Wikipedia and copyright edit

Hello LordHood2552! While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 16:16, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for December 6 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited South Alberta Regiment, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page AB. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Copyright problem: The Governor General's Body Guard edit

Hello LordHood2552! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as The Governor General's Body Guard, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted material from other websites or printed works. Titles beginning with "the" edit

I noticed you've been moving a lot of articles to add the word "the" at the beginning of their titles. Please note that our practice is to exclude the definite article unless certain specific conditions are met, which are listed at WP:NCTHE. – bradv🍁 04:41, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

March 2022 edit

Hi LordHood2552! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at Canadian Machine Gun Corps that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Meters (talk) 06:12, 13 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Your edits appear to be disruptive and have been or will be reverted.

Please ensure you are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and please do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive. Continued disruptive editing may result in loss of editing privileges. What are you doing? Administrative Corps is not a unit size. Meters (talk) 06:13, 13 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:19th Alberta Dragoons officers edit

A tag has been placed on Category:19th Alberta Dragoons officers indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! Dear LordHood2552, you may wish to revisit WP:SMALLCAT when creating categories. I am having to revert some of them into higher categories, because there are only one or two category members. Do not create soldier-of-regiment categories for only one or two soldiers; they belong in the higher category only. Categories should only be created, in line with SMALLCAT, when there are about 20 potential category member articles. Buckshot06 (talk) 03:09, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Adding of categories edit

Unfortunately you are adding incorrect categories to articles. For example, there was no need to add Category:The Loyal Edmonton Regiment at James Riley Stone [1] because the article already had Category:The Loyal Edmonton Regiment soldiers The articles already had a category that is a subset of that. They are redundant and will need to be removed. If you have any questions please drop me a line. Thanks Buckshot06 (talk) 03:57, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

These are not redundant categories I am adding, just additional ones.
Please Stop interfering with my pages.
Thanks LordHood2552 LordHood2552 (talk) 01:08, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Please reread WP:CATEGORY. Category:The Loyal Edmonton Regiment soldiers is *already* inside Category:The Loyal Edmonton Regiment. You do not need to add both categories, only the more precise one. Secondly, I am editing and correcting use of the category structure, not "interfering," also because they are not "your" pages. I suggest you read WP:OWN; anyone may change any page on this site. Buckshot06 (talk) 01:22, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
To be precise, WP:OWN says "No one, no matter what, has the right to act as though they are the owner of a particular article (or any part of it). Even a subject of an article, be that a person or organization, does not own the article, nor has any right to dictate what the article may or may not say." So you are not entitled to prescribe how these pages read. You're a collaborator just as we all are. Buckshot06 (talk) 01:25, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

IMDB as External link edit

Hello LordHood2552!

Please   stop using the imdbtitle link as I noticed you did at War Story. The reasons for not using that type of link are explained at WT:WikiProject_Film/Archive 79#Masking imdb links as wikilinks. There is a template {{imdb title}} which can be used in the external links section of articles. I've made the change in this case. Thanks. Mike Turnbull (talk) 19:48, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria edit

Dear LordHood2552, I have just had to revert your edit reinserting the regimental crest of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery at 26th Field Artillery Regiment (Canada). JJMC89 bot (talk · contribs) removed the crest because there was no proper non-free content justification given for the crest's use at that page. You need to either avoid the use of this image or insert a proper NFCC justification before readding non-free content. Stop ignoring warnings of policy violation, please. For questions talk to the experts at WP:MCQ. Kind regards Buckshot06 (talk) 09:16, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

