Dycebot : endashes in article names

Hi, I noticed that DyceBot had made a number of edits where a hyphen in an article name was replaced with an endash (per WP:DASH). There are a large number of football season articles that require this change to be made, for example those in the categories:

• Category:Seasons in English football
• Category:The Football League seasons
• Category:Football League Cup seasons
• Category:FA Cup seasons
• Category:UEFA Cup seasons

That's just for starters, but I was wondering if this might be a task that your bot could do? Cheers. --Jameboy (talk) 23:30, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

GL/I bot

Quick DyceBot question

Hi. Just wanted to ask whether DyceBot requires the {{resolved}} tags to be dated (i.e. {{resolved|1=~~~~~}}) to properly archive the Graphics Lab/Image workshop page or if it picks timestamps from anywhere in the section. Country outlines project update - 2009/03/08

Things have been slowing down again, so it's time for a big push...

We've gone live

This project needed a shot in the arm. Also, its draft pages have been littering Wikipedia's categories for months. The time seemed right to move all the country outline drafts to article space.

WHAT???

Well, the drafts had been sitting in Wikipedia space for a year.

WHAT???

Development has been moving at a snail's pace and we could use the help of the Wikipedia community at large (who are more likely to find these if they are in article space).

WHAT???

Yes, we've gone live.  :)

This puts pressure on us to get the blatantly incomplete elements of these outlines done. The only glaring problem is the government branches sections. These need to be corrected ASAP.

I've mentioned THE GOVERNMENT BRANCHES SECTIONS many times to many people over the past year, but the problem just doesn't seem to have been taken seriously. So let me put it another way:

HELP!!! I need your help on this now. Almost all the countries have a government with an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch. The links for these branches need to be completed for each country outline:

Here's a convenient list you can use WP:LINKY on to access and edit these quickly. Please copy the list's link to the top of your talk page so that you can access it easily.

If you spot any standardization in links, and ways we can automate parts of this process, or for groups of countries that have links in common, please let me know!

Administrative support for outlines

There has been growing pressure on me to write up the administrative pages for outlines - their instructions, guidelines, etc. Therefore, I'm now in the process of composing these. Fortunately, it is mostly a matter of gathering material from messages I've written to you guys over the past year. Still, this is taking up most of my time, and I will be buried in these for the foreseeable future.

Traffic control

The next big task after the government branches sections are cleaned up is link support for the outlines.

There's quite a list of links and notices that need to be put in place around Wikipedia, providing access to them to readers, and alerting editors to the need to develop and maintain these pages. This will keep our bot people very busy (and happy).

But the most important thing right now is to get the government branches sections completed. So please, put your bots aside, roll up your shirt sleeves, and start typing.

Dycebot question

Yes to both of those, the Map workshop doesn't get as much traffic as the Image one, but that's largely because it's new, so I think trying it with the same settings would be best and we can tweak later if needed. Kmusser (talk) 18:06, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

In response to a friend on Wikipedia who was wondering about how I've been and what I've been up to, I got to spewing about our little endeavor, and well, I got so carried away I pretty much told him everything.  :) The message turned out to be a pretty good summary of what we've accomplished so far and the overall plan.

Libraries

For months, I've been sitting at a terminal in one of the largest libraries in the country, and I haven't even looked around at the available resources.

Until a few days ago.

I'm overwhelmed.

When compared to libraries, Wikipedia is small. (See Digest of Education Statistics 2008, Chapter 7:Libraries and Educational Technology Libraries, and turn to page 617).

But is that a fair comparison?

Yes.

Why?

Because we have growth potential.  :)

And we cover everything, including libraries!

Guess what else I found?

Hunting for outlines

I began to study libraries and librarians, since they are experts in organizing knowledge. And of course I turned to Wikipedia to see what we had on the things I came across...

And while doing so I kept running into outlines on Wikipedia that are not (yet) part of the Outline of knowledge.

When I come across non-OOK outlines, generally I rename them, and reformat them to our standard outline format. But there is the occasional exception.

