India page needs to have more pictures edit

I see that Ganeshk has reverted the changes I made to the Geography section (I had added two pictures) with a comment that map should be enough.

I have used Wikipedia for quite some time now and it my observation that India page has the least number of pictures about India compared to similar articles and hence makes it one of the tedious reads because of that.

Please take a look at articles on the United States, Japan, France, and Pakistan. They leave a better impression than the India page. They have what one may say "A country in pictures" - and India has what one might characterize as "A Country as one might describe in text" (and as one can see, it takes longer to say that too).

There needs to be more than an academic map (that makes hardly any impression - if at all). We need pictures that give some idea on what it is to be in India. India is one of the oldest human settlements, and it needs to have more than 10 pictures (3 of which are maps) to show for all those millenia.

Please do not revert the changes.

I intend to add more pictures to other sections as well.

PS -Does anybody have pictures of Akshardham? They should make an excellent addition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nareshkumar.pj (talkcontribs) 08:53, 12 November 2006

User:Ganeshbot/Created: Bongaigaon edit

Hi. In created list, there is "Bongaigaon (there is a quotation mark at the star - typo?) which is in red. The article Bongaigaon exists (created before Ganeshbot was in function). Also, in User:Ganeshbot/Not created there is Bongaigaon as User:Ganeshbot/sandbox/Bongaigaon48. There might have been some mistake. Please see. Grammar edit

The grammar that Ganeshbot outputs is awkward. "As of 2001 India census" should instead say "As of the Indian census of 2001" or "As of the 2001 census of India". Kaldari 23:37, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

It was using Wikipedia:As of technique. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:27, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
You shouldn't sacrifice good grammar merely for the sake of a link list. Besides, it seems the "As of" technique is on it's way out anyway. If you really want to use the "As of" technique, at least make the prepositional phrase unambiguous. For example: "As of 2001, the census of India reported that...". Personally, I don't think you should worry about the "As of" technique anyway, since all of those census figures are going to be updated by bots anyway. Do you really think someone is going to see them all listed in the "As of 2001" list and decide to update them all by hand? It seems pretty unlikely to me. I'm sure when the next census of India comes out someone will be clever enough to write a new bot. Maybe that will even be you :) Kaldari 07:39, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ganesh,

I'm here with a request reg the WP India template. Could you please make this following change??

In the image needed section, the current display info is

An editor has requested that an image be added to this article.
Once the requested image is added, remove the image-needed parameter.

Could you please de-personalise and change it as

An image is requested for this article as its inclusion will substantially
increase the significance of the article. Please remove the ''image-needed''
parameter once the image is added.

Thank you. Cheers. -- Chez (Discuss / Email) 01:24, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Indian politician images edit

I would like to understand your rationale behind tagging all Indian politician photos with {{Replaceable fair use}}. Much hard work has gone into uploading those photos. When a replaceable image is found, the fair-use image can be deleted and new image used. But deleting all the images makes no sense to me. These are photos owned by the government of India. They should rightfully release all the photos like the U.S. government does. I honestly don't believe using them as fair-use is a violation of Wikipedia image policy. Can you please revert your edits and have a discussion first? -- Ganeshk (talk) 17:22, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

They are indeed a violation of Wikipedia image policy, at least for any politician who is still alive. Please see WP:FUC. We are not permitted to use copyrighted non-freely-licensed images to depict living people. --Yamla 17:26, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Yamla. Let me check the relavant policy. I have still asked guidance at ANI per below. -- Ganeshk (talk) 17:34, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I went through WP:FUC. I could not find the specific sentence about living people. Could you please quote the relavant sentence? Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 17:43, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
The very fisrt criteria states: "No free equivalent is available or could be created...". If, for some of those people, it is impossible to create a free image, the unfree image is not in violation of this criteria. You may want to check Wikipedia:Fair use for a explanation of the policy. Specially, item #8 of Wikipedia:Fair use#Counterexamples. Best regards, --Abu Badali 17:49, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

You should be aware of this request on ANI. -- Ganeshk (talk) 17:34, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

It is sad to see you continuing to tag fair-use photos for deletion without proper discussion. [2] and [3] for examples. -- Ganeshk (talk) 17:49, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
For a lot of discussion on the matter see Wikipedia_talk:Fair use. For a very similar case see Wikipedia_talk:Fair_use/Fair_use_images_of_Canadian_politicians. Let me know if you need any further help. Best regards, --Abu Badali 17:55, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you follow #1 strictly, there would no reason to allow for uploads on Wikipedia. Images add value to articles. It is not always feasible to find free-images all the time. What do you expect from #8? Do you want the politician to be dancing? -- Ganeshk (talk) 17:52, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
You may want to express your views on dancing politicians in Wikipedia_talk:Fair use, instead of my talk page. --Abu Badali 17:55, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dear Friend,

Languages of India are NOT too trivial to be ignored.Heck, you can´t ignore it for the sake of being concise. Try to understand and respect sentiments of Indian people. India is NOT Hindi, it is a multi-lingual, multi-religious tolerant democracy. Food for thought : Remember the Anti-Hindi protests of 1965. Already India is being publicized as "Land of Hindi" by Hindi Fanatics, please don´t feed such stereotypes. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GovindaR (talkcontribs) .

Does Wikipedia has a 'tab key' function? edit

Dear Ganesh, I was just wondering if you know whether in Wikipedia you can put spaces between words like how you can do it with the tab key on MS Word. For example:

  • Apple Ball Cat
  • Dog Elephant Fish

I used the space bar to separate the words above but it doesn't have any effect. Do you know if the Wikipedia allows tabbing? Thanks. AppleJuggler 11:21, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

You can do in the following two ways. Edit this section and see the code. -- Ganeshk (talk) 06:42, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Dear Ganesh, I received your examples on how to do the above and the link to the help page on Tables. request and your reply to it copy pasted from 'User:Ganeshbot/Requests' page edit

Your work of putting all Indian cities/tehsil/block on wikipedia is of immense value. Can you modify the bot a bit and put the list district wise as the state wise category tend to be very big this is esp true for bigger states e.g. [[Category:Cities and towns in Uttar Pradesh]], and such big categories can't be used optimally. If it can be automated then it better else it will be very difficult for users to put these cities/tehsil/block district wise manually and may not be done at all and if after this is done (through automated script) one wishes to put cities/tehsil/block of smaller states (Delhi, Goa etc) in state wise category that can easily be done manually. Your comments please. Thanks. Vjdchauhan 11:53, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
