In today's lackadaisical society of infotainment and entertainment news hype, viral videos, cell phone zombies, and other nonsense, it's refreshing to hear your standpoint. Environmental matters don't get much press, because people tune out, and media makes less on advertising, so media focuses on trivial matters nowadays instead, such as the price of a dress that a celebrity wore. Article assessment

Hi, MegaLibraryGirl, My mentor, montanabw, suggested you. I know you from the Women in Red Project, you helped me set up the Rodeo list. After an editor, SWP13, downgraded the Wikiproject class on my 'Precious" award winning article Mary Walker (rodeo) Talk:Mary Walker (rodeo) from C-Class to Start-class, it made me wonder. I discovered an eager editor had been working weeks on assessing mostly WikiProject Women articles. After reading on User talk:SWP13#John Clarence Webster and User talk:SWP13#Start class? on her talk page, I visited the Webster page. The author was right; his page was not a stub class; nowhere near it. I wrote up some explanation and changed it to a C-class. NEW INSERT Talk:John Clarence Webster No real responses. This morning, the Webster author responded to me on my talk page. User talk:Dawnleelynn#Reassessment. I also got some information from SWP13 about her intentions, on her talk page User talk:SWP13#Links to DAB pages on your User page. You want to page down where she talks about having started with 7,000 and down to 5,000 now. Also mentions wanting to get to the top 1000 in the wiki editor rankings. Today, she went right back to the same way of assessing articles, only stubs and starts. I looked at articles in the first page of contribs and there are articles that are C-class quality being assessed as Start-class again. Maybe she will listen to an admin? Thank you for listening. Btw, it seems like many of these articles have not been assessed before. Oh and happy birthday, not a great present. I know you do a lot for Wikipedia though. I volunteered for two hours at our library here today. Anyway, she is not going to listen to me about the assessments, perhaps she might listen to you since you are an admin? That's alot of articles. That's understandable. I don't know time zones, etc. She is doing alot of work as you say. I don't want to dissuade her from doing work, just ensure that the work being done gets more of the correct classes assigned to the articles. Of course we appreciate her incentive. Looks like Ipigott has had a look and re-assessed the article as B-class. Given the article is 15K of prose, looks well written and cites sources extensively, this seems a fair assessment. Ritchie333 ^{(talk) (cont)} 10:46, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

I also see that SWP13 has been doing lots of useful work on WiR articles and their talk pages but in some cases has downgraded assessments owing to factors such as lack of birth and death information or sources which have become dead links. That can be pretty frustrating for contributors who have spent a lot of time and effort on developing detailed biographies. May I suggest that more consideration is given to the automatic assessments provided by the ORES tool. Rosiestep is a keen ORES user and has been providing lots of assessments of WiR pages on the basis of its ratings. She also gives instructions on how to install it here. I have found it very useful myself, especially for applying Start or C ratings to new articles or stubs. Hope this helps.--Ipigott (talk) 10:50, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

