An update from the Sustainability Initiative

Thank you for supporting the Sustainability Initiative!

Hi, Megalibrarygirl! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

What's new?

We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)

What's next?

Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

Please help!

Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:

  • Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
  • Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
  • Improve and translate the project page on Meta.

If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey and Gnom (talk) 22:18, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Woman's club movement

Hello:

The copy edit that you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Woman's club movement has been completed.

I noticed that most of the article's URLs have not been archived. I archived #1 at the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. This might be worth finishing to avoid dead links as time allows.

Also, I have hyphenated the term African American where it is used as an adjective, but not when it is used as a noun.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:16, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, Twofingered Typist. I'll correct the rest. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:42, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Connecting re Wikipedia + Libraries

Hello! -- Merrilee suggested I reach out to you about your work with libraries and Wikipedia, and/or with Wikipedia as a librarian. Indeed, it seems you're up to some good work. I'd love to connect with you re this. Please ping me when you have a minute. Sincerely, Monikasj (talk) 19:04, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Monikasj! I'd enjoy talking with you. Feel free to email me. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:47, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Hey Megalibrarygirl I did actually send you a couple of emails, I'm not certain that I have the correct address, could you check your spam box? Or email me at jonesm at oclc dot org Monikasj (talk) 18:01, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Hi Monikasj I did get the emails, but I somehow overlooked them. The site looks great and I signed up on WebJunction. How can I help you out on this project? Thanks for being patient with me! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:10, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Annie Jump Cannon

I'm sorry for sounding the "awoooga awooga undersourced biography drop it in Susan's lap" alarm again, but this article is sitting on the main page right now, and badly needs some sourcing. I will look at it if I've got time (which I probably don't), but I just thought this sort of thing was right up your street. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:59, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Ritchie333! No worries. I'm a librarian. I love this kind of shit. ;) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:29, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
OMG! I love this, Ritchie333!!! Am adding it to user page. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:32, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for April 15

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited British Black Panthers, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Black history. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Not My Presidents Day

Just in case you're interested! Not My Presidents Day. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:40, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

I am! Thanks, Another Believer! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:41, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
Glad to hear! --Another Believer (Talk) 00:28, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
I am surprised by the number of merge votes... Wikipedia is a funny place sometimes! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:33, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
I am surprised, too, Another Believer. But then this presidency is not a normal one and trying to navigate whether articles should be stand-alone or not is going to be tough. I'm personally very liberal, so I do want to see us cover this from a personal perspective. However, I really do think the article passes the GNG test and doesn't qualify as "news." But maybe I'm seeing things through a biased lens. However, I still stand by my comment on the AfD: nominating 10 minutes after creation is too fast. I think people are too quick to delete. :( Megalibrarygirl (talk) 20:09, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, I've seen a few folks voting to merge/delete essentially all content critical of Trump. This aside, I think too many people vote a AfC based solely on the current state of the Wikipedia article and not the potential article based on all sourcing. Arguments along the lines of "this protest was not as big as the Women's March" have no merit... what really matters is whether or not the subject is notable based on reliable secondary coverage. We'll see what happens, but in the meantime, keep up the great work on these articles! ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:14, 22 February 2017 (UTC)

Works for me! I started a new merge section on the article's talk page, since I assume some folks will want to address this again. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:58, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Hey, no rush, but when you have a few moments, would you mind revisiting Talk:Not_My_Presidents_Day#Good_article.3F? There are just 4 cities left needing research, and I could also use your feedback in the section below re: international activities. I'm on the fence about including these in an international section, and would like to decide on this with your help before we go to Good article nomination. Thanks so much! (Also, I see you signed up at WPUS' 50,000 Challenge -- welcome to the club!) ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:48, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Another Believer, I'm on it! :D Bri who I met in Berlin told me about the challenge. ;) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:23, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Ah, great! Yes, Bri is very active and we will be working on the upcoming 420 collaboration together during the second half of April. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:25, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Also, I hope you had a great time in Berlin. I love the Wikimedia Conference and hope you found the experience as enjoyable and productive as I have in the past. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:30, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, Another Believer, it was pretty intense. I'm glad I got the chance to attend, and see Berlin. ;) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:31, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Yes, the conference can be quite exhausting, but I feel so connected with my tribe. Berlin is one of my favorite cities in the world. Glad you enjoyed! ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:32, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Gentle reminder, WP:420 has officially kicked off. - Bri (talk) 20:49, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, come play! :p ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:14, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
I'll be there, Bri and Another Believer. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 22:14, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

  The Teamwork Barnstar
Thanks so much for collaborating with me on Not My Presidents Day, which was just promoted to Good article status. I truly enjoyed working with you, and I hope we can do the same again very soon. :) --Another Believer (Talk) 16:12, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

