Rob Gier

Why was my edit updating Gier's team to Global classed as vandalism? He signed in January for them, and these are squads for March, so he doesn't play for Ascot anymore. The Madras (talk) 17:28, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

No sources say he "signed" for them; either he "joined" or "played" for them. FWIW, he's not here. –HTD 15:05, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
http://www.azkalsfootballteam.com/news.php?id=22 or this http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/gier-beloya-greatwich-lead-new-ufl-faces not count? The Madras (talk) 19:47, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
Has Gier played already for the club? Has he been spotted on the bench? For a national team player, I don't remember him playing. –HTD 22:22, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
Surely it matters where he's signed for the club rather than him actually appearing for them? He's not under contract at Ascot, therefore he's not an Ascot player. He's under contract for Global, therefore he's a Global player, right? The Madras (talk) 20:48, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't automatically mean that if he's not under contract for Ascot it means he's contracted somewhere else. Sports stories are usually explicit in transfers, loans, trades, and signings. A signing explicitly says "signed with Global FC." The Interaksyon story (the other link fails miserably at WP:RS) merely says he "joined" them. This means somewhere from joining pickup games like what Beckham did with Arsenal a few years ago to being bound to a contract; if it is the latter it should say in the story that he "signed" with them, not merely "joined." Sure, probably he joins them in practice. Is he even in the Philippines? There's no proof that he's under contract with Global or any other club. 01:44, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

In The News/Recurring Items

I am posting here to ask for editors to look at Wikipedia:In_the_news/Recurring_items and to comment at the talk page to discuss/vote on an amendment to the ITN/R list. I am posting this message on a number of editor's talk pages to encourage debate.

In connection to an ongoing debate on which items can appear on the front page under "In The News", "Recurring Items" are nominated events which require very little debate in the nomination process.

I propose the following amendment to the current ITN/R list. In addition I will put this on the talk page of as many editors as I can find who are contributors to ITN/C

At Wikipedia:In_the_news/Recurring_items, I propose the following amendment to section 3:

  • At line 5, delete "and", and add after "territories" the words "and the world's twenty smallest nations".

Section 3, Line 5 would then read:

  • Disputed states, dependent territories and the world's twenty smallest nations should be discussed at WP:ITN/C and judged on their own merits.

I look forward to the debate doktorb wordsdeeds 07:29, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Re: Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines

The edit summary space wasn't enough so let me elaborate here. A new Chief Justice would have already been appointed by the President before the retirement of the previous Chief Justice. The new CJ's appointment would have been effective on the day of the retirement in consonance with the Supreme Court's perpetual non-vacancy principle: that is, not a day must pass without a CJ in the Supreme Court.

The situation is different this time since Corona was impeached and Aquino has not named a new justice to fill in the vacancy. Thus, the Supreme Court's ruling to have Carpio as CJ in acting capacity. It would be remembered that Carpio was the Senior Associate Justice rather than Corona during the latter's appointment. So, Carpio could have never been CJ in an acting capacity since then.

It has to be noted that Carpio is the acting CJ now else we will skip a number of days in the CJ table until a new one has been officially appointed by the President. Xeltran (talk) 08:42, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Check out the terms of office. Most of them don't synch with each other. We won't, don't and shouldn't list acting CJs for those. We skip days on this list, and even on the presidential list (Carlos P. Garcia was acting prez for 2 days).
P.S. I dunno when exactly Corona left office. He didn't do so by the end of the 29th (yesterday). It's possible he's still CJ until Carpio was named acting CJ earlier today; hence, he was CJ until May 30. –HTD 08:47, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
We have to present a name, even if that person is in acting capacity, at the end of the table. If you leave a void, like what it is right now, your construing that the position of CJ has been abolished as of May 29, 2012. Presidents and Chief Justice vacancies are different. A President was already elected by the time Garcia was acting pres. Like I said, the Supreme Court is never a day without a Chief Justice. Yes, some days were left off in the earlier part of the table but that was because there was a CJ-in-line, just waiting for his oath. In this case, Corona doesn't actually need to leave office because the effect of impeachment is removal from office.
We can even present it in a way that Carpio doesn't actually need to be placed as CJ No. 24. If you look at List of Prime Ministers of Japan, you can see a line where the Prime Minister as acting capacity was emphasized in order to explain the skipping of dates. Xeltran (talk) 15:18, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
The only way the reader will find out that the position is abolished is by saying explicitly that it is abolished. If doesn't say it's abolished, it's not yet abolished.
Not convinced with other stuff exists. Presidents, chief justices and prime ministers are different. Can you imagine a day without a president? That will be complete and utter chaos! But it isn't there on the list, and shouldn't be.
If is absolutely necessary to present a name, the best that I can accept is a footnote saying that Corona became acting CJ from May 30. That's it. There were several other times there was no CJ as seen on the gaps on the table, and we don't, won't and shouldn't list the acting CJs at that time.
The more important question is when Corona left office. Certainly not May 29, as the article suggests. Must be May 30; unless I missed something that he left office on the 29th. –HTD 15:36, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm amenable for a footnote, we don't need to present Carpio in the same league as the other appointed CJs. The important thing is that there is evidence of continuity. And no, Corona didn't leave office, he was removed. So, from the day the guilty verdict was given, he stopped being CJ. Xeltran (talk) 16:06, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
There is no continuity in sense that someone has to automatically succeed the Chief Justice when it is vacant. The senior associate justice is not like the vice president which automatically becomes the president once the latter dies. There's no provision in the constitution on how vacancies are to be dealt with, aside from the JBC which is the normal course of action. –HTD 16:19, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
As for when Corona left office, I dunno, he was acting as if he was a justice of the SC until the 30th. When exactly? When Enrile announced the result? When Revilla cast the 16th vote? When the Senate delivered the verdict to Corona via the mail? I guess the answer here is when this page is updated. We'd know when Corona left office, and if Carpio deserves to be a part of the table with the "acting" designation.
It's also a better idea to continue this on the article's talk page. –HTD 16:19, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Quick note re: List of NBA champions & apparent vandalism

