My condolences also, and my thanks for drawing attention to the situation. bahamut0013 is one frequent contributor with whom I have had no dealings but it is already evident that many did and that he was A Good Man. Sorry that anyone has to be the bearer of sad tidings, Tony, but I thank you for sharing the news. He and I interacted often on a couple of article pages that we both had watchlisted -- and that were frequently subject to problematic edits. There actually isn't a lot of Wiki-case material for this sort of thing. I know that there is some precedent for postings links requesting assistance on account of Wikipedia doing that after Hurricane Katrina struck to raise money for the victims. If nothing else, we may be able to add something about this to the upcoming issue of The Bugle (milhist's news letter), but I am not sure if the assistance ad itself can be placed anywhere else without bumping up against policy or guidelines. Position and size of photo

Tony,

I looked at Mariana Bracetti as well, and left the following note on its talk page:

Since The Flag of Lares is a significant subject in this article, I increased the size of the photo which depicts the flag.

I also tried to re-position the photo on the left side of the page, but the margin of the photo abutted right onto the text, and it looked much too cluttered.

If another editor can properly execute this (ie, re-position photo to the left, and establish some space around the photo's margin ), I think it would be an improvement.

Thanks for your supportive comments in Raymond Márquez. I've examined the text that the new editor wished to add, and found that for the most part it added nothing useful or, in the case of the two paragraphs on tax cases, was actually self-promotional for the attorney involved. Islands of Puerto Rico

Hi Tony, hope everything is well and you are enjoying life more now that it's been a number of months since your delicate surgery. Hey, I am contacting because I noticed in the Puerto Rico article there is (at the very bottom) an expandable section in blue titled "Articles related to Puerto Rico", and in it there is a pink sub-section titled "Commonwealth of Puerto Rico" with a list of "Islands" [of Puerto Rico]. I tried adding a few southern island (haha, you know me, the ones in Ponce!) but couldn't, there is something like a template or what have you, and I don't work with that stuff (read: don't know how to do it). To Caja de Muertos (which is there), we should also add Cardona (Ponce), Gatas (Ponce), Isla de Jueyes, Isla del Frío, Morrillito, and Ratones. What's the trick? where is it done, you must know... Awesome! it's done. Also, in the template Template:Puerto Rico topics there is a section called Geography, and it has Mona and Desecheo listed although they are already found in the same level under "Islands" (under Mayaguez). Hey, speaking of PRindependence, these guys at Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Mercy11&redirect=no#File:DSC00299_-_Claridad_newspaper_front_page.2C_Nov_4-10.2C_2010.jpg) want to delete the image of Claridad independence media, but state that it could be saved under fair-use but not in Commons but in English Wikipedia (like, say, File:Seattletimes-frontpage.jpg). But uploading images to English WP is something I can't figure out how to do (if it came to that) because everytime I tried to upload something to it (it's been a while) it always said it should be uploaded to Commons instead. LLT

Yes I agree that he could be listed under both (and there was 1 or 2 more like him) but I just didn't have the time nor the energy to go in that direction last night before bedtime. However, I don't think that just -living- at a place is enough. IMO, the person must have actually -performed- at that place the feat that made him go down in history to be considered as being from there. Again, this is my opinion, and I am not saying I have found this set on stone anywhere (yet), but is pure logic - I'll explain.

I see that LLT was born in JD, but did what he did while he was in Ponce, and that's why I reverted, because his connection to Ponce was vastly more prominent that his connection to JD (and in fact he probably would not have done what he did had he stayed in JD.) In the case of LLT, he was born in JD, spent his childhood in various other towns, travelled to Europe and got his degree/s there, but it was not until he moved, lived, and spent years in Ponce that he got to make his place in history. I am convinced that, say, 10 years after his return to PR in 1901, had he traveled to, say, NYC, to dictate, say, a conference or to give an exposition, that he would had been introduced as LLT from Ponce, PR, and not LLT from JD, PR. Based on this reasoning I believe the cat "from Ponce" is relevant, more so (and if need be, in place of) than the cat "from JD".

So, to address just the question, yes imo it would be correct to have both and I will add JD now that I am all rested (jaja). Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 14:58, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

I am willing to work on it but it looks like users systematically edit it for the worse, add contentious material, and eliminate important information. I requested semi-protection but I don't know if they will grant it. There's also material referenced to a book that has not come out, my gut feeling is to eliminate all strange-sounding claims that are not substantiated in the articles that have come out in reputable sources. Chi-Chi Rodriguez and PR military cats

Based on WP:CATEGORY, which states,

Each article should be placed in all of the most specific categories to which it logically belongs. This means that if a page belongs to a subcategory of C (or a subcategory of a subcategory of C, and so on) then it is not normally placed directly into C. For exceptions to this rule, see Eponymous categories and Non-diffusing subcategories below.

