Puzzled/Pike article

Dear Richard, I don't understand your frustration. It is rare to find others interested in editing the same article, when it happens, I always think of it as a very lucky event. The more editors, the better the end article; after all, Wikipedia is build on collaboration and working with others. If there is disagreement about anything, we can talk it out, but I am not seeing signs of such a disagreement in your article history. See also: Wikipedia:Ownership of articles. Lastly, I'd suggest you read up on how to archive a talk page at Wikipedia:How to archive a page. Just deleting content is often seen as not very nice (to those who left you messages prior). PS. Hello, Richard. You did a good job adding new information to the Ernest Pike article. Note that in some of the paragraphs, you repeated the same ref over and over, when the whole paragraph, or consecutive sentences (or even short phrases), were referenced to the same, or a couple of, references. So, you don't need to keep restating the same ref. Readers can see, for example, that in the first paragraph under "Operatic recordings", all of the references are to one source. The paragraph had the ref six times, and I have reduced it to four times, which is still overkill. I also fixed a few technical issues, like your heading levels. I think we can be confident that 21 Dec 1903 was the date of the premiere. The Times in its review of the proceedings published on 22 Dec. specifically says that the opening night was "yesterday". Hi Just what is the problem with this label? It is a picture of a record that is over 100 years old that I have in my possession and have taken a picture of. The original label design is out of copyright and the copyright for this picture is owned by me and released for free use to Wikipedia. Nor can I find any discussion to join as claimed. I see no claim of age on the file page. There is only one license field given - obviously for the photograph - nothing for the object of the photograph. The discussion link works OK and links to Wikipedia:Possibly_unfree_files/2013_May_5#File:Stanley_kirkby_tipperary_01.jpg. If it's very old and the designer is totally unknown then it will probably need something like {{PD-EU-no author disclosure}} and {{PD-US-1923-abroad|pdsource=yes}} adding - but that choice is yours - or decide from WP:ICT/All  Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 20:21, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for your reply. It is very old and with original design unknown and belongs to a short-lived record company. I have added the licensing you suggest for this reason as the original designer in that company over 100 years ago is not known and with regards to the US it was published prior to 1923. I hope that this is OK and will prevent deletion. Or is there anything else I have to do now? Richard J Myers (talk)

Just looked in briefly. I'll be very pleased to go over the article. I've never heard of Kirkby, and I rather think I shall enjoy this. I see from the G&S bible Rollins and Witts that Kirkby, unlike Baker and Pike, did not take part (or at any rate is not credited under his own name or any pseudonym you mention in your article) in any of the HMV recordings of G&S made under the direction of Rupert D'Oyly Carte from 1918 onward. One wonders why. Be that as it may, here are my comments on the article:

• Lead
  • "He sang oratorio" – not much evidence of it in the main text
  • "amongst" – I often wonder what this word has that the simple "among" hasn't
  • "He was a founder member of a British record company" – this rather hangs in the air – I'd either give the company's name here or leave mention of the matter until the main text.
• Early years and personal life
  • "Manchester, England, UK" – I think most of your readers will know that England is in the UK
  • I've just been roughed up about my excessive use of quotation marks, and I confess to being over-addicted. You too, I'd say: I don't think any of the quotation marks in the first para add anything, and they rather break the flow of your prose.
  • "Vocalist" – I have always thought this was a kind term for a singer who can't really sing: a bit harsh here, surely? "Soloist" might be more the mark, perhaps.
  • "The Pierrot's" – really possessive rather than plain plural?
  • "They were to have three sons" – I never know quite what this construction has that the plain past tense – "they had three sons" – hasn't
  • "his profession was given as that of a vocalist" – which answers my question above, I suppose. Hmm.
• Stage career
  • "soon evolved, for example" – stronger stop than a comma needed here. I'd go for a semicolon, but others might argue for a colon
  • "at the Oval" – you should be consistent in capitalising, or not, the definite article in the titles of venues
  • "summer season returning" – I think I'd put a comma after "season" to help the reader's eye along
  • "ragtime" – I know we aren't supposed to put blue-links within quotations, but most of us do it from time to time, and I'd be tempted here
  • "double act, however" – perhaps "though" rather than "however". If sticking with the latter a stronger stop than the comma is needed. Comma fine with "though".
  • "Brian Rust" – blue link wanted
  • "called: Apple Sauce" – colon not wanted here
  • Not clear why the [sic] after the quote. (Doubtless just me being dense.)
• Popular recordings
  • First para – I'd be inclined to bundle the four references into one, but if you disagree you ought to have them appearing in numerical order, with Rust first. Same applies to first sentence of last para of section
  • "three hours work" – three hours' work, perhaps.
  • "well over two hundred tracks" – words rather than numbers here, unlike your usual practice
  • "the: Beta" – another unexpected colon that I'd be inclined to blitz
• Early years
  • "usually as Stanley Kirkby" – perhaps "usually under his own name"? And surely the list you then provide, if is is representative of his output, rather knocks on the head the idea that he sang more often than not under his real name.
• Operatic recordings
  • "the Yeomen of the Guard" (second mention) – the uncapitalised and unitalicised "the" looks rather odd.
• Death
  • "as Stanley Kirkby" – professional pseudonyms notwithstanding, do we need this here?

Verifiability

I have always taken it as axiomatic – and nobody has ever suggested otherwise to me – that quoting the matrix number or catalogue number of a 78 record is adequate citation. Headings/recordings

Hello, Richard. As I said, you have done some very nice work on this article. Recordings is a major aspect of his career. The G&S recordings are just some of his recordings. No reason for so many Level 2 headings (indeed, the article has too many headings). The stubby one-line section called Death should not be a heading - after all, you don't have a heading for Birth. What should go in the LEAD section is an overview of the most important things about Kirby's life and career. If "Are You Lonesome Tonight" was Kirby's biggest hit, then I would put it there. If not, the fact that he did it before Elvis is not that important to his (Kirby's) article, but it should be mentioned (if you can cite a WP:Reliable source) in the article on Are You Lonesome Tonight (song). Kirkby Lunn

Success on the Lunn connection, I'm pleased to say. There was only one source I could find, but it looks fireproof to me, being from a respectable source and unequivocal in its statements:

"Stanley Kirkby, himself rejected for the army, is one of four Manchester brothers, two of whom are with the colours, and he is the cousin of Madame Kirkby Lunn."

Concert party -v- concert-party

Interesting. I am emphatically not an expert on hyphens (in Plain Words Gowers quotes someone as saying "If you take hyphens seriously you will surely go mad") but I must say that "concert party performances" without the hyphen looks right to me. On the other hand it would, I suppose, be reasonable to maintain that in this context "concert party" is not really a noun but is effectively an attributive adjective and therefore to be hyphenated. On the other other hand I could just follow Gowers's advice and go mad. I'd leave it as it is, I think. Furthermore Wikipedia is patrolled by a most skilful editor, the incomparable Chris the speller, who goes about (inter multa alia) removing hyphens that shouldn't be there and inserting them where they have been wrongly omitted.
