Longest Ever

Gurch, I hereby award you the Longest Comment on an RFA Ever Award! Congratulation on an excellent, funny, and informative speech. I liked the "Just one final word, as no RfA rationale would be complete without an excessively broad generalization based on the voter's single, brief encounter with the candidate. I once reverted some vandalism to an edit by you, this shows you make edits, which is good." part, that as you said yourself, is needed in every RFA rationale. Lastly, you actually didn't vote! You backed up your reasoning, which everyone should do by describing why thoroughly, not just by "support-good editor". If everyone made comments as long as you, the crats would love it :). Oops, I guessed it's not really lastly. Well, now it is: Lastly, you also didn't vote because you failed to bold anything saying "support." If only we had to do what you did when voting for president. :) Thank you for showing the world how RFA should work. --(Review Me) R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 03:48, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't know if it was the longest ever, actually. I've gone on for a pretty long time sometimes myself. But my comments are boring and serious, so yours win hands down. :) Regards, Newyorkbrad 04:35, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ads

I added three, and they are not showing up properly. Could you please help? Miranda 12:14, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Heh, just spotted you were the main authour for the template. No intent to offend you, but yes, I abhor banner ads (and other intrusive style internet ads) with a veangance. Thanks for cleaning up my wording on the template page. I think it's useful to include some instructions for my fellow banner haters :) I've had a pretty bad couple of weeks with my computer system, having to rebuild from scratch, so I was probably a bit over cranky when I got a blinking banner on somebody's talk page. I'll go and tone down my css content a bit. Cheers. --Cactus.man 17:07, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Yep, fair points. I think you've done a great job with the template, but it's nice to give users a choice to view or not. Your revised wording on the template is good - nice and simple, neutral and informative. I think that's a good outcome, I'm sure you would agree. I've got my Firefox installation pretty heavily configured against most web intrusions, but if I could get an extension that filters out userboxes ... well. Now, there's a project. OTOH, sometimes they can be quite an amusing read in moderation, so a switchable extension would be dandy. --Cactus.man 17:29, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Still working with Ads?

Hey Gurch, I was wondering if you could help me in creating a Ad for a new project, I was lookin for user Qxz and since I was redirected here I assume you are him. The Project is WikiProject:Reggaeton, I am not interested in the music genre but the Project needs projection and since it seems like its going to survive a Micellany for Deletion discussion, it needs to find more members, thanks for you time. - 21:35, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Possibly. I won't do anything until the deletion discussion has finished, though – Gurch 11:56, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I will contact you when its over. - 17:03, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Any chance of a reconsideration

Hi Gurch, I understand you had an issue with another editor or two at another RfA and that that may have influenced your decision here. I am not one to badger !voters so I have not added to the to and fro so that if you wished to stand by your decision to vote neutral that was ultimately a matter for you. However considering I was not a party to that situation and in the hope that things may have calmed down - I was wondering if you would reconsider your position to a more supportive one before the conclusion tomorrow? Best wishes --VS talk 13:40, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

"I am not one to badger !voters", you say, while badgering the only neutral voter on an RfA with 98% support and no opposition. Hmm – Gurch 14:01, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
  • I hope you can get over your inner anger Gurch. I have noted your response in the public space and have thus responded there also. Let me know when/if I can assist you in the future.--VS talk 22:23, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Secure server?

Hey gurch.
I saw you mentioning the secure server (secure.wikimedia.blahblahblah). As it so happens: I have no bloody clue what that is. :D
But it sounds interesting. Problem is, I couldn't find any info on wiki about its secure server. Have a link? Bladestorm 00:40, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Gurch is probably asleep now, so hopefully he won't mind if I tell you that the link is here. You may wish to bookmark it. GurchnotesT § 01:55, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I think he knows where it is, but was wondering what it is. Essentially, you can browse the English Wikipedia as usual (or another project, by changing "wikipedia", or another language, by changing "en"), via a secure connection (https). On a wiki, where everything can be read and (in most cases) edited by anyone, there's not much call for secure connections, but some people are concerned their passwords may be intercepted when they log in; apparently that makes up for the fact that it's awfully slow compared to the usual way. There is probably some information somewhere, though I don't know where – Gurch 08:52, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm too lazy to copy the full thing from my talk page, so: Thanks a bunch, both of you. :D Bladestorm 14:09, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Qxz Ads

How do I create those Qxz Ads?--  PNiddy  Go!  0 15:18, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