Here are some outlines I just added:

1. List of energy topics --> Outline of energy (it converted great)
2. List of Dewey Decimal classes --> Outline of Dewey Decimal classes (no conversion)
3. Library of Congress Classification --> ??? (no rename, no conversion)

The last 2 are outlines by their very nature, and so our standard outline subheadings didn't seem to fit. So I left them as is.

I renamed the first 2, but the last one is the name of the outline, that is, the topic itself is an outline, and that outline is presented as the article's content, so I left the name as is. For now. This needs more thought.

Of course, that's not all. Concerning those last 2 outlines above...

Alternate outlines of knowledge

...not only are they outlines, but they are outlines of knowledge! Well, the top few levels, at least.

What happens if we linkify them?  :)

That is, what happens if we linkify their classifications to Wikipedia's outlines?  :)   :)   :)

I challenge you to find some "hidden" outlines.

I dare you to take a look around Wikipedia for hidden outlines (that is, outlines not yet hooked into the OOK), and add your kills to WP:WPOOK#The hunt for hidden outlines.

Sri Lanka archiving bot

after a long time, I think that the WP:SLR is now ready for your bot. Please take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Sri_Lanka_Reconciliation/housekeeping#Bot.2C_again and see if you can implement the following numbers: 7 days for archiving resolved sections, 30 for tagging for stale, and again 30 for archiving stale sections. after deliberation, we would like to stick to a simple archiving scheme, i.e. putting all archived material of a given year into one folder, as we did in 2007. (I suppose subfolders 2009.1 and 2009.2 etc could eventually be created for reasons of size) The page to be archived is Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sri Lanka Reconciliation only. To summarize

• archive Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sri Lanka Reconciliation
• 7 days for archiving {{Resolved}}
• 30 days for marking {{stale}}
• 30 days for archiving {{stale}}
• old threads are archived by year, subfolders can be created if required by size.

What are the benefits of a tree structure?

I'm interested, because I need to explain the benefits in the guideline on outlines I'm writing. (Outlines are a type of tree structure).

Dycebot on GL/I unusual action...

Hi...just thought I would tell you, DyceBot with this edit [1] archived a request I was in the process of working on as resolved for some reason, although no resolved tag was displayed. I think the problem may relate to the fact that it seems recently the code when one makes a request on GL/I [2] has been changed...it now includes the following at the start of the request:

We've started the next phase

I was experiencing mental block on the article draft for "outline" and on the outline guideline draft. And this was holding the whole project back. Without these (which are intended to explain the type of lists known as outlines in detail), the danger is higher that a controversy could go the wrong way.

I requested help on them, but there was none forthcoming.

So I went ahead and started us on the next phase of operations without those 2 pages...

Our AWB'ers and I have placed about 1600 notices all over Wikipedia. And the plan is to place several thousand more.

This generated only one complaint, but it was a very vocal one, and attracted a few other detractors who seemed unfamiliar with the concept of hierarchical outlines and their benefits. However, just as many or more editors came to the defense of the OOK, and there was no consensus formed. But, dab is still trying to rally opposition to outlines at the Village Pump. See below...

Administrator noticeboard incident and Village Pump policy discussion

It appears that the banner placed on the talk page of the Outline of Switzerland caught the attention of an editor named Dbachmann who posted a rather forceful message on my talk page, another on WT:WPOOK, another at WP:VPP, and still another at WP:AN!

He went well out of his way to use negative hype to cause a stir.

It appears that Mr. Bachmann doesn't understand the nature of hierarchical outlines and their applications. And though he implied that he has never seen an OOK outline before, he was involved with a discussion on these when they were called "lists of basic topics".

His primary argument is that outlines are content forks of articles, and violate WP:CFORK.

But "topic lists", of which outlines are a type, have been around for almost as long as Wikipedia, and fall under the WP:LISTS and WP:STAND guidelines. They aren't intended as forks, as they are lists, bringing the benefits of lists to the corresponding subjects, such as grouping and navigation.