I don't think Juan "Chi-Chi" Rodríguez should be in both the "Puerto Rican Army personnel" and "Puerto Rican military personnel" categories. He served in the U.S. Army so the PR Army cat is the most specific cat that applies. I think this also applies to most of the biography articles in "Puerto Rican military personnel". If a person is in one or more of the sub-cats, they shouldn't also be in the parent cat. Tewapack (talk) 21:52, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Many Anglo-Saxons seem to have a hardtime telling the difference, or understanding the diff between race and ethnicity. Hey, without taking sides, you may want to take a look at the PR talk page. We are finally heading to achieving a compromise, but boy! this fellow Seablade seems to think I have it in my blood to be acting in bad faith. I am not asking at all you present your wiew in the issue (so to speak) "in debate" per se. But simply that maybe you can help keep heads cool. I think he is well intentioned but sometimes seems to think I am not well intentioned as well. If you don't want to get involved at all, I understand. (If I am guessing right, it would be for the same reason that I, to be sure I enjoying editing here more often than regret editing it, I oftentimes work on articles that nobody cares about, such as List of rivers of Ponce -- heehee). I walked by a cemetery this weekend, and saw something most unusual. Someone had placed about twenty turkeys inside the cemetery. They were roaming around, grazing in the grass, doing whatever turkeys do. Of course, they were utterly oblivious to their impending doom. Someone with a great degree of practicality and a macabre sense of humor placed those poor turkeys in the cemetery.

It reminded me of the GOP presidential debate which I saw last night.

Herbert Lewis Hardwick

Awesome! However, shouldn't his birth name be "Herbert Lewis Hardwick Arroyo"? He was born in PR in 1914 thus he must have had a PR Birth Certificate which at that time where issued with both parents' names to reduce deadbeat fathers. Also he was raised by his aunt a Puerto Rican and into Puerto Rican customs and heritage. Hey. his American Negro father even died young, so there is little chance Herbert was raised with American or American Negro heritage, right? So there! Hi. Check THIS out. Then notice that Juan Ponce de Leon II is on the list, yet his article says he was Puerto Rican. OK, so which was he??? To add insult to injury, THIS template (and found at the bottom of Criollo people) seems to state that a criollo is an "ethnicity" resulting from the mixing of 2 pure blood Spaniards. wow! Guanica or Yauco?

So we can justify the switch in the NRHP records from Guanica to Yauco, do we have a citation that supports the statement "the battlefield is located in present day Yauco???

Also, Tony, coffee grows best in the mountains (this is due to the friendlier lower temperatures) and when protected by tall shady trees, none of which are true of that barren valley and hill in the photo HERE. Could it be true that the battle took place where the photo was shot if the battle took place in a coffee plantation? I have been personally to southern and SW Puerto Rico before and have seen only sugar cane grow in the terrain shown in the alleged photo of the Battle of Yauco/Mariani Coffee Plantation, and I have likewise seen first hand (personally) coffee plantations in Yauco, but -ONLY- in the mountains. Coffee does not grow well in the valleys, even in a hill the size of that one in the NRHP photo Battle of Yauco picture.

Also, whose photo is THAT anyway? I mean, who took it? Can it be replaced by a newer one (obviously the place hasn't dissappeared from earth, even if it was now overrun by an urbanizacion or a shopping plaza, etc)? Can someone locate d the exact location? Do we have the exact coordinates? Is the mark location marked with a historical marking such as a monument of any size? Maybe a roadside monument? It would probably be more useful to have a close up photo of a monument in addition to an old picture of the terrain as it stood at/near the time of the battle.

On a separate note, what do you know about the Marianis? There is a residential district in Ponce Historic Zone called "Mariani". It was built before my times -- maybe 10-20 years BM (that's "Before Mercy11", hehe) and I have searched far and wide and have come up with no historical reason for that naming. Could it have come from the Marianis in Yauco? Was it name after someone in this family?

It turns out that Barrio Montalva (Western Guanica and bordering Lajas) and Barrio Cerenero (Eastern Guanica and bordering Yauco) are at opposite ends in the municipality of Guanica. Though none of this would matter if Guanica (the whole current day Guanica) was part of Yauco at the time of the Battle of Yauco in 1898, it is still useful in knowing where the heck that hill in the picture is located within Guanica.

