Major League Baseball

Just passed as a GA, and I'm not making a peer review for it. The page said to ask the volunteers list, so, can you review it?--LAAFansign review 18:18, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for being able to review it. As for Randy Ruiz, I see IMatthew has claimed he will review, but hasn't yet. I'll ask him if I can take over. Anyway, when will the Red Sox lose a postseason series? :D --LAAFansign review 18:24, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
No worries. Good luck with Randy Ruiz. Cheers.--LAAFansign review 18:33, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

We should all copy each other's signatures on April Fools Day. Like, modify them and save them in our preferences for 24 hours. Imagine the chaos. Epic, absolutely epic. j.Delanoy (talk) 19:38, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

(That was me btw *doesn't want to get in trouble!!*) ——Possum (talk) 21:25, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
When I said copy, I meant insert your username into someone else's signature, not literally copy. So, if you were going to "forge" mine, you would put something like P.ossumgabsadds. (adding random words here so it doesn't look so weird when I sign). J.delanoygabsadds 21:48, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
I guess I've been watching Iridescent's page for too long, mimicking one's signature is common practice over there XD ——Possum (talk) 22:08, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

(outdent) Mimicking is fine, but what I was suggesting was doing it all across Wikipedia on April Fools Day, so if we were using exact copies, that would be somewhat evil. J.delanoygabsadds 22:12, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

That's the best idea I've heard all day! ;) iMatthew (talk) 22:16, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

ATTENTION watchlisters

I'm going to be renaming and usurp myself soon to RyanCross (talk · contribs)(hopefully), and once renamed, people will wonder how User:RyanCross is on their watchlists since they previously knew me as RyRy. Therefore, before renamed, I would like to know who is watchlisting my page. I've always wanted to know who was watchlisting my page. Some people did this kind of thing before, and I guess I should try it before I'm renamed. The list starts below:

General comment

Thanks for the attribution on your userpage. On another note, have you noticed that your contributions haven't moved over from RyRy (talk · contribs) yet? Just so you know, it may take a day or so. Sometimes these things happen, I still don't know why yet but there is precedent. Caulde 10:41, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome. Yes, I do know about this &ndash the exact same thing happened during my first rename. Though, previously, it took about a week rather than a day for my contributions to move to the new account name. User:Ryan Postlethwaite told me last time that he still has one edit that hasn't moved from his old account, and it has been a year! It mist likely just depends on how many contributions your old account has, and the more conrtibutions there are, the more time it takes for them to move after a rename. – RyanCross (talk) 16:05, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

  • Rudget to Caulde (I've been seen, quick, run!) Caulde 20:48, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
  • WBOSITG to Garden
  • You to RyanCross

I also noticed that recently. I also saw Cream change his user name (at least request it). I guess everyone wanted a new user name. Or they just got tired of their old one, I'm not sure. He didn't add it, Ryan

The I'm a PC DYK was mine. Jaakobou had nothing to do withit, and in fact tried to game the system to delay its entry. Not that its a capital offense or anything, but your congratulating him is something of an error. Of course, he's all too happy to take credit for a DYK he had nothing to do with, and has been chastised in WQA for gaming the system. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 03:24, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Review, at your request

Hi Ryan:

At your request, I've reviewed your recent contributions (roughly the last 250 of them). Here are some thoughts for you on things you do well, and a couple of areas where I'd like to see some more attention paid.

Overall, you have developed into a highly skilled contributor with fairly consistent good judgment. I am pleased with your development, and pleased with the obvious attention that you've paid to growing as a contributor.

Things you do very well:

  1. You seem to have a found a couple of defined niches (Baseball and DYK) and are doing well there. That sort of specialization is becoming more and more important as the wiki grows to be far beyond what any one person can track or handle.
  2. Good use of “minor” edit distinction
  3. Does well at formatting, that’s a great area for contribution
  4. Good use of edit summaries that are descriptive and relevant
  5. Good use of warnings, appropriately placed
  6. Appropriate use of non-admin closures for AfDs. Several of them say “(administrative closure)” in the edit summary – while technically correct in that it is an administrative action, I’d prefer to see language such as “non-admin closure”, which was used elsewhere.

A couple of areas where you could pay some extra attention: (it should be noted that none of these are "serious" deficiencies, but merely areas where I question a choice.

  1. at times, makes a series of smaller edits to an article, when one larger one might be better. I understand this is difficult because of the high volume of changes to some articles. Just keep this in mind.
  2. My personal preference is that non-admins not “clerk” the AIV board, as at [2] - however, I’m clear that I’m not the only one with an opinion on this. I would prefer that issues such as this remain up longer, in any case (this one lasted about two minutes after the previous comment).

In summary: you have grown a considerable amount in many areas, and you are to be commended for it. I think highly of your editing and the work you've done to get it to this point.

