Eustrombus gigas once more

Hi there Susan! I've been thinking on how to improve the quality and coverage of the article on E. gigas. I think the sessions on conservation and ecology are somewhat complete. What can be improved is perhaps the anatomical description. Phylogeny is another thing to consider, since it is not even discussed in the article and could be implemented. For both subjects, two references would be enough as I see it. They are: Simone (2005), for a very detailed anatomical description and phylogenetic analysis (based mainly on morphological characters) and Latiolais (2006), for a molecular phylogenetic analysis. The main problem is I can't think of a way to introduce this information in the article without compromising the layout, or making things too complicated for the readers. Also, transcribing strictly scientific anatomical descriptions to a more friendly format for the readers is no easy task, especially for me. Another issue that bothers me in this article is the lack of references in the Taxonomy session. Four paragraphs, and only two inline citations... Next time you can just cross out the note you left me and explain why you crossed it out. I don't mind trying to fix the article up even though it can't be a DYK (I think) because it is already too old (I think), but I am pretty much done with it now. I may come back every so often to check it to make sure that the people who don't want scare quotes around prediction, and who don't want any mention of Clever Hans don't completely erase those things. Well, when I deleted my message, I did explain why in the edit summary, but you are right it was better to cross it out of course. It maybe still could make a DYK as 5x expanded. I asked a DYK admin, let's see what he is to respond. I will let you know. This article has some problems because it is way too popular, and way too many IPs and users edit it. I tried to do it right with the references, but of course now all my efforts are gone. BTW have you heard about this octopus before my message from last night? Well, the article was viewed 9,000 times today, and it seemed as if about 4,500 of those people edited it! If the article is not "stable" (stable = no major editing going on) then the article is not eligible for DYK. People keep taking out my qualifying mark-up. As a malacologist I don't like the idea of apparently endorsing an article that reports that an invertebrate actually cares about or knows about the outcome of human soccer games! I am trying to see if I can find any reliable sources who are saying it might be a hoax or a case of the Clever Hans effect. So far no luck. Invertzoo (talk) 23:51, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I thought about that idea, of requesting protection for the article. But I still would feel better about the article if we could find even one reliable source to say that it is basically a joke, not a serious statement of fact. In any case if someone wants to try to submit it I will not object, and I will try to keep the article cleaned up. It does really need protection though. Slug hitchiker

Hi Zoo,

Hope you are well. I see you've been busy with Paul the Octopus. Today I was searching for Coral Ferns in the local forest. However, I had a hitch hiker on my jacket. Not likely to be as popular as our friend Paul.

As this slug is in the middle of large city (Sydney), it's unlikely to be anything remarkable, unlike the tree dwelling snail which hitched a ride back to town in my car.

As it has two "tentacles" rather than four, it may be a native animal, rather than a feral. In fact, it may be a juvenile Red triangle slug. But there's no evidence of any red triangle or vestigial shell that I can see. It's about 15 to 20 mm long. And presumably it was on bushes about a metre tall, as I (unsuccessfully) searched for the ferns. I'll try again tomorrow a few kilometres away.

If a small animal is kind enough to hitch a ride with me, then I wish to give it due credit.

I'll ask the Australian Museum for identification. But in the meantime, I thought I'd let you know.

Hi Pete, Very cool slug! I am no expert on that species but I reckon for sure this is a juvenile red triangle slug. Take a look at the newly hatched individual on this page: [2]. Dear Zoo,

The Australian museum promptly responded. (They can be wonderful with my inquiries). Indeed, as expected it was a juvenile Red triangle slug. He said "Juveniles lack the typical red foot border and red triangle of the adults but have three dark grey stripes running down the dorsal surface of their body and have the triangular mantle shield outlined with grey."

I feel a bit embarrassed bothering them and you. However, there was a small chance it might have been another species. Particularly as it wasn't on smooth tree trunks and rocks, feeding on algae.

Lately I've been photographing the local ferns. Some of which are practically impossible to identify. There was no trouble with the Coral Fern as mentioned before. Gleichenia dicarpa. And yesterday I wrote my 345th article on a widespread fern, which grows in the desert, and also in the high rainfall areas on the coast. Cheilanthes sieberi.

I gave it a couple of quick go throughs, but I will look at it again tomorrow when I am fresher. I did want to say some things:

• First of all you spell it "Sefer HaTemunah" whereas in the text you spell it "Sefer Ha Temunah". I did not "move" the title of the article yet, in case it is better that way.