First, you get hold of an image editing program that can create animated GIFs (unless you want to make a single-frame one, in which case you only need to do a PNG). Then you decide what page/policy/practise/process/project you want to make the ad for, and make it. Then you upload it under the next available "Qxz-ad#.gif" filename, where # is a number, and edit the ad template and overview pages so that it shows up there.
If that sounds like too much work, you ask me or Miranda or someone else to make one for you :) – Gurch 15:23, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Gurch, I think you might want to make a new version of this ad. I sense fair use violation. Image:Qxz-ad63.gif. Miranda 02:06, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Scrollbox

Why did you remove the scroll box? If it was ever needed it is need on this article. TonyTheTiger 15:44, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

See Template:Scroll box, which includes the following message:
Warning: This template should not be used in main article space, as it renders any content obscured within the template unprintable. This is especially true with text content, such as citations, according to a June 2007 discussion.
The deletion dicussison linked to shows a clear consensus that references should not be contained in a scrolling box, as a template that did just that was deleted – Gurch 15:53, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Apartheid wall -- note AfD decision

Apartheid Wall is a disambiguation page as a result of an AfD. Please watch for changes which try to make it into something else without discussion. A recent edit by Jayjg (talk · contribs) had the deceptive edit comment "fixed", for a major, controversial change to the article against the AfD result. You then semi-protected the article. Please check the history of the article. Thanks. --John Nagle 17:23, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

No, I didn't semi-protect it. I'm not an administrator, for a start. It has been semi-protected for some time. All I did was categorize the page correctly (into Category:Semi-protected redirects). My previous edits were simply an attempt to create a stub rather than a disambiguation page that didn't actually disambiguate anything (by merit of having only one item in it) – Gurch 16:44, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

July 2007

This is your only warning. The next time you make a personal attack as you did at User:Duff, you will be blocked for disruption. Comment on content, not on other contributors or people. Gscshoyru 15:41, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

"Personal attack"? It's a statement of fact, nothing more. If you're going to go after someone for personal attacks, how about those who support banning him in the first place? – Gurch 15:42, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
According to the block log, he isn't banned. So either there's something wrong with the log, in which case I apologize, or you are in fact making a personal attack. Gscshoyru 15:45, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
I've been given evidence [1] that this isn't the first time this has happened... I can't exactly see your reasoning for doing so, but according to this [2] it may not be totally malicious. My warning perhaps should not have been such a high level, but you really shouldn't do that. Gscshoyru 16:15, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
The user is banned. Please see their most recent contributions, for example hereGurch 16:43, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Ah. Now I see what you're doing. You're pointing out a flaw in the way Wikipedia and another program interact, in a way that has effectively blocked Duff, though his username itself is not blocked. I apologize for jumping to conclusions, though you must admit from my standpoint it was pretty damning... and I still think there should be a better way to protest this. But I apologize for being so harsh. Gscshoyru 16:49, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
It's not a flaw in the way Wikipedia interacts with anything. There are no technical issues here. The problem is an idiotic policy that was not decided on by the community and which goes completely against Wikipedia's philosophy of openness and pseudonymity. There are better ways to protest it, but none of those work either. As a result, constructive contributors are being banned, not to mention checkusered in violation of the privacy policy. This "policy" prohibits 20% of the world's population from editing the "enyclopedia that anyone can edit". The excuses given are that it cuts down on vandalism (so what? schools vandalize for more, but we only block anonymous users in such cases) and that there is a chance people might use it to have multiple administrator accounts at once (despite repeated reiteration of this "problem", there is absolutely no evidence that this has ever happened or is likely to happen, and with or without this "policy" there's nothing to stop it happening anyway).
"The free enyclopedia that anyone can edit" is more "the free encyclopedia that you can edit if SlimVirgin approves of it". Sad. – Gurch 16:57, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Ok, policy rather than techincal issue... that's what I meant. 20% of the world? Ew...
Yeah... I understand now. I totally misunderstood what the intention was of the edits. I apologize for well... not assuming good faith. Which I perhaps should have. I'm not going to take sides on this issue, because I don't know enough as of yet, but it's a viable issue and Gurch's edits were a form of protest, so to speak. It would be good if there was a way to have both anonymity and the ability to block ip vandals, but this seems to be difficult, if not impossible. So no hard feelings, right? Gscshoyru 17:10, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
No, it's not difficult. Tor IPs can be blocked anonymous-only, with account creation disabled, just like any other IPs. No anonymous vandalism would be possible; potential vandals would have to create an account elsewhere first, which we would then block directly. We've been doing this for years with school IP ranges and it works perfectly. Yet the FUD over "anonymity" and also "admin sockpuppets" (again, something for which there is no evidence, at all, of even a single isolated incident, let alone a persistent problem) appears to be working – Gurch 17:19, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
  • I also would like to apologize, for believing that you were inserting the template to a user not banned while he was acutually banned. TomasBat 22:16, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
I read more of the stuff and I see that it was a protest, and that the user is not auctually banned, but has the IP blocked, meaning that the user is welcome to edit from another IP. Still, my apologize, since you were trying to help Duff and not to attack the user. TomasBat 01:17, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Use of edit summaries

