The block is no longer necessary because I now understand what I was blocked for, I will not do it again, and I will make productive contributions instead

Accept reason:

Per this extended talk page discussion. Sockpuppets, links to disambiguation pages, ignoring talkpage messages. Please don't do these again. Otherwise, good luck with your future editing. Euryalus (talk) 21:19, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

I've used that time. My block is indefinite (see above), but I understand your confusion. The template that announced the block was removed because it was inaccurate, but not replaced. Gob Lofa (talk) 22:48, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

@Ohnoitsjamie:, could you re-review based on the above? I did indeed indef-block. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (Message me) 22:51, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
I retracted my unblock answer. Though I see you've made lots of constructive edits, your block history shows a troubling lack of interest in following policy. I will note in your favor that your other account seems to have managed to not create any disambig links. You're going to have to specifically address both issues (block evasion and ignoring bot messages that urge you to clean up messes you've inadvertently made). OhNoitsJamie Talk 23:20, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
Works for me. Gob Lofa (talk) 23:52, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
Do you mean address them here? I thought first you meant in my future activity. I have no intention of setting up any more sockpuppet accounts. I had no idea they would be taken so seriously when I wasn't using them for contentious edits or influencing debates/votes etc. I've no problem heeding the bot messages in future and fixing those links, as I wrote above I had been under the impression the bot had fixed the problems it referred to. Gob Lofa (talk) 13:26, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Better than heeding the bot messages would be using preview and such so that you never insert dab links in the first place, then there is no reason for a bot to notify you, and no reason for you to return and commit yet another edit to the same article. Elizium23 (talk) 14:24, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
That makes sense. Gob Lofa (talk) 14:47, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Current block aside, on the topic of addressing your editing issues, please would you read or reread the Wikipedia link guidelines. The reason I left you the message above about your missing edit comment was to prompt you to consider why you would edit an article solely to link the words "sediment", "sand" and "estuary". These are everyday words that the majority of English readers would be familiar with and since Wikipedia is not a dictionary, the links are unnecessary. Moreover, they are not germane to an article on the subject of prehistoric footprints. Multiple links make articles harder to read and are a distraction —they should be used judiciously as part of the skills required by a Wikipedia editor. I suspect that many of the disambiguation issues you created were the result of linking generic words (which tend to have multiple uses) and were thus non-productive in the creation of an encyclopedia. This is not meant to be a criticism of your enthusiasm for Wikipedia but please bear in mind the goals of the project. Good luck, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 16:02, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

I for one am happy that you've made it back to the land of the living. You're a decent chap and a pretty constructive editor, from the little I have seen, and I think this little incident gave me an unfairly negative first impression of you. Thank you for not just giving up but making the effort to understand and be understood so that you can continue with a productive career here on the project. Welcome back. May 2014 disambig contest: let's do it again!

Greetings fellow disambiguator! Remember back in February when we made history by clearing the board for the first time ever, for the monthly disambiguation contest? Let's do it again in May! I personally will be aiming to lead the board next month, but for anyone who thinks they can put in a better effort, I will give a $10 Amazon gift card to any editor who scores more disambiguation points in May. Also, I will be setting up a one-day contest later in the month, and will try to set up more prizes and other ways to make this a fun and productive month. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:48, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Unionism

From your history here you are more than familiar with the way Wikipedia works. You inserted a broad statement without any supporting references and it was reverted. That means you have to go to the talk page to make a case. In fact, although there was collusion between Unionist paramilitaries and some parts of the British security forces that is not the same thing as saying they were engaged in a joint campaign. If you really think you have a point make the case on the talk page and I will respond there. ----Snowded TALK 16:50, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

IMOS

A consensus emerged with respect to referring to the island and the state in other contexts:

  • Use "Ireland" for the state except where the island of Ireland or Northern Ireland is being discussed in the same context. In such circumstances use "Republic of Ireland" (e.g. "Strabane is at the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland").
  • An exception is where the state forms a major component of the topic (e.g. on articles relating to states, politics or governance) where "Ireland" should be preferred and the island should be referred to as the "island of Ireland" or similar (e.g. "Ireland is a state in Europe occupying most of the island of Ireland").
  • Regardless of the above guidelines, always use the official titles of state offices (e.g. "Douglas Hyde was the first President of Ireland").
  • Per the Linking guideline of the Manual of Style, the names of major geographic features and locations should not be linked. If it is thought necessary to link, in order to establish context or for any other reason, the name of the state should be pipelinked as [[Republic of Ireland|Ireland]].

The Morris Tribunal, doesnt not mention Northern Ireland or the island, it is to do with with internal matters of the state, so why do you keep adding it? It happen near NI? Really is that a reason? So can you show where there is consensus for your edit? Murry1975 (talk) 11:41, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

You don't seem to be as familiar with the proceedings of the Tribunal as I would like. Some of the guards transported explosives across the border. At least one witness contended the guards conspired with the RUC in this endeavour: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/soc.culture.irish/6-KcUe7V1Zw Why are you talking about consensus, is there a discussion on this topic I'm not aware of? Gob Lofa (talk) 11:59, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Obviously you are not fimilar with it, its the exact extract from WP:IMOS. And there are many. You are now aware of it, and I see its not the first bit of consensus ignoring, with disruptive edits, you have been invovled in. Murry1975 (talk) 12:06, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
You seem to be confusing the Tribunal proceedings with the IMOS. Gob Lofa (talk) 12:09, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
What are you on about? Murry1975 (talk) 12:14, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
I wrote "You don't seem to be as familiar with the proceedings of the Tribunal as I would like." You then wrote "Obviously you are not fimilar with it, its the exact extract from WP:IMOS.", ignoring the point I made about the Tribunal's NI aspect. Gob Lofa (talk) 12:24, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Personal knowledge to do with an article doesnt in any way over-ride any consensus on here, as I pointed out I quoted the exact piece that pertains to this, and you ignore that fact and introduce a link that isnt a RS or in the article, further more the use is contextual, "is being discussed in the same context" so even then the topic would have to be cross-border, or the use of both be on a par. Niether of which they are. Murry1975 (talk) 12:31, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
I don't agree with your interpretation. Gob Lofa (talk) 12:36, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
If you dont agree bring it to IMOS. Stop ignoring guidelines. Murry1975 (talk) 16:34, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
Bring your interpretation to IMOS? What would that achieve? I'm not ignoring anything. Gob Lofa (talk) 17:00, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

