Church of the Mediator (Micanopy, Florida) & Micanopy Historic District

Hi, I thought you might be interested in the Church of the Mediator (Micanopy, Florida), which I posted today. It's not on the National Register, but should be. It is in the Micanopy Historic District. Alachua County Historic Preservation lists it on their walking tour of Micanopy. I might have. Check here, it's where all the pics I took are. Usually I take a bunch of pics in any historic district I hit. From the address, I sounds like it's across from the Herlong Mansion, which means it's the one with the red door? If so, I got it. Feel free to add it to the article. I'd say the church is what's known as a contributing property for the district, so it may be on the register, indirectly. Btw, keep up the good work on the articles. Many thanks to you for all the stubs you've created and the pictures you've uploaded. Yes, the Church of the Mediator has a red door. You had two pictues of it and I've unploaded one to the infobox. Thanks also for telling me about contribution properties. I created an article yesterday All Saints Episcopal Church (Round Lake, New York) where the entire village of Round Lake is an HD. I'm getting ready to do one on a church inside Chautauqua Institution where I spent four summers. List of Registered Places in Florida

I changed out a wikipedia footnote which supposedly justified the existence of the Florida Registry of Historic Places. I was actually looking for this external footnote to justifiy an entry in an article I was working on, but it wasn't in the main Florida article, so I supplied it. I think you just deleted it. Did you mean the one to this site? If so, the way it was referenced was incorrect. And I'm surprised I missed it, with all the updating I do to that page. That site is useful, but not an official gov't site, and in the context of when the NRHP gets updated, it's not useful. I don't think it's been updated in years. I kept the link the goes to the official gov't site, and the page that shows new weekly listings on the Register. I hope that answered your question? Prospect Park (Brooklyn) rating: B --> Start

Thank you, Ebyabe, but in my humble opinion, I think the article misses B class by a bit. There's too many words in some topics, others are entirely left out, and there is worshipful rambling that goes on without benefit of references. It probably had the appearance of completeness to a passer-by, and you've been rating a lot of articles, but I live pretty close to the park, have read up on it quite a bit, and know that the article is kind of skewed and imbalanced. That's cool. I've been assessing NRHP sites, and figured on rating other projects at the same time. I'm not really attached to the ratings, and if assessments change, that's fine. My general criteria are length and citations and format, with pictures as a contributing factor. Honestly, it looks better than some articles I've seen rated a B. United Hebrews of Ocala

Hey. Looks like it's technically outside of the district, since Sanchez Ave is the eastern boundary, and that address is to the east of that. District boundaries can be fuzzy, though, and it's close. How did you find out it's a contributing property to the district. In any case, I should be able to swing by it in the next few days and take some pics of it. Hmm, if it's the one I'm thinking of, I think I wanted to take some pics of it, but didn't b/c it didn't look like it was in the district.

I have been taking pics of interesting historic-ey buildings that aren't NRHP lately, just 'cause. Like this, this and this. Just about all the ones on Wikicommons are in this category, if that helps.

Thanks for your reply, One of the two Ocala city links in the article discuss it as a contributing property, I found it through to Guide to Florida Historical Architecture from the UF Press which I look at whenever I can get to my local library, since it's reference only. I'll be busy looking through all the pictures of Florida churches you've posted. I've belonged to this Carpenter Gothic (CG) church for around 25 years and all my family is buried there. I'd thought CG churches were fairly rare and limited to Episcopal churches, but I've found them all over the country and in British Columbia and in other denominations as well. (United Hebrews, though, is the only synagogue I've found.) Florida, though, seems to have the most and the best preserved CG churches. Maybe it's the tropical climate, though there was one about 5 miles up the road from me that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1949. The ones that were built in big urban areas seem to have disappeared, but I did find one on Staten Island, of all places. Thanks again for all your help. You're quite welcome! I'm going to try getting better pics at a future date, but figured that should tide you over. It's rather tree-ey around there, and with getting the shots not long before sunset, they're not up to my usual standards. For that matter, I probably need to hit Micanopy and McIntosh again for similar reasons. Adding to my list... Btw, this one might be of interest? It's one of the neater ones of it's type. Citrus Tower

Please, please, feel free! That's why I upload all those photos, so's they can be used. :)

Wikimedia is the, I guess you could say, media arm of Wikipedia. Same organization and all. I prefer adding to stuff to Wikimedia b/c it's more suited for that, and better able to be organized. I think it's also more geared towards user-generated media. So none of the "fair use" ca-ca one encounters on Wikipedia, doncha know. I'm adding the Wikicommons link to the article. It's where it is, 'cause otherwise it generates odd white space.

I would've added a pic to the article, but when I uploaded them originally, there was no article. So hooray on that. Now if only it would get added to the NRHP. It became eligible last year when it became 50 years old (the minimum to be listed). It certainly deserves to be on the Register, imho. :) -Ebyabe 23:20, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikiproject class assessments

HI, how do you decide that an article is stub class? Do you drive it off the presence of a stub template? Rich Farmbrough, 16:09 15 December 2007 (GMT).

