Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Josiah Rowe! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 2 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. Please note that all biographies of living persons must be sourced. If you were to add reliable, secondary sources to these articles, it would greatly help us with the current 943 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

  1. John Dempsey (lyricist) - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
  2. Dana P. Rowe - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

Thanks!--DASHBot (talk) 23:19, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

I've now added references to these. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 20:30, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

I kinda don't have time to do a proper review today, but I'll try and give it another look tomorrow or thereabouts. If I don't respond ping me—I'm pretty forgetful :) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 14:32, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Dalek Attack

Hi,

I added some info to the Dalek Attack page recently. Being a n00b, I just added the info I knew, so someone with wiki skills could come along and make it fit the Wiki Way. Sorry for the mess...

I changed the word "designed" to "coded" in the section mentioning the programmer for the Spectrum and PC versions, and now it has a "citation needed". I am a first hand witness of the fact. I worked at Alternative as a trainee programmer, and playtested the game (not as fun as it seems) every time a new version came in.

Looking for some info, I came across my name credited to the game (not sure where that came from, as there are no credits on the box, and I was not mentioned in the secret room!). Unfortunately, I could not find a reference to the programmer for the PC version.

How can I supply a citation from a non electronic form?

Hi, Chris. First of all, thanks for updating the page, which was in pretty bad shape before your edits. Every little bit helps. Second, sorry for my belated response here — I was off-wiki for a little while.
Now, about citations and first-hand knowledge. Generally, Wikipedia doesn't like to rely on first-hand knowledge for articles, because even though it may be true, it's not verifiable. It may seem strange, but the rule on Wikipedia is that information should be available for the readers to verify for themselves, and unfortunately they can't do that with your eyewitness account — unless it's been mentioned in a reliable source. Now, that doesn't need to be something that's available online; plenty of print sources are considered reliable, and they're verifiable because the reader could theoretically find them in a library or similar institution. So in this case, the question is where you found your name credited to the game. If it was in a news article or review of the game, that would probably be fine. We could use that as a reference, whether it's available online or not. If you're asking about formatting, the way to do that is to use <ref> and </ref> after the sentence being cited, and put the source information between the tags. If you want, you can use {{cite book}} or {{cite news}} or another template in that family, but it's not necessary; the important thing is to indicate where you found the information, and where an interested reader could find it if they wanted to check up or learn more.
I've responded here instead of on your talk page, because the comment came from an IP address that hadn't been used for anything else. If you want to, you could create an account, to make communication easier (but that's by no means required). I'll drop a note on the IP's talk page, just in case you miss the discussion here. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 17:35, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Kings article - date formats for references

Thank you for your comment. This is one of those areas which has evolved considerably in recent years. The de facto standard used within the Wikipedia community appears now to be to use the international standard for dates, for all the usual reasons, especially for references. The Manual of Style does recommend that existing date formats be retained, especially for regular text, but sometimes an argument can be made for fix-ups in specific areas of usage for reasons of style and consistency. I agree with your suggestion that discussion is often warranted prior to large-scale changes, including mass reverts.Yeng-Wang-Yeh (talk) 11:54, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Again, thank you for your comments. The wide array of opinions on Wikipedia is part of what makes it such an interesting place, especially considering the effort we all put into it for no pay whatsoever!  ;) Yeng-Wang-Yeh (talk) 21:51, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

UCC?

We do know that Obama is a United Church of Christist. He resigned from the Trinity UCC because of the Wright controversy but so we have any sources to say he quit the religion? Maybe there are no sources to say he quit the religion so he still belongs? Often people change churches but most people don't change their religion suddenly.

Is this likely? Original research shouldn't be in articles but we must engage in original analytical thought. Otherwise, if we see a reference that says "Nelson Mandela is an African American" we quote it. If we use thought, we say "hey, wait a minute, he's African, not an African American". In real life, a reporter once did call Nelson Mandela African American and Mandela corrected him (I'm African African).

http://www.oppapers.com/essays/Nelson-Mandela/49852 Nelson Mandela is an African American leader who fought for the rights of his people. Through trials and tribulations he stood his ground and kept on fighting.

I commend you for helpful discussion. Some people in that article talk page are accusatory, incivil and sour. You deserve a barnstar for logical discussion. JB50000 (talk) 04:27, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

I've just started editing and yours is the first username I recognise from other places on the web - probably Gallifrey Base - so I literally just wanted to say hi to a familiar face!

All the best

nice edit

I just wanted to tip my hat for one fine edit on National Organization for Marriage. You managed to put a very important bit of balance into a small space, and RS'd it like a sunovagun. I'm impressed. --Nat Gertler (talk) 05:03, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
