Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%

Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC

New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers

Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors

Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration

Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

Mayan rulers - un-sourced pages

Hello Simon Burchell,
Just want to know if you can have a look at about 23+ new un-sourced page,s list here. The newby author keeps trying to use WP pages as refs, despite me advising them they can't. You have already come across them at Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil re Copán

They are also using cites of the form <ref name="Martin_g"> Martin & Grube 2000, pp.198–199, unfortunately they have no more information about the, I infer, source book.

They added a lot of similarly sourced Meso-American related text to History of sport, in the edit here, which I have reverted.

I've started looking at this - at least some of this is cut and pasted from articles that I wrote. For example, Itza Kingdom has sections cut from Nojpetén and Spanish conquest of Petén, both of which I created. The cites have been copied across intact, but not the refs... Please refrain from repeatedly undoing other people's edits. Your edits on La Malinche indicate you may be engaged in an edit war. The three-revert rule (3RR) prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24-hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. Rather than reverting, please discuss disputed changes on the talk page. Thank you.

Firstly, I have not reverted 3 times. Secondly, you are adding unsupported assumptions. Marina was a Maya noblewoman who had become a slave. She had been educated in the Mesoamerican tradition where she would expect to be married off to a powerful noble in order to cement an alliance. An arranged noble marriage, as she would have interpreted it, does not make her a sex slave. Thirdly, if you don't want your edits changed, give a ref. You have a very strange view of what defines a slave and what doesn't. These well documented events that took place 500 years ago are now common knowledge to educated Mexicans. Who made you the undisputed expert of the relationship between Cortes and Malintzin? Cortes acknowledges she was his slave in his second letter to the King of Spain, as does Bernal Diaz del Castillo, a witness to the conquest of Mexico in "The True History of the Conquest of New Spain", a book he authored. Your weird assertions and attempts at WP:OWN don't change history. I'm going to wait a day or so, add some citation and I will revert again. In the meantime you should become thoroughly acquainted with the 3RR because if you break it, I will report you without hesitation. Oh, and by the way, stop posting on my talk page. Believe me, I am familiar with it - and it is 3 reverts in 24 hours. As for accusing me of ownership, that's laughable, as a look at the edit history of the article will show. And if you don't want me to post to your talk page, then don't post to mine. Please pay attention, I do not argue that she was not a slave, she clearly was - but claiming she was a sex slave is something else entirely. I've been (very slowly) trying to build up a good topic on the conquest of the Maya but still have a way to go before I nominate (Spanish conquest of Yucatán is pending GA review, I still need to cover Tabasco and Chiapas, and then write a synthesis of all the conquest articles as Spanish conquest of the Maya. After that I'll certainly give featured topic a go (I haven't looked at Featured Topics, but Good Topics need an umbrella article and sub-articles all at the Good Article or better - hence the overarching conquest of the Maya article).