"Misuse edit summaries"? Pah. How about we try not misusing policies? – Gurch 16:46, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Bans and blocks and templates

Gurch, regarding the ban templates on Duff's userpage, he isn't banned. A ban is when the community gets together and kicks out a specific editor due to disruption or exhausting the community's patience. It's actually different than a block, which enforces a ban. See Wikipedia:Banning policy. He's also not blocked. Rather, he is autoblocked because he is on a tor and/or a proxy IP. I realize the tag was meant in part to protest the situation, but it might annoy the person (Duff) who is subject to this autoblock and, regardless of that, is not appropriate in this case. Thanks.--Chaser - T 00:51, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

The user is banned. Please read the definition of a "community ban" in Wikipedia:Banning policy:
There have been situations where a user has exhausted the community's patience to the point where he or she has been indefinitely blocked by an administrator—and no one is willing to unblock them. Users blocked under these circumstances are considered to have been "banned by the Wikipedia community."
This user has been indefinitely blocked by the idiots who enforce Wikipedia:No open proxies, and no administrator is willing to unblock them. They are therefore "banned" under this definition.
The user is hardly going to be annoyed by being labelled as "banned", since that's the term they used themselves. Please see their most recent contributions, for example hereGurch 09:09, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Gurch, please stop politicizing what happened with Duff. Duff has maintained a very mature approach in dealing with a very frustrating problem, and unless you are acting with his/her blessing, you're out of line. First, there is no action any individual administrator could take that would resolve the situation: unblocking an IP would be a temporary solotion that would literally only last a few minutes, until Duff's IP address changes again.

But more important: regardless of whether or not it's "true" that he/she has been "banned," it's not up to you to determine whether or not that is displayed on his/her talk page. Duff is perfectly capable of editing that page; if he/she wants such a tag, fine. But it's not your page. -Pete 13:16, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Actually your IP did vandalise a while back which is why you were warned. However, it's quite possible that other users share your IP and so these edits were not made by you. If you wish to avoid receiving further warnings that don't apply, you might like to consider creating an account. Will (aka Wimt) 21:15, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

The edit that the warning pertained to was this one from back in March. Of course, as I said to the previous IP, it's quite possible that the edit was actually made by someone else who shares your IP. Hello Gurch. I've temporarily reverted your edit to WP:OP, which changed the redirect target from the WikiProject to the newly renamed policy. I mentioned this to another editor who also proposed deletion of the Savannah State University/to do‎ page; the page is generated by the {{todo}} template. Sorry it's not animated; it's all I can do for now – Gurch 23:35, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, it looks great! Just two minor problems, the text should be Blu-ray Project, not wikiproject and can you put small text at the bottom that says click here for details or something. If you have any spare time we wouldn't mind if you animated it. Again, it looks awesome!--Playstationdude 23:57, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Template

What template did you use to warn about Chat room. Dolive21 09:05, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

I didn't use a template; I use my own wording in warning messages. You are free to copy it if you wish – Gurch 16:26, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

User talk:ShotgunSanches block for 24 hours

Hi there, thanks for pointing out what I guess must have been obvious to all but me. I'm a very new admin, and don't want to jump the gun. I'll unblock and reblock ASAP. Bearian 00:20, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Someone else beat me to it! Bearian 00:21, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Indeed they did. Don't worry about it – Gurch 00:22, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Someone vandalized my Userspace!   But a little angel came along and fixed it!   Thank you!Tiptoety 00:32, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Rest assured I have more useful things to do than thank others (not sure what I'm supposed to be thanking them for, anyway) – Gurch 00:34, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
