Welcome to the Wikipedia! edit

Hello, and Welcome to the Wikipedia, Haplolology! Thanks for the edit over on the List of autistic people article. Here are a few perfunctory tips to hasten your acculturation into the Wikipedia experience:

And some odds and ends: Boilerplate text, Brilliant prose, Cite your sources, Civility, Conflict resolution, How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Pages needing attention, Peer review, Policy Library, Utilities, Verifiability, Village pump, and Wikiquette; also, you can sign your name on any page by typing four tildes: ~~~~.

Best of luck, Haplolology, and most importantly, have fun! Ombudsman 03:01, 7 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

re-dinosaur article edit

Ok, i didn't mean to offend anyone-i'm new to wikipedia and thought that the talk page was where you discussed that kinda thing that's all...

I just wasn't sure where you got the idea that it was mostly boys that enjoyed learning about dinosaurs because in my experience that simply isn't true. No need to get defensive-it certainly wasn't my intention to cause you any offence, i was just voicing my reasons and my opinions. I apologise if i offended you. Greebo cat 00:37, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just as a note though, i do see it as kinda rude that you took it upon yourself to remove my entry from the talk page-i thought that was a forum where everyone was allowed to voice their opinions-not where some users are allowed to censor others because they don't see what they're saying as important. As long as i'm not nasty or aggressive, there is no reason for you to make changes to my entries just to suit your own views on the subject...Greebo cat 00:49, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Just FYI Haplolology, it's contrary to Wikipedia rules to remove another person's comments from an article discussion page, unless the comment is a personal attack, outright vandalism or wildly inappropriate in some other way. Discussing the content of the article--even a seemingly minor or trivial part of that content--is entirely appropriate for a discussion page. KarlBunker 14:41, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bump·kin (bump’kin) n. [abbrev. Bumpasskin] edit

Yes you're absolutely correct, but I think you misunderstood. I was simply pointed out the irony that coincidentally an abbreviate of Bumpasskin is Bumpkin. Not that I was trying to say that the latter term was derived from it and as far as "Rustic Capital of World" perhaps "Rustic Capital of the English Speaking World" is a bit more proper. The area has also other local nicknames the most prevalent the B.F.E. which stands for Bum Frick'n Egypt, Bum Fried Egypt, or the more vulgar Bum **** Egypt. Remind me to talk about

No need to thank me. I saw it in Special:Recentchanges and thought it was interesting, so I just filled it out a wee bit. I expect more information will come to light in due course. -- Scjessey 22:10, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Human height edit

I've just discovered your edit to this page. Your summary: "I see no reason to consider this more dubious than the others, and yes I have read the talk page"

Please explain. -- Smjg 00:13, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Are you the one who marked it dubious? If so I would like to hear your explanation. I removed the dubious tag because I couldnt see what was so wrong with it. I even went and looked in the source and there it was. So it seems like okay data to me. Haplolology Talk/Contributions 06:24, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
How much of the talk page did you read before you jumped to the conclusion that the explanation wasn't there? -- Smjg 12:16, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well I saw that back when I erased the edit the first time, but I didnt remember that it was you. It didn't even occur to me that it could have been you, because that sentence was about a metric conversion error rather than the accuracy of the data, which is as genuine as any of the others on the Wikipedia page. I didn't bother to fix the conversion error because it is so small (a hundredth of an inch) and data of this type is, as a rule, approximate due to measurement errors. If you wish I will add .01 inches to both measurements, thus bringing them in line with the true metric values, and remove the dubious tag. There's no real way to revert all the edits at once, though it is quicker with the rollback tool. Even then, you need to check the edits because some might be OK such as this. If you are using Firefox there is Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Twinkle that can make vandal fighting quicker. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 20:18, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

IBuyStrays.com edit

Hi Hap,

Thank you for your partisanship, but it still appears you don't completely "get it".

Have you seen this page? http://ibuystrays.com/lies.html

It lists and links the responses to the site from Peta, the president of the US Humane Society, the ALF and other news organizations, and online views from snopes, hoaxapedia, and others. IBS was an international phenomena making a splash in print media as well as online not only in the US but also Europe and Canada, the UK, and Australia. Further, the site is having a real influence on the laws governing class B animal dealers in the US. If you check it out the Lies page, you should appreciate idea behind the site more fully and the effect it has had.

I tried to find an email address for you or some other way to contact you but could not. Please do drop me an email after you see that page (or decide not to) so I'll know you got my message.

Thanks,

Human height edit

Hi, I just see your website about human height, very good, but some information was wrong. I have a lot of tables about human height and studies about this. Some of this studies I have put on the "Human Height" here in wikipedia. Tables from Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, Philippines, China and Gambia. How you can see, English is not my primary language, but I still can talk, my e-mail is italo.neto@uol.com.br. Help me to edit "Human Height", I'm only a beginner here in wikipedia. Thank's.

Your web site about Human Height edit

Hello, first I need to ask you, do you know how to block a page for editing by IP? I ask this because I need to block the human height page to avoid vandals. About your web site, the 167cm for males and the 156cm for females from Brazil is only for rural people. The entire population is 169m and 158m. China 169,7 is wrong, see the real data in the human height page, for Urban and Rural 17 years old chineses boys and girls. All data from "2002 Survey by a Japanese women's clothing outfitter" is wrong because it's not take entire population, again I have post the correct data on Human Height, here in Wikipedia. Another wrong data is from "Vietnam News Agency 2002 report", the height for males in this country is about 162cm. See the Human height's article, there I have posted data from Vietnam, Indonesia, China,India, Iraq, Bahain, Ghana, Gambia, Malawi, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Brazin and Mexico. Again sorry for my bad English, if you need further informations can speak to me! Thank's for your help, friend.

