Nicolas Rossolimo

Hi, I gather from an earlier edit summary that you are a relative of Nicolas Rossolimo. Your first-hand knowledge is potentially very useful, we may even be able to bring the article up to Good Article status. The problem with wikipedia is we need to be able to verify any assertion we make, and cite a source; simply claiming firsthand knowledge isn't enough. For example, you may know firsthand that Rossolimo was an Orthodox Christian but until I found the reference to him being buried in the R.O.C. cemetery in New Jersey in Chess Life we couldn't really justify including the Orthodox categories in the article. Even now I haven't seen any source suggesting that he was particularly religious; biographical articles about him don't usually discuss religion.

Anyway as a family member you must have access to a lot of documents, newspaper clippings etc that most of us don't have. If you can cite some of these in the article that would be a big step towards improving it. Let's start with the R.O.C. - was he devoutly religious or just "culturally" Orthodox? Any references for this other than firsthand knowledge?

One other thing, I found this Russian language article on Rossolimo. It looks potentially useful but it states as a fact that he was killed by muggers, whereas from what I understand the exact circumstances of his death are unclear and subject to speculation. This makes me think the article may be unreliable - could you give it a quick fact check and let me know what you think? Regards, MaxBrowne (talk) 23:55, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

To MaxBrowne -- The Russian article might seem at first "interesting", but the biographical portion is riddled with inaccuracies, errors, speculation, and outright nonsense. In particular, IGM Nicolas Rossolimo was not killed by muggers, but suffered an accidental death following a fall on his way home from the "Rossolimo Chess Studio" in Greenwich Village late at night.

OK I'll treat that article as unreliable. Another thing I noticed in it is something about him changing his name from Verukov; I don't believe this for one second, it appears to have originated in usenet posts by Sam Sloan. The stuff about his problem compositions is interesting though. Do you know how many of them he published, what years, and in what magazines? MaxBrowne (talk) 04:42, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

The name "Verukov" is utter nonsense. The family name, on his father's side, has been "Rossolimo" for centuries. There is even a street in Moscow -- Ulitsa Rossolimo -- named after his uncle, Dr. Grigory Ivanovitch (1860-1928), who was a very famous neurologist and psychiatrist, and a professor at Moscow University.

Philip Austin, first, when on your talk page, you go to the "edit" tab on the top right section of the page. When you do, scroll down, and look at my response to you. You'll see a colon (:) before my comment, which slightly indents my response, indicating that it is a response to the comment before it. If you were to reply to this response, you would put (::) before your comment, or two colons, indicating that it is a response to the previous comment, which had a (:). You'll receive a notification of the replies up at the very top of the page, next to your username. To reply to a comment posted on your talk page, go to that section by scrolling down, and finding the section enclosed in question marks (==Like this==). Go below the comment you want to reply to and type (:), and then your response. I hope that answers your question! Circular references

Thanks for contributing to the article Alexander N. Rossolimo ‎. However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that material must be verifiable and attributed to reliable sources. You have recently used citations which copied, or mirrored, material from Wikipedia. This leads to a circular reference and is not acceptable. Most mirrors are clearly labeled as such, but some are in violation of our license and do not provide the correct attribution. Please help by adding alternate sources to the article you edited!