now your just making stuff up. The image I included I made sure was properly sourced and was not a violation. The first time it was changed was some mistake. LordHood2552 (talk) 09:37, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
If you had also read on the image that was included, you would see it was NOT the one that the bot account removed. This one has the justification. LordHood2552 (talk) 09:42, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
No, I'm not making stuff up, unfortunately. Inattention to WP:NFCC will get you swiftly blocked. Now, to the point: you've uploaded a functionally identical image with an all-use-available claim, and rolled that out across every RCA regiment you've been working on. If you've got the legal claim stuff right, you are in the clear, as you say. But there's no link to the original image, not url, nothing, just your assertion that the owner has cleared it for copyright. Would you mind please providing a link for the originating page for the image?
Again, thank you for communicating. Believe me, to be a successful editor you will have to do that a lot. Buckshot06 (talk) 11:31, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
fine
take notes of the word Public Register
https://www.gg.ca/en/heraldry/public-register/project/1116
also if you go back and compare the info of the two pictures you will see they are different LordHood2552 (talk) 16:46, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, it clearly says that it is a Public Register - but the intent appears to be for research purposes. Right at the top there is a note saying "The contents of this Register are intended for research purposes only. The heraldic emblems found in the Register may not be reproduced in any form or in any media without the written consent of the Canadian Heraldic Authority and/or the recipient." Where did you upload the consent letter the Canadian Heraldic Authority or the RCA wrote you? Can't see it linked on your userpage. Because of the wording at the /public-register/project/1116 page, that letter needs to be linked at the Commons page of the image. Then that will settle any NFCC questions. Buckshot06 (talk) 23:47, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
these pages ARE for research purposes. what they mean is not to reproduce these images for commercial (aka paid) purposes or ones where the poster can profit from.
These images are in the public domain and considering you are not even from the same country I am, you don't know a thing you are talking about.
enough is enough. You have been deliberately targeting and interfering with my pages for what ever reason and singling me out personally and this stops now. LordHood2552 (talk) 00:26, 22 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
As I linked at WP:OWN, no single user controls any page, including any of the pages you have edited. You have been infringing a number of WP's policies, and this is the second time you have been counseled about copyright, including what appears to be a significant misunderstanding of WP's status: an uploader needs some version of a Creative Commons license or non-free use justification for *everything* on Wikipedia, and you certainly cannot ignore a bold banner immediately above the image you've copied into this site.
I can proceed in two ways: as you will have seen at User talk:Nick-D#User:LordHood2552, I have been advised to go to WP:ANI about the misunderstandings you seem to have about the way the category system works, which you keep reversing despite my attempts to make sure that all articles in most-specific categories, like individual soldiers who've served in the 12th Manitoba Dragoons, only are in that category, not several of the more general, less specific categories, like a category for the 12th Manitoba Dragoons as a whole, also relevant would be your repeated flouting of WP copyright rules, which are necessary to maintain this site's legality under Florida law; or I can help you to become an effective editor here if you cooperate with me. Otherwise what will happen is that you will fall afoul of copyright or category or other infringements at some later date.
I am a little perplexed at your assertion that I am not from the same country as you. Which country are you from? Why do you think I might not be from the same country as you? Buckshot06 (talk) 02:22, 22 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Dear LordHood2552, I consulted with another user on Commons at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Elcobbola. After Elcobbola's advice, I nominated the file for deletion on Commons. His crucial words were that "no evidence of CC-0 status has been provided." The deletion discussion page on Commons is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:RoyalCanadianArtillery.jpg. Kind regards Buckshot06 (talk) 22:55, 26 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

WP:CATEGORY edit

Please take a look at WP:CATEGORY and the policy and guidelines it contains.

WP:CATV says "Apart from certain exceptions [like Highland & Scottish infantry regiments which are also Light Infantry regiments, which would be placed in *both* categories], an article should be categorised under the most specific branch in the category tree possible, without duplication in parent categories above it.

I have been cleaning up duplicate articles placed in up to four categories above each other since the day I first discovered your edits.

As I said, I have been advised to seek WP:Administrator action at WP:AN. That remains an option. Buckshot06 (talk) 03:02, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

