DYK for Citywide Ferry Service

On 5 October 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Citywide Ferry Service, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that New York City's Citywide Ferry Service is expected to carry 4.6 million passengers each year, roughly as many as the New York City Subway carries each weekday? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Citywide Ferry Service. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Citywide Ferry Service), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Times Square Track Map

Thanks again for adding the track map info boxes. On the Times Square IRT Broadway – Seventh Avenue Line box, I think you should include the connection to Track 4 of the 42nd Street Shuttle. I haven't had time to learn the coding for that yet. Thanks.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 17:19, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

@Kew Gardens 613: Thanks for the message. I'll add the connection, which I completely forgot about. You seemed to leave a duplicate message, so I've removed one of them. epicgenius (talk) 17:39, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject "Chinese in New York City"

Hi epicgenius, hope you're doing well. Just wanted to inquire about the status of this WikiProject. Best, Castncoot (talk) 15:51, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

@Castncoot: Thanks, I hope you are fine as well. I am thinking about creating a {{WikiProject Chinese in New York City}} banner. It will look like the below. I'm also going to sort all the articles in Category:Chinese-American culture in New York City and put them in the new template. Regards, epicgenius (talk) 21:47, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

This obviously requires some category pages to be created, but this can be based off of existing wikiprojects. I am thinking about either making this a task force instead or making the template so that the WikiProject Chinese in New York City is automatically in the WikiProject New York City. epicgenius (talk) 21:47, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Wow. This is fantastic! I wish I had the know-how and ability to create something like this! Castncoot (talk) 01:03, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. But as I said, this requires some category pages to be created and the categories to be populated before I can move this to main template space. epicgenius (talk) 02:12, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
OK. Just to clarify, is this something you're asking my help for or is it something you can do on your own? Castncoot (talk) 15:33, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
If you want to have this wikiproject up ASAP, I would really appreciate your help. If I do it myself, it could take until at least November for me to create the relevant wikiproject structures. epicgenius (talk) 15:36, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
I don't believe there is an ASAP urgency. That being said, it certainly shouldn't take an indefinite amount of time. I'm just not confident about doing this correctly myself. How about we do this - take your time over the next few weeks and see what you're able to get done. At that point, if after you've scoped out the landscape, it looks like two people will be needed, I'll be glad to step in and help. Would that be reasonable to you? Castncoot (talk) 15:46, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
Epicgenius, I've started a new Category:Chinese in New York City page. Hope this kickstarts our effort here! Best, Castncoot (talk) 18:10, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
What the heck, a bot just moved it into Category:Chinese-American culture in New York City after I put all that work into creating it. Castncoot (talk) 18:15, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
I re-created the category page but titled it Category:Chinatowns of New York City instead. Let see if the bot does something to this page. Do you know why the bot may have interfered with the first attempted cat page titled Category:Chinatowns in New York City? Castncoot (talk) 18:44, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
I see my error there. My message to you contained the wrong link. I meant to say that I had created Category:Chinatowns in New York City, not Category:Chinese in New York City. Oh well, now the article pages are all under Category:Chinatowns of New York City. Hope this is a good start! Castncoot (talk) 18:48, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
@Castncoot: I appreciate all the hard work you've just done. Thank you very much for creating the category pages. I'll go on and fill them up more, probably later this week. epicgenius (talk) 00:31, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
@Castncoot: Sorry, my thanks did not go through due to faulty pings. Anyway, thank you for the category pages. epicgenius (talk) 13:42, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
It was my pleasure. Look forward to your contributions as well. Best, Castncoot (talk) 01:52, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
Actually you may have noticed, the articles are all back under the category page Category:Chinatowns in New York City. Sorry for the back and forth confusion. :) Castncoot (talk) 02:50, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
Wow, that's confusing. I need to sleep now, but I'll look at it tomorrow. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Epicgenius (talkcontribs) 04:03, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
Another user had moved the three major borough Chinatown articles back under the cat page Chinatowns in New York City, and therefore that necessitated my moving the rest of the articles back as well. Sorry again for the confusion. Castncoot (talk) 03:16, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

It's all right, I'm not confused. If anything I understand why the categories might have been moved back (though that action might have muddied the difference between Chinatowns of New York City, i.e. significant Chinese populations of each borough, and Chinatowns in New York City, i.e. significant enclaves within each population). epicgenius (talk) 11:13, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

