Nasnema

Nasnema is claiming (in a roundabout way) that he/she was hacked. Saying he was "on holiday" and was "greeted with all this" on his talk page when he got back.

If this is the case, and not an attempt to get out of trouble, I believe a temporary block needs to be put in place and a checkuser run on the account. - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:01, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

I believe you're right. Either this is a bad scheme and he deserves a block or he should be blocked to ensure his account is secure. Ryan Vesey 20:18, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
I'm trying to AGF on this and hoping it is something easily fixed by a checkuser, but my cynical side is telling me it is a scheme trying to get himself out of trouble. Either way though, I have looped you and Drmies in on this (since you both were involved in the ANI post) and I figure the CU will give us the final answer. - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:43, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Looks like the CU proved Nasnema wrong, check the ANI thread. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:29, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Opportunistic deletions

Hi Ryan, Mishae (talk · contribs) is over on my talk page explaining that you advised him to delete article history to save server space (see User talk:Mackensen#Re: Strange deletions for discussion). Would you be willing to drop in add context? Thanks, Mackensen (talk) 04:18, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, it was somewhere in his archives, but I might have just misunderstood him at that time.--Mishae (talk) 04:32, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Ryan, this is now at ANI and I have dug up the discussion there from April. Yngvadottir (talk) 05:59, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. Ynvadottir is correct that Mishae misunderstood me; I'm not sure what I could have said to give him the idea that he should have the article histories deleted. I feel like things were handled well at ANI. Ryan Vesey 15:02, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Teahouse talkback: you've got messages!

Broken reference names being removed from articles rather than fixed

The incident closed before I could comment further (edit conflict):

I was concerned at the number of edits that were removing references. I didn't realize how many problems there were when I left him the message. If it was only a few, it would be easy to go back and fix them. I don't know how to go back and undo the changes myself since there were so many edits, and so many of them are fine. Someone has just left a message for him saying it is OK to comment out edits, not remove them. But that is a problem also. Unless the error message occurs, how is the problem going to be fixed? AnomieBOT fixes most of these, but the broken reference has to be visible.
About wikiblame. Many of these problems occur when material is copied from one article to another (or transcluded!), leaving the full reference behind. So it doesn't matter if the named reference never was in the article. AnomieBOT manages to fix many of these with the Orphan Reference Fixer. I've gotten fairly good at finding those the bot doesn't.
So now we have a closed case and a user who has been told its OK to comment out problems. I know people are proud of being able to reduce backlog lists, but erasing content isn't the answer. StarryGrandma (talk) 22:15, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice

Thanks for the advice. I am going to take a break for several months of making new articles and instead edit them as you said. I will edit some shoe related articles. Thank you (Mathgenious989 (talk) 21:39, 17 October 2013 (UTC))

New editor in need of help

Hello, Ryan. I've just been trying to help a new editor called Mathgenious989, who has had a fairly bad initial experience of editing Wikipedia. He got annoyed with other editors, and got himself indefinitely blocked a little more than 24 hours after his first edit. I unblocked him to give him another chance. (I do that sometimes. Did you know that?) Since he was unblocked he has really been trying to do better, but he has seen several articles he has written deleted or nominated for deletion. I have posted some advice to his talk page, and invited him to ask me for more help, but I also wondered about giving him your name as a possible source of further help if needed. I have seen you being very helpful to new editors in the past, and I guess you are likely to be sympathetic to someone going through the sort of experience he has been going through. Do you mind if I drop him a note suggesting he could ask you for help when he needs it? Alternatively, of course, you could make the offer yourself, if you feel inclined to. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:51, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

I left him a note. Considering Category:Nike brands, I think one of his earlier deleted articles on Nike Hyperdunks could probably be written once he gets the hang of the place. Ryan Vesey 15:06, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I hope you didn't mind my asking ( I don't expect you did). He is certainly doing better than before the block, and it seems reasonable to hope that this will turn out to be yet one more case where unblocking results in a useful contributor, though he still has a lot of learning to do. That was an excellent comment on the talk page. Never thought of it that way. Thanks.172.250.31.151 (talk) 20:31, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Luxembourgian elections

Hi Ryan Vesey. It has been suggested you might be able to help me out. I have been involved in a "Requested move" in an attempt to change "Luxembourgian" to "Luxembourg" in the titles of articles relating to general elections, etc. See Talk:Luxembourgian general election, 2013. As the discussion has been underway since 21 October with general agreement in favour of the change, I wonder if you could help by closing the discussion. I will then be able to go ahead with the title changes as far as I can, although some of them may require assistance too as they have been moved backwards and forwards. --Ipigott (talk) 12:13, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Agrostis vinealis

As far as the above article goes I think it is good enough for a DYK nomination, what do you think? I even created a tag for it: Something like:

...that in Great Britain it grows with birches, pines, and oaks.