Respectfully submitted, - Philippe 16:44, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you very much, Philippe. :-) Now, where should I start...? The "(administrative closure)" edit summary was actually a mistake. You see, whatever I type in the edit summary box can automatically come back as the same edit summary if I type in it. I used "(administrative closure)" somewhere (probably at Simple English Wikipedia) and it automatically made that edit summary here while closed a few AfDs. I usually do "(non-administrative closure)", but since it was automatic, it didn't, and I forgot to change it. By the time I noticed I made a wrong edit summary to a few AfDs, I decided to leave it alone. Well, thank you again for the review, and I'll try to keep in mind what you said that could use some improvements. Regards, – RyanCross (talk) 00:07, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
I figured it was something like that. I know you don't intend to be vague or at all misleading. :-) - Philippe 03:10, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Rfa Spam

Thank you so much for your support on my RFA, which today passed unanimously. I will do my best to make sure that I don't let any of you down. If you ever need any help with anything, feel free to ask me, i'll be happy to. Thanks again--Jac16888 (talk) 17:17, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

I have replied to your comments. Thanks again for taking the time to make suggestions to improve the article. Alansohn (talk) 01:31, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Talk Page Vandalism

The vandalism in question occurs on my talk page. Apparently, some people don't like being told that unnecessary editing of this site is intolerable. Also, the vandal in question deleted system notifications left by a moderator from his own page. I dare say that someone needs to go over the rules of the site before being allowed to edit articles here again. CorinthMaxwell (talk) 02:32, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

There is no policy that states that users can't remove comments from their talk page, and I believe you're talking about this edit. If that IP vandalizes or makes unnecessary edits repeatedly after several warnings, send him/her to WP:AIV. Admins will take good care for him over there. Have a good day, – RyanCross (talk) 03:04, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Pentagon

I just noticed you edited the popular culture on the Pentagon article, and a few edits later, I removed the section. Apologies for that. I often make bold changes like that, and tend not to like the popular culture sections, which often seem like indiscriminate trivia. Though, sometimes they are okay. If you think it's worth including, that's fine with me, though the section would need improvement and good, reliable sources. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 04:42, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

I have no problems with your removal. Anything that would benefit the article is fine with me. I'll try to do some copyediting from time to time on the article if I can. You are free to revert any edit I make that seems unnecessary or if it is not benefiting the article. As for you, so far, well done. – RyanCross (talk) 04:46, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I'll try to get this article improved over the weekend, and anything you can do to help would be appreciated. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 04:51, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Shrewsberry DYK request

Hi! I hope that I fixed the Wild Bill Shrewsberry article to your satisfaction for DYK consideration. I've pretty much written all my previous articles with the old style guidelines which didn't include the reference links and I was actually unsure as to how they worked. Again, here's hoping that I did it right. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 08:27, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

DYK help?

Hi there, RyanCross. I just wrote an article thru the WP:AFC process, and it was accepted, it's called Cal Cooper. He's a baseball player from the 1940s that only played one inning of one game in 1948. I think he makes a really interesting article, and I was thinking about bringing it to DYK, a place I recently discovered to put new articles. However, I can't figure out that page, and I noticed your name there as someone that seems to do a lot of good work with DYK and with baseball. Could you do me a favor? Could you look at my article Cal Cooper and let me know if you think it would be a good article for DYK? I don't know if its long enough, but I think a really good "hook" would be "did you know that, in 1948, Cal Cooper only pitched one inning of major league baseball for his career?" or something like that. Let me know what you think. My IP changes all the time, so if you could please respond here if you can help me, I'll check back here from time to time. Thanks for reading and I hope you can help me out! The article has four references. 75.161.233.85 (talk) 18:14, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Yep, it looks good from what I can see. I expanded it a bit though because it didn't yet meet 1500+ characters like what is needed for DYKs. I've already nominated the article. My nomination can be found at Template_talk:Did_you_know#Articles_created.2Fexpanded_on_October_17 towards the bottom. If you have any other suggestions for the article or the hook, please don't hesitate to tell me about it so we can work it out to make improvements. Hopefully, it should appear on the Main Page in the "Did you know..." section in several days once it has been reviewed and approved. Thank you for your help on the article and your contributions to Wikipedia! – RyanCross (talk) 00:08, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Excellent! I was just spiffing up the article again, and noticed that you'd done some work! I just changed a couple of more things. I'll go check out the nom at DYK. Thanks a million for your help! 75.161.233.85 (talk) 00:10, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
No problem at all. It was my pleasure. Hey, if you ever want a baseball-related stub article to become a DYK, just leave me a note and I'll see if I can fulfill your request. I hope the nomination was alright for you. Thanks! – RyanCross (talk) 00:15, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
I sure will! Boy, did I find the right guy! I added my thoughts on the DYK nomination page, and I like the first hook you thought of the best (I don't like the Navy/WWII one). How will I know if it gets accepted? If it was accepted, how do I find out when it will be on the main page? I want to make sure I'm online then. If I do any other baseball stuff, I'll be sure to get your help! 75.161.233.85 (talk) 00:54, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
And your comments are greatly appreciated and welcomed. Well, you will know when it has been accepted when you see the following icon below the nomination:
It usually is a random time when it gets to the Main Page. Whenever another editor moves the hook to Template:Did you know/Next update, it will be ready to be set for the next update to appear on the Main Page. But like I said, it is random when it is moved to the next update, and whatever is moved to the nest update is decided by other editors. I can move hooks to the next update, but I can't move my own as it is against the DYK rules. I haven't even seen all of my DYKs I've worked on appear on the Main Page myself. Hooks stay on the Main Page for a minimum of six hours, so you will have some time to see it probably depending on when you are online. – RyanCross (talk) 01:12, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Cool. Thanks for the info, I hope to catch it there if it gets accepted. I'm online at pretty random times, so I'll check it often! Thanks again for your help! 75.161.233.85 (talk) 01:16, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
You're welcome. By the way, do you have a Wikipedia account? It would be nice for someone like you to have an account and for you to become a Wikipedian. It is free and there are some benefits to having an account. Just click here to create one! – RyanCross (talk) 01:21, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the invite, but I already have an account. I actually like editing as an IP instead, even though it's a lot more difficult to get things created, I like the challenge. It's nice when someone treats an IP fairly, and you've done exactly that. You didn't just assume I was a vandal. Some people just assume all IP editors are here to cause problems, but you don't, that's good. See you around, 75.161.233.85 (talk) 01:31, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Retirement

