In the News! On April 9 at 07:42:41 (UTC), Soyuz MS-18 successfully launched from Baikonur Site 31 with Oleg Novitsky, Pyotr Dubrov and Mark T. Vande Hei arriving at the ISS 3 hours later to join Expedition 64 members. April 12 marks the 60th year of human spaceflight, since Vostok 1 launched in 1961 with Yuri Gagarin onboard. April 12 also marks 40 years since the first space shuttle launch. STS-1 spent 2 days, 6 hours in space in 1981 landing on April 14. On April 16, NASA selected the SpaceX Starship Human Landing System for crewed landing on the Moon. On April 17 at 01:34 (UTC), Soyuz MS-17 departed from the ISS and landed at Kazakh Steppe over 3 hours later ending Sergey Ryzhikov, Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Kathleen Rubins mission of 184 days and 23 hours. Also on the 17th, Expedition 64 on the ISS ended marking the start of Expedition 65. On April 19, the Mars helicopter Ingenuity completed the first powered flight using atmospheric lift on another planet. Earth Day came around for another year, 51 years after it was first held on April 22, 1970. On April 23 at 09:49:02 (UTC), SpaceX Crew-2 launched at LC-39A with Shane Kimbrough, K. Megan McArthur, Akihiko Hoshide and Thomas Pesquet arriving at the ISS 1 day later to join Expedition 65 members. Michael Collins who was the Apollo Command Module pilot, dies on April 28, 2021 aged 90. On April 29, China launched a Tianhe station core module to low Earth orbit, starting a 2 year effort to build a space station.

Michael Collins Michael Collins was an American astronaut who flew the Apollo 11 command module Columbia around the Moon in 1969 while his crewmates, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, made the first crewed landing on the surface. He was selected as part of NASA's third group of 14 astronauts in 1963 and flew in space twice.	Image of the month. Recent changes

• Twinkle is a gadget on English Wikipedia. It can help with maintenance and patrolling. It can now be used on other wikis. You can get Twinkle on your wiki using the twinkle-starter GitHub repository.

Problems

• The content translation tool did not work for many articles for a little while. This was because of a bug. [1]
• Some things will not work for about a minute on 5 May. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This will affect the content translation tool and notifications among other things. This is because of an upgrade to avoid crashes. [2]

Changes later this week

• Reference Previews will become a default feature on a number of wikis on 5 May. This is later than planned because of some changes. You can use it without using Page Previews if you want to. The earlier plan was to have the preference to use both or none. [3][4]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 May. It will be on all wikis from 6 May (calendar).

Future changes

• The CSS classes .error, .warning and .success do not work for mobile readers if they have not been specifically defined on your wiki. From June they will not work for desktop readers. This can affect gadgets and templates. The classes can be defined in MediaWiki:Common.css or template styles instead. [5]

Good night GeneralNotability, I saw that I was mentioned here, however, as you probably noticed, I have no relationship with this MarquinhosWikipediano. In my contributions, this is the first edition since December 2020. Perhaps I was mentioned because my account had a different name until March 27 of that year (my full name). In February I asked to globally rename my account so that it had a shorter username, but as there was a Commons account with that name, it was necessary to wait a month for my account to be effectively renamed. My English is bad and, since I don't speak Portuguese, I had to use the translator to write this message, but I believe I understood what I meant. • Following an RfC, consensus was found that third party appeals are allowed but discouraged.
• The 2021 Desysop Policy RfC was closed with no consensus. Consensus was found in a previous RfC for a community based desysop procedure, though the procedure proposed in the 2021 RfC did not gain consensus.

Technical news

• The user group oversight will be renamed to suppress. This is for technical reasons. You can comment at T112147 if you have objections.

Arbitration

• The community consultation on the Arbitration Committee discretionary sanctions procedure was closed, and an initial draft based on feedback from the now closed consultation is expected to be released in early June to early July for community review.

Recent changes

• There is a new toolbar in the Reply tool. It works in the wikitext source mode. You can enable it in your preferences. [6] [7] [8]
• Wikimedia mailing lists are being moved to Mailman 3. This is a newer version. For the character encoding to work it will change from UTF-8 to utf8mb3. [9][10]
• An earlier issue of Tech News said that the citoid API would handle dates with a month but no days in a new way. This has been reverted for now. There needs to be more discussion of how it affects different wikis first. [11]

Changes later this week

• MediaWiki:Pageimages-blacklist will be renamed MediaWiki:Pageimages-denylist. The list can be copied to the new name. It will happen on 19 May for some wikis and 20 May for some wikis. Most wikis don't use it. It lists images that should never be used as thumbnails for articles. [12]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 May. It will be on all wikis from 20 May (calendar).

A request from a blocked editor for talk page access to be restored

Hi, General. On 9 November 2020 you removed talk page access from indefinitely-blocked editor Core2012. (In my opinion you were totally right to do so.) After waiting 6 months, the editor has now posted an appeal at UTRS. What the editor says in that appeal is not, in my opinion, in itself enough to unblock, but it goes a good deal towards being more like a reasonable appeal than any of what they said in their talk page before you removed talk page access. The UTRS appeal also says "Please reinstate my talk page access so that I can appeal my block". How do you feel about reinstating talk page access? JBW (talk) 21:32, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

JBW, I see you went ahead and restored TPA (sorry, I've been pretty busy and haven't had much Wikipedia time the past few days) - for the record, no objections here. I too have doubts that we will get a productive editor out of this, but I feel there's just about enough of a possibility that it's worth giving them a chance to prove us both wrong, in view of the change in approach shown in the UTRS appeal. Hey! Not challenging your close, I am trying however to learn more on SPI and relevant policy. Why did you state that this is not sockpuppetry? Doesn't Wikipedia:BADSOCK point-6:

"Contributing to the same page or discussion with multiple accounts: Editors may not use more than one account to contribute to the same page or discussion in a way that suggests they are multiple people. Contributing to the same page with clearly linked, legitimate, alternative accounts (e.g. editing the same page with your main and public computer account or editing a page using your main account that your bot account edited) is not forbidden."

apply in relation to Draft:Ethide Laboratories edits? This also potentially avoid scrutiny as non-admins can't easily see who previously created speedy deleted articles, and multiple recreations of promotional articles is grounds for reporting and blocking.--Eostrix  (^{🦉 hoot} _hoot🦉) 06:02, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

Eostrix, as a rule we don't consider the use of multiple accounts to be sockpuppetry if they aren't used at the same time and aren't actively pretending to be different people. The general assumption is that they lost access to their account, forgot their password, something like that. In this case, the last edit of the older account was 3-4 days before the first edit of the newer account. There are limits to this, of course - if someone switches accounts right after getting several warnings and then resumes their problematic behavior, that's evasion of scrutiny and will probably earn them a block. Eostrix, exactly. Now, sometimes they're obviously the same person but trying to pretend that they're not (my personal favorite is when someone makes an obvious autobiography, it gets deleted, they get warned for making autobios and they subsequently create a new account that totally isn't the same person), and that isn't something we look at favorably...but as long as they're not evading something and aren't pretending they're multiple people we'll let it slide. Recent changes

• The Wikimedia movement has been using IRC on a network called Freenode. There have been changes around who is in control of the network. The Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts have decided to move to the new Libera Chat network instead. This is not a formal decision for the movement to move all channels but most Wikimedia IRC channels will probably leave Freenode. There is a migration guide and ongoing Wikimedia discussions about this.

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 May. It will be on all wikis from 27 May (calendar).
