Looks like a draft article, or an article that was almost deleted and moved into userspace. The user should remove the categories from the page by putting <nowiki> tags around the category listings. List of writers of LGBT literature

Yobmod, your change of title of the List of LGBT writers is not accurate. I went to great pains to only include people who are LGBT or same-sex loving in the list and not to include non-LGBT, non-same-sex authors who write on LGBT topics. Hi, great work with all that sourcing on the list. I changed the title, because it seemed that some of the sources were about works having LGBT themes, not about the writer being LGBT. Although i agree that a writer of works about Queer identity is likely to be LGBT, it is not certain to be so, yes? We also are not including non-LGBT related works by LGBT writers, so calling it a list of LGBT writers is not really true. Can straight writers not write important LGBT literature?Yobmod (talk) 08:22, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

As an example, Arthur C Clarke wrote Imperial Earth, a gound-breaking portrayal of a gay character in science fiction, but there are not the reliable sources to say for certain if he was gay. Mercedes Lackey is noted for including a variety of sexualities in the majority of her young adult fantasies,which is pretty unique, but she is straight. A list of LGBT writers title would exlude such works, no matter how important they are to LGBT literature.Yobmod (talk) 08:29, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Yes, non-LGBT people can write LGBT lit, but that would be a different list (the one you propose). You are correct that the books I consulted include non-LGBT authors. I read every entry and verified that the authors I included were in fact LGBT or same-sex loving (either at a particular moment in their lives or throughout their lives), and that this was discussed in the entries. That is my interest: to create such a list. It is consonant with the list that existed. I can cite by article and author every single external source I read, if this is what is required. I did not include writers if their LGBT or same-sex loving histories are not documented or discussed in scholarly literature. I would prefer to remove authors than to have the name of the list changed.--Lawrlafo (talk) 08:33, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

But you have TS Eliot on this list, and his article does not say he was LGBT, but does mention his relationships with women, including 2 marriages. If he is not LGBT, then this casts doubt on whether all the other uses of that source identify the writer as LGBT, or as a writer of important LGBT works.Yobmod (talk) 08:35, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Death of Rane Arroyo

Puerto Rico

What matters about an LGBT person is the country in which they were born, not necessarily the country where their ancestors were born — there isn't any other political jurisdiction on earth whose Wikipedia "People from" categories are deemed to include people of that ethnic background who were born and raised in other countries, so I don't really understand why Puerto Rico needs to be some kind of unique exception to the way any other country's categories work. If we really need a category for LGBT people who have Puerto Rican ancestors but were born and raised in the continental United States instead of Puerto Rico — I'm not convinced that we do, since we don't categorize anybody else in the tree by their ethnic background rather than their physical birthplace, but I'm willing to defer to other people's judgment if it's felt to be that important — then why not create Category:LGBT people of Puerto Rican descent, or something like that, instead of using Category:LGBT people from Puerto Rico for something it wasn't meant to be used for? To post a whole paragraph in various articles exactly as it appears in one article, shows a lack of creativity, however ...

I would say that it all depends if the person posting the paragraph was the creator and originator of the same, otherwise someone is committing an act of plagiarism. Even if the person was the originator of the paragraph, if he/she wants to use the same words on another article, the correct thing would be for that person to cite the article from where it originated. Example, I contributed a paragraph to Hispanics in the American Civil War which I later posted in the "Military" section of Hispanic and Latino Americans, I cited where my original text came from as

Looking for Wikipedia Ambassadors

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you are listed as a Wikipedian associated with Harvard. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at schools in Boston and Cambridge (including Harvard), which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

If you live near Boston and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from the area who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.

If you're an experienced and active Wikipedian, you might be interested alternatively in becoming an Online Ambassador. The role of Online Ambassadors is to serve as mentors for students; it doesn't require any in-person outreach. Take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

Re:James De La Vega

I looked the article over and saw that you have made all the right corrections to it. The last vandalism to the article was made on Nov. 5th. What I suggest is that you first "warn" the unregistered user and tell them that they will be blocked if they continue to vandalize the article. Place the article in your "watchlist" and if they continue to vandalize the article then request a "protection". That is the reason that I hate the fact that Wikipedia does not require that editors be registered like in most reliable websites. I just read the James de la Vega article and it is much better now. On November 4 it was truly vandalized. I know James (and his mother) pretty well, since East Harlem (El Barrio) was my Assembly district.

I worked with them when they started a tenant's association on 102nd street in 1994, and I went to James's store a lot until he closed it, on 104th and Lexington. I also visited James in his store, down in the East Village.

James even ran for the State Senate in 2004, and rode on my campaign bus! I have one point of information for you. James returned to East Harlem in 1994 from Cornell, when he graduated at age 22. This is confirmed by a NY Times article on his wiki page:

I saw him pretty continuously for about 4-5 years after his graduation. He was a school teacher during that time. Also during that time, he and a woman named Yolanda Sanchez organized a yearly Youth Conference. After a few years (in 1999) it became known as the Muevete Youth Conference, and it will soon have its 13th reunion (as Muevete) this November. Around 1999-2000 James opened his first art store in East Harlem, and I visited him a lot.

He stayed there for 5-6 years, then closed the store and opened another one in the East Village in 2005. He stayed there until last year (2010).

The point I'm making is this: James is a smart and resourceful young man. I credit his energy and ability for self-invention. But there is one sentence on his wiki page, that simply can not be true:

De La Vega has lived in France, Brazil, and Greece where he spent years studying under Jacques Derrida before leaving the Roman Catholic priesthood and returning to the United States.

There is no way that James "disappeared for several years" and lived in Europe and Brazil, since he was in East Harlem and the East Village the whole time, in a highly visible and public way. In addition, I don't see how James could leave the Catholic priesthood, since he was never a priest (and has NEVER spoken about it, in my years of knowing him). Conveniently, James places his "priesthood" in Europe, making it harder to question...but as I already showed you (and all the newspaper articles also show) James's life has continuously been in East Harlem and the East Village.

I have not read James's book, which is listed as the source for this, but I know that James continuously re-invents himself. You don't need to do anything, or even edit it out, but I just thought I'd let you know.

Queering Wikipedia 2021 User Group Working Days: May 14–16

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. As a member of WikiProject LGBT studies, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.
