Page size tool

Greetings. I prefer using the Cologne Blue skin, but cannot get the page size tool does not appear in my toolbox. Are the two incompatible? Buster40004 Talk 14:42, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Not to my knowledge; I went to User talk:Dr pda/prosesize.js and while there may be browser issues (I use Firefox, with no problems), the javascript should work on any skin. Yes, I installed it as directed and read the user page to see what issues were there. When I install it on the common.js page, it works on several other skins with no problems. For the GCOE drive I switched skins to Vector and it worked well. Thanks for pointing me to the user talk page. I don't mean to trouble you with this, so I am going to explore the clues that I found on Dr pds's user page. I am going to try Explorer and Chrome to see if it is a Firefox issue, also I am going to the developer's page and ask about the skin issue. again, thanks for the help. FWIW, content creation is not my strongest suit; I've created two start-class articles on obscure horse breeds (Baise horse and Spanish-Norman horse}, but feel more comfortable improving articles than creating them. The Baise horse article has a {{refimprove}} tag, which I'll address tomorrow; there's not much info out there, but I found two Chinese sources I can use to beef up the refs. An article I copyedited in September, Kareena Kapoor, is now a FAC. For me, "copyediting" is much more than moving commas around; I just did a minor overhaul on European Southern Observatory, a puff piece which I did my best to haul in the general direction of NPOV. I've also worked at AfC, NPP, contribute to RfCs and a number of WikiProjects, and have just begun a term as a GOCE coordinator (I want to hold off on any RFA till we wrap up the January backlog-reduction drive later this week). Hope this helps, and if you want to hold off I fully understand. Judging by the opposes I've seen in recent RFAs, I may not be just what they're looking for :-). Oh well, there is no need to create the article to make it look good. I really appreciate and give high value to your work as copyeditor. For example, I didn't create Ricardo Arjona, but I managed to take it to GA thanks to a copyeditor. Same with Independiente (Ricardo Arjona album), which you copyedited twice. I believe that copyediting means that you know a lot about content creation, otherwise, you wouldn't be able to make a fine copyedit to an article which later achieves featured status, and that's a big point. About the opposes at RfAs, don't worry about them. Most RfAs have users opposing them. I think that they just give a balance to the equation :) — ΛΧΣ²¹ 04:39, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Copy edits

Hey there. I'm trying to check a few copy edits from everyone in the backlog drive today. I looked at a couple of yours, and they're fine, except for one minor point. At Patriarch of Alexandria, I removed the word "however", which you'd added. From my recent experience at WP:FAC, I've discovered that word is strongly frowned upon, and we should avoid using it at all costs. Anyway, everything else looks fine, and if we didn't nitpick, we wouldn't be copy editing in the first place. :) Cheers. —Torchiest ^talk_edits 19:46, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

No problem; I'm not married to anything I do on WP. As you know, sometimes we're faced with long sentences and I break 'em up as best I can; I'm surprised that would be an issue at FAC, but individual editors have their own hobbyhorses. Miniapolis 23:26, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Precision and consistency are great, but it's amazing how quickly "I think it should be this way" can turn into "It has to be this way (and here's a wall of text why)". On WP:NPOVN comment

Hi, could I ask you a question regarding this comment you made over at that discussion? I understand it as a confirmation that WP:WEIGHT and WP:DUE in a WP article can be established by the use of reliable secondary sources (such as established newspapers). Am I way off base here or is that an accurate interpretation of your comment? Yes, RS in WP:DUE includes mainstream newspapers with editorial oversight reporting a story (as opposed to commentary). However, newspaper accounts by definition are those of an unfolding story, and care must be taken when citing them not to skew the NPOV. Sorry for not getting back to you sooner; I've been busy. Keepscases at your RfA

No reason why you should have known this, but keepscases routinely opposes candidates who have userboxes indicating a dislike for organized religion. Just a suggestion but you might want to ignore any further discussion on that particular oppose, it's likely to dissolve into a mess (best avoidable in an RfA). I, and I'm sure most editors, understand why you might want to remove a userbox that you think gave offense to someone (a laudable thing) even though (because of keepscases history) it was not necessary in this case. Because semi-protection only restricts editing by IPs, and the problems cited by the requester (and reflected by the article's history) now involve confirmed accounts almost exclusively. Semi-protection only restricts anonymous editors; logged-in editors (SPA or otherwise) may continue to edit. Since the dispute now concerns logged-in editors, full protection seems appropriate. When you declined to protect that page, you said, "May be a misunderstanding about what constitutes a football season; please discuss on article talk page." That makes no sense. The IP user is assigning a win-loss record for games that have not taken place yet. To say this is a misunderstanding, really stretches credulity. I understand not everyone follows American football, or even sports in general, but suffice it to say, someone is repeatedly assigning a strict numerical value to a future event. This is like editing, United States presidential election, 2016 to list Marco Rubio as the winner of 8 primaries.

