RE: Double Eagle II

Geoffrey, thanks for jumping in and adding a lot to Double Eagle II! Normally we put prose ahaed of list, so I moved the text up (make it more Wikistyle). I added 12 Wikilinki's to your new text. Please give the twice over.

This sentence is awkward:

• "The crew made a landing at Le Bourget Airport, the landing site of Charles Lindbergh, their objective, but they were running out of ballast, and it looked risky to try to negotiate through the obstacles ahead. They landed in a field of barley, owned by Roger and Rachel Coquerel."

But I wanted to consult with you first, and hopefully get the facts. The first sentence implies that they "made" it to the airport. While the second says that they fell short. Can you add how far the field was from the airport? Something like this:

• "The balloon crew wanted to repeat what Charles Lindbergh had done in 1927, and land at Le Bourget Airport. But running out of ballast they felt that they could not negotiate through the obstacles ahead. They landed in a field of barley, owned by Roger and Rachel Coquerel, two-miles short of the airport."

Or what ever the distance is. Since you added that "some were never found" and "Two British adventurers" we might want to name those individuals. What do you think?

LGBT Opposition

I wrote this for the Svend Robinson page, but had second thoughts about posting it there. In light of your recent change to the 2004 CHP candidates page, I'll post it here instead:

Geoffrey,

Let me preface my remarks by saying that I've been aware of your political career for some time, and that I can remember CPAC's interview with you in the 2000 election. Even though I strongly disagree with the CHP's position vis-a-vis gay rights and with many particulars of your remarks in the present discussion, I'm willing to accept that you regard your position as both well-intentioned and a reflection of your fundamental religious beliefs. I'm also going to take the view that you're willing to listen to reason as regards the management of Wikipedia.

First, let me address the "LGBT rights opposition" category. This category has existed on Wikipedia since late 2004 and, to the best of my knowledge, has not occasioned very much controversy since this time. Most of the entries are American, and their opposition to LGBT rights is both well-known and acknowledged by all participants in the public debate.

The present controversy has been started by an editor using the name "Bill38", who has entered the CHP and other Canadian groups/people into this category. I will fully acknowledge that some of "C38"'s choices have been dubious, and perhaps ill-informed (for instance, s/he listed Bev Desjarlais in this category solely because of Bev's opposition to the actual Bill C-38, even though her record on other issues is pro-LGBT). For that matter, I've disagreed with some of C38's actions on other matters: his/her decision to list Ron Gray on vfd was extremely petty, and runs counter to Wikipedia's accepted policy on covering party leaders.

Regarding the CHP and the "LGBT rights opposition" category, however, I have a hard time finding fault with C38's logic. As I understand it, the term "LGBT rights opposition" refers to persons and groups who oppose the rights of LGBT individuals (and couples, and organizations) to maintain an active and equal presence in civil society as LGBT individuals, couples and organizations. There is no question that the CHP fits into this category. Whether or not members of the party "hate" homosexuals on a more personal level isn't really the point at issue. (Your comments indicate that you don't. I'm not sure the same can be said of all other CHP candidates.)

My second point concerns the "Free speech opposition" category. Based on how the "Categories for deletion" vote is going, most Wikipedians seem to regard this is a POV exercise -- and they're right. I doubt that a category of this nature could possibly be managed in a NPOV manner, given the myriad of interpretations as to what "free speech suppression" actually is. (Would a civic official who shuts down a Klan rally be fair game for inclusion, for instance). It's true that some people in Canadian political circles regard Svend Robinson as an opponent of free speech, but this is only an opinion, and not the sort of thing that should lead to formal categorization.

If you have a problem with the "LGBT rights opposition" category, there are a number of different options you can take: you can suggest it for deletion, you can suggest that the title be changed, or you can clarify that there are divisions within the category (and I see that you've already done the last of these). Creating a dubious category in response, however, is the wrong way to go.

I'll ignore your comments on "unhealthy behaviour" and "normalization" for the purposes of the present discussion, though my opposition should be noted here as well. CJCurrie 01:19, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

As you may know, Wikipedia has a policy against autobiographies, so it is probably best if you do not edit the article yourself. Unless it's a real hatchet job (in which case I'd ask a friend to consider making any minor corrections), I would have no objection. In regard to that topic (2004 Cdn fed elec candidates), I can't recall clearly, but I may have primarily modified it by adding the other 56-58 candidates' names, sans sub-articles, and structuring it for the 3-4 people who already had some kind of detailed entries.

