Good thought. The reason I did it that way was to keep from having to reuse the same word over and over ... one of my tricks for keeping a reader interested from my newspaper days. Perhaps I should make it clearer that it's a contraction (Ditto for the AT ... it's usually standard policy around here to put any abbreviation you expect to use in parentheses immediately following its antencedent).

References in 52 article

I don't think he meant references in the route description so much as in the other parts ... history most importantly. That's where these articles are going to make it as GAs or FAs.

Don't let them get you down: I saw their most recent comment, and what shows up as lists (two examples) are lists only, where what you have up are expanded lists. In my opinion, each bullet item in the history has brief prose with it. So I guess the bullets need to be taken out and the whole thing worked into a paragraph. Thanks for getting back so quickly (hope you didn't end your WikiBreak too soon). Impressive that it was relatively easy. Now what I did was create 920J (which is signed at 29A per its old routing, article forthcoming) but, as I'm sure you'll see, it displays as Helvetica again. So the primer item "Convert the text to a path and save as a basic SVG" - again, I'm on a Mac and perhaps the fonts aren't translating correctly. InkScape, when downloading the template file, uses a font called "Bistreatm Vera Sans" and changing it to Roadgeek C is not just a process, it's a project (that may be because the application is running under OpenSource X11). I suppose getting the actual numbers in the correct font to "stick" as the images they are will be the challenge. For what it's worth, though, the template shows up in that unusual font, also-check that against the other markers. Fwgoebel 23:36, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

The reason that the shields, when uploaded, end up in a screwy font (Bitstream Vera Sana) is that Inkscape does not have the ability (yet) to embed font names into the core code of the SVG. Even if it was embedded, the Wikimedia servers would have to have the Roadgeek fonts installed for the SVGs to render right, and I don't believe the servers have that font. I use Inkscape as well for my images, so I know this problem all too well. To circumvent this, the text has to be converted to paths prior to saving the finished product by selecting the text, going to the Path menu and selecting Object to Path. This will convert the text object to a path that is completely independent of fonts. The shield should then display correctly upon uploading/viewing in a browser like Firefox 2 or IE7.

The reason that the template is displayed in the weird font is that I uploaded it using text on purpose, as it allows the end-user to easily change the numbers to the desired route, convert the text to a path, and reupload.

All I needed was what menu command was how to convert it to a path, so if you take a look you'll see that it's now fixed (thank you). Given how far away un-articled touring routes are for me (SW St. Lawrence County isn't exactly next door!) reference routes will follow: That will include routes near my upbringing with which I'm familiar, plus several near where I now live. The New York State and County Route WikiProjects Newsletter Issue 001 – December 2006
Intro Issue The Beatles WikiProject has been running a newsletter for some time now to great success, and, after some consideration, I've decided to launch a similar effort for the New York County Routes and New York State Routes WikiProjects. This could prove to be a very effective medium of communication between the members of the groups, and with increased communication comes the possibility of increased production. For the most part, this first issue will be a "dry run" of sorts, to work out any bugs in the system. The first serious issue with permanent sections will most likely be January's issue. Nothing as elaborate as the Wikipedia Signpost is planned, but the amount of information that will be found here will more than make up for the lack of framework.	From the Editor This is a work-in-progress and likely will be for some time. As we get settled with a format, I'll begin to make some improvements to the barebones structure and give a little more life to this page. DOT Beat Plans to reroute New York State Route 63 in Peoria, Covington, Wyoming County (15 miles southeast of Batavia) were unveiled on December 6. The project will eliminate a sharp curve present in the center of the hamlet, rerouting NY 63 along a new alignment to the north. Details will be finalized by Summer 2007 and construction will commence in Summer 2008. NYSDOT conducted a meeting on November 29 with Binghamton-area residents about the future conversion of New York State Route 17 to Interstate 86 from Horseheads to Binghamton. Topics of note included improvements to exit 67 (New York State Route 26, Endicott) and alternatives to exit 68, an eastbound exit only leading to Oak Street in Vestal, among which was the closure of the exit. New York State Route 23A, closed from Palenville to Haines Falls since June when record rains caused a retaining wall to collapse and give way to a mudslide, was reopened on November 22. During the time that the road was closed, numerous upgrades were made, including the replacement of culverts, upgrading of drainage systems along the road and the repair of both the collapsed wall as well as the existing retaining walls. Project News Remember to vote on next month's project featured article! Articles needing cleanup can always be found at Category:New York State articles needing work. Both state and county routes needing cleanup are fed into this category. Articles on reference routes are now being created in large numbers. As a general reminder, use {{Infobox NY Reference Route}}, link to your new article on the List of New York State Reference Routes and Parkway Routes, and, if you need a reference marker made, see TwinsMetsFan or Fwgoebel. Likewise, articles on county routes are also being made in impressive numbers. When writing these articles, be sure to abide by the guidelines on the project page, to maintain a consistent feel across all of the articles. Missing shields for county routes? See TwinsMetsFan or Northenglish. County routes in New York was recently created. Pictures of actual county route shields are greatly desired and needed. Also, if possible, some additional text and history about county routes in New York State would be welcome. New York State Route 11A remains the lowest active route without an article. The lowest decommissioned route with no article is New York State Route 7C. New York State Route 52 was, unfortunately, not qualified enough for Good Article status due to a lack of references (full report). Any references that can be added to the article, particularly the history section, are greatly appreciated. There are routes still lacking mileposts. Member News One month ago today, Fwgoebel came on board to the project and, in the time since, has contributed over 50 new articles on touring routes and has added to dozens more, including helping in the effort (along with JB82 and TwinsMetsFan) to convert all usages of Template:NYSRInt to {{NYint}}. Jaycees presidents

