Images

Good idea, I've added the images. Copying an image is really simple, though - just edit the article you're copying from, look for the "[[Image:blahblah.jpg|thumb|right|Caption text blah blah]]" markup in the relevant section, and copy and paste the whole thing to the new article. It would be better if we could get different and more illustrative pictures for each article, but there's no problem in reusing an image across several articles. WikiProject Life on Mars

Hi Police,Mad,Jack:

I have a couple of questions regarding WikiProject Life on Mars which I hope you will do your best to answer.

Would the exclusive short story based on the show written by Matthew Graham for The Mail on Sunday over Christmas 2007 (the story itself has no title, but appears to be known as Life on Mars Christmas Special) have any place in WikiProject Life on Mars? The story is set at Christmas 1973, and appears to be set after the end of the television series -- as well as implying that Sam Tyler did not die soon after he returned permanently to 1973, but went instead into an irreversible coma in which he survived until at least the end of 2006. That's the theory I worked out from reading the story, anyway...!

Does WikiProject Life on Mars also plan to cover the books Life on Mars: The Official Companion by Guy Adams and Lee Thompson, published by Pocket Books in 2006, and Life on Mars: The Rules of Modern Policing - 1973 Edition by 'DCI Gene Hunt' (in reality, Guy Adams), published by Bantam Press in 2007?

Thanks for your interest in and contributions to law-enforcement related articles on Wikipedia. I recently reviewed Prison cell and found that much of the article seem to be your contributions. That is an ambitious undertaking! However, I am a bit troubled by the quality of your contribution. Wikipedia is accessible to all, thus should be written in such a manner that the author's message is clear. Your contributions on Prison cell contains several run-on sentences, rampant unnecessary capitalization, and information that may have local accuracy, but lacks validity on a grander scale. Each error distracts the reader and reduces the article's usefulness. It is apparent from your user page that you have a great interest in Wikipedia - as such, I would ask you to pay more attention to the quality of your submissions and not edit articles unless your edits meet Wikipedia's quality standards. It may be best to have someone else review your text before posting. Citing sources

Yeah, citing a book is fine - just give as much detail as you can, including the page number. It's probably easiest to just cut and paste the template at Template:Cite_book, and fill in the details as appropriate. Ray Carling edits

They do make it a better article. What was there before I edited (and what has now reppeared) is poorly written and will make little or no sense to someone who has not watched the episodes in question. But if you think the article deserves to be written in the style of a concussed G.C.S.E. student, go ahead! Perhaps Life On Mars doesn't deserve any better. I, however, think it does.

Deletion of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes Articles

I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about. I have never deleted Life on Mars (an article about the possibility of life on Mars) or Ashes to Ashes (a disambiguation page), nor the articles on the David Bowie songs Life on Mars? and Ashes to Ashes (song). Okay, I see. I didn't delete any articles, I deleted four images, Image:Annie Cartwright.jpg, Image:Chris Skelton.jpg, Image:Ray carling.jpg, and Image:Sam tyler.jpg. All four of these images had been tagged since February 29 as having disputed fair-use rationales. The tag in all four cases read, "This is a cropped screenshot of the BBC Life on Mars website, which includes the background pattern of the page. It is not from a 'press kit or similar source, for the purpose of reuse by the media'." —Angr ^{If you've written a quality article...} 20:48, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Links are still links, even without the brackets - Wikipedia detects the "http://" and turns the whole URL into a link. User warnings

Sorry to bring this up again, but you seem to have forgotten it. When issuing a warning to a user with no previous warnings, you should start with a level one warning and progress it from there. Going straight to a level three is an unhelpful misuse of the warning system - not only does it discourage good faith editors, but the first warning level often explains what the problem is (the third level warning assumes that the editor has already had a first and second level one, so doesn't repeat it in detail).

You should also sign your warnings so that the editor can contact you if they have any questions (and so that they realise it's a message from another editor, rather than an automated Wikipedia alert).

Even if you're pointing out people's mistakes in your corrective edit summaries, you should still start with a level one warning and work your way up. I think in some cases deletion can be necessary, because there are some characters that are just so minor they'll never satisfy Wikipedia's notability criteria, but with Luke being a major character in a much publicized BBC drama, I totally agree there's room for improvement there. Irritatingly, I completely missed it earlier, but the BBC Press Office releases are so detailed for HolbyBlue, I always feel I know exactly what's going to happen anyway - oh, but Robert died tonight, didn't he? Vandal warnings

Sorry to bring this up again, but you still seem to be issuing level four warnings against new users, without going through the first two or three levels. I appreciate that vandals are annoying and can sometimes seem quite blatant, but a level four warning is only appropriate in extreme situations. Many new users delete pages or add gibberish into articles while getting a feel for Wikipedia, and we shouldn't scare them off with a "stop right now or you will be banned" warning.