Good point, epicgenius. Castncoot (talk) 22:05, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
It turns out that the editor also arranged Category:Chinese-American culture in New York City to be a parent cat of Category:Chinatowns in New York City. While this is not unreasonable on its own merit, feel free from my standpoint to uncouple the two categories if you need, as having them uncoupled would also be reasonable. Best, Castncoot (talk) 02:21, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
I see. I'll work on reorganizing this. In the meantime, I converted Category:Chinatowns of New York City into a temporary category redirect to Category:Chinatowns in New York City until I could work on it later. epicgenius (talk) 02:30, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. Castncoot (talk) 02:32, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Station layout diagrams

I noticed you've added a few NYCS station layout Routemaps recently. Should they be changed to match the style of the existing ones in these lists (and my sandbox), or is it fine for them to be inconsistent? Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}
to reply to me
15:26, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Also, regarding stations such as {{NYCS station|Wakefield–241st Street|IW}} (was already in my sandbox), three tracks shouldn't share a single switch. (See OpenStreetMap.) Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}
to reply to me
15:36, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

@Jc86035: I think the station articles' track maps should be kept in a different style than the list articles' maps. The former is more complex and requires more vertical space (for instance, see DeKalb Avenue (BMT Fourth Avenue Line)#Track layout). Also, I put three tracks on a single switch in articles like Wakefield–241st Street for two reasons: I got my info from [1] (more recent than[2]), and I'm (probably) too lazy to add the more complex details. epicgenius (talk) 16:00, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: Sorry, I think I was being a bit confusing there; I meant to refer mainly to my sandbox, which uses more complicated diagrams than the two lists (hence why it's been a year since the TfD for Vcohen's templates closed and I'm still a quarter of the way through replacing them). Mostly it's just the spacing between the tracks, whether to use tunnel/bridge icons, continuation arrows/icons, and orientation (to match the horizontal originals which I've been replacing). Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}
to reply to me
16:17, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
@Jc86035: I see what you mean now. My track maps are simpler than yours (e.g. generally, they don't distinguish between elevated/underground, except for Church Avenue (IND Culver Line), nor do they show track curves). I tend to show these tracks based on railroad direction, the major exception being Myrtle Avenue (BMT Jamaica Line) and Marcy Avenue (BMT Jamaica Line). epicgenius (talk) 16:23, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) With respect to “style of the existing”, the word “to” [destination] is not normally capitalized. Useddenim (talk) 22:15, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

@Useddenim: I used "continuation to" [destination] at first, but "to" [destination] is shorter. I just saw your message now, and I think it's a good suggestion to keep in mind. epicgenius (talk) 01:21, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: I still think it'd be better to unify the styles, because otherwise we'd be making 50 duplicates. (I'm not sure how necessary it is to use elevated formations or tunnels, and the continuation style is a bit weird if you don't use fades or CONT arrows. Useddenim?) Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}
to reply to me
03:47, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Agree. In a case like this (extract from a larger diagram), fades are probably preferable to CONTs. Useddenim (talk) 03:51, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
I only used uSTRg and uSTRf because I was copying the initial diagrams from articles about Shanghai Metro stations' track layouts on Chinese Wikipedia. MFADEx wasn't used there, so when I copied the diagrams, I didn't use it here either. But you're both right, FADEs are better. epicgenius (talk) 22:06, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

@Jc86035 and Useddenim: Well, I finally finished adding track maps to every single interlocking in the system that is on a revenue track (I don't know if the lower level of 75th Avenue counts). I guess we can use the BS-templates in the station articles to replace the station layouts in Jc's sandbox that haven't been replaced with BS-templates yet. epicgenius (talk) 15:56, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

@Epicgenius: Sounds like a good idea. Should the bridge formations and tunnels (in the 15 or so of my sandbox's diagrams) be retained or should those be replaced with plain tracks? Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}
to reply to me
16:00, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
@Jc86035: I don't know; you can choose. The bridges and tunnels are omitted in my station diagrams for simplicity, but you can add them if you feel that it adds detail to the article about the terminals. I personally would advise removing the bridges and tunnels, however. The structures of the stations aren't mentioned anywhere in the terminal article. epicgenius (talk) 17:24, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
Since you are all comfortable with the syntax, why not use {{Routemap}} instead of {{BS-map}}? Useddenim (talk) 18:15, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
@Useddenim: The station articles already all use {{routemap}} to reduce template load. I don't know about Jc's sandbox, but if they are BS-maps then these are literally one easy edit from {{BS-map}} to {{routemap}}. epicgenius (talk) 18:26, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Just thanks for your valued help!