I have dropped a note on SWP13's talk page as I see they are vexed about their work getting deleted. Possibly they've moved towards "busy work" knowing they won't get "told off" for it with deletion templates; hopefully this will encourage them to go back to the writing part of the project. dawnleelynn, that's a really nice article on Mary Walker, and hi to Montanabw. Since installing the ORES tool, which Ipigott menitons above, I've relied on AI to re-assess >1,000 (mostly women writers) biographies. While I don't agree 100% of the time with the AI prediction, I mostly do agree. When I do agree, I paste the ORES predictive statement into the talkpage Edit Summary and change the assessment in the wikiproject templates. When I don't agree, I paste the ORES score into my edit summary, add what I think, and then update the wikiproject templates with my rating. I would encourage you to install the tool so that you can see for yourself the AI predictive class of every article you view; it's like putting on a pair of glasses and being able to see things more clearly. As for the Mary Walker article, the ORES predicted quality is "GA (4.21)". In fact, on the article history page, you can see that it's been rated at GA quality since the edit on: 11:26, June 9, 2018. I'm not sure what methodology SWP13 is using, so I don't feel I can comment on that. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:02, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Glad you are monitoring some pages. I mostly assess WikiProject with class that is blank. I assess the page as stub or start. Feel free to upgrade to higher level (C, B, GA,..) if you wish. It was for Women in Red. I'm very excited to learn about these tools and I will install and figure the best for my purpose. Thanks for the edit assessment on Mary Walker, Ipigott. I think I always shoot for one class lower to be safe. Now one of these tools actually assesses Walker at GA, what a remarkable thing. I have done the assessment of all of the rodeo articles twice now, and it's no fun, as discussed. I'm excited to use a tool that assists, and I encourage you too SWP13. Thought SWP13, just because the assessment is blank, does not mean the article is only a stub or start class. The assessment table is the guide, where did you hear otherwise? I will be trying them out on some of the articles I created. Wonder what it would do with a list article though? @AntiCompositeNumber and Rosiestep: I have tried to get the scripts going. To install both. I have somewhat of a background in programming. Must be a Wikipedia thing. This is the first time I've tried to set up my user script file. Any help appreciated. I followed the directions, but have the error message, "There is no skin "Common". Custom .css, .json, and .js pages use a lowercase title, e.g. User:Foo/vector.css as opposed to User:Foo/Vector.css." Hmm, I'm not super technical dawnleelynn, so I don't know how to give guidance on this because it might be different based on the skin you are using. But for me, I go to User:Rosiestep/common.js, add the script on the next available line, and then clear my cache. Dawnleelynn, MediaWiki will only automatically run javascript on certain user pages. User:Dawnleelynn/Common.js won't work because Common.js needs to be lowercase. If you move the page to User:Dawnleelynn/common.js, it will load. User:Dawnleelynn/vector.js is at the right location but will only work if you are using the default Vector skin. You only need to use one of these pages though. The other problem is that line 2 on both pages needs a ); at the end to be valid JavaScript. Once you fix that line, the scripts should load, but you may have to bypass your cache first.

@AntiCompositeNumber and Rosiestep: Ba da bing, Ba da boom. All I did was make the C lowercase in the file name and add the ); in the one line it was missing. And cleared the cache in Google. Boom both scripts were working. Checked the article I wanted, it was set at Start-class, which I knew was incorrect. Both scripts rated it as a C-Class. Nice! Thanks a bunch. Documenting WIR stuff on Facebook

What counts as "mentioning on Facebook" for Women in Red? A friend was at a conference at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, posted a picture of herself with Shubulade Smith here and I thought, "oooh, we'll have an article on that, thanks". Women in Red - References

Hi Megalibrarygirl. I have been working on a Draft:Katherine_Hughes_(activist) from a red link in Women in Red. I'm still working on general formatting and creating running prose for the draft itself. I have been using several electronic sources to help me do that, but even though I have access to my local library, the library itself doesn't have one print source about Hughes that looks like it would be incredibly useful for referencing information about her as it is a print biography of her life. The title of the book is: Katherine Hughes: A Life and a Journey. The book is written by Pádraig Ó Siadhail and the publisher is Penumbra Press. Clovermoss to start with I've found a review of the book on EBSCOhost that does provide some biographical information. I can give you access to the full text of the article if you email me. Looking at WorldCat, there are no libraries near me that have a copy. You can try doing an Interlibrary Loan at your library. There are several copies at Canadian universities. Clovermoss: Hope you don't mind my intervening here but it looks to me as if there are several rich accounts of Hughes on which you could base an article. For example HUGHES, KATHERINE (Catherine) ANGELINA, History finally recognizes Katherine Hughes, and Profiles of Irish-Canadians: Katherine Angelina Hughes. I can haz autoconfirmed and haz admin, so I skipped draft and went straight to mainspace :-) He clearly meets WP:POLITICIAN having been appointed to a seat on national government. As for why it's called a "Knight Bachelor", it dates back to the Middle Ages, when "bachelor" simply meant someone too young or poor to lead an army under his own banner, as opposed to a Knight banneret who did. It acquired its other meanings later on - somebody not old enough to have a banner was probably also unmarried, and so the name transferred over. It much later became the euphemism for homosexuality.