Someone suggested an MfD, but lists are articles, and are within the jurisdiction of AfD. Only the portal page, which merely lists the outline articles, falls within the scope of the MfD department.

The administrator's noticeboard was considered the wrong venue for the discussion, and the discussion was closed.

But Dab's discussion at the Village Pump is still active. Hopefully level heads will prevail there too.

Now what?

Am I disheartened or deterred? Hell no. I say "full steam ahead!"

But we really need to finish the article draft and the guideline. Otherwise there will continue to be confusion.

Over the next week or two, we'll be posting another 1600 or so notices. It's a good thing we didn't send out 10,000 of them all at once.  :)

At this point, all I can say is, it is quite a fascinating report. A bug: It should put the removing admin's edit-summary in <nowiki>-tags, else it will show Wikimarkup like templates in edit summaries (check the entry for "Majority Action" for example). Regards SoWhy 08:25, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Need some info on Dycebot

Since your intelligent bot archives the Graphic Lab, I need some info about how it's done. How long does it take to archive a request after being marked resolved? How about stale? What makes an image "stale"?

An [[4][image] I uploaded to Wikipedia appears on an [[5][Image Workshop page], where it is marked "stale". What is "stale", and why was my image declared so?

I see that someone has requested that the image be converted to SVG. I would have uploaded the SVG in the first place if I had thought it possible, but at the time it appeared not to be so. How do I go about uploading the .svg as a replacement for the .jpeg?

DyceBot at the Graphic Lab

Thanks for the response. I don't think changes need to be done :-). However, a user at the illustration workshop brought up an issue about DyceBot being "fooled" when a user uses the {{done}} tag even when the request is still ongoing. The done tag is sometimes used for multi-image tasks as a way to indicate the images that have been done and the ones that haven't. For example:

   Done
• File:Ukrainian Plast membership badge.png
• 
   Done
• 
   Done

Since there's an image left for the request, it should not be archived. DyceBot would archive anyways probably because of the done tags. Is there anyway to fix this? If not, then no problem, we could just avoid it for unsolved requests. Thanks, ZooFari 17:04, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

No, as the bot is a simple archive bot; it has no ability to "reject" anything. It simply uses that tag to identify sections that are not resolved, but have been sitting a while since the last response. It will eventually archive the section if there is no further posting. This is to prevent old requests from sitting on the page forever. If you wish, you may remove the tag and post a new message in the section to bump your request, ensuring it remains there until the next time it is old enough to have the stale tag applied. If you do not, and no one else responds, it will be archived eventually. I don't remember the exact timing at the moment.--Dycedarg ж 09:04, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Am I affecting DyceBot's operations at Graphic Lab?

I wanted to let you know of a change I made to the request filler template. When someone makes a new request at Graphic Lab/Images to improve, the old template would say {{Stale|user}}. But as you can see here: [7], I changed this to {{Stale|1=~~~}}. I hope this won't affect the operation of your bot. If it does, feel free to revert my changes. The reason I made them was because some users will manually add stale, but they wouldn't replace "user" with their own name. This change hasn't been in place long enough to see if it would actually increase the signatures of who tagged the section stale. I believe your bot already replaces "user" with a "1=" parameter. The actual change you made to the template won't have any effect on the way DyceBot operates, since you only changed the comment in the text and the bot ignores comments. However, it could be quite helpful if it causes people who want to manually add stale tags to put a timestamp when they do. If people add stale tags without comments, it could cause the bot to archive things much earlier than intended.--Dycedarg ж 20:55, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Happy New Year Dycedarg - I see that you aren't too active here these days, but just wanted to leave you a note that it appears your easyprod script doesn't notify the user (even when notify is selected). Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

DyceBot

Hi Dycedarg,

first of all I hope you're still active on Wikipedia since your last contribution was a while back but I'll take my chance anyway:

DyceBot is currently archiving the various workshops of the WP:GL.