Thanks so much for the rapid help in fixing the links on the Dakota article. It is most appreciated. As I’ve been a voracious reader since childhood, I think I’m an asset to Wikipedia. Unfortunately (perhaps), I was born too long ago to ever be a full fledged member of the tech generation. So I require assistance from time to time. I still don't understand how Time and Again had been overlooked as it was a major novel by a major author. (On a side note, its long awaited sequel by the novel’s myriad fans was a big disappointment, at least in my estimation and that of others I've read.) As I said, the building is prominently a part of the novel and there are even photographs of it. Indeed, I think the building is almost as well known for the novel as for the tragic death of Mr. Lennon. Anyway, thanks again!HistoryBuff14 (talk) 18:55, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Did you know?

Did you know that you can easily re-arrange columns and rows in the visual editor?

Select a cell in the column or row that you want to move. Click the arrow at the start of that row or column to open the dropdown menu (shown). Choose either "Move before" or "Move after" to move the column, or "Move above" or "Move below" to move the row.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has mainly worked on a new wikitext editor. They have also released some small features and the new map editing tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the list of work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, releasing the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving language support.

Recent changes

  • You can now set text as small or big.[1]
  • Invisible templates have been shown as a puzzle icon. Now, the name of the invisible template is displayed next to the puzzle icon.[2] A similar feature will display the first part of hidden HTML comments.[3]
  • Categories are displayed at the bottom of each page. If you click on the categories, the dialog for editing categories will open.[4]
  • At many wikis, you can now add maps to pages. Go to the Insert menu and choose the "Maps" item. The Discovery department are adding more features to this area, like geoshapes. You can read more on MediaWiki.org.[5]
  • The "Save" button now says "Save page" when you create a page, and "Save changes" when you change an existing page.[6] In the future, the "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.
  • Image galleries now use a visual mode for editing. You can see thumbnails of the images, add new files, remove unwanted images, rearrange the images by dragging and dropping, and add captions for each image. Use the "Options" tab to set the gallery's display mode, image sizes, and add a title for the gallery.[7]

Future changes

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining 10 "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next month. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including Thai, Burmese and Aramaic.

The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. The 2017 wikitext editor will look like the visual editor and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices in October 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.

Let's work together

Do you teach new editors how to use the visual editor? Did you help set up the Citoid automatic reference feature for your wiki? Have you written or imported TemplateData for your most important citation templates? Would you be willing to help new editors and small communities with the visual editor? Please sign up for the new VisualEditor Community Taskforce.

If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly, so that we can notify you when the next issue is ready. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:18, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution

  Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Barack Obama election victory speech, 2008 into Barack Obama presidential campaign, 2008. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was moved, attribution is not required. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:29, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

@Diannaa: Thank you for the message. I didn't know this needed proper attribution in the edit summary if I copied from one page to another. I'll remember that next time. epicgenius - (talk) 15:04, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

W Line Restoration Page Update

Hey, long time no see! So, as we know the (W)'s returning Nov 7. This means we need to reupdate all of the current subway line information boxes and station layouts to reinclude the (W) as well as shifting over the (N) to the express tracks and not the local stations south of 34 St. Another thing, since Kew Gardens edited in all the second av line pages that the (N) would be a rush hour extension to 96 St, then why don't we say that the (W) also has a rush hour extension to Gravesend-86 St? Thanks, AahdTahar (talk) 01:28, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

@AahdTahar: It's good to see you too. Maybe we can include the W extension. One question: Is the W running local or express in Brooklyn? I'll definitely include it. epicgenius - (talk) 02:19, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: That's the thing, I think it's going to be modified. Manhattan bound (W) trains will start at Coney Island since 86 St is unavailable to use, or they probably will just start at Bay Parkway. Brooklyn bound (W) trains will end at 86 St. AahdTahar (talk) 16:32, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
I meant, is the W running all local on the Fourth Avenue Line, or is it running express? epicgenius - (talk) 16:35, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: Oh, Fourth Av express. The only time it runs local is if it's heading to Bay Ridge.
@AahdTahar: OK, that makes sense. I'll have to include this, then. Thanks. epicgenius - (talk) 20:38, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: By the way, do you think we should update the Sea beach line stations to reflect the actual service pattern? It says that N trains stop here at all times, but in reality it's actually only Coney Island bound N trains stopping here. This is a mockup of what I mean,

Fort Hamilton Parkway is a local station on the BMT Sea Beach Line of the New York City Subway, located in Brooklyn at the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and 62nd Street. It is served by the Coney Island bound N train at all times as the manhattan bound N train skips this station due to the Sea Beach rehabilitation.