You're also still failing to sign your vandal-warning comments, giving the user no sense of who has warned them, and who they should talk to about it. It's important to put your signature at the end. Thanks. --McGeddon (talk) 16:59, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

I really don't think you understand how the vandalism warning system works. A level-four-im warning should only be issued for extreme bad faith edits where the vandal needs to be stopped dead in their tracks, such as being in the process of spamming a link across a hundred articles, using some technical exploit to damage Wikipedia, or being the sockpuppet of a known, repeat vandal. It's not for kids who write their name in the middle of a single article as their first edit.

For minor graffiti like this, we should assume good faith and see how the user reacts to a polite level one warning - most will stop anyway when they realise that they're being watched, and a slim few will apologise for their test edits and go on to become constructive Wikipedia editors. I'm not "defending the vandals", as you put it, I'm defending the slim minority who are just making test edits and will calm down if warned politely. We shouldn't bite the newcomers.

Please make sure you understand how the vandalism warning system works before continuing to use it. And please sign your warnings - perhaps your thinking is that if you don't sign the comment then the vandal won't come and vandalise your user page, but you're also cutting out apologies and questions from valuable newcomers. --McGeddon (talk) 09:44, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, he could be ill, or on holiday, or an actual vandal, but he could also have been genuinely driven away solely by your inappropriate usage of a level four warning, which should be a sobering thought. I have just read a DREADFUL book published in 1957 by John Dickson Carr. The large print version ISBN is 0-7089-4606-2.

Detective John Cheviot, following a car accident, finds himself back in 1829 as a gentleman named John Cheviot who is trying to make the newly formed police force be viewed as a respectable body.

He applies his modern knowledge to the solution of a murder mystery and gets into lots of difficulty with the customs of the time and his knowledge of what is going to happen.

He is murdered in the past and returns to his present day persona to find that his 1829 mistress is in fact his present day wife.

The parallels are rather striking, I think!

Please stop giving new Wikipedia users unsigned level-4 warnings, Jack. You said you'd stop, but you've just done it again here, giving a new user a bad-faith level four warning after their first and only edit was an innocent question in the body of an article. This is exactly the situation that merits a hello-and-welcome Template:Uw-talkinarticle template - not a final, unsigned warning.

Please read WP:VAND. Editors should try to start with a level-one warning, and may choose to move up to a level two or three if they're confident that it's bad-faith vandalism. A level four should only be issued in an extreme situation, such as an active spammer, a sockpuppet or someone maliciously moving articles around.

None of your level four warnings have been for an extreme situation. You've given one out for someone removing whitespace and a duplicate entry from a list, and you've now given another for asking a question which you feel a Bill viewer should know the answer to (to take five seconds to assume good faith, maybe they were using Wikipedia to check something that a friend had told them). At the strongest, Wikipedia would only encourage a level three warning - at its weakest, we have the completely appropriate Template:uw-delete and Template:uw-talkinarticle.

In both cases you've decided not to sign the comment to make your life easier, because you're afraid the vandal might vandalise your page in response, and don't seem to care that they might be an innocent user who'd have a question and wouldn't know who to ask. Presumably the level four warning is to save you the effort of having to issue further warnings if they ignore you and repeat their vandalism. This just isn't on, Jack - you shouldn't risk harming the Wikipedia project to make your own activity on it slightly easier. --McGeddon (talk) 18:36, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

You're right, I don't know what your motives for assuming bad faith and giving level-four warnings to new Wikipedia users, but you've said on my talk page that you aren't signing your warnings "so no attacks are brought against me". I appreciate it's to spare you the time of deleting any abuse on your talk page rather than being "scared" by it, but it's still inappropriate - users (including people who might end up being assigned that IP address by their ISP three months down the line) should be given a clear indication that the warning came from a human being who they can apologise or appeal to.

There were claims in the media that the Met doctored some released photos to try to heighten any ressemblance. Although I'm certainly willing to answer any questions, I'm probably not the best person to act as admin coach, since — although I do have admin status — I tend to focus in fairly specialised areas, and there are large chunks of Wikipedia I don't really spend any time with. Also, given the nature of my work, I'm quite often away or busy for long periods of time; there's also a conflict of interest situation (both on Wikipedia and in the real world) if I were to edit and/or discuss at length many of the articles you work on.