User:Huaiwei has created category:political entities, and moved many categories previously grouped under category:countries, such as dependent territories, to populate this new category. Interpretation or not?

Dear Gcapp,

please have a look at Christian Heritage Party of Canada and speak up whether you think of the following sentence:

"... the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms acknowledges "God" (in their interpretation meaning the Judeo-Christian God) in its preamble."

I think the term in parantheses is superfluous and POV, since it declares something to be an interpretation which IMHO is not an interpretation but obvious. However maybe you, as a Canadian know better. Also this might have been discussed before, though I have found nothing on it.

To me, as a Christian and as one astute in history who knows the religious inclinations of the Fathers of Confederation, I know which God they meant when they wrote that paragraph: the supremacy of God. However, I am content to abide by the majority consensus of the Wikipedians as to the inclusion or not of the term in parentheses, since it can become a bone of contention. The Bill Brady and Hong Kong tussles distress me, and I don't think this is a big enough issue to get into a tussle over. Few religions capitalize God to indicate a single deity, and Judaism and Christianity are two of the best known mono-theistic faiths. GBC 04:57, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

It was done after the high school burnt down but before the new one was constructed and should be just to the left of 19b. Other than that it looks OK. Quebec Route 109

Thanks for contributing info on Quebec route 109. But did you know that the section from Matagami to Radisson is not considered part of this route? It used to be part of rte 109 (and most maps will still show it as such) but it is actually municipal now and route 109 ends in Matagami (it goes to Amos and beyond). They were considering whether to run in the next election as independents or for the Liberal Party. Mr. McRobb has always been a bit more of a non-conformist and independent-minded. Mr. Hardy decided to expel them from caucus. The two schools of thought are: (1) he's removed a trouble spot and created a more united caucus to face the next election; (2) he's alienated a significant block of NDP support and doomed the NDP in the next election. Time in Canada

Just to let you know that all the communities in the Kitikmeot Region are on Mountain time and have been for at least the last 32 years, which is when I arrived here. For some reason I have never been able to find a correct Time Zone map. Even the CIA map is wrong and shows the eastern Kitikmeot as Central time. Thank you for Terra Nova expedition

Gday Geoff. I wanted to say thanks for cleaning up my haphazard handiwork on the Terra Nova expedition. If you are a 'keen' Antarctic history buff there are some wonderful photos of Scott's huts at Cape Evans and Hut Point over at the entry 'Scott's hut'. Hmm, perhaps I should go there first and make sure I didn't leave a mess behind there also... I have been tinkering with the Robert Falcon Scott entry (mostly in the 'debate' section) but will go back there soon - the Terra Nova entry has made it fairly clear that Amundsen's foray into the Ross Sea was not a simple 'breach' of the protocol of 'separate spheres of exploration', as the Norwegians had been there a couple of times already. Talk:Boston Tea Party

Howdy, I noticed that you and I seem to post in one or two articles dealing with progressive issues in political science/sociology. There's currently a debate beginning in Boston Tea Party as to whether the article should include the category [1]. It meets definitions set in the articles Terrorism and Definition of terrorism, however, there are several self-proclaimed patriots who watch BTP who refuse to recognise the fact. The simple criteria for terrorism generally seem to be intimidation or destruction of property in order to change public policy or public opinion while a state of war has not yet been declared. Some users would rather use recent acts of terrorism as a yardstick, rather than using a firm definition, and hence lose their ability to discuss matters calmly. Old Settlements

Couple of things. Ennadai still puts out weather and is available here or here. Now looking at it I thought that it was an Automated Surface Observing System (AWOS) but I'm not so sure. If you go to here you can see that Ennadai is listed while no other AWOS is. So it may be that some weather is being put out by Ennadai Lake Lodge. There are things missing from the observations that would be easy to do with the AWOS but would need a bit more training for a human, such as cloud height and visibilty.