Also Cerro Lajara (the tallest in all Guanica) is located in barrio Montalva ([1]; Note: Limites Admins, Relieve, and 09-10 Orto must all be on to view the Cerro). Thus it would APPEAR that Seboruco Hills are NOT part of Lajara Hills, especially if we check this HERE (at "Topography"), where it categorically states that Lomas de Seboruco are located in Barrio Cerenero and Lajara Hills in barrio Montalva. So, the Battle of "Yauco" couldn't have taken place in Guanica's barrio Cerenero, nor could it have taken place in the Hills of Seboruco (for Lomas de Seboruco are located in Barrio Carenero). His not providing the precise location of the hill falls short of a doctor who has, presumably, learned the rigoruos rules of research and academic reporting. Which one?

I know you are good with biographies, so after pulling my hair in all directions I decided maybe it was time to get your opinion:

Who was the mother of Ramón Marín, the grandfather of Luis Muñoz Marín by way of his mother (according to the "Ancestors of Luis Muñoz Marín" section in his bio article), and thus great-grandmother of LMM on his mother's side?

Was she Cándida Solá Salich, born in Cabo Rojo (as stated in LMM's bio article) in 1817 (and supported via the familysearch.org link in citation #58 in the LMM bio article (Shortcut: HERE)), or was she "Rosa", a Puerto Rican slave woman that Vicente Marín, LMM's great-grandfather on his mother's side, took for his wife (as stated in Ramon Marin's bio article, and supported via the link at citation #6 in Ramon Marin's bio article (Shortcut HERE))?

Which of the two women was Luis Munoz Marin's great-grandmother, Candida or Rosa?

I too had thought it was Rosa for the same reason you stated (you called it shameful but if, at the time, Rosa was his slave then she was his possession and he was allowed to do pretty much anything he wanted with her, so at the time it may not have been shameful at all). It is possible that Vicente had two wives (hey, maybe even more; happens even today!): Cándida Solá Salich (officially and socially/ecclessiastically legal) and Rosa (unofficially and just a one-night stand or who knows what). It then follows that Rosa was the one that gave birth the only promising child, the only one that would become anybody (Ramon Marin), so his father decided to recognize him as a legitimate child of his.

But a million other things may also be possible: Maybe Candida was barren and couldn't have children. And, exactly what was Vicente doing in Cabo Rojo to have met his bride Candida all the way from Arecibo ca. 1830, when it took days, even weeks, to cross the island in those days because of poor infrastructure? Maybe Vicente never really married Candida or, if he did, maybe he just used her as a "front", socially speaking. Maybe Rosa actually belonged to (slave of) Vicente's father, and not Vicente himself, but Vicente -- maybe a teenager son at the time? -- was the one who raped Rosa, from where Ramon was born, and resulting in Vicente eventually having to recognize Ramon as his son. Or, maybe all the children Vicente had (if any others) were via Rosa and they (Vicente and Candida) BOTH adopted them as their own as they were born. We must also consider than in those years (1830s) most children were born via midwives. (Hey, Ponce didn't have a hospital until 1885, let alone poor Arecibo.) So most births occurred at home, often in the rural and mountain areas. No one knew if a slave had her masters' or master's son's child.

I agree with you entirely that it would not look good in LMM's "resume" to say his great grandmother was a slave, and in particular that his great grandfather took his slave woman as his wife from where Ramon Marin and, from there, LMM were born. And thus the family would tend to "erase" that sort of stuff from any/all records. Likle Jefferson's story, it just doesn't look right to say that Puerto Rico's first elected governor came from a great grandmother who had a rendezvous with her slavery master...

I had started to tickel with the idea that a good way to start finding out who Ramon Marin's real mother was would be to find out who were Ramon Marin's siblings, and then compare their names to Vicente&Candida's children. It should be out there somewhere who Ramon Marin's siblings were, and then the hard work just becomes finding out who where Candida's other children.

As for LMM, Puerto Ricans would had been a lot better without LMM being born: He is teh father of teh current dichotomy in PR politics today if you asked me. Had LMM not been in the pciture, Albizu Campos would had succeeded in getting the bulk of Puerto Ricans to revolt against the US, there would had probably been a protracted war (guerrilla style or otherwise) like the Phillipino brethren had, the American Govt would had been forced by the world community to grant PR its independence (within a couple of years of WWII) and PR would be sovereign republic today. Dammned Vicente!

Ah one more thing: the reference about Candida comes from the LDS (Latter Day Saints) church records. What in the world did they know about Puerto Ricans in the 1830s? Werent the LDSs just forming in the 1830s, and only in the US????
