Major gap in Japanese-American history

Hi, Nihonjoe. I'm currently in Wiki-crisis/retirement mode, and not editing here. But I came across what I think is a major issue which touches on your area of editing interest. There is no real article on the Nisei (2nd generation Japanese Americans). The "Nisei" page is a redirect to Japanese American service in World War II (just one small aspect of this generation), and even this article has been recently stubbed down when material (such as the quote from MacArthur's chief ("The Nisei saved countless Allied lives and shortened the war by two years.") could have been easily sourced instead. Here for example. About the nisei generation, just a quick Amazon search brings up dozens of books on this generation of Japanese Americans... Even Encylcopedia Britannica has an article on the subject! Something seems to be clearly wrong here... OK, hope you're doing well, and I'll retreat back into retirement. Regards. Need some help with a dab page for Shōjo

Hi, Nihonjoe -- can I ask you for some help in setting up a real dab page for Shōjo, shojo, and so on? It used to be a simple dab page, but (as you know, of course) some of us have been adding to it, and now we need a real shōjo‎ dab page. Can you help? If you can answer over there at Talk:Shōjo‎. Thanks a great deal. Timothy Perper (talk) 16:33, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Akiko Hatsu

I have nominated Akiko Hatsu, an article you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Akiko Hatsu. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 05:44, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

GReeeeN --> Greeeen?

Hi Joe, and apologies for the message out of the blue! I was hoping to get your opinion on the matter of the article for Greeeen, and the fact one User:Ryulong insists the article should be located at GReeeeN. To my mind the case is as clearcut as Tsubasa:_RESERVoir_CHRoNiCLE being located at Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. I really don't see any ambiguity in the guidelines here. I know you've been active in discussions of this type in the past, so I'm hoping you can help settle this. The user in question instantly reverts any attempts at moving the article to Greeeen. Many thanks in advance! --Lets Enjoy Life (talk) 00:19, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

It's preferable to use normal capitalization (WP:MOS-TM), but a long as there are redirects, it pretty much doesn't matter. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 05:12, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
I see - thanks for the input! With regard the use of the word throughout the article, it's my understanding something like GReeeeN should be rendered Greeeen. Would this be right? I'm more than happy to change this, but the user in question is becoming increasingly closed to discussion, merely stating he wishes to ignore guidelines. --Lets Enjoy Life (talk) 05:37, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, Ryulong does that sometimes. I suggest just letting it drop for now. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 05:39, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

AfD close for Taulmaril

You closed this AfD as "no consensus to delete." I do not see how you reached this interpretation. Discounting the "weak delete" and counting the nomination as "delete," the !vote tally was:

3 Delete
2 Redirect or Merge
1 Merge
1 Keep

Considering that "redirect" is a form of "delete," there is a super-majority for deletion, a significant minority for merge, and only one !vote to keep. I would have interpreted the discussion as: "Consensus is delete. Merge may be appropriate, so content can be userified on request for this purpose." Can you explain your reasoning? ~ Ningauble (talk) 13:31, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

First of all, AfD is not a vote, so simple counting of the opinions there is not how things are decided. Secondly, "redirect" is not the same as "delete", especially not when some were suggesting a merging of the content. There was no consensus to delete the page. If you want to continue the merge and/or redirect discussion, please take it up on the appropriate talk page as you would need to come to a consensus there in order to do so. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:24, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
Also, if you think the incorrect interpretation of the AfD discussion was made, you are welcome to bring it up on Deletion review. I stand by my interpretation and decision. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:26, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I know it is not a vote. However, I was surprised by the result because only one participant argued to keep and there was near unanimity that a separate article is inappropriate. You are right that there was no consensus on the remedy. Perhaps it is above and beyond the call of duty for the closer to sort these situations out, particularly with ambivalent "redirect or merge" suggestions. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. ~ Ningauble (talk) 19:33, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
Generally, if there is not an overwhelming consensus toward one outcome (which is the case here), the closer doesn't implement anything. Hence my "no consensus to delete" decision as there wasn't such a consensus. Merge and redirect discussions belong on the appropriate talk page. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:37, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Linking to birthdates

Hi Nihonjoe, the way I read WP:DATES left me thinking most dates should not be linked unless there was a specific reason to. Is this not the case? Deletion process update

Just to let you know that there has been a recent update to the criteria for relisting AFDs. You can see the full details at WP:RELIST. The main update is that relisting an AFD a second time should only be done in exceptional circumstances. I'm letting you know because you have recently been active in relisting AFDs. Yup. Thanks. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:24, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Just wondering if you read this at all; this AFD should have been closed as no consensus (and I have done so) rather than relisting. Stifle (talk) 11:53, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

This is discrimination

The notices posted in my article to delete was prejudicial and discriminatory when autobiographis of many people who have been included in musicians list are not even musicians. How did you approve them all without any citations!!!!!!!???????. And many such cases are seen now. Its not my cup of coffee. I have something to remember now. I can remember and speak about this discrimination during my musical journey. Thanks,--Jayenvarma (talk) 18:57, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

BYOND

Wow, I can't honestly believe it. Wikipedia is truly pathetic. Why don't you guys or just you in particular just stop trying to be self-righteous and improve Wikipedia in a true and right manner then just give up on it pathetically. On your profile page, you say you enjoy editing material to "make it better"? Wouldn't doing so, have you NOT delete the page and build on from it's non-informal state? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Longinuss (talkcontribs) 19:37, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