Resolution Island had a Distant Early Warning Line site that was turned over to the Canadian Government in 1974 which is why it had a telephone exchange and still produces limited weather. But why there would have been (if I read your comment correctly) multiple listings for the site is odd. The DEW line site here is run by Nasittuq Corporation and have only two numbers, one of which is a fax, listed in the phone book. There is third but that is for the helicopter pilots and is not listed. They also have their own phone system which is seperate from the Northwestel lines. We have a red phone at the airport with which we can access their circuits in an emergency. The numbers are in the format XXX for the Cambridge Bay site and XX-XXX for off-site numbers.

Based on living in Ulukhaktok, Northwest Territories in the the late 70s when we first got phone service. The four-digit number system would suggest calls within the site would be fine but calls out of site or into the site would require going through Bell's operator. This was the same system we had and worked fine until you wanted to make an overseas call. From our arear you got the Bell operator in Montreal and they had a very hard time with the fact that we only had 4 digits. Well, I remember visiting the public library in my then-home town of London, Ontario, where they had a complete collection of phone books across Canada. Resolution Island was listed and they had almost as many phone listings as, say, Cape Dorset or Broughton Island (Qikiqtarjuaq today), and they were residential listings as well as a few businesses. I didn't look to see what those businesses were - I just took it to be another Arctic community with a Here Before Christ store, RCMP detachment, some government offices and such.

As to four-digit numbers, phone companies actually assigned a "mark code" to each community to make a seven-digit number. I am surprised that the Montreal operator did not have one for each Bell Canada community in the east; in the west, in Ulukhaktok, you would have gone through the Northwestel/CN operator in Hay River, Fort Nelson or Whitehorse, who would have been fully aware of the mark code for each community and marked the call on a ticket, even if the connections were made by an operator in Montreal. That is, the Nwtel/CN operator would mark the call for billing, but dial 514 and a three digit sequence to reach the Montreal operator, who would connect the call but not do billing. Ulukhaktok, then Holman, was, I believe, 403-111- and four digits. (Spence Bay was 403-148, Pelly Bay was 403-149, Gjoa Haven was 403-150, Snowdrift was 403-165. 403-396 was used in Hay River until 1978. I'm not sure what Paulatuk was, maybe 403-136.)

Resolution Island and other Bell communities would also have their own mark codes in 819 or even 418 area codes (it was 418 prior to the late 1970s); Pangnirtung was 437, but changed to 473 when it became dialable.

Mark codes were and still are used for international calls; Pitcairn Island does not have a country code, so national telephone services use a mark code to indicate it so that the computer knows where it is and can apply the appropriate rate and show it on the bill with a place name. The same for Western Sahara, Guantanamo Bay (from the US, it can be dialed 5399, but the rest of Cuba is non-dialable), some places in Antarctica. Many other places that had a mark code in Canadian telco records have since obtained country codes and are now able to be direct dialed, such as Greenland, Christmas Island, St. Helena, Carriacou, Turks and Caicos Islands (the latter two +1 then area code 809 at first). For some strange reason when we talked to the operator in Montreal if we said 111 and called it a "ringdown number" they knew what we ment. I was in Spence 1974-1975 but was able to make the overseas callls without any problems. It was the Northwestel in Hay River that was our first contact.

It just dawned on me. I wonder if what you saw in the phone book was Fort Resolution, Northwest Territories rather than Resolution Island. They would have both been in the NWT but of course in different phone books. with Fort Res in the Northwestel and Resolution Island in the Bell? book. No, I am completely certain there was an additional settlement with the name Resolution. It abruptly disappeared around the 1980-1983 period... in fact, it is noticeably absent from a list I painstakingly compiled around 1980, going through each of those library phone directories and marking the prefixes used in a list by area code. Resolution Island did not come up (I kept separate notes of non-7-D exchanges). GBC 17:16, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I think the mark code for Paulatuk was 191, and another community (Sachs Harbour?) was 187. For international, I think codes Canada used before country codes were assigned included 011 for Greenland, 005, 006 and 007 for Australian offshore territories, 013 or 015 for Guantanamo Bay, and I don't recall any others with precision, though I believe Turkish Cyprus might have had a code as well. Area codes