this is not regarding the categories (that is a whole other subject altogether). this is about you not only moving information from sections within the articles into others, but also changing the spelling of some of the lines included in them. If you understood the content better, you would know within regimental titles, The is always capitalized and included as part of the regimental name / title. Then there is also the fact of you in some pages removing information that is under different headers and mashing it into other ones (the case of the 15th Canadian Light Horse page comes to mind).
As for categories, I have been trying to reduce the numbers of ones I use that overlap, but taking into account of the histories involved, there is in fact some overlap that I considered relevant for some said categories to be included. Then there is the issue of you changing categories for some pages, most noticeable for pages of former regiments removing the former (insert type) tag, to infantry, cavalry, etc of ones which would seem to indicate these units are in fact still active when they are not (having either being disbanded or amalgamated) into other units.
As for that crack about the first day you "discovered" my edits, this just proved you are going out of your way without cause and any concept of knowledge about the topics involved and clearly have some imagined slight / grudge or even a sense of entitlement against me for whatever reason I can't fathom. LordHood2552 (talk) 03:36, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Great!! We're talking!! Don't revert me, talk to me, much better idea: builds WP:CONSENSUS
We are editing Wikipedia, not an official or unofficial Canadian Army lineage site. You have to follow the site's policies and guidelines. "The is always capitalized and included as part of the regimental name / title" breeches WP:NCTHE, which has twice been pointed out to you before: (a) User talk:LordHood2552#Titles beginning with "the"; (b) Indefatigable..
The former type pages? You also do not appear to be aware of WP:RCAT. The way the Milhist categories work is that units are categorised for their types at the time, under the period name. The article 2nd/10th Dragoons is categorised as a cavalry regiment, and has the establishment and disestablishment dates attached to the article. The redirect, 57th Field Artillery Regiment (2nd/10th Dragoons), RCA is a field artillery regiment. Note we have an entire category of Category:Field artillery units and formations which all the Canadian field regiments need to fit into, which is why the Category:Field artillery regiments of Canada was created. Anyway, 57 FAR (2/10 D) RCA is categorised at the redirect, in accordance with WP:RCAT, as a field artillery regiment.
Rickfive is the absolute expert here, he's busily creating practically every Territorial Army unit that went offshore from the UK in the Second World War and has to deal with hundreds of different redirects. Good person to talk to.
Going out of my way? No. Military units and formations is what I do on this site. I avidly scan the new pages, changes, existing pages, discussions, for changes and additions and add things and edit all over the place. Literally from 201st Corps (Afghanistan) to Fifth Brigade (Zimbabwe).
To operate here, you have to follow the site's policies and guidelines.
In ending, this is a worldwide collaborative website hosted on servers which go back to Florida (court cases are determined in Florida courts). There is not a single stipulation, policy, discussion, anything, which prohibits anyone editing on any subject. Indeed, there's a specific guideline in the opposite direction: people should not "own" articles - WP:OWN. I've had two articles which I dearly cared about, Russian Ground Forces and Military of the Democratic Republic of the Congo delisted from Featured Article status over my objections. Other people - anyone - can make edits to any article. Buckshot06 (talk) 04:18, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

WP:NOTMEMORIAL edit

With some regret, I also have to inform you about WP:NOTMEMORIAL: "Wikipedia is not the place to memorialize deceased friends, relatives, acquaintances, or others who do not meet such (WP:NOTABLE) requirements." At WT:MILHIST there's been previous discussion about long lists of key personnel and how to adjust our editing in response to this WP policy. What it means in effect is that lists of key personnel, like the one I've just removed from the 3rd Battalion (Toronto Regiment), CEF article, are not in keeping with policy. I know; the originals of a battalion that went through the entire war are worth remembering!! But the consensus has been that not to this level of detail - WP:NOTDIRECTORY. Feel free to come to argue your case at WT:MILHIST or at any other forum on WP you wish. Regards Buckshot06 (talk) 01:21, 28 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

not sure why you are telling me this in my talk page. that section on that page was there years before I even signed up for Wikipedia. If you had looked at the page history you would have known that. LordHood2552 (talk) 13:07, 1 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
My mistake then. But you are doing an enormous amount of very valuable work documenting significant numbers of the regiments that this site has previously lacked. So when and as you do so, do thus be warned: don't waste your time adding huge lists of names. If you want to make sure that particularly important soldiers are mentioned, check WP:NOTABLE and see if they measure up, and add details to the article, with references; and adding X numbers died, Y numbers DOW, Z numbers wounded etc is always helpful, with references. Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 00:17, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

October 2022 edit

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing certain namespaces ((Article) and Draft) for copyright violations.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 16:30, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

You've received several previous warnings for copyright issues. Today I removed content you added to Les Fusiliers du St-Laurent that was too closely phrased to https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/services/military-history/history-heritage/official-military-history-lineages/lineages/infantry-regiments/fusiliers-du-st-laurent.html , which is under copyright. If you want to be unblocked, you need to commit to not from copying from sources in your future editing and demonstrate a better understanding of copyright. User:Moneytrees/Copyright blocks contains some advice on appealing this block. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 16:47, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

This was not copyrighted information because it was from a government of Canada source. If you had even looked at similar pages, you would see the exact same information used with the correct citations. some of which had hardly been changed from the main source. Unlike other government sources, Canadian government works are protected under copyright for 50 years from first publication. I did notice that you had previously added the content I removed to other articles; it was only detected just now. I see this as increasing the issue because of how many articles the copyright violation is now at. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 22:35, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