• I put the title of the book in italics all the way through, which I believe is the WP convention, but if you think it should not be in italics we can change all of the mentions of the title back to regular type.

• There are a few places where I am not exactly sure what you meant so I couldn't quite fix it up. I may have to ask you about them.

Hi Susan, I knew it will be an absolutely new subject for you, maybe too new to work on it. It is great you are helping me! About the name: In other wikipedia article the name was spelled Sefer HaTemunah that's why, when I created the page, I got this name without even noticing it. In the sources it spells either as I did Sefer Ha Temunah or Sefer ha-Temunah. So I believe the article should be moved to either one out of those two. Whatever move we'll do, I will fix the names in the text myself of course. Please do take your time. I will try this one on DYK, but there are few more days left to do it. • • What is Korets 1784, a book? A compendium of Kabbalah texts? We need to give some indication of what it was or is.
  • We also need to give some indication who R. Kattina was.
  • The sentence: "that the creation as it described in the Bible happened 42,000 (6 (Sabbatical cycles) * 7000 (divine years in one cycle)) divine or 15,340,500,000 (42,000 * 365,250) physical years ago.[1][6][9]" absolutely needs to be made clearer, but I can't quite work out what you are saying there so I can't do it right now.   • R. Kattina is a Talmud personality, if you wish. It is how Talmud is written. "R. Kattina said" is found in many places. I assume he was a teacher or rabbi, but so far it is all I could say. BTW it was a very good question.

Thanks Mila. About R. Kattina, if it is hard to say who this person is, can we perhaps say "the Talmud says"? or is that disrespectful? If so, can we say something like, "the author or authors of the Talmud, personified as "R. Kattina", say"?

We cannot say "the Talmud says" not because it is disrespectful, but because "R. Kattina said: Six thousand years shall the world exist, and one [thousand, the seventh], it shall be desolate…" is an exact quote from the Talmud including the words "R. Kattina said". Update. I asked a friend about R. Kattina, and got a response. He writes:
"Rabbi Kattina was a Talmudic period rabbi, of some importance it seems. A web search gets plenty of hits, but be careful to use good sources. From what I can see after a quick look, he seems to be known for his views on the age of the world."

(intended) Susan, here is the link to the text of the Talmud with the exact quote. Maybe it could be added as a reference, but I am not sure we could do what you are suggesting because we do not quote R.Kattina, we quote the Talmud. Nobody knows R.Kattina. Everybody knows the Talmud. BTW I doubt "R" refers to his first name. I believe it stands for "rabbi". I know it is strange, but it was written in the 3th CE. IMO we should leave it alone and maybe address the issue at the talk page of the article. I don't know how to address the question that was just now raised on the DYK page about whether or not it was Isaac ben Samuel himself who calculated the actual age of the Universe, so I will leave that to you to answer. If it was not him who did the actual calculation then perhaps we can say he "laid the ground work for calculating" or something similar. The bruised ribs are slowly improving, thanks for asking Anna. They are a lot better than they were a week ago. I absolutely try to avoid sneezing, which really is quite horrible! Dentalium shell

Hi, thank you for correcting my taxonomy mistake in the wikiprojects! Could you tell me, most of the descriptions of dentalium shells say the original ones from Vancouver Island belong to the species Dentalium pretiosum; however, I've read that the species is actually called Antalis pretiosum (Wampum tuskshell). Horse conch eating Queen conch

I was surprised to know that the figure-type designated by Clench and Abbot was available online. The book by Filippo Buonanni (1684), which contains a lot of beautiful drawings, can be viewed here. Hello Invertzoo. Just a silly little question. Do you think this is a spam link[3]? It was added to the Spondylus page by an anonymous IP user. I reverted it a couple of times but now am giving it a rest. I may be wrong. It doesn't actually connect to a page selling beads, but it is a commercial site. That's almost all of them. You need to focus on the big picture and avoid details. The summary was almost 760 words before your edits and over 800 words after. An average film summary should be about 500--600 words, and DMFM only rates another 100 words or so based on its complexity. Please try to keep film summaries around five or six words per minute of run time, with up to ten percent extra for mysteries, science fiction, and fast-paced animations. Also, don't say "he had told her" (past-perfect tense) unless (a) he told her before some other event in the past and (b) the specific order of events is important.
