paraphrase the content on the website to prevent the same thing from happening. If you intend to take it down again, please contact me first and I will try to amend it accordingly.

There are times it is appropriate to use verbatim language (although rarer than some realize). That's ok is properly in quotes or blockquote and referenced. In general though, it is best to paraphrase.--S Philbrick(Talk) 11:03, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Earth System Governance Project

Dear Sphilbrick. I just spend more than hour on editing all the publications of the Earth System Governance Project (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Earth_System_Governance_Project&action=history) and you just deleted my work because of copyright issues. Can you please tell me excactly what I was copyrighting? I cited everything accordingly and if you tell me what I did not cite I can edit that if you remove your deletion of my work. I just need to copy paste and edit the copyright thing, but right now all my work is lost!! Please undo your deletion and tell me the copyright thing, so I can adjust it. Thanks EarthUnicorn — Preceding unsigned comment added by EarthUnicorn (talkcontribs) 14:55, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

OTRS query

Hi Sphilbrick, a quick query, if an actor was disputing their birthdate as published by Wikipedia (and as supported by a reliable source), would they be able to send copies of their ID to Wikipedia through OTRS? Is that a correct usage of the system? I seem to recall there being an issue like this for an Indian actress a bunch of years back and one of the OTRS volunteers saw the docs and verified the content. A similar issue has come up with a friend of a notable actor disputing the sourced DOB, and I was looking for an option for the subject to prove their birth date. Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:29, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Cyphoidbomb, We do NOT want copies of IDs, not licenses or passports or anything similar. It may have been done years ago, but we have decided we do not want to have primary documents in our possession. Obviously, this begs the question of what is acceptable, and we are still trying to sort that out. This often comes up in the context of a username, and I typically urge a pseudonym, but that doesn't apply here. Unfortunately, our best advice is to contact the reliable source and get them to make the change. I've actually seen that happen, but it can be challenging. S Philbrick(Talk) 16:55, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
Ah! OK, thanks for the info, I'll put that in the old noggin. Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:01, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