Of the current coaches, the ones I think would best suit you are Balloonman or Pedro. I think LaraLove would also suit you very well, but she's in Texas so (I'm guessing) would probably never be online at the same time as you.

When you go for RFA, the participants will generally look at your history for the last couple of months. A few things I'd recommend doing now — to make sure any problems are well in the past by the time of the RFA - are:

1. At the moment, your edit summary usage is unacceptably low. I'd strongly recommend ticking "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" under "Editing" in your preferences;

1. While by-and-large you've worked in a reasonable variety of areas, you've virtually no Wikipedia Talk edits — only 39, and all but 15 of them are to WikiProject pages. Because Wikipedia Talk is where policy is discussed, it's good (although not essential) to be able to demonstrate you've participated in policy discussions so you understand how consensus is formed, and also to show that you understand the high levels of abuse that admins get subjected to;

1. You've a lot of userboxes on your user page; while there's no policy at all against this, you might want to trim them down quite substantially. The people who vote at WP:RFA tend to be strongly against people using Wikipedia as a social networking site, and a lot of information about yourself — as opposed to what you bring to Wikipedia — can (fairly or not) swing people against you. In particular, I'd get rid of "This user is not a Wikipedia administrator, but would like to be one someday", which a lot of people hate; adminship on Wikipedia isn't any kind of promotion, it just means a few more technical powers.

1. Although you've created a fair few articles, some of them are a bit messy (as you can see by the assorted cleanup tags people have put on them), and none of them are very long. As one question that is always asked at RFA is "What is your best contribution to Wikipedia", I'd suggest picking one or two and expanding them into long, informative articles. They don't have to be masterpieces of writing, but they ideally should: cover everything a casual reader without specialist knowledge who stumbled on the article would be interested in knowing; have inline citations for each piece of information; be from a neutral point of view. Have a look at the (now slightly out of date) article I wrote on Central Communications Command for the sort of thing I mean in a police-related context; I freely admit that it's messy and deathly dull, but if you didn't know anything about the subject, it tells you everything a non-specialist is likely to want to know.

1. Stop giving out level 4 warnings unless the vandal has already received earlier warnings or the vandalism is really serious! Because AGF is part of the fourth of the Five pillars, even if you're perfect in every other way, an RFA will be shot down in flames unless you show you're willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, as nobody will trust you with the protect & block buttons. I'd strongly recommend making a habit of reading WP:AN, WP:ANI and WT:RFA every day, even though they're generally dull as ditchwater, to get a feeling for the way admins "behave" on Wikipedia.

1. You've very little experience in deletions, and deletion policy is such a core theme that people will expect you to have demonstrated that you understand it. Read (and make sure you understand) WP:CSD and WP:DEL as people will ask you questions about them. Read through the the current deletion discussions whenever you get the chance, to see what sort of things are discussed; once you feel confident that you understand policy — but not until then — start to join in at least the occasional discussion there.

1. The same few questions are asked at RFA each time. Read the questions-and-answers at the most recent successful RFAs to get a feel for what questions you're going to be asked, and what the people who answered them successfully said.

Hope all that helps! Sorry it's a bit long-winded... When you do find an admin coach, I'd suggest you point this conversation out to them, so they can see what I've already told you (and disagree if necesary). One thing I can't emphasise enough is don't nominate yourself for RFA; self-nominations almost always fail. PMJ and Coaching

Hi PMJ,

I've just taken a close look at your edits and at this point in time, I can't accept you as a coachee. I generally target coachees who I feel are 2-3 months away from running for adminship and who have concerns that I believe I can help with. At this time, I am not sure if you are 2-3 months away or if I would be able to assist you. There are issues that you need to address. Most of this you've already heard, but you seemed reluctant to make the changes. For example, when McGeddon tried to help, you got defensive (even rude.) He correctly challenged your use of level 4 warnings and how that can chase off otherwise solid users. He also talked about how you need to sign your warnings. You continued to have issue with these two points until an admin reiterated these concerns. That admin then gave you a number of solid ideas on his talk page. Many of these ideas don't appear to have been worked on. This leaves me wondering how you would respond to my "homework" assignments... especially the one's where I would be challenging you to explore wikipedia more.