March 2015

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Unionism in the United Kingdom. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. While edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount and can lead to a block, breaking the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a block. If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection.

A slow edit war is still an edit war. You have not answered objections on the talk page and are inserting your opinion. Please stop doing that or it will end up as a formal report ----Snowded TALK 00:00, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Your hypocrisy is surprising; I've been waiting to have my objections on the talk page addressed since November. Have you advised the other party to the slow edit war of the possibility of a formal report? Gob Lofa (talk) 00:31, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
You are currently in a minority of one. Several editors have explained the issue but you are not listening. You have also been told about general restrictions in respect of any article relating to the Troubles. But in case you didn't follow it through here is the link ----Snowded TALK 03:35, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Harassment

Kindly stop harassing me on my talk page. If you continue to do so, I will be reported the matter to ANI. I have repeatedly answered all your questions on Protestants of Ulster and Billy Fox talk pages. The discussion went on at the length to no clear outcome. I see no point in rehashing it. Snappy (talk) 17:24, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

You've answered damn-all. If you keep reverting my edits and refusing to explain your reasons, you hardly expect me to just take that lying down and it's a bit rich of you to do this and then squawk about harassment. I don't care where we have this discussion, but if you persist in your behaviour I'm determined to have it. Gob Lofa (talk) 17:42, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
I've answered every question from you on multiple occasions, it's all there on the talk pages. You just didn't like my answers. We won't be repeating this discussion because we've already had it. Don't question my behaviour or threaten me. It now appears because you haven't gotten your own way, you are resorting to bullying tactics. Snappy (talk) 18:13, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
I don't know who you're trying to fool but your lie won't stand up to even the most cursory examination. To give just one example, I asked you repeatedly on the talk pages mentioned above what was the point of view you kept referring to. I'd ask you to point out where you answered that question, but that would be pointless because you didn't. Either defend your contentious edits or stop making them. It's not rocket science. Gob Lofa (talk) 20:54, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
I asked you to stop harassing me, yet you continue to leave abusive messages on my talk page. Don't threaten me and don't tell me what to do. Snappy (talk) 19:29, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Threaten you? Gob Lofa (talk) 20:47, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Edit-warring caution

Your and Snappy's edits to Unionism in Ireland constitute edit-warring. You are both experienced editors and should be respecting WP:BRD and taking the issue to the talk page not reverting back and forward. Mabuska (talk) 19:37, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

I have found Snappy to be unusually reticent when it comes to defending his edits, to a degree I've never come across before. Nevertheless, I'll give it another shot. Gob Lofa (talk) 20:27, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
At least you responded and took action by opening a talk page discussion. I've seen no further response to the issue by Snappy. Mabuska (talk) 22:35, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
In his defence in this particular instance, he seems to have been inactive since. I'll wait for a response before I edit the page again. Gob Lofa (talk) 23:22, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Keeping an eye

Not intending to sound like a threat or offensive, but I will be keeping an eye on your edits from now on. I and several other editors of differing persuasions have noticed that your edits contain hints of POV that is detrimental to articles. I suggest adhering to a neutral POV and providing credible and verifiable sources for your changes. Mabuska (talk) 23:38, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

I'd really love to nail down what this point of view is. Gob Lofa (talk) 17:03, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Protestants of Ulster

As someone from the Protestant community of Ulster and someone from the liberal and rationale arm of unionism I find your edits to this article to be highly POV and in many ways deceptive and quite inaccurate. Please try to abide by a neutral pov as well as avoiding what appears to be a possible issue of owning an article. If others add a tag to an article you do not own the right to remove it when you have not addressed the reasons for its addition in the first place. Also remember WP:VERIFY. Mabuska (talk) 23:57, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

What point of view? Gob Lofa (talk) 16:14, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Ta for the heads-up. Gob Lofa (talk) 17:53, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

I see that you are still receiving numerous dablink messages. I also see that you now go back to the relevant articles and correct the links, which is obviously much better than just leaving them, as you used to do at one time. However, in April of last year Elizium23 suggested that it would be better to avoid the problem by always checking the links you place before saving them, rather than going back alter to correct them, and you answered "That makes sense", yet more than a year later you are still not doing that. I can think of a number of reasons why it would be better to check links before you save them, including the following. (1) It would avoid the unhelpful link remaining in place in the article during the time it takes for the bot to check the link and report to you, followed by the time it takes for you to get round to reading the message and responding to it, which in some cases has taken several days. (2) Because you would check every link before saving it, you would also avoid the risk of other unhelpful links, such as links which simply link to a different topic than you guessed they would link to. (3) It would in the long run save you trouble, as you wouldn't have to keep going back to articles you have edited and correcting the links. Really, the bot message on disambiguation links should serve two purposes: to help new editors who don't know any better, and to help experienced editors who do know but occasionally make a slip; it should not be used regularly by an experienced editor who knows full well to avoid dablinks.