Maple edit

You might want to look at User:Circeus/Maple, which happens to have a lengthy discussion on the topic of maple etymology. I'm not clear on the sound changes (I can ask people who are more competent than me on it, though), but Ahorn is not related to Latin ācer ("sharp"), but to acer ("maple"), as well as Danish ær, and all three derive from a different PIE root. /k/ to /h/ correspondences are well-known, especially at the initial (e.g. heart vs cor), see Indo-European sound laws, but I have no idea whether or not they are possible in intervocalic position.

Why ask me instead of one of the PIE experts over at ZBB? Circeus (talk) 15:02, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

My hypothesis is that the word is from PIE, not from Latin as Grimm suggests, although as I mentioned, I'm not really versed enough in IE sound change to discuss the topic any further, and it's been a LONG time since I wrote that page. I just noticed that the Friedrich reference (which was very useful, although a bit confusing for me) is not actually listed. It's Friedrich, Paul (1970) Proto-Indo-European Trees: the Arboreal System of a Prehistoric People. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. xv-188 p. ISBN 0-226-26480-7. AS and crime edit

Soap. Thank you for your level-headed intervention on the AS talk page re my introduction of the AS and crime studies. You were indeed correct in your suggestion that I might not be related to prior events, comments, or editors. I had no knowledge of those whatsoever. As it stands Eubulides on three separate occasions introduced the paranoid possibility that I am a sock puppet -even deleting my entire post, links and all as if it were so- and this without a single shred of proof except for the fact that (it seems) someone somewhere raised something about AS and sexual abuse (which I know nothing about) which is somehow connected to my entry on the talk page! Great evidence. Perhaps he could have compared IP addresses with the sock-puppet villain before acting impulsively? About two years ago (maybe less, am guessing) i looked at the AS entry briefly and noticed editor Eubulides doing what I thought was a marvelous balanced contribution to that entry. Unfortunately today I find myself in a quandary and wonder if those detractors who accuse him of bias have some validity to their claims? His behavior today certainly goes some way to validating them. I will take his behavior up with Wikipedia management.

Thank you for intervening with your balanced commentary. 58.170.49.139 (talk) 04:43, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Climate normals edit

It's funny you asked that. When I went back to check, I had trouble finding it!

  1. Go to main page, http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/ncdc.html
  2. Click on Free Data
  3. Scroll down to Free Data B
  4. Look at bottom of right hand table, click on 1971-2000 Normals Products Page link
  5. The one I used was the Daily Station Normals 1971-2000 (CLIM84)
  6. Select state
  7. Select station
  8. The ones I used link to the link that has - Web Form to the right.

This should get you what you need, let me konw if that does it. WxGopher (talk) 00:19, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I'm glad I found that site too. That's about as official as you can get, so I went with it. Why Winona is warm I don't know for sure, but in the Minnesota Weather Almanac by Mark Seeley, which I use as a source in the Climate of Minnesota article, there is a small note on it. It says... "This stretch of the Mississippi River, from Hastings, Minnesota to La Crosse, Wisconsin offers one of the state's most hospitable climates for plants. Winona's average frost-free growing season is 166 days, more than two weeks longer than that of Rochester, which lies only 40 miles to the west. In fact, some growing seasons in the Mississippi River Valley have stretched to more than 200 days. In addition, winter temperatures are less extreme. Perennial plants tend to survive for longer periods, their vibrancy made visible in the area's vineyards, apple orchards, and other fruit and nut trees". So it has something to do with it being in the southern part of the state, and in the Mississippi River Valley. WxGopher (talk) 03:20, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Hurl level 8.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Macedonian phonology edit

That's a good point. I'd say that the thing to do is shrink down the section in Macedonian language. For now, the Macedonian phonology article might be on the border of "needing" to be separate but since, in the future, we'll only find it expanding, I don't see a need to merge it with Macedonian language now only to unmerge it six or ten months from now. — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɻɛ̃ⁿdˡi] 19:14, 14 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re:Polish Cyrillic edit

Hi, nice to meet you too. Originally I had Л for /l/ and Љ for /w/ based on Macedonian. The Macedonian Л is a /l/, but there is no /w/ sound, and therefore no letter for it. I picked Љ not based on phonology, but orthography, because the Polish way to write it is Ł (a modified L) and Љ is a modified Л. At some point user:QuartierLatin1968, who also stumbled across me somehow, pointed out basically what you said, and I changed the table, but I forgot to change the description. So thanks for reminding me :). BalkanFever 06:47, 21 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Note edit

You might be interested to know that the "Non-violent first-person shooters" category you had created three months ago has been re-created and is again up for discussion. I believe it is a useful category and in the interests of gaining a consensus, I was wondering if you would explain in your words why you had created it initially. I have not informed User:Haipa Doragon (the initial CFD nom) because his rationale is already presented, but your view on why you initially created it is missing. Anyway, if you are interested in participating the discussion can be found here. -Thibbs (talk) 22:06, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
