A kitten for you! edit

Hello Lyn1644 and welcome to Wikipedia! I wish to commend you for the article Fang Guozhen. Glad to see one more editor working on early modern Chinese history. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 20:57, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I’m glad my first articles turned out well. Do you know the best detailed English sources for Chinese history? Right now I’ve been relying on the Cambridge History but have only found a few other sources outside of that (mostly through googling and google scholar). Lyn1644 (talk) 21:22, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Dear @Lyn1644: I am not a specialist in general Chinese history, and I don't know much about English sources on Chinese history. Surely you know that Chinese sources also work as long as they are WP:reliable. That being said, I did a little search in 10 minutes:

These are very nice, thank you. As for Chinese sources, there are two reasons why I try not to use them: Firstly, most people on English Wikipedia probably can't read Chinese, so it is more helpful to readers when a page has more English sources. But more importantly, I can't fluently read Chinese yet. So when I do include a Chinese source, it is copied from the Chinese Wikipedia and only for very basic information. Should be fixed now. I included Dreyer since he was an author of the relevant chapters, but that was wrong. I will also fix the citations for some other articles that use the Cambridge History of Ming. Lyn1644 (talk) 21:13, 24 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

For your passion to dig into history on lesser known figures, and for your willingness to learn and improve your editing. May this barnstar be one of the many you shall receive in the future. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 09:30, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

P. S. Maybe it's time to use sfn to reformat your citations for Draft:Liu Futong and Bolad Temür? Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 09:31, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will do this, as well as for some other articles I've done. Lyn1644 (talk) 22:58, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
How do I use sfn for websites? Specifically for chinaknowledge.de. Thanks, Lyn1644 (talk) 23:16, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Good question. Use {{cite web| ... }} instead of {{cite book| ... }}, and put it in a subsection titled "Websites". You can do the same thing for newspapers (use {{cite news| ... }}), etc. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 23:54, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
How do I make it so that when I hover over the citation it will bring me to the reference? Lyn1644 (talk) 00:07, 10 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
For in-text footnotes, do the same thing as usual. {{sfn|author last name|year}} You don't need to list a page number, but it is good to put a quote. To use a quote, do {{sfn|author last name|year|loc= "QUOTE CONTENT"}}. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 00:09, 10 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is also okay to put websites not in sfn, but directly in <ref> tags. I prefer to use sfn if and only if there is a clear author and a publication date. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 00:11, 10 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much! Your advice has been very helpful and encouraging. I'll definitely continue adding to Wikipedia. Lyn1644 (talk) 22:56, 9 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