Just a friendly note to let you know: you made this edit under the reasonable assumption that removing a cited fact constitutes vandalism. In fact, the removal was a good edit. This is the diff immediately preceding the removal; as you can see, the information is false (or at the very least WP:CRYSTAL), and the citation is totally irrelevant. Thank you for keeping watch over apparent section blanking and the like - normally (like more than 99% of the time) this would be a no-brainer of a good edit on your part. ☯.ZenSwashbuckler.☠ 16:26, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Pushing for BrE in MP blurbs????

Please give examples, or have the courage to retract and apologise. Kevin McE (talk) 14:16, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Uh... "Absolute majority" instead of "Plurality"? Or perhaps you'd say that it's not BrE, which I'm gleefully expecting. –HTD 14:19, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
When on earth did I push that? They are not even the same thing. A few days ago I pointed out the agreement that we would use plurality, but with linkage as it is unfamiliar to many people. I might have had some reluctance to the term at some stage (ENGVAR calls for version neutral English where possible, and this certainly does not meet that goal), but have supported it for some time now. Kevin McE (talk) 14:25, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
It's not limited to insisting on rewording (then) or linking (now) the word "plurality," and there are several more instances, but I'm too lazy to look. The internets is expensive on these parts, and I'd rather spend it on more worthwhile activities such as intellectual property theft. –HTD 14:30, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
So you think it's acceptable to make an accusation, try to substantiate it with another false accusation, and then conclude that you haven't got any evidence or any interest in even trying to find any (I think you'd be wasting your time, as I don't believe there is any to find), but reserve the right to throw around the accusation anyway. Maybe you should research slander law instead. Kevin McE (talk) 14:50, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Do you really think I'd spend time and money to appease you? Now if you'd have time and money to go to court, or somewhere else such as via the Wikipedia channels, be my guest.
Anyone doesn't have to go far beyond Talk:Main Page to see some examples, anyway. –HTD 14:56, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Well if you don't have evidence (and you obviously don't), then the honourable approach would be to retract and apologise. Kevin McE (talk) 15:05, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Sure. –HTD 15:07, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. I shall return to thank you further if I notice restraint in terms of off-topic complaints about the presence of Gaelic football ( and formerly hurling) at ITN/R. Kevin McE (talk) 15:14, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Now that one of them is gone (dunno which), there's still one more to go and the process looks surprisingly easy. I won't be subjected to any restraint on my free speech as long as it doesn't affect anybody's personal rights. If it annoys you, don't read it, and don't comment on it. –HTD 15:16, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
I'd just told you which has been removed. I agree entirely with you that you have the right to mention those sports: I just hope, as I've already said this afternoon, that you have the discretion and maturity to refrain when it is irrelevant to the discussion. DYK about the Manila elections

Hi there, and thanks for your work on Manila local elections, 2013 article. I reviewed the DYK nomination for the article... although the hook is fascinating the expansion is not big enough (there must be 5x more text in the main body of the article). The hook's claims are also not all supported or mentioned within the article itself. So I think it probably can't go through unless there is a whirlwind expansion that addresses these problems. Sorry, nothing personal! groupuscule (talk) 02:36, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

The expansion is short by 1,000 characters by I don't understand that the hook isn't found in the article. They're all there. –HTD 02:45, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
OK, I revised my comments over there. The expansion adds enough length. And, I apologize, but I didn't really understand what was going on with the first two descriptions, particularly "gang leader Asiong Salonga". This is my fault for not reading the references carefully enough, but it would be helpful to add a sentence about all the wacky candidates, preferably towards the top of the article. (This would be legitimate based on the references already in the article that discuss all of the candidates and their weird occupations/roles.) Salaam, groupuscule (talk) 03:33, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
It's like this: Alfredo Lim was formerly a police officer, and was nicknamed "Dirty Harry" due to his unconventional ways of fighting crime; Joseph Estrada was an actor, and he played the character of gang leader Asiong Salonga in a 1961 movie. The other candidates' occupations (which are real) are touched upon at one of the latter paragraphs. –HTD 03:46, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