I took a second look and semi-protected the page for a month; if the vandalism resumes then, it can be indeffed. When I declined, I was thinking of the NFL (where the fall season extends into the next calendar year, and an editor in good faith might be confused about what year to call the season) and forgot that in college football the bowl games are over by New Year's Day so there's less ambiguity. Im sorry to have to bother you with this, but I think semi-protection of the article is needed, an IP is again going against community consensus and changing name info inside the article. I am also suspicious as I had a dispute with these IPs yesterday and now it seems that these IPs are used by one person to give the impression that it is a majority for Death of.. renaming of the article at the talk page of the article. Protection of Murder of Travis Alexander?

Hi,

Just to let you know, there is not an ongoing vandalism risk from IP's on the page "Murder of Travis Alexander". The protection request was put in by user BabbaQ and was aimed at just affecting me. I feel this is unfair, and I am being treated differently for just being an IP. If you please read the discussion on my talk page and on the talk page of Murder of Travis Alexander, you will see that it is a consensus in favour of "death of" and just because BabbaQ has a username you are favouring him. He is not even contributing to the discussion anymore. Please read the discussion on the talk page and see for yourself.

I saw an edit war in the making, and semi-protected the article because the dispute concerned future events. Pending-changes protection seems inappropriate, since the article has been heavily edited. Where do you "see a consensus for "Murder of..."" on the talk page? It is just two users who support this position, BabbaQ just constantly repeats this over and over. Can you explain how it is NPOV to say "murder" in the article as a fact, when there is an ongoing trail to determine the circumstances surrounding the death?? The defendant (with whom I have no connection) maintains it was self defence. It should surely read "death of" until the trial outcome? Just because BabbaQ has a user account this is allowed to stand and the page is protected? Doesn't make sense. Brilliant article name, describes the situation as presently known perfectly as there is no question she killed him. I agree with BabbaQ murder will very likely be the outcome of the case, but we shouldn't write the article presuming a particular outcome and stating it as current fact. RM backlog

As a new admin, I hope that I can encourage you to take a stab at closing a dozen of the RM backlog requests. The way WP:RM is set up, requests can be closed at any time, but are not intended to remain open for longer than seven days, meaning that all should be closed before they reach the WP:RM#Backlog. In other words, after the backlog is cleared out, standard procedure should be to close all of the requests just before they reach the backlog. In some cases, though, this means relisting, which also should be done before reaching the backlog. Closing instructions are at WP:RMCI. If each new admin closes a few requests the backlog can be cleared. Apteva (talk) 04:44, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Welcome, and thanks for your help. Category pages can't be edited; instead, you edit your section on the blitz page with the {{Working}} tag. The instructions are on the page, and you can play monkey-see, monkey-do (like I do :-)) by looking at another editor in edit mode if you're not sure what to do. Hope this helps. Hi Miniapolis. Of course there is a reason. This IP is the most recent incarnation of User:Oldhouse2012 who is a community banned sockmaster who is now IP-hopping each time he is blocked. All edits by community banned users such as Oldhouse2012 are reverted immediately on sight. If Oldhouse2012 wants to edit WP, he needs to appeal his ban. But he clearly does not wish to edit by the rules the rest of us follow. The IP-hopping block evasion is also clearly not helping his case. The edits he makes may well be properly sourced, but that is completely irrelevant to why they are being reverted on sight. I will continue to revert everything he does as and when I identify it unless he successfully appeals his community ban or it is otherwise overturned. Copy editor mentoring

Hi there. I want to join the Guild of Copy Editors, and I would like to have your critique and whatnot, if you're available and willing. I have been doing basic copy editing for a year, mainly typos. I finally got up my gumption to be bold and I started two wikipedia articles this month. Mitch Markovich and Frank Arsenault. With those newfound padewan skills, I have started reprocessing my past major contributions, and fleshing them out some more. I know that there is maybe one page that I've contributed to which is not ideal by wikipedia standards. But I was told by fellow copy editors that my articles are good and that I'm on the right track. I really want some more automation tools so I can ramp up production, and I'm seriously thinking about being an Administrator at some point. Anyway, let me know what you think! Thanks for your interest in copyediting, although in future please put new posts at the bottom of the page (you can just click on the "new section" tab at the top of the page to do it automatically). The GOCE page has many helpful links about copyediting and the Manual of Style, while mammoth, is an invaluable reference. BTW, our next month-long backlog-reduction drive starts Friday. I looked at your two articles, and they're very good. You were right to declare your conflict of interest, but it's equally important when adding content to any article to avoid peacock words (which flatter the subject in an unencyclopedic way). While some editors swear by automated tools, I prefer manual edits for the most part because I know my limits :-). Quality is more important than quantity.