I can tell you're working on quite a few different projects right now, so feel free to ignore this message. I'll be working on the 420 collaboration for the next 2 weeks, but I've identified two articles I hope to finish expanding in the near future: Weed the People and Women's March on Portland. The former is definitely timely given the 420 collaboration, and the latter is one I've been putting off but really want to finish. Both are in a good state but have additional sources on their respective talk pages that need to be incorporated into the articles. If you have any interest in collaborating on (and co-nominating for Good status) either of these, just let me know! If not, no worries, but I do hope we can work together again soon! Keep up the great work! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:16, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

@Another Believer: I'd be happy to help out as I'm able. You are a pleasure to work with. :) And thank you for the barnstar!!!! :D Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:42, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Mrs. E. Burke Collins

Hi Sue, I need your help as a librarian re an article name. It was created as Mrs. E. Burke Collins but was moved to Emma Burke Collins. I decided to use the pseudonym, "Mrs. E. Burke Collins" as I couldn't find a VIAF, and the references I had found used varied forms of her maiden and/or married (x3) names, or her pseudonym. I don't think "Emma Burke Collins" is a good choice (she doesn't seem to have ever used that name, and I left a note on Deb's page in that regard), but I'm not convinced that "Mrs. E. Burke Collins" is right either. Maybe Emma Augusta Browne Sharkey (which would match up with another dime novelist, Sarah Elizabeth Forbush Downs, who also used a married pseudonym, "Mrs. Georgie Sheldon"? Hoping you might have some thoughts on this and/or can locate a VIAF or other identifier. In the meantime, I'll leave things as is. Thanks, --Rosiestep (talk) 00:42, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Just thought I'd weigh in here, you can ignore it if you want ;) When I created Elizabeth Stumm I was faced with the same dilemma, as all of her works were written in the name of Mrs. C. C. Stumm. It was a custom of that time to hide wives behind the name of husbands, for whatever reason. I created the article in her own name and did a redirect to her publishing name. Couldn't find Stumm in VIAF either, which points up another fallacy of using those h-index and g-index factors to weigh women's works. SusunW (talk) 14:25, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
So true. That was common practice in those days. And there's Mary Simmerson Cunningham Logan, pen name, Mrs. John A. Logan. But before I move the article one more time, I'm hoping someone can find an authority control on Emma to support Emma Augusta Browne Sharkey, or Emma Augusta Sharkey, or something else. If not, I'll move it to Emma Augusta Browne Sharkey and be done with it. What will really bother me is if this prolific writer has no authority control number, e.g. if no one thought her writing was important enough! --Rosiestep (talk) 16:03, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
@Rosiestep and SusunW: I'll look into it. Something is weird about this. She's on OCLC. Btw, there she is listed as E. Burke Collins, Mrs., so I think that Rosie's initial naming was correct. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:50, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
@Rosiestep and SusunW: I'm contacting folks to see what's up. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:54, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Yay! Thx! --Rosiestep (talk) 17:03, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
I am constantly amazed at how many "really prolific writers" have no authority control data. But, it will be interesting if Sue can find a way to fix the problem. SusunW (talk) 17:10, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
I'm amazed, too... sadly. There should be a category for that. Another interesting category would be: Women writers who used their husband's name with the prefix Mrs. as a pseudonym. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 19:07, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Dear Susan:

Many thanks for your contributions to the WikiProject Women in Red/Metrics. In the last ten years, I have created hundreds of articles related to women professional baseball players. Article rescue?

Godless Bitches was just deleted. I was thinking of rescuing it. Do you want to give it a try? - Bri (talk) 23:05, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

@Bri: I'd be happy to help out with that. Have you put in a request to restore what was there so we can use it for a draft, or do you want to start from scratch? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:47, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Did the necessary just now at WP:UND. - Bri (talk) 17:09, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Bri! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:17, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

WiR for May

Thanks, Sue, for all your help with the editathon pages for May. I think the geo focus is on the Asian and Pacific islands rather than on the whole of Asia. You might like to adapt the red link pages if you agree. I'm glad to see we already have a list of red links on conferences. Maybe it should be spun off as a separate list -- but that's entirely up to you. I've also added editathon banner templates and am now waiting for Rosie to send invitations via mass mailing. I've sent about 80 invitations on sports alone to relevant WikiProjects and editors. I very much hope the sports focus will attract wide interest as the results for April have not been very encouraging. Keep up the good work and let me know if you run into any difficulties.--Ipigott (talk) 14:29, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Ipigott, I can edit the Pacific page. I'll also try to get to the Met Page for June, at least get the bare-bones set up, too. Thanks and always let me know how I can help more! :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 15:53, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