Wouldn't it make more sense to just post a list than have dozens of one-line articles with no content? It looks like you have no information beyond a name for most of them, so what's the point of a separate article? Personally, when I'm reading an article, and click on a link, and find there's basically no new information at all when I get to that page, I find it annoying. Fan-1967 06:19, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

A stub article is a start, something on which someone else can expound. In the example of the USJC Presidents, each of them has to have served as a National VP, State President, and with that very likely a host of other offices held, that can be added as information is made known. That is an essense of a wiki - "What I Know Is". Besides, when a past National President has the same name as someone else of note, even a stub article can be a source of differentiation. See the discussion at Talk:United States Junior Chamber where I proposed that we create a project. The main reason for creating all of those was to illustrate that wikifying a name wasn't the creating of an article (and I hopefully showed another how a succession of office table worked). I won't protest speedy deletion. What should be done is to de-wikify the list of presidents with the exception of those who had their own articles. The issue that was at hand was that a few of them were namessakes for others. I didn't do a revert because with other things being edited and added to the main article, I didn't want to inadvertently delete valid content. Fwgoebel 15:59, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I mean those map things can be great if you want to determine exact mileages. But it's a drive of the roads themselves that can bring things to proper alignment. Check out [1]. I direct you there because the lowest numbered highways at [2] do not have the updated links to the routes' junction lists. Technically, a drive is "original research" but when information from that is coupled with sourced information, you're more accurate. With that, I have not originated an article unless I've driven its entire length (like I did for NY 28N, for example - see my user page, I've listed them all there). Yes, I've put a lot of miles on my car, I suppose I could add another question to the Wikipediholic Test about driving long distances just to get a picture or other info about an article. You said that NY 28 has a concurrency with NY 7. Well according to Mapquest, NY 28 just meets NY 7 north of I-88 concurrency in Mildford. This is all very confusing but i believe mapquest, it never let me down. -- JohnnyAlbert 00:30, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Good, sounds like something we can work with.

I looked through the Flickr photostream to find any models for a good picture; as I've suggested before, none of these were really adequate to the task. We need something that takes in the whole bridge and gives it some context (I like this one that I took within walking distance of my house; I'd submit it as a featured picture candidate save for that ugly bit of litter in the foreground). You probably want to get out of your car somewhere on the Rensselaer side downriver from the bridge and look for a place where you can get the skyline in the back and keep the sun perpendicular to the subject (i.e., the light might be best in the earlier morning to give it some interesting relief and contrast, as well as allow good color). I don't know if you have any skill in editing (sounds like you don't feel you do), but if you want to just upload it raw let me know and I'll take it in to Photoshop and do what I can (which can be a lot, believe me ... this will never be a featured picture but you should have seen the original. It'll have to wait until at least Monday due to work, but yes I'm aware of what needs to go into it. I think it needs to be photographed from the south due to sun, I'll do it from both the Albany and Rensselaer sides and see what I can get. I was up there Thursday and got one (actually three that I stitched together). They don't exactly make Albany or the bridge look beautiful but I had no control over the weather, obviously. Certainly if I can replace them in nicer weather, I'd do it. I also got one of the stub end from below, and the Congress Street Bridge, as well.