I saw your edit to Area code 867 and reverted it on a temporary basis, as I felt it needed some sort of category. I was intending to come and discuss it with you then got distracted. I thought about it and was going to go with "Area codes in the Canadian Territories" similar to the media category. Then I thought that "Communications in (territory name)" might be better as it could include postal codes and the phone company. However, I looked in our phone book and then checked the other categories and Category:Area codes in Manitoba, Category:Area codes in New Brunswick, Category:Area codes in Newfoundland and Labrador, Category:Area codes in Nova Scotia, Category:Area codes in Prince Edward Island and Category:Area codes in Saskatchewan are all single area codes as well. So right now I think they probably would be best as is. Or another way would be to have "Area codes in the Canadian Territories", "Area codes in the Maritimes" and "Area codes in Western Canada". Alberta has two and BC has three (604 and 778 are in one article).

I also have a question for you because you worked for the phone company. Nunavut has 3 area codes. Eureka, Nunavut has 613 as a fax only and 204 as voice and I think fax as well. Alert has no telecoms link, as far as I know. It is too far north for geosynchronous satellites (Eureka is the limit). They're probably in the AUTOVON system or some sort of secure hi frequency network. Theoretically, it could be 867. Since it is strictly military, there is no need to a connection to the civilian network. However, there are locations, with military support but which are civilian, like McMurdo in Antarctica, that are not direct dialable (if New Zealand and Australia can make their Antarctic bases dialable, why hasn't the USA?). Thanks. Then based on that I would guess it's also 204/613 because while looking it up I found a 1970s reference to the better phone connections after Eureka got updated. I actually got a reply from them telling me to contact the inquiries officer in Calagary. We have todays equivalent to the AUTOVON here, I can call our local North Warning Site, a few other places but mainly the Flight Service Station in North Bay if our regular phones go down. If no one diagrees or you come to a consensus to replace then replace the image and nominate the existing map image for deletion at WP:IFD as obsoleted by your map.

I'm sorry that this response has been so long in coming, but I have been in China where it is virtually impossible to reach Wikipedia through the "Great Firewall". The map's source is as stated on the information page, namely Online Map Creation, which states that its maps are "still free". I've created quite a few. Anyone can. Also, anyone can modify them using Paint (I use that, too) or whatever graphics manipulation software they have. If you have a more accurate version of the line's route to Whitehorse, I suggest that you simply upload it with exactly the same filename and overwrite the old one. Because they haven't played yet. One of the primary rules here is you don't copy/paste from other sources. Every single synopsis posted there thus far has been done in our own words and at least half of them have been personally done by me. I admit I jumped the gun in your case, but I've seen people 'fake' synopsis before (in fact here's an example that, ironically enough took place just today), and you don't just put down a title and a copied synopsis and say 'well I'll just fill in the rest later'. At best that's lazy, at worse that copyvio. My source for Caitlin Ryan's date of birth is the pilot episode for Degrassi: The Next Generation. In it, Emma Nelson, when she meets up with Caitlin, reveals herself to be such a diehard fan of hers, that she even blabbed her date of birth back at her, the date I wrote on Caitlin Ryan's page. This is the previous map. As you can see, the curve at the north end puts it way off into the boonies, nowhere near a river, which was the point of building the line to Whitehorse in the first place: to link up with river steamers. I felt the map did a disservice to information. [2]

Regarding your reversion of my edit to White Pass and Yukon Route. Following WP:NFC#Legal position if the source is post 1978, then it is still likely copyrighted. Since the book cover's photo date is unknown we have to assume it's from the book's date, 1982. The image is not eligible for use in the article. — Is this thing working? This might actually be more relevant since the work was apparently printed in Canada: Wikipedia:Public domain#Country-specific rules. Again the work may still be copyrighted, depending on year of death of the photographer (currently, Template:PD-Canada could be applied if he/she died prior to this date in 1961). Old English Wikipedia

(It's rare for me to trespass on the English Wikipedia unless tagging or replacing pictures uploaded to Commons...)

That was your message over at ang:? The Old English Wikipedia is a smaller project with a select bunch of editors because there are few speakers about. I see it as an educational project; we can all learn screeds of Old English from the poems and texts left to us by our ancestors but the Wicipedia makes us stretch ourselves to make that language come alive.