Then there is your attitude. Right now I see a lot of edits from you that are a little overly hostile, for example: [1][2][3] There were a lot more, but your manner is overly agressive and I don't believe that it is indicative of what we are looking for in admins. I would strongly advise you to listen to the guidance issued by Iridescent and McGeddon. I would also try to watch what you say and how you say it. Words like crappy and what the hell are not things we want to see. Not only do you need to Assume Good Faith, but you need to communicate in a manner that isn't likely to escalate issues.

Now, I may be completely off, but civility and communication skills are the two things that I look for most in potential coachees. Everything else I can work with, but when I question a potential coachees civility and patience, then I have to wonder. I do wish you the best and would be happy to review you again in a few months. One other thing, start responding to people on the page where the discussion began. It is a real pain in the butt to figure out conversations when there is only one side of the discussion. This is particularly true when there are multiple people commenting and responding on the same thread. I have another coachee, whom I almost rejected, because by reading just his talk page, he looked like he had major problems. It was only by reading the responses that I realized what was going on. If he left his page the way it was, he might have found it harder to pass an RfA in the future. Some of your interactions about your activities (especially when you are being criticized) would be a lot easier to follow if they were all on the same page.Balloonman (talk) 07:24, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

I wanted to apologize for editing your page against your wishes, but I also want to tell you why I did that.
Someone recently added Category:WikiLove templates to various templates, such as Template:Smile, Template:Cookie, and several others.
However, the person who added the category to the templates neglected to put the category inside <noinclude> tags, so the category got added whenever someone used those templates. Since people subst those templates, merely changing the template would not remove the category from all those talk pages, (which are certainly not wikilove templates) so I used AutoWikiBrowser to correct this problem.
I will not remove the category again, but I don't think your talk page belongs in it.
I hope my explanation is adequate.

We do not delete articles for things which appear to be notable just because they have only one reference. There is no requirement for more unless the reference fails to show sufficient notability. The thing to do rather is to tag "improvereferences" -- or,even better, to look for them yourself. Deletion is the last resort, per WP:Deletion policy. DGG (talk) 01:28, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

First of all I would like to thank you very much for attempting to nominate me, and I am glad I have had such an affect on you like the one you stated. At the moment I am refining my edits so a coach would be happy to do exactly that with me, and hopefully one day I will be an Administrator but I need more time to refine my edits and generally build up a good rapport as the selection process is stringent. Criminal Investigation Department‎

Hi. I'm concerned about a couple of things going on in this article related to you:

You've reverted a change once and twice. The editor 81.134.13.35 (talk · contribs) clearly stated why he/she removed the sentence which was because it doesn't make sense and wasn't cited. The user was correct on both comments.

Then you reported the editor to AIV for what should have been clear to you was a good faith edit. Both Tan and I felt this was not vandalism. The user clearly has not been warned appropriately as an IP editor either. The editor hasn't been active in 2 days.

Upon looking further into this article, this does not appear to be vandalism, rather a good faith edit. I suspect the term applies to both Indian and UK police.

Kew Constabulary

I've reverted this edit to Kew Constabulary, as it contained some glaring inaccuracies.

1. There is no such thing as a "Police Force" in the UK and has not been for some years; "Force" in the legal context has a specific meaning which no longer applies to police services.
2. "Special" also has a specific meaning in law enforcement, and it's a meaning that does not apply to KC, which is not a "Special Police Force" but a fully-fledged constabulary (albeit a small one).
3. KC is responsible for policing Kew Gardens, rather than for law enforcement. (Picky I know, but this article was carefully worded.) The force areas of KC and the Metropolitan Police Service overlap, and the MPS has ultimate responsiblity for law enforcement.
4. The "while on duty" is not correct; under UK law, as police are office holders rather than employees, they have police powers whether on duty or not provided they are in the area to which their warrant applies (in the case of most constabularies, this is England/Wales, Scotland or NI; in KC's case it's within a 3 mile radius of the gardens).
5. There was no "POV" to the article it was written. I assume you're referring to the "rarely use their powers" by this; that is not a value judgement but a statement of fact — by longstanding agreement, any significant policing activity in the gardens is provided by the MPS (as stated in the article).
6. KC are not responsible for policing the "immediate surrounding area", as you state. Their responsibility is within the gardens; the "three mile radius" is to allow them to pursue suspects out of their force area if necessary.

I know this was a good faith edit, but please be careful with things like this. Although the article was uncited, all the above facts are easily checkable. I appreciate this is about as low priority an article as it's possible to get, but it's still important to check facts. – iridescent 15:16, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