Dunn is a difficult bridge to photograph to do it justice, and the effective trumpet interchange at the east end and its meshing with the stacked South Mall interchange can't really be shown in a single shot. Category:Wikipedians in the Junior Chamber

You and I seem to have conflicting viewpoints on listing Category:Wikipedians in the Junior Chamber in Category:Junior Chamber International. Generally, listing a category for Wikipedians in a category for articles in unorthodox, which is why I made changes to the category structure. I still think that Category:Wikipedians in the Junior Chamber should be removed from the parent category. If you still disagree with me, would you like to ask for another opinion from an administrator? Dr. Submillimeter 16:38, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

When creating the category, I noted a recommendation to try to have two parent categories, and thus placed it as I did. The reason was to allow users that chose to do so to be viewed as members of the organization (although, so far only two have so chosen). If there was any mention that it was improper or "unorthodox" to place a category for users under one for articles, I did not notice it. However, I would defend my reasoning under the notion that organizations are by their very nature people-driven, and that it's possible for a number of members to also be contributors here (whether or not their contributions were to articles on said organization). I could not easily note a second parent category that would suit the user category, and it stood to reason to do as I did based on that. I will add though, that your edit summary was cryptic and didn't fully explain the reason for your removal. Albeit more wordy (as this reply is in kind), my reversion edit summary at least briefly explained my reasoning, which is further expounded here. However, by stating in your message here, you did explain your reasoning more clearly (and, with that, invited me to do the same). I have no problem with the removal for the reason that you state here, now that I understand it. My bigger worry was that the category itself might be eliminated for lack of two parent categories. I did a spot check on other categories for Wikipedians in service organizations, and it looks like these other categories only contain one parent category and do not use an article-space category as a parent category. I therefore do not think you should worry about your user category being deleted, and I am going to go ahead with removing Category:Wikipedians in the Junior Chamber in Category:Junior Chamber International. NY 747 shield

Per your comment in the archived discussion about the look of the shields, some have begun to appear on the actual road. I took a picture and put it in the article. Has that classic look. Daniel Case 16:06, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

My opinion: This is one of the "odd-looking variants" I think is becoming one of the norms for new and replacement signs in New York, where the upper arch goes higher than in the past, and there isn't as much of the true horizontal that was once used. Well, I thought you had been talking about the ones where the bubble on top really sticks up and there's very little halo on the numbers. There are a number of those around here, mainly on 17K and 207 near the ends, and at the south end of 416. It's a little different, but to me not cartoonishly so like the other ones. This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Wikipedia for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

...as you did with Reference marker (New York) to NYSDOT Reference Marker--it causes problems with the GFDL licensing, among other things. And that's a very easy thing to do. When calling up the history, all I had to do was click on the datestamp of your last entry, and then click "Edit this Page". As discussed at WT:USRD, the participants list at WP:USRD is being split by state. Since your name has multiple states listed next to it, the designation "NY" has been removed from the large USRD-wide table, and your name has been added to the NY-specific table. Expansion needed

Is it possible you can help get NY 8, 10, 28N, and 30 to FA status? These would help for a Hamilton County, NY roads topic for NYSR. It would be really enjoyable to see the least populated county get a FT of its own.Mitch32^(UP) 14:52, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

I'll have to pick a day and go out and do photos, as I know they all need 'em, as does my "pet" 30A. I don't have quite the free time I once did, but I'm a bit more active than TMF (I do miss him being around, honestly). I'll see what I can do. Today I did a lot of driving and did quite a bit of photography. NY 10's article has a bunch of them; I won't upload them all tonight. Essex County

I may have some older pics from a road trip from years ago but I don't recall if any of them show the route number in the photo itself (is that critical to identify the photo/scene with the highway?). I actually spent a few hours yesterday and got a shot of most of what you asked for; I need to do two things. One of them is to archive this talk page, and number two is to upload the photos. I still have them in my camera; I accidentally deleted the one I had of NY 217 within the Philmont village. I have precious little free time now so that's why you don't see me on much now, but I will at least do two articles that our NYSR needs - 339 a restoration, and 288 which I don't know ever existed. They had been removed and re-re-re-redirected because both routes are both completely under the name of a county highway, but neither of those are noteworthy though, I'm supposing, to be articles on their own merit.