I just processed the deletion discussion and determined the consensus from the discussion. I personally don't care one way or the other about the article, and if the discussion had led to keeping it, that's what I would have done. If you wish to work on it and improve it to a state where it wouldn't be deleted, I'll be happy to restore it and put it in your userspace so you can do so. Just let me know. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 02:35, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Question

Hi, I was wondering if you could do me a small favour, I do not understand Japanese writing at all and there is a reference [1] that may confirm something that could stop an edit war. So could you please take a look at it and let me know if the person being interviewed confirms that he is Japanese-American? Thanks, Scorpion0422 02:42, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

He doesn't say that. He's asked if his nationality is still Japanese, and he replies with, "Why would I need to become an American? Japanese people can live in America. There wasn't any discrimination in obtaining research funds, and I didn't feel inconvenienced for the most part." This is a translation of this part:

——国籍は日本のままなんですね。

「何でわざわざアメリカ人に変わる必要があるの? 日本人でもアメリカに住める。研究費を取るにも差別はなかったし、ほとんど不便は感じない」

The rest doesn't talk about that. Hope that helps. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 04:41, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Cell merge discussion

The discussion did go to deletion review, and they said we are at liberty to continue discussions on the merge page and revisit consensus there. that's what I am doing.JJJ999 (talk) 05:21, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

You are only continuing to press your opinion after it has been shot down multiple times by overwhelming consensus. Please stop before further actions have to be taken. This is not the way to seek consensus, and you are using up your rope faster than you think. Please don't hang yourself with it by continuing down this path in this manner. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 07:35, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
There have been very short intervals between the forming of one consensus and the attempts to overturn it in some of these DBZ articles. I will give them about the same time they have given in previous instances. That is not months, but it is something.JJJ999 (talk) 08:13, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Categories

Will you please take a quick look at the the following:

  • Issei?
    • ?
    • ?
  • Nisei?
    • ?
    • Nisei?
  • Sansei?
    • ?
    • ?

These are broader topics than I typically choose to address, which leaves me uncertain about the way I have parsed these categories. What improvements would you suggest? --Tenmei (talk) 17:32, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't understand your question. Please rephrase. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 21:10, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
These are four related articles with similar categories; and two of these are new -- Nisei and Sansei.
  • 1. As the creator a a new article, I thought it was part of my job to contrive something to fit in this template: ? To be frank, I never quite understood what I was doing or why, but it was a sufficiently mechanical task that I seem to have managed nicely up until now. I suddenly felt uncertain; and so I'm asking for you to confirm that these are plausibly or adequately handled?
  • 2. Someone else created the categories for Issei; and they seemed applicable to Nisei, Sansei and Nikkei. I copied someone else's work at Issei to the bottom of these others in this set. However, I didn't quite know what to make of "?." I usually ignore the part after the piping. In fact, I thought the piping probably pre-dated "DEFAULTSORT"? In other words: although I have handled something similar on many occasions, I somehow felt uncertain in this instance. So again, I just wanted you to confirm that I was causing no problems with what I'd guessed was plausible or adequate?
  • 3. Saving most difficult for last -- I'm not comfortable with Japanese diaspora which is linked in a network of corollaries; but I want leave this issue for someone more invested in this subject. In my view, Nikkei is a better choice for both article and category; but since someone else has already created a re-direct, I was hoping to leave it there. Unfortunately, the more I thought about these questions, the more unsure I became. So, again I'm looking for a confirmation that "Alternative B"-below is plausible or adequate?
  • ALTERNATIVE A: ?
    • ?
  • ALTERNATIVE B: ?
    • ?
Given the range of other complex subjects I've tackled, I can't begin to explain why these relatively trivial stumbling-blocks became insurmountable; but there you have it. I was puzzled, and I was hoping that a resolution of these parsing issues would seem very simple or even obvious to you. --Tenmei (talk) 22:22, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Okay, let me try to answer them in order:
  1. should only be used if the title of the article is different from how the article should be sorted in categories. For example, Sumi Shimamoto should be sorted by her family name, so you would put on her page. List of manga magazines should be sorted by "manga" rather than "List", so you would put (or without the "List of" if you want) on that page. You should only use the piped sorting key in the category if the article needs to be sorted differently in one specific category. The piped sort key overrides the .
  2. The piping does predate . I think I answered the rest in #1, above.
  3. Category:Japanese diaspora is broad enough to have a decent number of articles in it, yet specific enough to not be overflowing. I don't think there's a need for separate categories for Issei, Nissei, Sansei, and Nikkei unless there are 20 or more articles which can be categorized there. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:46, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. --Tenmei (talk) 12:47, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Translation?

Hey. I'm currently translating an article from Japanese to English, and I got stuck on a line that just has me bewildered. The line is:

I've translated it to:

Densha Otoko's posts continued for awhile longer, but on May 17, there were posts about being on the verge of having sex, forum members made inappropriate comments (they had been expressing their opinions and thoughts about him). Later that night, Densha Otoko left the boards.

It just seems like a very strange thing to be included in the article. If you've got a few minutes, could you maybe look at the translation and see if I got it right? I'll keep an eye on this page, so I guess you can reply here. If you can't help, that's okay too. Thanks! — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 03:56, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
