British Empire cats

we have the Category People from the British Empire. I have been creating some broad by occupation subcats. I have also been trying to ensure we populate the by place subcats. Many of these are very under populated. I am trying to avoid too many categories, too small categories, and Category clutter. So far we have writers, historians, poets, journalists, businesspeople, medical doctors, lawyers, sportspeople, artista, male actors, actresses, architects, musicians, nurses, chess players and scientists. We have a hodge podge of by place subcats, with names all over the place. I just realized we have some American colonial categories, in addition to Thirteen Colonies categories. Both US and Canada categories are hugely divided by sub-national unit, and I have no idea how many articles belong there under the British Empire structure that are not. Right now the subcategories of People from the British Empire have no consistent naming convention. Some use of, some use from, and with British India and a few other cases some of the occupational categories use in. Some places in the British Empire are still essentially part of it, so we have demonyms for Bermudians and some other groups. We also have lots of Category names like Colony of Tasmania people. The recent trend has in general been to move more categories to use the People from Foo pattern, but the recent discussion on Cape Colony moved everything to Cape Colony people are subcats replacing people with day Cape Colony dportspeople etc. British India is one of the better developed trees, for a few reasons. However we have British people in colonial India, why is that not British people in British India? British India did not cover Goa and the other small French and Portuguese areas. It covered Pakustan, Bangladesh, and at least some time modern Myanmar and maybe Aden. In the early 19th-century it was less extensive than modern India. The sub-units of British India do not correspond to more recent units, unlike in the US and Canada, although even in the US the correspondence is messy. In India Bombay Presidency, Punjab Province, Madras Presidency, Bengal Presidency and Assam Province all covered wjat are multiple units today. We have a hodgepodge of in and of categories. Some of this reflects the fact that we have over 1000 articles in the British people in colonial India. Some of these people made large contributions in various fields, but the from preposition might not work best.

I've nominated most of these categories for deletion, because they're a pretty trivial intersection (WP:TRIVIALCAT), and not defining. If you wanted them to be a container category, then maybe you could get around not defining. Mason (talk) 18:10, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

What's the purpose of emigrants from occupied Germany cats?

• • The year of emigration is defining when they country has significant changes over time. This falls between Category:Emigrants from Nazi Germany on the one hand and Category:West German emigrants and Category:East German emigrants on the other. The polity which someone leaves as an emigrant, and the polity to which they come to as an emigrant are both defining. So, yes, the year of emigration is defining. The most obvious example is Category:East German emigrants to West Germany, where the same movement at other times would not be emigration at all. The same applies for many other cases. If someone moved from Tirana to Istanbul in 1890 that would not be an act of immigration, it would be movement within a unified country. In 1990 it would be emigration from Albania to Turkey. There are lots and lots of other examples I could give. The time someone moves is defining. While this particular tree is not yet well developed our Category:Emigrants from Nazi Germany is very large.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:02, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
• The year of emigration defines what the act of emigration is. However some movements are complex. Lots of people for example moved out of Nazi Germany, stayed for a few years in France or the Netherlands, and later moved to the United States. Some of these people left Nazi Germany in 1934 and arrived in the United States in 1947. However they were not nationals of France or the Netherlands. So they were not emigrants from France or the Netherlands. They were also not exactly emigrants from Nazi Germany to the United States, since they arrived in the US after the fall of Nazi Germany. Even if they arrived before the fall, it does not quite work. I have decided that in multi-stage migrations just using the Emigrants from Nazi Germany, immigrants to the Netherlands, and immigrants to the United States as 3 seperate categories makes sense.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:06, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
• Emigrants are categorized by the country they are nationals of. Not by their ethnicity. While these at times are related, they are not the same. So Category:Emigrants from Nazi Germany, includes many people who were born in the Kingdom of Hungary (most often when it was part of Austria-Hungary), and other people who were non-German residents of Germany who decided to leave after the new government came to power. There are people who are nationals of a place they have never lived, so for example a British national resident in Egypt who then moves from there to Australia is not an Egyptian emigrant to Australia. The lines between various categories need to be carefully watched. We may have some people currently in Category:German emigrants to the United States and Category:Emigrants from West Germany to the United States, who were really Americans born in West Germany, and not ever immigrants to the United States. The lines between various emigration and expatriate categories often take close watching. Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Category:Grand dukes from the Russian Empire. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. I've noticed that you've effectively made duplicate categories, like Category:Grand dukes from the Russian Empire and Category:Grand Dukes from the Russian Empire. Thoughts on categories

Within the British Empire there were generalized systems of education. I am thinking that we want to use from in almost all cases when a denonym is not supportable. That may be more cases than we have used in the past. I think using from avoids many of the issues with of.

The biggest issue I see is with which exact categories we want to limit to agents of a particular government. That we need to think through closely.

For example do we can That a soldier was a national of France, Argentina, Yugoslavia or The Russian Empire, or do we iy care that a soldier served in the military of those countries, regardless of what country they were nationals of? The same with diplomats. Do we want a Category that tells us someone was a French national, and worked as a diplomat, even f they only worked for Spain, or do we still only count them as a Spanish diplomat because they worked for Spain as a diplomat?John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:30, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

So I'm glad to see that you're thinking about how in, of, and from are being used. But please, see if another category already exists before you start changing all the category names. I've spent a lot of time trying ot clean up your categories, as many of them aren't fully parented. I think a lot of parenting of empires to non-empire related similar named categories is highly debatable. Parenting say Writers from the Russian Empire to Russian writers I do not think is justified.