Length and references, mostly. Pictures not so much. If folks don't agree with my rating, they can always change it. I'd just rather see stuff rated as something than not rated at all. Florida pictures

I was in the Tampa area a couple weeks ago on an inline skate tour. I decided to visit some of the sites on the National Register of Historic Places to get pictures -- but when I checked, it turned out that you've uploaded pictures of just about every one I visited. So, here's a special "hats off" to you for doing such a great job with the Florida NRHP articles.

I got a chance to visit the Henry B. Plant Museum in Tampa when I first got into town, and it's pretty impressive. So, here's a picture from the hotel:

Victoria Mansion

Hello. I was just wondering what this edit achieved, in terms of replacing one vertical line with another. - 22:53, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't really show well on the previews and such, does it? What I did is replace any vertical lines with two leading spaces to having only one leading space.

From " |" to " |". It's more visible when one actually edits afterward. I just think it looks better. Doesn't hurt or help anything, really. It has been confirmed on the Camp Rock page that it will premiere this summer. It also confirms the release of The Cheetah Girls 3 in Auguest. Whaddya mean, fix the date permanently? Is it when you change batteries? I've learned to change them real fast, that usually works. I learned that when I was up in Chipley a couple months back, right after the time change. Worked out, since I'd not reset the time on the camera anyway. Plus I was in a different timezone, which only added to the confusion. Anyway, looking forward to more of your pix.

Mind you, I've decided to visit every NRHP in Florida, whether others have taken pix or not of the place. B/c you can never have enough pics of a place. That sounds like fun! You'll want to get to El Jobean Hotel pretty soon. It looked like it was about to topple over when I took a couple pictures of it. All overgrown too. I had to squint to make out the address to determine I was even at the right place! I thought maybe it fell into disrepair when Hurricane Charley blew through but I don't think it affected that far west - and the neglect looks to be far older than 2004. Re: my camera, yes, I was all upset when I came back from some trip and found that all the dates were off by six or eight months, so I fixed it. Well the pictures I took last week were off by six or eight months again! Drive me crazy. I don't have two batteries so I can't switch them quickly - can't test that theory. I always carry extra batteries, at least eight. I'm not about to cut a trip short b/c I run out of juice for the camera, doncha know. :) I'll carry extra when I'm on a long walk, like when I was getting shots in the caverns at Florida Caverns State Park. I remember having to walk back blocks to my car when the batteries got low in downtown Orlando. Not having that happen again. Ton of work

Thanks for all your re-categorization work on Landmarks in U.S. states. I've used AWB, but I hadn't thought of a way to make it do what you did - so kudos to you. There's one more task that I would like to accomplish, and perhaps you can make AWB do it too: For example, Mission San Juan Capistrano (Texas) is in Category:National Historic Landmarks in Texas and also Category:Registered Historic Places in Texas. The latter is redundant and should be deleted since the former is a subcategory of Category:Registered Historic Places in Texas. So, when a reader goes to Category:Registered Historic Places in Texas he'll see Category:National Historic Landmarks in Texas at the top, and then all of the "non-landmark" sites listed below. There needn't be any individual landmark sites in the list. Can you use AWB to do that (for all the states)? (I've done it manually for a few of the states, so you may find some that don't need any done.) Thanks.--Appraiser (talk) 16:33, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

You're quite welcome. I'm always figuring new ways to twist AWB into doing odd jobs. :) It's funny, I was thinking about doing what you suggested whilst I was recategorizing, but was rather far along in the process, so gave up on the idea. Actually, what you're suggesting would probably be better handled by a bot. I've thought about getting involved in bot-iness, but not got 'round to it yet. Hmm, something of a similar nature got done a while back for the Florida NRHPs. The person I'd recommend you contact is Alai. Tell me what transpires, and if I can be furtherly helpful, do drop me a line. I've added an info at the article citing his presence in the upcoming Star Trek movie as Leonard McCoy, and you removed it saying there was no reliable source of the fact. A simple visit to his page at IMDB can provide a reliable source. Hey. You didn't add references to the statement itself, which is why it got deleted, and by others previous to me. Some checking shows it's indeed true, with some decent sources. I added the info back, with the references, so it should stay there now.

On a side note, I just don't see it. I mean, I like Urban (it's why his page is on my watchlist), but I just can't see him as McCoy. About the only casting choice I wholeheartedly agree with is Quinto as Spock. Oh well, I guess we'll see in a few months. More county-specific Florida NRHP lists

I say that more major Counties in Florida, mostly the larger ones, deserve their own lists of Registered Historic Places. These include Pinellas, Duval, and Orange. ----DanTD (talk) 18:12, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, three counties (Hillsborough, Dade and Volusia) already have separate lists, as they're the ones with the most. Duval and Pinellas I'd agree with, Orange not so much. Polk is one that could use breaking out; I believe it has the most historic districts in the state.

I'd really like to see the Florida list get to featured list status. From what I gather, having separate lists for each county may be the way to go anyway. Something similar's being done with the List of National Historic Landmarks by state. Hmm... --Ebyabe (talk) 18:24, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

All of New York's NRHP lists are county specific, and I just created three yesterday, because they were closer to Chicago. I'm planning to add othes for counties with major cities in Illinois, and I chose Orlando County, Florida for the same reason.