Thoughts? AahdTahar (talk) 22:39, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

@AahdTahar: Maybe this rehabilitation should be mentioned as a note in the bottom, e.g.

From mid-2016 to early 2017, Manhattan-bound N trains skip this station due to a rehabilitation of the Sea Beach Line.

DYK review

Hello, I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a review for me for Template:Did you know nominations/Paul Nahaolelua for the TBD review for your nomination. Usually I don't ask other users to review my nominations but I'm interested in getting it ready before November in time for the main page on Election Day. Thanks! --KAVEBEAR (talk) 16:32, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

@KAVEBEAR: Sure. I guess I'll review it if someone isn't on this already. I don't know about co-reviews, but I think it's possible. epicgenius - (talk) 17:09, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

Notability?

Hey, Epicgenius - you're famous! [8] Congratulations on the recognition. You probably don't qualify for your own article quite yet, but you could add this template to your userpage if you want.... 0;-D --MelanieN (talk) 21:26, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

@MelanieN: Thanks for the link. I guess I'll look at it later, but right now I apparently have to research about Chinese drug trafficking. (Homework assignment.)   epicgenius - (talk) 21:40, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Well, you're at the right place. There's this thing called the Internet... --MelanieN (talk) 21:51, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Ooh, I found it, Illegal drug trade in China. Yeah. Interesting. Sounds more like a background you'd see in a Model United Nations conference. But anyway... epicgenius - (talk) 21:57, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Just remember the writer's golden rule: if you copy from one source, it's plagiarism. If you copy from several sources, it's research. 0;-D That's also the secret of success in mathematics. --MelanieN (talk) 22:18, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Yeah. Don't mention this to anybody, but I once "plagiarized" myself. Yes, that's a thing, and yes, I copied from myself (without official permission) by unofficially giving permission to myself. Weird, but things happen.   epicgenius - (talk) 23:57, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Your secret is safe with me. And the 163 people who watchlist your talk page. --MelanieN (talk) 01:33, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
Oh no... 163 people? What— Now I'm probably wiki-famous. epicgenius - (talk) 02:45, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
You have 4.7 centijimbos. Not bad. --MelanieN (talk) 17:45, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
How many is a jimbo, anyway? Wait, let me guess... 3,469? epicgenius - (talk) 18:22, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

There's more coverage of you, Ryan (if I can call you that): [9] [10] They seem to be just rehashings of the Washington Post story, so they don't count as independent sources towards your notability. Still, congratulations! Everymorning (talk) 04:20, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

@Everymorning: Oh no... Well, thanks anyway. epicgenius - (talk) 04:21, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
(By the way, I meant "Oh no" as "Oh no, I'm famous!" You can call me Ryan, but I think going by my username would reduce confusion elsewhere on wiki.) epicgenius - (talk) 04:30, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) you plagiarized someone on Wikipedia?! scandalous Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

Oh, no! I may need to undergo a CCI. Once they figure I plagiarized myself, I'll be indeffed!   epicgenius - (talk) 12:58, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

Just a minor nitpick: could you use the c*1 syntax for adding platform numbers instead of the num icons (see {{Routemap}} documentation)? The num icons tend to be rendered badly at the RDT-size resolution. Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

Yeah, sure. Sorry, I didn't know about this c*number syntax. epicgenius - (talk) 14:38, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
It's fine – given that I basically made it up and stuck it into Module:Routemap two months ago without putting it in WP:RDT, I'd actually be a bit surprised if someone else were using it. (To clarify, parameters like align=l/r/t/b/combination can be added after __ for overlays and !_ for cells without overlays or at the end of a stack of overlays.) Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

Well, another thing I'll have to learn when I'm not in school. Thanks for the explanation, though. epicgenius - (talk) 14:57, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Archiving, as it contains the reporter's personal information. epicgenius - (talk) 18:04, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Hey Ryan, I'm a reporter with NY Post. I'd love to have a quick chat about your work on Wikipedia. It's amazing that you've done so many edits, considering your age! Can you give me a call? Or shoot me an e-mail ? Thanks, Natalie O'Neill (Redacted) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Inkonthepad (talkcontribs) 15:38, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

@Inkonthepad: Hi Natalie. I'll have to check my schedule, but I may be able to schedule a little time for a short e-mail chat. Regards, epicgenius - (talk) 15:40, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
