Hello, Hsummermichelle, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Hi! I saw that you uploaded several images that were taken from a fashion show. They were put out on several websites, however these images were still marked as belonging to the company that created them, Fleur du Mal. What this means is that the websites only had permission to use the images in a very specific way, which is to publicize and discuss the fashion show. Even if the images were widely distributed to websites and on social media, the company still reserves all rights to the images.

This means that the images cannot be freely used and adapted by others. In order for an image to be uploaded, it needs to have been released under a copyright that would permit others to adapt and use the images, even for their own commercial purposes. Most content creators will not release these images under that type of copyright, as they would then lose the ability to control how it's used, which could in turn harm their own ability to profit from the image. This would also presumably limit their ability to seek legal action against someone who uses these images in a way that they don't like. A good general rule of thumb is to assume that everything is held under a restrictive copyright unless it's explicitly marked as falling under a compatible copyright. What this all means for the images is that they will unfortunately need to be removed from Wikimedia Commons.

This is a pretty easy mistake to make, honestly, so don't feel too bad. The main thing is that you learn from this. :) I'll ping your instructor Reagle, as he can help explain this in a bit more depth. We also have a training module that goes over the basics of uploading images and media that would be beneficial to take. I also keep a little copyright cheat sheet that I refer to with copyrights, which you're definitely welcome to refer to as well - it can definitely get confusing with the different types of copyright out there. User:Shalor (Wiki Ed), thank you for your help. I also mention this concern on my review of Hsummermichelle's sandbox -- and have recommended the wikiedu tutorial to the class. -Reagle (talk) 19:25, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I looked over your draft. I have some notes:

  • This needs more independent, reliable sources. I've added some, but this needs more to really help establish notability.
  • When writing, make sure that you avoid content that could be seen as non-neutral or promotional. For example, it's better to just write "In 2017, Fleur de Mal opened a boutique in SOHO, New York City" as opposed to including that it was in the heart of Soho. You also want to avoid wording like "amazing", as these are seen as subjective to the reader. If you're quoting a specific individual it needs to be marked as such or otherwise attributed. Be careful of embellishing the article or coming across as editorializing, though.
  • I've re-written the background section and put it below the existing section as an example of a re-write. I would actually recommend that you merge the section on the founder with the background section, as her background would likely be important to the creation of the company. However keep in mind that the article should only include information about her as it pertains to Fleur du Mal. I also tweaked the lead.

I hope this helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:21, 26 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • I've done some work on the page (per the notes above) and added some sourcing to the page. I've moved it live - I think it should be OK now. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:13, 3 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