Picking new words for concepts then unknown is pushing the boundaries a bit, but it gets you thinking; a rare commodity amongst Wikipedians.

There are no native speakers left, although on occasion I find myself thinking in Old English for a phrase or two; sometimes it has the best expressions. There are a great many re-enactors about who re-eanct life and battles of the age, and some of them get into it more than just dressing up and camping for a week or so; you should see their homes! This is much the same for language; live it and speak it and you come to understand it better and bring it to others.

There are more many motives for building the OE Wikipedia than there are users. The language is part of all of us who are descended from the people of that age and a cultural jewel; in the Dark Ages, English was the only living language in Western Europe to be written down, as everywhere else they used degraded Latin, as if their own tongues were somehow inferior, but no one of us will let Englisc be seen as in anyway inferior to any Latinate tongue. You could cynically say "there is a Latin one so there must be an Englisc one".

As to audio samples, they will be somewhere on the web (the Woruldhord project might have some) though in every case it is a best guess. The accents of the West Country shires, Someset, Dorset, Devon etc, seem to be a good guide to West Saxon pronunciations, as their use of vowels matches very well what we see in writing. For audio samples, you can look on YouTube (though most of them have lackluster pronunciation, according to every single variant of reconstructed OE phonology I've seen - some are okay, though). A question about Image:OntarioAreaCodeEvolution.JPG: It looks from the way this was drawn that Windsor, Ontario was originally in area code 416? The text of the 416 and 613 articles has the pre-1951 boundary somewhere west of Kitchener, Ontario to dump most of the province into 1-613.

No, this is the "concept" shown on a 1947 map. The early code boundaries were not rigid for all time, but more of a general nature. Remember that until 1958, not a single Canadian could direct dial long distance calls, so area codes were not in the public consciousness. A person in Ottawa calling London or Toronto or Kitchener would simply be asking the operator to place the call, and giving the local five-, six- or (by the mid-50s) seven-digit number. The operator would connect into that city's operator and give the called number, which would then be rung and the final connections made for the caller. Later, the operator would be able to dial the area code and a three digit number to switch into the distant city's operator centre to request the called number.

Customers would only have become aware of the area code once DDD became available, if not to that customer, in the area, and as numbers were standardized to seven digits (either ANC - All-Number Calling - or 2-5 numbers - two letters and five numbers such as GLadstone 5-1234). "(416) Metcalfe 2623" (a London phone number) or "(416) Ilderton 2-K-24" (an Ilderton phone number) are not numbers you would ever have seen printed or heard quoted - 416 would not have formed part of the number.

It is possible that many or all of the 1947 boundaries for area codes were based on the long distance operator lines, possibly in combination with population patterns of the time. Toronto might have been the point where nearly all calls in southern Ontario were routed through from points further away, and it might have been expected that the 416 area code would have enough capacity for points to the southwest but not much more, hence the boundary, and 613 would be enough for the remainder. California in 1947 was divided into three - north, central and south, the boundaries running from the sea to the inland border, but around 1950-51, the northern two thirds was realigned to have one code for the coastal portion (415, where you would find 707 and 408 in the 1970s) and one for the inland (916, where you would later also find 209 in the 1970s).GBC (talk) 14:42, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi Gcapp1959: Sorry to trouble you, but I could not help but notice your expression of affection for TOS on the Wikipedians who like Star Trek: The Original Series page, and so I would be curious of your thoughts on the notability of a Star Trek author for whom I just created a Wikipedia article -- which may be promptly destined for the trash pile. As a newcomer here at Wikipedia, my first article attempt was indeed recommended for deletion within hours of its creation by a senior user named JzG who seems to me to be overly hostile and dismissive of Star Trek, calling it fancruft (= trivial, obscure, of importance to just a tiny group of fanatics) . Since you are a Trek fan, if it is also your good faith opinion that my subject is in no way deserving of an article on this site; and you could let me know, I would feel much more comfortable with the justice of the pending deletion action. Candid assessment: the article has merit, but I am not sure the best way. I think JzG is being too zealous. A much wider consultation would be merited. There surely are articles on Wikipedia that concern people much less prominent. Perhaps you could cover more about this writer, putting in references to other writing work he's done that is not directly related to Star Trek, establishing his credentials as a writer.