• The first question is: Can your bot also work on Commons and if yes could it also automate archival in the workshops of the Commons:GL?
• The second question is: Could your bot be taught to use some sort of archival template? So we can easily set at which age stale or resolved sections are archived, when a section is marked as stale, if stale sections are archived at all, etc.? Or would this go beyond the scope of AutoWikiBrowser?

I'm still around, I just don't edit much anymore. The answer is yes and yes. However, there are complications. The primary issue is that I would require authorization from the commons bot people before I could run a bot there and I'm not sure they'd be particularly thrilled to have someone running a bot on the site who never visits or edits it. I could probably convince them that I'm responsible etc. enough to do it given that I've been running bots continuously on Wikipedia for years without any real problems, but I can't make any guarantees. In any case, it seems likely that the approval process would take both time and effort on top of the effort in altering the bot to work with a template, and I'm sure you can understand why I'd be hesitant to expend that effort unless I was sure that the bot was needed and wanted.

On that note I can't help but notice that commons:Commons talk:Graphic Lab has a fairly long and contentious discussion of archiving on it. I didn't read the whole discussion, but I skimmed it, and I didn't see much evidence of consensus for anything. If you were to have a discussion with the other maintainers of the pages in question in which you outlined what the bot does (essentially what the existing bot does with the addition of automatic stale tagging and archival) and a consensus was reached that such a bot would resolve the problems you've been having to everyone's satisfaction, I'd be willing to run the gauntlet of getting the bot approved. If you wanted me to pop in and describe what the bot does quick I'd do that, but otherwise it would be up to you to gain that consensus. Hi Dycedarg, first of all thanks for your answer (I copied it from my talk page for context, you can reply to me here in future if you like, I watched your talk page).

That something like this needs consensus goes without question and that's the exact reason why I'm currently evaluating the possibilities of automatic archival of resolved sections. For example the Commons:GL/P recently implemented automatic archival by User:SpBot which would be a good choice, too (yet it might not be a perfect fit for the needs of the GL). I'm aiming for unifying archival in all workshops that want to opt-in and will ask the relevant questions now that I know your Bot and Euku's bot both could do the job (those are the two archiving resolved sections that I know of). Which one we will pick depends on the feedback of the other graphists (as you might have noticed your bot uses {{resolved}} to mark sections resolved as is the current standard in GL, whereas Euku's bot uses {{section resolved}} – we'd probably need to decide for one of both).

Ok, sounds good. Incidentally, if you wanted me to I could change the template the bot uses to archive sections from {{resolved}} to {{section_resolved}}. That would be an easier change in fact than the one I'd already be making to make it work off of the template. The only real change from what you're already getting with SpBot that I can see is that mine would be marking sections stale/archiving them as opposed to just archiving resolved sections.--Dycedarg ж 06:11, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

I think which template will be used will be more of a user decision instead of having any technological background. I'll just ask in the graphics lab for this. There are two things currently differentiating your bots (as far as I can tell):

• Your bot also marks stale requests and archives them to according sections of an archive page (the whole idea of archiving stale requests might be controversial though).
• Euku's bot allows to set after how many days sections are archived with the help of {{Autoarchive resolved section}} so it's easy configurable by users without needing bot access.

There is a request in the Graphics Lab for PNG logo files for Swedish Nazi logo, 1920s? I have completed this request but am unsure how to document the copyright information for the commons as there is not information on this part listed. Can you give some assistance on this please?

Gah, sorry about this. I had been planning to do something about this back in January but put it off because I was really busy and then forgot about it completely. The reason it stopped editing is that I had it running on the Toolserver and that no longer exists. There's a replacement, Wikimedia Labs, that I need to move it to. Theoretically the migration should be easy enough, just possibly slightly time consuming. Hopefully I can get it done this weekend, if not then next weekend. If I don't get it running on Labs this weekend I'll just start running it on my computer for now. Sorry about the delay in doing something about this, it happened at a bad time but I should have remembered to do something about it sooner than now.--Dycedarg ж 18:26, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