Since you've known me for a while, I might as well tell you. I've decided to leave Wikipedia. All the best, --LAAFansign review 00:29, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

I was a bit shocked when I heard that... Why the retirement out of nowhere? – RyanCross (talk) 00:33, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
I just felt it was time. Again, all the best.--LAAFansign review 01:10, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
I've known you for months, and it is sad to have you leave all of a sudden. I hope you have a good life. You're work is greatly appreciated, and you have certainly helped Wikipedia with your DYKs, GAs, FLs, and all the other articles you have worked on. The best work I thought you have done was getting Major League Baseball to GA status. Well, I hope you can come back some time to visit us. Take care, and I'll miss you around Wikipedia. Respectively yours, – RyanCross (talk) 01:18, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Wilfrid Laurier DYKs

Hi Ryan, could you possibly remove the Max Blouw DYK you just added to the next update page? We already have another Wilfrid Laurier University hook earlier, which looks redundant; so one of them probably has to go or else it looks kind of odd. One of those hooks could just wait till the next time around. :-) Thanks! JamieS93 02:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Oh, sorry for the delay. I was offline for a bit and didn't get your message until about 40 minutes later. I see you reverted my edit yourself, so everything is settled now. Thanks for the note! – RyanCross (talk) 02:42, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I was just coming here to let you know that I'd done it. No problem,  :-) JamieS93 02:45, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

DYK for Todd Friel

On 22 October, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Todd Friel, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Upcoming World Development contest

Penubag has been hard at work developing awards for this project. He has completed a very professional looking medal, and is almost done with a trophy that is truly awesome - both of these awards are visually stunning.

I and a few others have been working steadily on the country outlines that will be the focus of the contest - an outline for every country of the world! They're shaping up nicely. So far, 28 of them have been moved to article space - these aren't complete, but they are complete enough to be made available for readers to benefit from them. The rest of the set still includes temporary data that was generated by template (because it matched most but not all of the countries), and before those lists can be moved to article space, all the temporary data needs to be checked for accuracy, and if incorrect it needs to be replaced with correct information.

The effort on the lists has been on 3 fronts:

  1. Working on the lists in article space to complete them so they will be good examples for editors working on the rest of the set (during the contest).
  2. Adding or correcting other data (fixing redlinks, filling in blanks, etc.). The main type of work participants in the contest will be doing. The reason we're doing this is to get a feel for it, to develop the fastest methods for each type of task, etc.
  3. Improving the overall design and implenting changes on all 247 pages, whether in article space or not.

There has been some opposition to us running the contest based on edit counts or iterations. The concern is that we should reward quality work and not quantity, for fear of crappy edits done quickly without thought just to earn an award. I pointed out that the collection of pages are drafts in the Wikipedia namespace (therefore posing no danger to article space) and that most of the work needs to be done with power tools like AWB and Linky (which are specifically designed for repetitive volumnous work), but the reply was that we shouldn't set the precedent of rewarding barnstars for numerically-based tasks, and implied the threat of continuously MfD'ing the contest if we attempted to do so (like they did with the Awards Center - I was very surprised and disappointed that participants didn't step up to defend it). So we need to be careful in determining what exactly the awards will represent, and how they will be awarded.

Since rewarding iterations (passes with AWB on all of the pages in the set) are out, we really don't need the globe-in-stand (award we were working on) anymore. Two awards should suffice.

Once we get started with the contest, I'd like to kick the whole thing off with a round of medals for those dedicated few who have worked hard on the project so far.

What do you think of all of this?

Your comments and suggestions are most welcome.
